Join ArtTable for a meeting with the incomparable Ai Weiwei in the space of Ai Weiwei: Zodiac, which will inaugurate Jeffrey Detich's new 15,000-square-foot Hollywood gallery. Ai will speak with us about this museum-scale exhibition of both new and historic work executed in a wide variety of media, including compressed tea, crystal, marble, porcelain, wood, accumulated found objects, plastic LEGO blocks, photography, and wallpaper.

The centerpiece of the show will be Stools (2013), comprised of almost 6,000 three-legged wooden stools from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911) and the Republican period (1912-1949), gathered by the artist from villages across northern China. Made by hand by craftsman, they were replaced by metal and plastic models after the Cultural Revolution, thereby serving as symbols of China's cultural heritage, which Ai seeks to preserve. Arranged in an enormous square, the stools are at once homogeneous and unique in the manner of the Sunflowers Seeds (2010) on view at the Marciano.

Works from multiple other series by Ai are featured at Deitch, among them a new "Zodiac" piece composed from thousands of plastic LEGO bricks used to denote the twelve animal heads, sculptures inspired by a cat toy whose form echoes that of a Leonardo drawing, a collection of one-meter square cubes of different properties, and a treasure box that refers both to Chinese Imperial example and Marcel Duchamp. The back wall of the gallery will be covered with a wallpaper entitled The Animal That Looks Like a Llama But is Really an Alpaca (2015). What from a distance appears to be a decorative gold damask pattern, is actually an ominous array of surveillance cameras that evoke the artist's longstanding persecution by the Chinese government.

To hear Ai Weiwei speak about his art, thought, experience, and motivation, and share with us his intense dedication to current political and social issues, like the refugee crisis that is the subject of his most recent film Human Flow (2017), will be a privilege indeed.
