SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Artist Talk and Studio Visit with Francine Tint
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable on June 16th for a studio visit with Francine Tint! \n\n\n\nFrancine Tint’s practice is rooted in the exploration of color as a means of capturing and embodying light. Tint’s approach emerged within painterly abstraction\, bridging Color Field influences with the dynamic gestures of Abstract Expressionism. While grounded in this tradition\, she continually expands its boundaries\, exploring new forms of expression that challenge conventional abstract frameworks. David Ebony observes that Tint rejects rigid formalism in favor of an intuitive method\, balancing energetic movement with moments of stillness. This interplay creates what he describes as a ‘Zen feeling’—a sense of clarity and resolution within complex visual structures. Over five decades\, Tint has remained committed to discovery and reinvention. While sharing affinities with peers such as Larry Poons\, her synthesis of gesture and color distinguishes her vision. Her work is held in the permanent collections of 30 museums\, including the Neuberger Museum of Art\, the El Paso Museum of Art\, and the Chazen Museum of Art. Tint’s paintings are exhibited across the United States and Europe\, further solidifying her influence in the field of contemporary abstraction. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guest – $20\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nAll program registration fees go toward event expenses and administrative costs for the organization. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable Artist Talk programs are generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

DESCRIPTION:Josely Carvalho (b. 1942\, São Paulo\, Brazil) is an interdisciplinary artist\, poet\, and activist whose work spans printmaking\, installation\, blown glass\, public art\, and olfactory media. Informed by early memories\, including childhood memories of Paraná’s vanishing Araucaria forests\, her practice uses personal experience to explore ecological\, political\, and social themes. Josely Carvalho classifies her work as “Diaries” “Books” and “Chapters”. By approaching a broad range of materials as texts\, Carvalho unravels narrative expectations to address issues of feminism\, indigenous rights\, and shelter in her multisensory and empathetic oeuvre. \n\n\n\nCarvalho studied art and architecture in St. Louis\, Missouri\, before relocating to New York City in the 1970s\, where she became a pivotal figure in the city’s activist and Latin American artist communities. She was a leading member of Artist’s Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America. She founded The Silk Screen Project at St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery\, amplifying marginalized voices through collective creative production. In recent years\, Carvalho has emerged as a pioneer in the field of olfactory art through her ongoing Diary of Smells series\, culminating in works like Glass Ceiling: Resilience (2018)\, at at the Museum of Contemporary Art in São Paulo\, for which she received the International Art and Olfaction Sadakichi Award in 2019. \n\n\n\nHer work has been exhibited widely across the Americas\, including exhibitions at the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (Rio de Janeiro)\, the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles)\, the Museum of Contemporary Art (São Paulo)\, and the Brooklyn Museum’s landmark exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art\, 1960–1985. Carvalho’s practice has been recognized with major awards from the Creative Capital Foundation\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest" with Adrienne L. Childs
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to present a Curator-Led Tour of Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest at the Phillips Collection with Adrienne L. Childs! \n\n\n\nDrawing upon previously unknown works and archival findings\, this exhibition recovers the depth and variety of the more than three-decade career of Vivian Browne (b. 1929\, Laurel\, FL; d. 1993\, New York\, NY). The exhibition features paintings\, prints\, and works on paper across seven bodies of work\, as well as ephemera that highlight Browne’s pioneering activism and influential teaching career. Browne was a founder of the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition\, an organization that fought for Black representation in New York museums; a founder of SoHo20\, one of the first women’s art cooperatives in Manhattan; and a professor at Rutgers University (1971–92). Her signature approach to color and form challenged the neatly defined categories of abstraction and figuration\, and art and politics\, revealing a more nuanced approach to art-making that is part of Browne’s unique contribution to 20th-century art of the US. \n\n\n\nAdrienne L. Childs is an independent scholar\, art historian\, and curator. She is Senior Consulting Curator at The Phillips Collection. Her current book is an exploration of Black figures in European decorative arts entitled Ornamental Blackness: The Black Figure in European Decorative Arts\, publshed by Yale University Press. She is currently co-curator of Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest for The Phillips Collection. She recently co-curated The Colour of Anxiety: Race\, Sexuality and Disorder in Victorian Sculpture at The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds\, England. She was the guest curator of Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC\, 2020. \n\n\n\nIn April 2022 The High Museum of Art awarded Childs the 2022 Driskell Prize in recognition of her contribution to African American art and art history. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable AND Phillips Collection Members – $20 (You must be a member of both ArtTable and the Phillips to receive this price. Phillips Member ID number must be provided)\n\n\n\nArtTable Member – $30\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $40\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Boston\, MA | Curator-Led Tour of "Portia Zvavahera" with Ruth Erickson
DESCRIPTION:Gather at ICA Boston for a guided tour of Portia Zvavahera with Ruth Erickson\, Barbara Lee Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs! \n\n\n\nPortia Zvavahera (b. 1985 in Harare\, Zimbabwe) draws from her dreams to create layered paintings that evoke moments of transition and transcendence. For the artist\, the act of painting is akin to an act of worship. Across her work\, Zvavahera engages deeply with the African Pentecostal and Indigenous Shona traditions in which she was raised\, illuminating the centrality of dreams\, ancestors\, and revelation to both belief systems. The artist merges painting and printmaking techniques to conjure worlds glimpsed in her dreams\, where figures commune with spirits\, and protective comforts and nightmares collide in stirring unions. Culling from an array of sources ranging from the angels and demons of medieval European devotional art to the vibrant patterns of Zimbabwean textile designs\, Zvavahera constructs what the art historian Tamar Garb has described as “a unique and porous pictorial world.”  For the ICA\, her first solo museum exhibition in the U.S.\, Zvavahera is presenting a selection of recent paintings centered on the theme of animals\, considering how they populate her work as well as the collective imagination.   \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guests – $20\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:New York\, NY & Virtual | ArtTable's Annual Leadership Series | Art at Risk: Censorship and the Fight for Creative Freedom
DESCRIPTION:In today’s increasingly polarized cultural and political landscape\, arts professionals are grappling with urgent questions: How do institutions remain true to their missions while navigating the risks of presenting complex or controversial narratives? What role does censorship play in shaping the stories we tell through exhibitions\, acquisitions\, publications\, and programming? \n\n\n\nArtTable’s 2025 Annual Leadership Series returns with a timely conversation on the evolving responsibilities of arts institutions in an era of heightened scrutiny and constrained freedoms. This year’s panel features acclaimed artist Marilyn Minter\, cultural leader and curator Sara Reisman\, and art lawyer Katherine Wilson-Milne\, in conversation with moderator Elizabeth Larison\, Arts and Culture Advocacy Program Director at National Coalition Against Censorship. Scroll down to learn more about our panelists! \n\n\n\nTogether\, these thought leaders will explore the challenges and strategies involved in sustaining truthful\, inclusive storytelling across all areas of the arts ecosystem. From debates over funding and institutional values to efforts to protect curatorial independence and artistic freedom\, the discussion will offer insights for anyone invested in the future of the arts. \n\n\n\nWhether you work in a museum\, manage a gallery\, support artists through legal or philanthropic means\, or collect and preserve art\, this event offers critical perspectives and practical strategies for navigating today’s cultural crossroads. \n\n\n\nJoin us on September 25\, 2025\, for this vital dialogue and an opportunity to engage with leading voices at the intersection of art and public discourse. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable at El Museo del Barrio for a Curator-Led Tour of Coco Fusco: Tomorrow\, I Will Become an Island with Zuna Maza! \n\n\n\nEl Museo del Barrio is proud to present the first U.S. survey of influential Cuban-American artist\, writer\, and activist Coco Fusco (b. 1960\, lives in New York). SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Anonymous Was a Woman: Jae Ko | linn meyers | Joyce J. Scott | Renée Stout" with Dr. Vesela Sretenović
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Anonymous Was A Woman: Jae Ko | linn meyers | Joyce J. Scott | Renée Stout at The Kreeger Museum\, led by exhibition curators Dr. Vesela Sretenović. \n\n\n\nAnonymous Was a Woman: Jae Ko | linn meyers | Joyce J. Scott | Renée Stout\, dovetails with the recent group exhibition\, Anonymous Was a Woman: The First 25 Years organized by and presented at the New York University’s Grey Art Museum\, April 1-July 19\, 2025\, and co-curated by Nancy Princenthal and Vesela Sretenović. \n\n\n\nThe Grey exhibition celebrated the first quarter-century of the Anonymous Was a Woman (AWAW) grant program\, established in 1996 by visionary philanthropist and artist Susan Unterberg. The program is dedicated to supporting mid-career women artists living and working in the United States. Its name refers to a phrase in Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own\, which underscores the challenges that creative women have historically faced in a male-dominated society.  \n\n\n\nThe Kreeger Museum’s exhibition\, curated by Sretenović\, focuses exclusively on four AWAW recipients who reside and work in the Washington\, DC metropolitan area: Jae Ko (AWAW 2012)\, linn meyers (AWAW 2023)\, Joyce J. Scott (AWAW 1997)\, and Renée Stout (AWAW 1999). While the Grey exhibition featured works created around the time of each artist’s award\, The Kreeger Museum’s presentation spotlights the most recent work of its participating artists\, picking up where the Grey show left off in 2020. Moreover\, whereas the Grey offered a broader overview of artistic production by women-artists in the first 25 years of the award\, The Kreeger Museum aims to present a more focused\, in-depth look at the new works of Ko\, meyers\, Scott\, and Stout. \n\n\n\nIn this respect\, The Kreeger Museum’s exhibition not only celebrates artists based in the DMV area —aligning with the Museum’s mission—but also extends the reach of the AWAW program beyond New York City\, further disseminating its mission: to support and bring greater visibility to the creative output of women artists. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $30\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $20\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guests – $25\n\n\n\n\n\nAll registrants for this event will be provided with a 20% discount on ArtTable’s limited edition scarf celebrating 25 Years of Anonymous Was a Woman\, created in 2021 in conjunction with ArtTable’s 45 year anniversary and the year Susan Unterberg received the Distinguished Service to the Visual Arts Award. Made of 100% silk habotai\, only a handful of scarves remain in our inventory! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nAll program registration fees go toward event expenses and administrative costs for the organization. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curator \n\n\n\nDr. Vesela Sretenović has been a long-time curator of modern and contemporary art with special interest in cross-disciplinary art practices and in bridging theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. Most recently (2009-23) she served as Director of Contemporary Art Initiatives and Academic Affairs at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC. During her tenure\, she had organized Intersections\, a series of ongoing contemporary art projects\, as well as monographic exhibitions of prominent artists including Robert Ryman\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Antony Gormley\, and the first museum retrospective of Cuban artist Zilia Sanchez. Additionally\, she oversaw academic partnership initiatives with the University of Maryland (UMD) and the University of Virginia (UVA). Prior to The Phillips\, Sretenović worked at Brown University\, the University at Buffalo SUNY\, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She is a frequent visiting faculty\, teaching modern and contemporary art history and theory\, and works as an independent curator. Sretenović holds a BA in Art History from University of Belgrade\, Former Yugoslavia\, an MA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and a PhD in Humanities from Syracuse University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage credits:Pictured (left to right): Detail\, linn meyers\, The Moon is a Thief\, 2025\, acrylic ink and acrylic gouache on linen. SUMMARY:Baltimore\, MD | Curator-Led Tour of "Amy Sherald: American Sublime" with Asma Naeem
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Amy Sherald: American Sublime at the Baltimore Museum of Art!  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition tells the story of Sherald’s vision and practice through approximately 40 paintings created from 2007 to the present—from her early\, rarely seen works to her iconic\, larger-than-life portraits of Black Americans in everyday moments. \n\n\n\nAmerican Sublime in Baltimore is more than an exhibition—it’s an occasion of civic pride and cultural affirmation. Sherald graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art\, studying under the famed painter Grace Hartigan\, and worked in Baltimore during her formative years. \n\n\n\nAsma Naeem (she/her) was appointed the Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) in January 2023. She is the eleventh director of the 110-year-old museum and also the first person of color and the first person raised in Baltimore to lead the organization. \n\n\n\nNaeem is widely recognized for her advocacy of women and underrecognized artists\, for her scholarship in contemporary and American art\, and for her vision and work in collections diversification. She had previously served as the BMA’s Interim Co-Director since June 2022\, and as the Museum’s Eddie C. and C. Sylvia Brown Chief Curator since 2018\, organizing exhibitions on the work of such artists as Candice Breitz\, Isaac Julien\, Salman Toor\, and Valerie Maynard. Her most recent exhibition\, The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century\, still on tour\, explored the political\, cultural\, and aesthetic attributes that have made hip hop a global phenomenon and established it as the artistic canon of our time. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $35\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $25\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guests – $30\n\n\n\n\nNot a member?
