SPAIN: Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, and Santander
June 23–July 1, 2018
“I wanted the building to fly” architect Renzo Piano remarked about the Centro Botin, his stunning new museum, which opened on June 23 in Santander, Spain. A ‘must-visit’ for art- and architecture lovers alike. Of course, it will be part of the ArtTable Spain Art Experience 2018. During this ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour we will also explore the magnificent art scenes of the entirely different but equally enticing Spanish cities: Barcelona, Bilbao (to see the The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry), and Madrid. Architecture, music, and food culture are very much a part of the program as well.
Madrid | Saturday, June 23–Monday, June 25
We will enjoy private tours of the Prado and the Reina Sofia museums, the unbeatable major art institutions of this cultural capital. But we will also experience Madrid’s contemporary art scene and cultural life. We will visit a splendid private collection and meet some great Spanish artists. An authentic Flamenco evening is also part of the program. And of course, we will savor the best food in local favorites and hidden gems. From Madrid, we will take a stunning drive to Bilbao and stop for lunch in the shade of the incredible cathedral of Burgos.
Bilbao | Tuesday, June 26–Wednesday, June 27
A curator-led tour and enough time on our own to explore the Guggenheim Bilbao is definitely a part of the program. We will explore lesser-known treasures in the heart of Basque country. We meet key influencers in the local art scene and enjoy the best seafood this coastal town has to offer.
Santander | Thursday, June, 28
We will then take a short scenic drive through the Northern Spanish countryside to Santander. Here we of course visit the new Centro Botin and see for ourselves if Renzo Piano has achieved his goal: to make it seem as if the museum flies. Thursday evening we will hop on a short flight to the final leg of the trip: Barcelona.
Barcelona | Thursday, June 28–Sunday, July 1
On the last stop of the trip, we will visit some of the most prominent artists and we have an invite to a stunning private collection. We will enjoy private tours of the Miro and the Tapies Foundations and the Picasso Museum–to name a few. Of course, the architecture of Gaudi is also very much part of the program. We visit a concert in the unbelievably beautiful Palau de la Musica. And we enjoy our ‘tapas’ and ‘cava’ with our toes in the sand of one of the great beaches.
