Join ArtTable at Wave Hill for a curator-led tour of Outcasts: Women in the Wilderness and Be(e) Sanctuary by Borinquen Gallo. Tours will be led by Co-Curators and ArtTable members Jennifer McGregor and Deborah Frizzell, and Wave Hill Curator of Visual Arts, Gabriel de Guzman.  Several artists will also be in attendance.

Women have long been treated and portrayed as outcasts, banished to a literal or symbolic wilderness on the fringes of the social order. Portrayals of their casting-out span regions and cultures across the globe and across millennia. Outcasts: Women in the Wilderness acknowledges the continued need for activism and cultural production that builds bonds across lines of identity and difference, informing and empowering individual and collective memory. Nancy Spero’s work is the impetus for the show that includes the work of Samira Abbassy. Jaishri Abichandani, Huma Bhabha, Chitra Ganesh, Scherezade Garcia, Mariam Ghani, Kris Grey, Fay Ku, Tracey Moffat , Zanele Muholi, Nancy Spero, Marie Watt, Yee I-Lann.

Borinquen Gallo’s Be(e) Sanctuary, a solo exhibition in the Sunroom Project Space, highlights the need for enduring care of the natural environment, ultimately pointing to the apiary as a symbol of community and collaboration. Crafted out of debris netting, repurposed plastic bags, and caution tape, Gallo’s installation issues a warning about the need to recycle, while blurring the lines between inside and outside, artifice and nature.

Thank you to Jennifer McGregor for organizing this program.
