SUMMARY:Virtual | DEIA Action Plan Talk Back - Programming
DESCRIPTION:10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET\nAt its inception\, ArtTable was a driving force for gender parity in the arts – creating community\, driving policy change\, and building a network of resources for women to forge a confident and unquestioned place as leaders in the art world. At the core of our mission\, we aim to advance the leadership of women in the visual arts by expanding opportunities for women from diverse backgrounds and at all stages of their careers. It is with our mission in mind that we have outlined an action plan for ensuring that diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility remain at the center of our organization. \nWe invite you all to read our proposal for furthering the key ideas of diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility in our organization. We hope to gather feedback on the action plan at a series of Talk Backs which aim to gather community feedback and answer any questions you all may have. This third and final Talk Back will focus on the Programming portions of the action plan. \nIn advance of the Talk Back\, please submit your questions here to allow for adequate preparation. \nIf you are unable to attend or would like to provide anonymous feedback\, you can do so on our DEIA Community Engagement form. \n \n  \n(You will receive an email confirmation containing the Zoom link.) \nAccessibility: Please note that this program will offer live closed captioning. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER - SoCal | Tour & Artist Talk with Nancy Buchanan & Barbara T. Smith
DESCRIPTION:11:30am PT\nPlease join us for an in-person tour of how we are in time and space: Nancy Buchanan\, Marcia Hafif\, Barbara T. Smith\, followed by a discussion with two of the exhibition artists – Nancy Buchanan and Barbara T. Smith. \nThis major group exhibition is the first to focus on the collaborations and empathic intersections between three remarkable artists in the form of drawing\, photography\, collage\, video\, performance documentation\, and architectural proposals comprising over 50 years of art making. Embracing the differences between these artists as well as their points of convergence\, the exhibition will probe various notions of being\, including the political\, scientific\, and spiritual. \nAll three artists have deep connections to Southern California\, intersecting in the inaugural MFA program at UC-Irvine from 1969 to 1971. Buchanan\, Hafif\, and Smith all entered graduate school as mothers and were emphatically aware of the gendered expectations and hostilities toward women choosing art making as their primary pursuit\, though each presented a unique version of the struggle for liberation from the orthodoxies of gender and sexuality. The exhibition will be anchored by three time-based works demonstrating the overlaps between each artist’s practice and revealing the primary subjects of the exhibition—bodies\, communication\, and dwelling. \nClick here to read more about the exhibition\, on view through June 12\, 2022. \nAdmission: \n\nArtTable Members – $15\nMembers may bring a guest for an additional $20.\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Virtual | Artist Talk with Nneka Jones
DESCRIPTION:10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a virtual Artist Talk with contemporary multidisciplinary artist Nneka Jones.\n\n\nGrowing up in Trinidad and Tobago was one of the main factors that has molded Nneka Jones into the artist she is today. Her astounding love for color and special attention to detail\, as influenced by her culture\, have always been prominent throughout her artistic journey. She enjoys working in mixed media\, embroidery\, textiles\, and paint\, exploring both large-scale mural work and small-scale intimate pieces. Through her practice\, she produces thought-provoking artwork that comments on social and environmental injustice\, strongly advocating for the protection of women and girls of color. These are often topics that as a society\, we feel uncomfortable addressing but are necessary to view head on for a positive change. \nSince graduating from the University of Tampa in May 2020\, Jones’ work has caught the eyes of art directors in top publications like TIME\, where she was commissioned to produce the hand embroidered flag that appears on the August 31st/September 7th 2020 issue. She was also commissioned by the Washington Post to capture the history made by Vice President Kamala Harris and even appeared as a keynote speaker for Adobe MAX; emphasizing the importance of art as a vehicle for activism. \nJones’ unique hand embroidery work has been featured in Colossal magazine\, The Jealous Curator blog\, The American Craft Council\, Embroidery Mag UK\, and Domestika. With work in the permanent collections of the Florida Craft Art Gallery\, Ferman Art Center\, and Tampa Museum of Art\, Jones continues to broaden her professional practice and break barriers at an early stage in her a career as an inspiration to other young\, aspiring artists. \n\n\nWe hope you’ll join us to hear more from this incredible\, trailblazing artist! \n\n\n\nAdmission \n\n\n\nArtTable Circle Members – FreeAll Other ArtTable Members – $10Non-Members – $20\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan’t make the program at this time? Register anyway to receive a recording after! \n\n\n\nPlease note that this program will offer automatic closed captioning services. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\n\n\nArtTable is a 501.c.3 organization. SUMMARY:Virtual | Panel Discussion - 'Before Silence: Afghan Artists in Exile'
DESCRIPTION:2pm PT / 3pm MT / 4pm CT / 5pm ET\n\n\n\nBefore Silence: Afghan Artists in Exile is an online exhibition presented by Art at a Time Like This\, in partnership with PEN America’s Artists At Risk Connection(ARC). \n\n\n\nSince the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan last August and the subsequent takeover by the Taliban\, which has a long and brutal history of censoring artistic expression\, many Afghan artists\, including writers\, musicians\, filmmakers\, and intellectuals\, have been persecuted and targeted simply for being artists. Fearing for their lives\, many artists have been forced to go into hiding\, self-censor or destroy  their creative work\, or flee the country\, putting the future of the arts and culture in the country into question.  \n\n\n\nBefore Silence presents a powerful selection of works representative of the up and coming generation of Afghan artists who have continued to create and inspire amidst insecurity and humanitarian suffering. Through photographs\, paintings\, cartoons\, murals\, and performances\, this powerful exhibition offers a complex dialogue between artists\, danger\, deprivation\, and insecurity. The artists featured in the exhibition are Ali Rahimi\, ArtLords\, Latifa Zafar Attaii\, Lida Afghan\, Mohsin Taasha\, Morteza Herati\, Naseer Turkmani\, Rada Akbar\, and Shamayel Shalizi. It was a monumental task to pull together this exhibition with the artists scattered throughout the world after fleeing Afghanistan in recent months. This exhibition would not have been possible without unique collaboration between an arts organization and a leading human rights advocacy group. \n\n\n\nTo mark the occasion of this exceptional exhibition\, please join us for a panel discussion with Art at a Time Like This co-founders Anne Verhallen and Barbara Pollack\, conceptual artist Rada Akbar\, and director of PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection\, Julie Trebault. \n\n\n\nAdmission \n\n\n\nArtTable Circle Members – FreeAll Other ArtTable Members – $10Non-Members – $20\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan’t make the program at this time? Register anyway to receive a recording after! \n\n\n\nPlease note that this program will offer automatic closed captioning services. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\n\n\nArtTable is a 501.c.3 organization. All programs are non-refundable. Click here to view our cancellation policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speakers\n\n\nRada Akbar\, born and raised in Afghanistan\, is an activist and artist who uses her art to speak out against misogyny and oppression. Her work consists of a mixture of wearable monuments\, performance\, photography and installation pieces. It has been displayed in numerous national and international exhibitions. In 2015\, she received an honorable mention in the UNICEF Photo of the Year Award. In 2020\, her art exhibit called Abarzanan—Superwomen—which celebrates pioneering Afghan women\, was featured in the New York Times\, and in 2021 she received the Prince Claus Seed Award\, MujerHoy awards and BBC 100 Women. \n  \nBarbara Pollack is the co-founder of Art at a Time Like This Inc.\, a platform for free expression for artists at times of crises. She has nearly two decades of experience in international arts programming and network-building\, including at the Museum of the City of New York\, the Center for Architecture\, the National Museum of Ethnology in The Netherlands\, and the Musée du quai Branly in Paris. Trébault holds a Master’s Degree in Arts Management from Sorbonne University\, a Master’s Degree in Archeology and Cultural Heritage from the University of Strasbourg\, and taught at Fordham University. SUMMARY:Benefit Week | Tour of 'Faith Ringgold: American People' at the New Museum
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the New Museum after our Annual Benefit & Award Ceremony for a private tour of Faith Ringgold: American People. Our tour will be led by Curatorial Assistant\, Madeline Weisburg. Bringing together over fifty years of work\, the exhibition provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of the artist’s vision. \n\n\n\nArtist\, author\, educator\, and organizer\, Faith Ringgold is one of the most influential cultural figures of her generation. Her career links the multi-disciplinary practices of the Harlem Renaissance to the political art of young Black artists working today. For sixty years\, Ringgold has drawn from both personal autobiography and collective histories to both document her life as an artist and mother and to amplify the struggles for social justice and equity. From creating some of the most indelible artworks of the civil rights era to challenging accepted hierarchies of art versus craft through her experimental story quilts\, Faith Ringgold has produced a body of work that bears witness to the complexity of the American experience. \n\n\n\nThis program is $35 and open to ArtTable members only. Capacity is limited. \n\n\n\nNot a member? She is a Curatorial Assistant at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and Curatorial Researcher for the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). Madeline has previously held curatorial positions at the Jewish Museum and in the Department of Photography at MoMA. She was 2017–18 Curatorial Fellow at the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University. Her writing has appeared in Art in America\, The Brooklyn Rail\, post at MoMA\, and elsewhere. She holds an MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History: Critical and Curatorial Studies (MODA) from Columbia University as well as a dual BA in Art History and BFA in Studio Art from Tufts University in partnership with the School of the Museum Fine Arts\, Boston. \n\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\n\n\nFaith Ringgold: American People is the most comprehensive exhibition to date of this groundbreaking artist’s vision\, highlighted by the first full presentation of her historic French Collection in over twenty years along with many other quintessential works that will be exhibited together for the first time in decades. Featuring Ringgold’s best-known series\, this show examines the artist’s figurative style as it evolved to meet the urgency of political and social change. The exhibition also foregrounds her radical explorations of gender and racial identities\, which the artist incorporates into the rich textures of her paintings\, soft sculptures\, and story quilts. Among the most important artworks of the past fifty years\, Ringgold’s fabric works combine local traditions and global references to compose a polyphonic history of this country. Long overdue\, this retrospective provides a timely opportunity to experience the art of an American icon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: Faith Ringgold\, American People Series #18: The Flag Is Bleeding\, 1967. SUMMARY:Benefit Week | Tour of the Whitney Biennial
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Whitney Museum of American Art for one of two private tours of the 2022 Whitney Biennial. \n\n\n\nThe 80th edition of the biennial\, entitled Quiet as It’s Kept\, will showcase the work of 63 artists and collectives distributed throughout most of the museum’s space. \n\n\n\n“Quiet as It’s Kept—a colloquialism typically said before the statement of something obviously meant to be kept a secret—was selected as the title after the co-organizers\, curators David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards\, were inspired by the usage of the phrase in a Toni Morrison novel and as the title of a Max Roach album. ‘The 2022 biennial arrives at a time haunted by a global pandemic and plagued by ongoing racial and economic inequities and polarizing politics\,’ says Adam D. Weinberg\, the museum’s Alice Pratt Brown director. ‘The artists in the exhibition challenge us to consider how these realities affect our senses of self and community and offer one of the broadest and most diverse takes on art in the United States that the Whitney has offered in many years.'” \n\n\n\n– Pili Swanson\, Gotham Magazine \n\n\n\nThe Whitney Biennial is the longest-running survey of American art\, and has been a hallmark of the Museum since 1932. Initiated by the Museum’s founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney as an invitational exhibition featuring artwork created in the preceding two years\, the biennials were originally organized by medium\, with painting alternating with sculpture and works on paper. Starting in 1937\, the Museum shifted to yearly exhibitions called Annuals. The current format—a survey show of work in all media occurring every two years—has been in place since 1973. More than 3\,600 artists have participated in a biennial or annual. \n\n\n\nThis is the first of two tours on Saturday\, April 9. The second is at 3:00pm. Please click here if you are looking for the 1:30pm tour. \n\n\n\nThis program is $30 for ArtTable members\, who may bring an additional guests for $45. Capacity is limited. \n\n\n\nNot a member? \n\n\n\nThis is the second of two tours on Saturday\, April 9. The first is at 1:30pm. Please click here if you are looking for the 1:30pm tour. \n\n\n\nThis program is $30 for ArtTable members\, who may bring an additional guests for $45. Capacity is limited. \n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:NoCal | The New Art Collection: NFTs and Digital Art\, presented in partnership with Art Market San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable and Art Market San Francisco for a discussion on NFTs and digital art collecting! \n\n\n\nAs the art world continues to develop amidst the ever-evolving world of digital art\, NFTs\, and cryptocurrencies\, so too must the established habits of art collectors. The past several years have seen significant developments in the digital realm\, both when it comes to digital art itself as well as purchasing art on digital platforms. NFTs have quickly become a mainstay in art world news\, with new information and initiatives being announced on a regular basis. Artists are more frequently using digital art to address gender and minority imbalances in the art world; art fairs are launching digital viewing sites and permitting non-physical galleries to show at the fair; and NFT platforms are going green. Where years ago purchasing a work of art online might have been unheard of\, now it is a common occurrence. Art\, and how we access it\, is ever-changing\, and we are all just trying to keep up. \n\n\n\nIn this discussion\, we will hear from art advisor Claudia Worthington-Hess\, Christina Steinbrecher\, co-founder of Blockchain.art\, a digital platform for artists and collectors\, and Kelani Nichole\, founder of TRANSFER\, a gallery that explores the friction between virtual studio practice and its physical instantiation. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the program and the speakers. \n\n\n\nThis program is free with fair admission and open to all. For more information about the fair and to purchase tickets\, click here. \n\n\n\nThis program is presented in partnership with Art Market San Francisco. Complimentary tickets are available for ArtTable members via the membership portal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: TBD

SUMMARY:AT Tours - Scandinavia Art Experience 2022
DESCRIPTION:Interested in this program? Please email travel@arttable.org for more information.\n\nThe light! In Scandinavia this has been an inspiration for artist throughout the ages. This alone is a reason to visit the splendid art capitals of this region. The art worlds are truly exciting with the new Munch Museum and the Twist in Oslo. Helsinki has its first Biennial this year and as a result the art world is more vibrant than ever. And of course we dive into the wonderful art scene of Copenhagen. Exceptional clean Nordic design and the amazing equally ‘clean’ cuisine are further draws. Add the stunning natural beauty and we have a ‘not-to-be missed’ destination. It is no coincidence that the three countries we will visit are home of the Top-3 of Happiest People in the world. \nITINERARY\nHELSINKI\, FinlandThe Biennial of 2020 (postponed to 2021) really put Helsinki on the art world map. We ‘dive into’ the thriving art scene and see the best it has to offer. We will meet fantastic artists and collectors in their studios and homes. Of course we will include design from the world-renowned Aalto studio. We will enjoy a special behind-the-scenes tour in the Kiasma museum. And in contrast we visit the most beautiful examples of Finnish Jugendstill architecture. \nOSLO\, Norway‘Oslo is Europe’s next great Art Capitol’ according to ARTnews.com. And we agree. The new Munch Museum is set be open this fall. It promises to be a fabulous tribute to the artist and of course we will enjoy a special visit. The Oslo art scene is booming and we include the best galleries\, museums and private collections in the program. We also make a spectacular trip north to visit the Twist Museum and the sculpture garden surrounding it. Then it is time to take in the natural beauty from the water. We board the cruise-ferry and leave Oslo behind with stunning views of the Norwegian fjords. On board we enjoy a great dinner and spend the night in a first class cabin. \nCOPENHAGEN\, DenmarkWe wake up arriving in wonderful Copenhagen. The hugely successful contemporary artist Olafur Elliason was born here and we meet some of his contemporaries. We will visit intriguing private collections. And we will enjoy visits to the Hirschsprung Collection for masterpieces from the Danish Golden Age as well as the fantastic modern and contemporary Louisiana Museum and sculpture garden. There is also time for some great (design) shopping. Of course we will eat what could be the best food you have ever tasted in some of the 25+ Michelin star restaurants of the Danish capital. A fantastic last stop on what promises to be a truly magical tour. \nMonday\, June 13Flight back home or on your way for further experiences….*Subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances \n\nTRIP DETAILS\nDATESJune 4-13\, 2022 \nDURATION9 days / 9 nights \nSTAYPerfectly located luxury hotels; First class cabin on the ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo \nMEALSBreakfast\, lunches\, dinners included (alcohol not included) \nTRAVELIncluded:Local transport by luxury coachFlight from Helsinki to OsloOvernight ferry Oslo to Copenhagen \nNot included:Trans-Atlantic flights  (Artigo will advise on preferred flights) \nPRICING / ROOM TYPES– Single occupancy  – $8\,450– Double occupancy – $7\,750 \nPAYMENT SCHEDULE (Payable to Artigo Tours): \nSeptember 1\, 2021 | 1st payment – $2\,000February 1\, 2022 | 2nd payment – $3\,000April 1\, 2022 | 3rd payment – (dependent on type of room\, see below)– Single Occupancy: $3\,450– Double Occupancy: $2\,750 \nARTTABLE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTION  \nDue by September 1\, 2021Click here to submit payment. \nMembers: $750Guests: $1100 \nAll payments made to ArtTable are final and non-refundable. \nPlease contact ArtTable at travel@arttable.org with any questions. SUMMARY:New York | Curator’s Talk with Cecilia Alemani\, Artistic Director of the 59th Venice Biennale\, on “The Milk of Dreams”
DESCRIPTION:The James Howell Foundation and ArtTable present a special curator’s talk with Cecilia Alemani\, Artistic Director of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia\, on this edition’s theme: “The Milk of Dreams.” Alemani will be in conversation with Laura Bardier\, Executive Director of the James Howell Foundation. \n\n\n\nOrganized around Leonora Carrington’s The Milk of Dreams\, the exhibition reflects on what it means to be human today. It focuses on three thematic areas in particular: the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses; the relationship between individuals and technologies; and the connection between bodies and the Earth. \n\n\n\nThis program is free and open to ArtTable Circle\, Board\, and Executive level members only. Registration is required. ArtTable Circle and Board members receive priority registration. Registration for Executive level members will open on Wednesday\, June 8\, 2022. \n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease review the below before registering:\n\n\n\n Health & Safety Face masks are optional though recommended inside the gallery. Please note that by registering for this event you consent to have your contact information shared with the James Howell Foundation and ArtTable to be used in the event that contact tracing is needed. Accessibility The James Howell Foundation is wheelchair accessible. If you would like more information about accessibility or need particular accommodations for this program\, please email Haley at programs@arttable.org. Getting There The James Howell Foundation is located in the West Village neighborhood of New York City. The nearest subway station is Christopher Street (1 and 2 trains). The exact address will be shared with attendees upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Cecilia Alemani\n\n\n\nCecilia Alemani is an Italian curator based in New York. Currently\, she is the Artistic Director of the upcoming 59th International Art Exhibition (2022) in Venice. Since 2011\, she has been the Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art\, the public art program presented by the High Line in New York. In 2018\, Alemani served as Artistic Director of the inaugural edition of Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires. In 2017\, she curated the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. \n\n\n\nAbout the James Howell Foundation\n\n\n\nThe James Howell Foundation is a proud sponsor of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia “The Milk of Dreams.” The James Howell Foundation supports Howell’s vision of committed investigation of like-minded endeavors through a variety of professional programs and projects. The Foundation creates and furthers philanthropic initiatives that empower art professionals\, curators and artists\, as a contribution to cultural and humanistic advancement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Milk of Dreams\n\n\n\n“The Milk of Dreams” takes its title from a book by Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) in which the Surrealist artist describes a magical world where life is constantly re-envisioned through the prism of the imagination. The exhibition The Milk of Dreams takes Leonora Carrington’s otherworldly creatures\, along with other figures of transformation\, as companions on an imaginary journey through the metamorphoses of bodies and definitions of the human. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is grounded in many conversations with artists held in the last few years. The questions that kept emerging from these dialogues seem to capture this moment in history when the very survival of the species is threatened\, but also to sum up many other inquiries that pervade the sciences\, arts\, and myths of our time. How is the definition of the human changing? What constitutes life\, and what differentiates plant and animal\, human and non-human? What are our responsibilities towards the planet\, other people\, and other life forms? And what would life look like without us? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to ArtTable Board member Laura Bardier for organizing this program. \n\n\n\nImage: Cecilia Alemani; Cover art for the 59th Venice Biennale Catalog

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet our current fellowship cohort and learn more about the ArtTable Fellowship Program and the opportunities it provides to emerging professionals. We are pleased to celebrate over 20 years of this impactful program in which we have partnered with 64 leading arts organizations nation-wide\, supported 127 women-identifying fellows\, and dispersed over $371\,000 in stipends for the fellows since its inception. The Fellowship provides quality experiences and mentorship to women-identifying graduate students and emerging professionals from backgrounds generally underrepresented in the field to aid their transition from academic to professional careers. Through one-on-one mentoring relationships at select museums and cultural organizations\, fellows have the opportunity to work with established leaders and gain exposure to a range of professional activities. \nThe 2022 ArtTable Fellows\nCheyene Adams | The Studio Museum in Harlem | New York\, NYLara Arafeh | The Baltimore Museum of Art | Baltimore\, MDAlexandria Bingham | Capital One Art Program | Tysons\, VACandace Borders | Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis | St. Louis\, MOAmanda Elena Brito | Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center | Oklahoma City\, OKLulu Luyao Chang | The James Howell Foundation | New York\, NYMichelle Huynh Chu | Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum | New York\, NYRebeca Cintrón-Loáisiga | The Metropolitan Museum of Art | New York\, NYYocari De los Santos | CALA Alliance | Phoenix\, AZSophia Ellis | The Morgan Library & Museum | New York\, NYLuiza Repsold França | El Museo del Barrio | New York\, NYKimari Jackson | Seattle Art Museum | Seattle\, WAStefanie Jason | Amant Foundation | Brooklyn\, NYJuliet Johnson | Materials & Applications (M&A) | Los Angeles\, CATatyana Neal | American Indian Artists Inc.
