SUMMARY:*POSTPONED* Atlanta\, GA | Exhibition Tour | Women to Watch: Melissa Messina & Sierra King
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this event has been postponed: watch this space and @arttable_atl for new dates and more Atlanta Events. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable at Atlanta Contemporary for a talk and tour of the Women to Watch series exhibition led by Melissa Messina and Sierra King! This exhibition is presented at Atlanta Contemporary in partnership with the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. For the 2023 iteration of the ongoing Women to Watch series\, the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) invited guest curators Sierra King and Melissa Messina to select five woman-identifying Georgia-connected artists whose work responds to the question: When women artists envision a different world\, how does that look? \n\n\n\nWith over 60 artists initially considered\, and 16 studio visits conducted\, these 5 artists represent a diverse range of artistic excellence\, age\, backgrounds\, and geographic locations. Their practices push the boundaries of their chosen media and the exhibition’s thematic inquiry. \n\n\n\nMELISSA MESSINA is a nationally recognized arts professional who has developed thought-provoking exhibitions\, dynamic site-responsive projects\, and engaging educational public programming both independently and in leadership positions at museums and non-profit arts organizations. \n\n\n\nSIERRA KING is an Archivist and Curator. Her creative and arts administration work is dedicated to documenting\, preserving\, and archiving the work of Black Women Artists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition is presented at Atlanta Contemporary in partnership with the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. \n\n\n\n\nAtlanta Contemporary believes in the power of contemporary art to change lives and that anyone—regardless of age\, race\, gender\, socio-economic status\, or any perceived limitations—should have access to innovative and engaging contemporary art and programs. Rooted in the very fabric of our founders\, Atlanta Contemporary has been artist-centered and art-driven since 1973. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs one of the first of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) committees\, the Georgia Committee (GA NMWA) realized the importance of a museum advocating for women artists and swiftly formed as a committee in 1986. Thirty-five years later\, we are proud to support NMWA and to champion Georgia women artists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $10\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\nPublic – $25\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Atlanta\, GA | Artist Talk & Exhibition Tour with Jessica Blinkhorn
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special tour and meet and greet with artist Jessica Blinkhorn. \n\n\n\nSPANKBOX is a photographic installation depicting individuals with varying disabilities from all communities in sexualized\, hypersexualized poses and situations. We at SPANKBOX ask that the “for now” non-disabled community evaluate their preconceived notions regarding disability and sexuality. How do you perceive disability and sexuality? What standard do you hold us to? Do you view us as an asexual monolith? Do you see our bodies as objects to commodify and or fetishize? Do you celebrate the disabled body and all of its beauty? \n\n\n\nThe mission at SPANKBOX is to provide a safe space where the community can self-educate by examining the disabled body and asking questions without shame. In return\, we ask that you engage in conversation with us by answering one of the many questions provided by our participants (SPANKERS). By educating the community about disability and sexuality\, we celebrate our identities as autonomous\, dimensional individuals rather than sick\, broken\, and vulnerable. When a community has been identified as weak\, that community will likely be preyed upon. \n\n\n\nIt is up to us\, society as a whole\, to engage in a conversation without pretense\, ego\, and hurt feelings. To effectively promote actual change\, we have to have uncomfortable conversations. It’s time for the disabled community to be seen for our abilities! We love\, celebrate\, work\, empathize\, motivate\, and move forward through an intrepid landscape of social barriers that should not exist in today’s time. \n\n\n\nDuring her residency at UUCA\, Jessica plans to focus on two bodies of work – REVERENCE (memory portraits) and SPANKBOX\, curating a show for the Pulgram Gallery at UUCA\, working with disabled and lgbtq+ youths and seniors by way of providing low-cost art classes\, providing an artist talk for the community and congregation\, and\, lastly\, with community support\, a prom for disabled and lgbtq+ youths. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests/General Public – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease note that all income from program fees goes toward program expenses and ArtTable’s internal costs for organizing programs. \n\n\n\nPlease review the below before registering:\n\n\n\n Health & Safety Masks are suggested and encouraged but optional.  Please note that by registering for this event you consent to have your contact information shared with ArtTable to be used in the event that contact tracing is needed. Accessibility The facility is ADA-compliant with wheelchair accessibility and offers auditory options for navigating the onsite exhibitions and facility. Druid Hills Rd. NE Atlanta\, Georgia 30329. Blinkhorn’s work advocates for the LGBTQ+\, disabled\, and aging communities. SUMMARY:Atlanta\, GA | Atlanta Art Week - Private Collection Tour with Cathy Byrd and Curator's talk with Arnika Dawkins
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable in Atlanta\, GA during the inaugural Atlanta Art Week for a private collection visit with Cathy Byrd and an exhibition visit and tour of Wendi Schneider | States of Grace at Arnika Dawkins Gallery\, with gallery founder and owner Arnika Dawkins. \n\n\n\nCathy Byrd invites ArtTable members into her 400 sq ft studio for a conversation about how she creates a sense of place with art\, objects\, and books collected since the 1970s in the U.S.\, Europe\, South America\, Africa\, and Asia.  \n\n\n\nArnika Dawkins Gallery is pleased to present States of Grace\, a solo exhibition featuring a series of stunning photographic gilded pigment prints by Denver-based photographer Wendi Schneider during the inaugural edition of Atlanta Art Week. Drawn to the serenity she finds in elegant organic forms\, Schneider creates unique objects of reverence to preserve vanishing beauty in our vulnerable environment. Schneider is a photographic artist who seeks beauty in a world that challenges our sense of inner peace. Her intuitive photographs center around “illuminated images inspired by the grace of organic forms: flora\, fauna\, and figura.” Each image is unique\, differing in color or texture\, and\, as the effect of gilding inherently varies\, resulting in photographic objects that shimmer with luminosity and elegance. Schneider helps us find our way back to beauty one image at a time. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $25Member Guests/Non-Members – $35Member + Guest – $60\n\n\n\nNot a member? Art censorship\, the environment\, activism\, public and performance art\, the global diaspora\, and technology are among her research interests. Broadening access to art and culture has been her priority since 2011. In a roving audio podcast that she launched from a park bench in Brooklyn\, Byrd demystifies contemporary art through stories appealing to the cognoscenti and the curious. She engages with today’s issues and ideas on a platform that fuses digital media\, sound art and social practice. Fresh Art International has streamed programming from the Everglades and Key West\, São Paulo\, Paris\, Berlin\, Dominican Republic\, Trinidad\, and Dakar. The first 300 episodes of the podcast feature emerging and established artists\, curators\, writers\, designers and filmmakers\, as well as spiritual leaders\, scientists\, activists\, and environmentalists at the center and fringe of creative communities around the world. Byrd considers it a privilege to witness and document the nuanced character of our cultural landscape.  \nArnika Dawkins is the owner of her eponymous fine art photography gallery established in Atlanta in 2012. The gallerist shows work by talented emerging and mid-career artists specializing in exhibiting fine art photography by African Americans and images of people from the African Diaspora. Her passion is connecting collectors to photography that is significant\, inspiring\, and provocative. As a fine art photographer and avid collector\, herself\, she is a valuable resource to collectors and artists alike. She is passionate about the medium\, having obtained a Master of Arts in Digital Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Arnika Dawkins Gallery is a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD)\, where she serves on its board and as Education Committee chair for AIPAD Talks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nImages: Headshots courtesy of the speakers. \n\n\n\nThank you to Lauren Jensen and Waduda Muhammad\, ArtTable Chapter Leaders in Metro Atlanta\, for organizing this program.
