Join ArtTable PA, Jodi Throckmorton, Curator of Contemporary Art, Anna Marley, Curator of Historical American Art, and Bryn Mawr graduate students, Mechella Yezernitskaya and Laurel McLaughlin, for exclusive tours of the fascinating exhibitions currently on view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

We will begin with Beyond Boundaries: Feminine Forms. This exhibition features work from the Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The William and Uytendale Scott Memorial Study Collection of Works by Women Artists, Bryn Mawr College, with works by Kara Walker, Lesley Dill, Betye Saar, Edna Andrade, Eleanor Heller, Nancy Spero, Joan Mitchell, and Kay Walkingstick.

Conceived by graduate students, Mechella Yezernitskaya and Laurel McLaughlin of the History of Art program, in consultation with Carrie Robbins, Curator of Art & Artifacts, Bryn Mawr College, Jodi Throckmorton, and Judith Thomas, Director of Exhibitions, PAFA, this exhibition highlights and reexamines each institution's inclusive efforts to collect artworks by women. The curators explore the historical implications of stereotyping and rationales tied to gender through seven thematic constellations that seek to subvert and reclaim the “feminine” beyond biological, aesthetic and social boundaries.

Anna Marley will also offer remarks on her exhibition Graphic Women that focuses on the efflorescence of professional women artists in Philadelphia in the decades between 1880 and the early 20th century and includes work by Violet Oakley, her teacher Cecilia Beaux, and their contemporaries Mary Cassatt, Susan MacDowell Eakins, Mary Nimmo Moran, Alice Barber Stephens, and Lilian Westcott Hale among many others. Works include recent acquisitions that have never before been on view and represent the key genres and movements in which women artists participated: professional illustration, the Etching Revival, and vibrant watercolors from the golden age of American watercolor.

Jodi Throckmorton will walk the group through Nick Cave: Rescue, which places three opulent sculptures by Cave in conversation with each other with selections from PAFA's permanent collection (closes May 13).

Today’s tour will focus on the PAFA installation; but we encourage you to explore Bryn Mawr’s portion of the exhibition, through March 18, 2018, on view at the Canaday Library, Bryn Mawr College, 101 N Merion Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA.

Attendees will also have the chance to see Chuck Close Photographs, the first comprehensive survey of the photographic work of the renowned American artist, featuring 90 objects from 1964 to the present, on their own.
