Join ArtTable Northern CA for an intimate and exclusive workshop at the FOR-SITE Foundation.

We will begin with an introduction to the Sanctuary exhibition by Cheryl Haines, Founding Executive of FOR-SITE Foundation, followed by an art of storytelling workshop, conducted by Justina Wu and Megan McMahon of Beyond Borders Storytelling. The exhibition consists of thirty-six international artists considering the nature of sanctuary through an interactive installation of hand-woven rugs, offering visitors a multiplicity of perspectives on this basic human need.

All attendees will be able to touch, walk and sit on the Sanctuary artist rugs during the presentation. Attendees will be asked to remove their shoes before entering the exhibition space. Socks are provided free-of-charge for those who need them.

This workshop covers an introduction to storytelling, including elements of a good story, stylistic choices of fact vs color, how to hook the audience, building tension, delivering a strong ending, and speaking in front of large groups.

Attendees will participate in hands-on exercises to develop their own story idea. Come prepared with a story or two that you would like to perfect. This program will teach participants valuable storytelling skills for improving the quality of professional and personal relationships. Attendees will improve their ability to share personal experiences in a compelling and engaging manner.

Following the event, attendees may convene at a no-host gathering at The Interval and The Long Now Foundation Café and Bar at Lower Fort Mason.

About the Presenters
Justina Wu
has had more professional lives than a
cat, if cats had careers. So far she has been a data
monkey, writer, journalist, marketing guru, content
developer, crisis counselor, tulip transportation
manager, uncertified photocopier mechanic, infectious
disease educator, health care researcher, and of course,
storyteller. She has lived and worked in Kenya,
Thailand, Houston, Chicago, New York and Arcata, CA,
but is glad to have found her heart in San Francisco.

Megan McMahon spent 10 years teaching,
entertaining, and running the show in a middle
school classroom and truly understands the value
of being able to tell a good story (adding a couple
dance moves doesn’t hurt). A former Peace Corps volunteer, a former art director, and a former
gourmet hot dog retailer, she brings a diverse background and definite enthusiasm to the
storytelling experience. Megan fell in love with live storytelling in 2014, and the romance hasn’t
ended--believing that a good story has multiple layers of meaning, it not only creates connections
with the audience, but provides the teller the opportunity to deeply reflect on their experiences.

Parking and Location:
Limited free parking is available in the Bay Street Lot of Upper Fort Mason. Paid parking is available in the Lower Fort Mason parking lot (enter at Buchanan Street and Marina Boulevard), which connects to Upper Fort Mason by stairs (follow signs).

The Chapel is located in upper Fort Mason, which is accessed by a separate vehicle entrance than the main campus. The entrance for the Chapel is off Bay Street at Franklin.

Thank you to Michelene Stankus and Claudia Worthington-Hess for organizing this event.
