Join the SoCal chapter of ArtTable for a visit to two galleries, the Landing and Sprueth Magers, both new to Los Angeles, which are currently showcasing the phenomenal contribution of African-American women to the visual arts.

We will begin at the Landing with a walkthrough of Signifying Form, led by curator Jill Moniz featuring highly narrative sculptural works by black female artists in Los Angeles between 1935 and 2016, including Samella Lewis, Betye Saar, Maren Hassinger, Senga Nengudi, Alison Saar, Dominique Moody and Brenna Youngblood. Signifying Form examines the relationship between material and meaning, and focuses on race and gender vis-à-vis Los Angeles as the particular location that allowed these women the space to push the boundaries of what sculpture could be and signify.

Following a short no-host lunch break, we will reconvene at Sprueth Magers for a director-led tour of POWER, a group exhibition curated by Todd Levin that surveys the work of 37 African American women artists from the nineteenth century to now. Titled after the 1970 gospel song by Sister Gertrude Morgan, POWER weaves together fine and folk art traditions to explore how artists have engaged issues of race, gender, and class against our evolving cultural and artistic landscape.

Street parking is available at both galleries. There is also a parking lot within walking distance of the Landing (see map at http://www.thelandinggallery.com/about/) and the LACMA Spaulding Street lot ($15) adjacent to Sprueth Magers.

Thank you to SoCal ArtTableVice Chair Brenda Williams for organizing this event.
