Join ArtTable for a curator-led walk-through of the Museum of the African Diaspora’s Fall exhibition programming dedicated to photography with global, national and hyperlocal frameworks. Opening September 4, these exhibitions include Africa State of Mind, an internationally traveling exhibition dedicated to contemporary photographic practices of African artists today, The Sacred Star of Isis and Other Stories, a photographic investigation of familial diaspora in the work of Adama Delphine Fawundu, and a presentation of the video work of Rashaad Newsome.

Additionally, the tour will highlight MoAD’s Emerging Artists Program exhibition on view at MoAD, DeShawn Dumas: Against the End of History.

There will be a 6:00pm reception in the MoAD lobby, followed by tour at 6:30pm and a no-host dinner at Fang nearby (660 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94105) at 7:30pm.

MoAD Director of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs and ArtTable member Emily Kuhlmann will be leading this program. Kuhlmann’s recent exhibitions include the solo presentations of Alison Saar, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Todd Gray, and Sadie Barnette. In addition to managing the curatorial program for the last five years, she coordinates the publications program and oversees MoAD’s Emerging Artists Program.

About Exhibitions:

Africa State of Mind
Africa State of Mind,
curated by Ekow Eshun with New Art Exchange, explores the work of an emergent generation of photographers from across the African continent. 15 artists from 11 different countries interrogate ideas of “Africanness” through highly subjective renderings of life and identity on the continent, along the way revealing Africa to be a psychological space as much as a physical territory; a state of mind as much as a physical location.

The Sacred Star of Isis and Other Stories
Photography by Adama Delphine Fawundu
As the only child in her immediate family born in America, Fawundu’s mixed media photographic works explore the tension between her family’s traditional Mende beliefs (Sierra Leone) and Westernized values. By incorporating ancestral gifts of colorful handmade batik fabrics and layering these complex and distorted histories, her work uncovers personal and universal cultural patterns that are present within herself and the African Diaspora.

Rashaad Newsome
STOP PLAYING IN MY FACE! and ICON

Rashaad Newsome is a multidisciplinary artist pulling intuitively from the world of advertising, the Internet, Black and Queer culture to craft compositions that walk the tightrope between intersectionality, social practice, and abstraction. MoAD will be screening STOP PLAYING IN MY FACE! and ICON in the Toni Rembi Freedom Theater through the Fall.

Emerging Artists Program
DeShawn Dumas: Against the End of History

DeShawn Dumas, a conceptual painter, centers whiteness as a militarized socio-economic order and psychodermatological framework in his work. In writing, pedagogy, and painting, the artist investigates catastrophic climate change, critical aesthetics, futures of policing, and political ontology.

Thank you to Emily Kuhlmann, Director of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs, Museum of the African Diaspora and and Dorothy Davila, Director of Program, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
