We hope to gather feedback on the action plan at a series of Talk Backs which aim to gather community feedback and answer any questions you all may have. She is an Assistant Curator at MoMA PS1\, where she has worked on exhibitions including Greater New York 2021; Niki de Saint Phalle: Structures for Life (2021); Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration (2020); Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991-2011 (2019); Simone Fattal: Works and Days (2019); and Sue Coe: Graphic Resistance (2018)\, among others. She curated the 2021 Parsons MFA Thesis show\, and has worked as an independent curator on numerous projects. Her writing has been featured in publications including Texte Zur Kunst\, Frieze\, Mousse\, CURA\, and The Exhibitionist. She received her BA from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU\, and her MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies\, Bard College. \nRuba Katrib is Curator at MoMA PS1. At MoMA PS1 she has curated exhibitions such as Niki de Saint Phalle: Structures for Life (2021)\, Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991 – 2011 (2019) (co-curated with Peter Eleey)\, the retrospective of Simone Fattal in 2019\, and the solo shows of Edgar Heap of Birds (2019)\, Karrabing Collective (2019)\, Fernando Palma Rodríguez\, and Julia Phillips (2018). From 2012 – 2018 she was Curator at SculptureCenter in New York where she curated over twenty solo and group exhibitions\, including solo shows of the work of Carissa Rodriguez (2018)\, Kelly Akashi\, Sam Anderson\, Teresa Burga\, Nicola L.\, Charlotte Prodger (all 2017)\, Rochelle Goldberg\, Aki Sasamoto\, Cosima von Bonin (all 2016)\, Anthea Hamilton\, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook\, Magali Reus\, Gabriel Sierra\, Michael E. Katrib was also co-founder of the residency and exhibition space Threewalls in Chicago\, and has also held positions at the Renaissance Society and the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College\, where she currently serves on the Graduate Committee. She was a research advisor for the 2018 Carnegie International and a member of the Advisory Board for Recess\, a non-profit artist residency and exhibition space in New York. Katrib co-curated SITE Santa Fe’s 2018 biennial\, Casa Tomada\, along with José Luis Blondet and Candice Hopkins. \nAbout the exhibition\nFeaturing the work of 47 artists and collectives\, Greater New York opens up geographic and historical boundaries by expanding familiar narratives around artists and art movements in New York. Bridging strategies of the documentary and the archive on the one hand\, and surrealism and fabulation on the other\, the exhibition considers the ways that artists record experiences of belonging and estrangement. Drawing connections across the interdisciplinary practices of international and intergenerational artists\, Greater New York examines the many ways that affinities form in relation to place and through time. \nThe exhibition foregrounds the resilience of artists and artist communities in the city\, while marking ways these artists have both profoundly shaped New York\, and borne witness to its many transformations. As New York emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic\, the exhibition offers an opportunity to mourn\, celebrate\, and reconnect with artist communities. Weisman Art Foundation is dedicated to continuing the legacy and vision of Frederick R. Weisman\, an extraordinary entrepreneur\, philanthropist\, and art collector. He held an uncompromising belief in the cultural value of art and understood the importance of both the individual artist and creative process. \nIn 1982\, Frederick R. Weisman purchased the Los Angeles estate to serve as a showcase for his personal collection of 20th-century art. He and his wife Billie Milam Weisman\, an art conservator and curator\, worked together to create a unique environment located within the Mediterranean-style villa. The villa was designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann in the late 1920s and exhibits the craftsmanship characteristics of that period\, including hand-painted ceilings\, stucco details\, and wood-inlaid floors. \nIn 1991\, the Weismans added a contemporary annex\, or art pavilion\, designed by Franklin D.Israel\, to accommodate larger-scale works. Today the Foundation estate\, annex\, and surrounding gardens is made accessible to the public by appointment only on guided tours. \nMore than four hundred works of art are on display at the Foundation. The collection includes works by European Modernists including Cezanne\, Picasso\, and Kandinsky and Surrealist works by Ernst\, Miro\, and Magritte. The holdings in postwar art include works by Giacometti\, Noguchi\, Calder\, Rauschenberg\, and Johns; Abstract Expressionist paintings by de Kooning\, Francis\, Still\, and Rothko; Color-Field paintings by Frankenthaler\, Louis\, and Noland; and Pop Art by Warhol\, Lichtenstein\, Oldenburg\, and Rosenquist. \nContemporary California works include those by Ruscha and Goode\, and Super Realist sculptures by Hanson and de Andrea. These holdings are part of a larger collection that Mr. Weisman established as the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in 1982. \nCurrently under the direction of Billie Milam Weisman\, the Foundation continues to make the collection available through loans to museums worldwide\, docent tours at the Los Angeles estate\, exhibitions in public-art venues\, and the funding of several art museums\, including the Frederick R. Brodsky will be in conversation with Jodi Throckmorton\, Chief Curator at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. \n\n\n\nIn her recent book\, Brodsky explores trailblazing women\, including artists of color\, who have been innovators in the digital art arena as early as the late 1960s. Through an examination of artists’ work and feminist art theory\, Brodsky will discuss the crucial role women are playing in the art world in this digital realm\, including in new media as video\, websites and social networking\, virtual and augmented reality\, artificial intelligence\, and NFTs. Smith\, followed by a discussion with two of the exhibition artists – Nancy Buchanan and Barbara T. Smith. \nThis major group exhibition is the first to focus on the collaborations and empathic intersections between three remarkable artists in the form of drawing\, photography\, collage\, video\, performance documentation\, and architectural proposals comprising over 50 years of art making. Embracing the differences between these artists as well as their points of convergence\, the exhibition will probe various notions of being\, including the political\, scientific\, and spiritual.  \nAll three artists have deep connections to Southern California\, intersecting in the inaugural MFA program at UC-Irvine from 1969 to 1971. Buchanan\, Hafif\, and Smith all entered graduate school as mothers and were emphatically aware of the gendered expectations and hostilities toward women choosing art making as their primary pursuit\, though each presented a unique version of the struggle for liberation from the orthodoxies of gender and sexuality. All programs are non-refundable. \n\nAbout the artists\nNancy Buchanan (b. 1946\, Boston) is an artist whose work has been shown in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art\, the New Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles\, the Centre Pompidou\, the Getty Research Institute\, and was included in four of the Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time exhibitions. She was the subject of a solo screening of her videotapes at REDCAT in 2013\, and her videos have been included in group exhibitions including Agitprop at the Brooklyn Museum; RE-ACTION\, a traveling exhibition originating in Spain; and Jonny at Insitu\, Berlin. Buchanan is the recipient of four National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist grants\, a COLA grant\, and a Rockefeller Fellowship in New Media. In 2016\, she organized It’s Your Party\, a durational performance at UC Irvine’s xMPL Theater as the second event in The Art of Performance. Beginning with her participation as a founding member of F Space Gallery in Costa Mesa\, Buchanan has been involved in numerous artists’ groups including The Los Angeles Woman’s Building and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE); she has also acted as curator for several exhibitions and projects. From 1988-2012\, she taught in the Film/School at CalArts; she worked with community activist Michael Zinzun on his cable access show Message to the Grassroots for ten years and as a member of Zinzun’s LA 435 Committee; and she traveled to Namibia to produce a documentary about that country’s transition to independence from the Republic of South Africa. Buchanan lives and works in Los Angeles. \nBarbara T. Smith (b. 1931) has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area her whole life. She received a BA from Pomona College in 1953\, and MFA in 1971 from University of California\, Irvine where she was a founding member of F Space with Chris Burden and Nancy Buchanan. Smith has been represented in historic survey exhibitions including Whatever Happened to Sex in Scandinavia? at Office for Contemporary Art\, Oslo\, Norway (2009); WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution (traveling exhibition 2008-09); Drawing in L.A.: The 1960s and 70s\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2016); and in several major exhibitions as part of Pacific Standard Time organized by the Getty (2011-12)\, including State of Mind: New California Art Circa 1970\, Orange County Museum of Art\, CA and Bronx Museum\, NY; and Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974 – 1981\, Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a virtual Artist Talk with contemporary multidisciplinary artist Nneka Jones.\n\n\nGrowing up in Trinidad and Tobago was one of the main factors that has molded Nneka Jones into the artist she is today. Her astounding love for color and special attention to detail\, as influenced by her culture\, have always been prominent throughout her artistic journey. She enjoys working in mixed media\, embroidery\, textiles\, and paint\, exploring both large-scale mural work and small-scale intimate pieces. Through her practice\, she produces thought-provoking artwork that comments on social and environmental injustice\, strongly advocating for the protection of women and girls of color. These are often topics that as a society\, we feel uncomfortable addressing but are necessary to view head on for a positive change. \nSince graduating from the University of Tampa in May 2020\, Jones’ work has caught the eyes of art directors in top publications like TIME\, where she was commissioned to produce the hand embroidered flag that appears on the August 31st/September 7th 2020 issue. She was also commissioned by the Washington Post to capture the history made by Vice President Kamala Harris and even appeared as a keynote speaker for Adobe MAX; emphasizing the importance of art as a vehicle for activism. \nJones’ unique hand embroidery work has been featured in Colossal magazine\, The Jealous Curator blog\, The American Craft Council\, Embroidery Mag UK\, and Domestika. DESCRIPTION:2pm PT / 3pm MT / 4pm CT / 5pm ET\n\n\n\nBefore Silence: Afghan Artists in Exile is an online exhibition presented by Art at a Time Like This\, in partnership with PEN America’s Artists At Risk Connection(ARC).  \n\n\n\nSince the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan last August and the subsequent takeover by the Taliban\, which has a long and brutal history of censoring artistic expression\, many Afghan artists\, including writers\, musicians\, filmmakers\, and intellectuals\, have been persecuted and targeted simply for being artists. Fearing for their lives\, many artists have been forced to go into hiding\, self-censor or destroy  their creative work\, or flee the country\, putting the future of the arts and culture in the country into question.  \n\n\n\nBefore Silence presents a powerful selection of works representative of the up and coming generation of Afghan artists who have continued to create and inspire amidst insecurity and humanitarian suffering. Through photographs\, paintings\, cartoons\, murals\, and performances\, this powerful exhibition offers a complex dialogue between artists\, danger\, deprivation\, and insecurity. The artists featured in the exhibition are Ali Rahimi\, ArtLords\, Latifa Zafar Attaii\, Lida Afghan\, Mohsin Taasha\, Morteza Herati\, Naseer Turkmani\, Rada Akbar\, and Shamayel Shalizi. It was a monumental task to pull together this exhibition with the artists scattered throughout the world after fleeing Afghanistan in recent months. Click here to view our cancellation policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speakers\n\n\nRada Akbar\, born and raised in Afghanistan\, is an activist and artist who uses her art to speak out against misogyny and oppression. Her work consists of a mixture of wearable monuments\, performance\, photography and installation pieces. It has been displayed in numerous national and international exhibitions. In 2015\, she received an honorable mention in the UNICEF Photo of the Year Award. In 2020\, her art exhibit called Abarzanan—Superwomen—which celebrates pioneering Afghan women\, was featured in the New York Times\, and in 2021 she received the Prince Claus Seed Award\, MujerHoy awards and BBC 100 Women. \n  \nBarbara Pollack is the co-founder of Art at a Time Like This Inc.\, a platform for free expression for artists at times of crises. An independent curator and writer\, Pollack will be lead curator for the exhibition\, Mirror Image: A Transformation of Chinese Identity\, opening at the Asia Society Museum in June. In 2021\, she organized Lu Yang: DOKU—Digital Alaya at Jane Lombard Gallery. Since 1994\,  Pollack has written extensively for  a broad range of arts publications and catalogues and monographs and is also a professor at the School of Visual Arts.  \n  \nJulie Trébault is the director of the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC)\, a project of PEN America. ARC safeguards the right to artistic freedom by connecting threatened artists to support\, building a global network of resources for artists at risk\, and forging ties between arts and human rights organizations. She has nearly two decades of experience in international arts programming and network-building\, including at the Museum of the City of New York\, the Center for Architecture\, the National Museum of Ethnology in The Netherlands\, and the Musée du quai Branly in Paris. Trébault holds a Master’s Degree in Arts Management from Sorbonne University\, a Master’s Degree in Archeology and Cultural Heritage from the University of Strasbourg\, and taught at Fordham University. She is co-author of Freedom of Artistic Expression Through the Lens of the Sustainable Development Goals (Springer\, 2021) and A Safety Guide for Artists (ARC\, 2021)\, and has been instrumental in the creation of numerous reports on the state of artistic freedom of expression. These include but are not limited to Arresting Art: Repression\, Censorship\, and Artistic Freedom in Asia and Art under Pressure: Decree 349 Restricts Creative Freedom in Cuba. Julie and ARC have also been featured in numerous media outlets such as Hyperallergic\, The Art Newspaper\, Artnet\, BBC News\, The Financial Times\, Al Jazeera\, Diario de Cuba\, NPR\, among others. \nAnne Verhallen is the co-founder of Art At A Time Like This\, launched in 2020 in response to the global health crisis. The non-profit arts organization supports artists working in response to crisis and current events by presenting their work online and in the public space. \nVerhallen is also an agent for visual artists and is currently the director of partnership at 291 Agency. She has worked on projects for many leading artists\, including Kehinde Wiley\, Robert Wilson\, Friedrich Kunath\, DRIFT\, and Lily Kwong.  In this capacity\, Verhallen has overseen large-scale activations and installations in collaboration with brands in the luxury industry. Our tour will be led by Curatorial Assistant\, Madeline Weisburg. Bringing together over fifty years of work\, the exhibition provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of the artist’s vision.  \n\n\n\nArtist\, author\, educator\, and organizer\, Faith Ringgold is one of the most influential cultural figures of her generation. Her career links the multi-disciplinary practices of the Harlem Renaissance to the political art of young Black artists working today. For sixty years\, Ringgold has drawn from both personal autobiography and collective histories to both document her life as an artist and mother and to amplify the struggles for social justice and equity. From creating some of the most indelible artworks of the civil rights era to challenging accepted hierarchies of art versus craft through her experimental story quilts\, Faith Ringgold has produced a body of work that bears witness to the complexity of the American experience. \n\n\n\nThis program is $35 and open to ArtTable members only. She is a Curatorial Assistant at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and Curatorial Researcher for the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). Madeline has previously held curatorial positions at the Jewish Museum and in the Department of Photography at MoMA. She was 2017–18 Curatorial Fellow at the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University. Her writing has appeared in Art in America\, The Brooklyn Rail\, post at MoMA\, and elsewhere. She holds an MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History: Critical and Curatorial Studies (MODA) from Columbia University as well as a dual BA in Art History and BFA in Studio Art from Tufts University in partnership with the School of the Museum Fine Arts\, Boston. \n\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\n\n\nFaith Ringgold: American People is the most comprehensive exhibition to date of this groundbreaking artist’s vision\, highlighted by the first full presentation of her historic French Collection in over twenty years along with many other quintessential works that will be exhibited together for the first time in decades. Featuring Ringgold’s best-known series\, this show examines the artist’s figurative style as it evolved to meet the urgency of political and social change. The exhibition also foregrounds her radical explorations of gender and racial identities\, which the artist incorporates into the rich textures of her paintings\, soft sculptures\, and story quilts. Among the most important artworks of the past fifty years\, Ringgold’s fabric works combine local traditions and global references to compose a polyphonic history of this country. DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Whitney Museum of American Art for one of two private tours of the 2022 Whitney Biennial. \n\n\n\nThe 80th edition of the biennial\, entitled Quiet as It’s Kept\, will showcase the work of 63 artists and collectives distributed throughout most of the museum’s space. \n\n\n\n“Quiet as It’s Kept—a colloquialism typically said before the statement of something obviously meant to be kept a secret—was selected as the title after the co-organizers\, curators David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards\, were inspired by the usage of the phrase in a Toni Morrison novel and as the title of a Max Roach album. ‘The 2022 biennial arrives at a time haunted by a global pandemic and plagued by ongoing racial and economic inequities and polarizing politics\,’ says Adam D. In addition to her work with the Art Institute\, Denise is a member of the boards of the Arts Club of Chicago and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and previously served on the executive committee of the Chicago Community Trust\, the board of visitors of Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University\, and the boards of the Chicago Humanities Festival and the Chicago Public Library. \nAlison Cuddy is a Chicago-based writer\, curator\, and programmer. She has extensive experience developing programs for diverse audiences including eight years as the Marilynn Thoma Artist Director of the Chicago Humanities Festival and more than a decade at Chicago’s NPR affiliate WBEZ\, where she hosted the award-winning flagship program\, Eight Forty-Eight and was named among “the most powerful women in Chicago journalism” by local media journalist Robert Feder. She brings a collaborative approach to her work in search and in working with her clients. She manages a diverse portfolio of executive searches and has placed leaders at the country’s most recognized organizations in higher education\, foundations and institutes\, and arts and cultural organizations\, including museums\, orchestras\, ballet companies\, and more. \nAnne most recently served as the chief development professional for the San Francisco Symphony\, where she played a senior management role\, working closely with the Board of Governors and leading the Symphony’s contributed revenue division. Previously she served as San José State University’s Associate Vice President of Development and Campaign Director\, leading the university through its first comprehensive campaign\, which exceeded its goal of $200 million by $9 million\, one full year in advance of the publicly-announced deadline. Prior to her work in the Bay Area she held fundraising positions at the University of Kansas and Boston University. \nShe holds a M.A. degree in Education from Boston University and a B.A. in French from the University of Kansas\, which included studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris.  \nSuzanne Julig\, Owner of Suzanne Julig Art Advisory\, is a fine art professional with more than three decades in the field. Over the past several years she has expanded her expertise to include Career Consulting to provide individuals with the tools to pursue and secure employment in the art world. Most recently\, Suzanne was a member of the senior management team at Christie’s Education\, serving as the Career Services Officer. Prior to that\, she was a Director at three New York galleries\, specializing in contemporary as well as American and European art of the 19th and 20th century\, before founding her Art Advisory business in 2008\, through which she provides expertise to collectors in the acquisition of art and management of collections. Suzanne has taught courses at NYU and Sotheby’s Institute of Art\, in addition to organizing exhibitions\, leading museum and gallery tours\, and lecturing to private groups on a variety of art-related topics.
