Philadelphia Assembled

On view through December 10, 2017

Initiated by artist Jeanne van Heeswijk and shaped by a group of over one hundred collaborators, Philadelphia Assembled (PHLA) is a project that merges art and activism to explore the concerns of a diverse array of Philadelphia communities. Amplifying a broad set of hopes, visions, and questions about the city, PHLA attempts to articulate a collective narrative about Philadelphia and some of its most urgent issues. These concerns are organized around five subjects and their corresponding questions. Reconstructions: How are common histories rewritten? Sovereignty: How do we define self-determination and unity? Sanctuary: How do we create and maintain safe spaces? Futures: How do we reimagine our tomorrow? Movement: How do we share knowledge and form new networks?

PHLA began in 2013 as a series of conversations between van Heeswijk and a number of individuals, stakeholders, and community leaders. In 2017, this period of discussion, investigation, and gathering manifested in three public phases. The first was a season of programs, meals, and installations throughout the city. These elements were further activated by a performative movement from the city to the Museum. Reassembling what emerged from these conversations and public actions, Philadelphia Assembled continues its development in its third phase, here in the Perelman Building, transforming its spaces into a civic stage where the city is performed.
