DESCRIPTION:Join us on Governors Island for VIP Preview of the Portal Art Fair\, including a discussion with the Founders of 4Heads Artist-in-Residence and an opportunity to meet with the artists in their studios! Light refreshments will be provided. Please note that there are two time slots for this program beginning at 4:15 PM or 6:15 PM. \n\n\n\nThis is the 15th Anniversary of the 4Heads Organization on Governors Island. The founders will share their experience in starting this non-profit arts organization\, how they grew and expanded over the years\, artist success stories\, and how they adapted and adjusted due to the pandemic. \n\n\n\nThe current 8 Artists-in-Residence will give insight into their experiences and installations\, giving individual talks and a VIP preview before the public exhibition taking place from August 5-7. Each artist was assigned a different area of the house and allowed the freedom to transform the space. \n\n\n\nGovernors Island Art Fair (now called Portal: GI) was first launched in 2008\, and was one of the very first major art events to take place on Governors Island. As interest in the Island as a cultural destination has grown\, in particular over the last several years\, 4heads has remained steadfast in maintaining its presence\, continuing to provide working artists with a place to show new and recent work and to build their network of support – both among peers and the public. \n\n\n\nGovernor’s Island is open late on Friday and Saturday nights\, with the last ferry to Manhattan departing at 10 PM. Guests are welcome to stay on the island\, watch the sunset\, and enjoy a drink. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $10Member Guests/Non-Members – $20\n\n\n\nPlease note that your ferry to Governors Island is not included with your ticket. SUMMARY:Virtual | Landmarks: A Discussion on Public Art\, with Sarah Oppenheimer & Andrée Bober
DESCRIPTION:2pm PT / 3pm MT / 4pm CT / 5pm ET\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a virtual conversation between artist Sarah Oppenheimer and Andrée Bober\, founding director and curator of Landmarks\, the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin. The discussion will offer an inside look at C-010106\, Oppenheimer’s recent commission for the university’s College of Engineering. Oppenheimer and Bober will introduce the work and share insights on developing a major outdoor public art project within a unique and complex architectural setting. \n\n\n\nC-010106 consists of two structures positioned at opposite ends of a new pedestrian footbridge on the Texas Engineering campus. Each structure features four panes of glass⎯ two reflective\, diagonal sheets sandwiched between two vertical sheets. At the intersection of the four panes\, the glass passes through an incision in the bridge’s surface\, enabling pedestrians on top of the bridge to see the reflections of those underneath\, and vice versa.  \n\n\n\nOppenheimer pushes the boundaries between sculpture and architecture\, questioning the limits of both mediums. The artist shifts our frame of spatial reference\, displacing our experience of inside and out\, and inverting our sense of what is near and far. In doing so\, Oppenheimer heightens our awareness of the shared environment and creates unexpected opportunities for social exchange. \n\n\n\nC-010106 is Oppenheimer’s first entirely outdoor public work and is among the artist’s largest works to date. Sited on the Peyton Yates Family footbridge connecting the Engineering Education and Research Center (EERC) to the new Gary L. Building upon a long term loan with the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, she has commissioned major works by artists such as Ann Hamilton\, José Parlá\, Nancy Rubins\, Jennifer Steinkamp\, and James Turrell. Bober also created Landmarks Video in 2010\, an ongoing series of video art. She previously led the Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati through the successful completion of its Zaha Hadid designed facility\, both as deputy and then acting director. Bober studied art history and museology at The University of Texas at Austin\, practiced painting conservation in Vienna\, Austria\, and earned a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from Columbia University in New York. Her recent publications include The Collections: The University of Texas at Austin (2016) and Landmarks (2018). She lives with her family in Chevy Chase\, Maryland. \n\n\n\nAbout Sarah Oppenheimer\n\n\n\nSarah Oppenheimer (b. 1972\, Austin\, Texas) has lived and worked in New York City since earning a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University in 1995 and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University in 1999. Oppenheimer’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Kunstmuseum Thun\, Switzerland (2020); MASS MoCA\, North Adams\,Massachusetts (2019); the Wexner Center for the Arts\, Ohio State University\, Columbus\,Ohio (2017); the Pérez Art Museum Miami\, Florida (2016); MUDAM: Musée d’ArtModerne Grand-Duc Jean\, Luxembourg (2016); and Kunsthaus Baselland\, Muttenz\,Switzerland (2014). The artist is a recipient of the Rome Prize Fellowship (2011–12)\, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship (2009)\, and Guggenheim FoundationFellowship (2007). SUMMARY:New York | Annual Leadership Series - Latinx and Latin American Identity and Representation in the Visual Arts
DESCRIPTION:ArtTable is pleased to present the 2022 Annual Leadership Series\, focusing on Latinx & Latin American Identity & Representation in the Visual Arts.  \n\n\n\nThe 2022 Armory Show’s fair-wide focus on Latinx and Latin American Art is the culmination of decades-long efforts of critical forerunners in the field\, chief amongst them the incredible visionaries on this panel. Latinx representation in the arts is not simply “having a moment;” Latinx and Latin American artists and arts professionals have and continue to contribute to the development of the culture and history of the United States. Through establishing curators of Latin American/Latinx Art at key cultural institutions and sharing their collections or the curation of exhibitions in these public spaces\, passionate innovators\, such as Estrellita Brodsky and Patricia Phelps de Cisneros\, assisted these visionaries in staying the course to ensure today’s transnational understanding and authentic engagement with the art produced by those who hail from the non-Anglophone nations of the Western hemisphere\, as well as those who have joined the U.S. population from these countries. There is added pressure\, applied to the United States in particular\, to recognize its fellow “America”n countries due to the phenomenon Dr. Mari Carmen Ramirez termed “Latinization\,” the influence of those of Latin American descent as the largest ethnic group in the U.S.\, since historically their contributions have been minimized and excluded in the canon of art history\, both in the Americas and internationally.  \n\n\n\nThe speakers on this panel will share their experiences of the past\, their plans for the present\, and how we can all move forward in the future to continue bringing Latinx/Latin American arts and culture to the forefront of the art world. \n\n\n\nThe program will be moderated by CJ Greenhill Caldera\, Post-War and Contemporary Specialist and Head of Sale\, Americas at artnet\, with panelists: \n\n\n\nMarysol Nieves | VP and Senior Specialist\, Latin American Art\, Christie’sGabriela Palmieri | Founder and Principal\, Palmieri Fine Art\, Inc.E. She has also been instrumental in bringing such previously under recognized women artists to the auction market as Zilia Sánchez and Olga Albizu. Prior to joining Christie’s in 2011\, Marysol was an independent curator and art advisor working with institutional\, corporate\, and private clients. Additionally\, she has held various positions in the museum and for-profit art sectors\, including Vice President and Specialist\, Latin American Art\, Sotheby’s\, New York; Senior Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art\, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico\, San Juan; Director of Visual Arts\, Americas Society\, New York; and Senior Curator\, The Bronx Museum of the Arts\, New York. \nGabriela Palmieri is the Founder and Principal of Palmieri Fine Art\, Inc.\, a bespoke full-service Art firm based in New York City. Prior to establishing PFA\, Inc.\, in 2016\, Ms. Palmieri led a distinguished 17-year career at Sotheby’s\, where she rose to Chairman of Contemporary Art\, Americas\, and was recognized as one of the most respected in the auction industry as a leading specialist in Post-War Art. \nMs. Palmieri founded PFA\, Inc. in order to unequivocally provide her clients with unbiased\, objective and transparent counsel in the increasingly complex and nuanced art market. In her independent role she is committed to providing impartial advice and counsel for established and new collectors aimed at making informed acquisitions\, which requires careful analysis and due diligence. Still very much part of the auction world\, in her present capacity\, she advised every aspect of the prestigious Visionaries: Works from the Collection of Emily and Jerry Spiegel\, which sold at Christie’s in May 2017 for $128\,000\,000. Carmen Ramos is chief curatorial and conservation officer at The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. There she leads the curatorial and conservation teams as they serve the nation and beyond through collections development\, ground-breaking scholarship and exhibitions\, and art conservation. Ramos most recently served as acting chief curator and curator of Latinx art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, where she built one of the largest collections of Latinx art at a museum of U.S. art. She organized award-winning exhibitions at SAAM including ¡Printing the Revolution!\, Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art\, and Down These Mean Streets: Community and Place in Urban Photography. Before prior to the Smithsonian\, she was a curator at the Newark Museum and worked on early DEAI initiatives at The Brooklyn Museum. What are 3 things that would help change this burden and enhance this balance? \n\n\n\nWhat are the ways in which women can help other women while also enhancing their own leadership roles? How have you already incorporated these into your practice? \n\n\n\nThese are the prompt questions that ArtTable provided to several of our current members who currently hold or have held leadership positions within the art world. Presented in partnership with the CAA (College Art Association) 50th Anniversary Celebration of Feminism + Art\, ArtTable is pleased to present the first program in the new The AT Forum Series: Women in Leadership\, a Pecha Kucha-style program welcoming leading women in the arts to provide their insight and expertise on leadership\, equity\, and intersectional feminism. \n\n\n\nThe prompt questions that were provided to the speakers could easily be answered in hours-long conversations or lengthy essays. In this Pecha Kucha-style program\, our speakers have been provided with just 3 minutes each to respond to one of the prompt questions. After hearing from some of the speakers\, all attendees will go into breakout rooms for a group discussion\, after which the others speakers will address a different prompt question. \n\n\n\nThe AT Forum is a new recurring program series in which ArtTable members are invited to speak to a specific topic in a Pecha Kucha-style format\, followed by breakout room discussions for all attendees to get involved. Previously\, Laura led US Art & Finance for Deloitte\, the world’s largest business consulting firm\, serving blue-chip auction houses\, collectors\, galleries\, governments\, museums\, and financial institutions. Earlier in her career\, Laura served Democrat and Republican Administrations in a number of international-facing roles\, including as head of intelligence for the FBI Art Crime Team. Laura holds an MA in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art and an MA in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. She is Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) compliant through March 2023. \nTanya Desdunes\, a Haitian-American and African- American living in Miami\, Florida since 2014\, has worked with Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator\, Inc. since 2018 in multiple capacities. Desdunes holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in History from St. John’s University. She joined DVCAI as the Executive Director in July 2021 and is excited to uphold artistic representation and cultural preservation of the Caribbean and Latin Diaspora arts community in South Florida. \n  \nValerie Gillespie is an independent curator based in Dallas. She holds a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of New England in Portland and curatorial practice from New York University. Her undergraduate degree is in Studio Art and Spanish from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg\, Virginia. During her years abroad in Santiago de Compostela\, Spain\, Valerie studied art and architecture. While completing her artist in residence program with Università Iuav di Venezia in Venice\, Italy\, she studied painting under the guidance of Maurizio Pellegrin. Valerie currently is the Director of Fine Arts at the Winston School and owner of Pencil on Paper Gallery in Dallas. Some of her recent exhibitions include curatorial projects with the 500X Gallery in Dallas\, 400H Gallery in Fort Worth\, the Hawn Gallery at Southern Methodist University\, the Martin Museum at Baylor University\, and the Texas Visual Arts Association. \nCecilia Yueyi Jalboukh is the Founder and Director of Brooklyn-based YI GALLERY. YI GALLERY program features a diverse and eclectic mixture of emerging and mid-career international artists. Started in 2018 as a curatorial project exhibiting in non-traditional settings\, YI has expanded to include a collaborative exhibition space in Bushwick (2020 – 2021). The gallery program continues to evolve with a new space inside Brooklyn’s vibrant creative hub Industry City\, launched in 2021. YI is committed to offering a platform for distinctive artistic voices\, while enhancing the public’s interaction with contemporary art. \nPassionate about promoting Indigenous values\, Frances Melgarejo\, M.A. (Peruvian Quechua/Irish) is a researcher and emerging curator of Indigenous arts of the Americas. Through a feminist lens and a phenomenological approach\, she aims to unearth women artists’ muted voices to celebrate their significant contributions and learn from their unique experiences. \nCurrently\, she is an administrative assistant for the Native American arts organization in New York City\, Amerinda Inc. She was introduced to the organization as an ArtTable Fellow in the summer of 2021\, where she performed as a curatorial assistant to Native curator David Bunn Martine. Recently\, she conducted research for an exhibit on contemporary Seminole patchwork projected to show in South Florida in 2024. At this time\, she is conducting preliminary research for a New York City exhibit showcasing contemporary visual art by Indigenous women. \n \nNuria Richards is an arts professional who is passionate about art collections and the way they positively impact the market and philanthropy. She attended the Fine Arts School at the National University in Mexico City and holds an Art Business Graduate degree from Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Claremont Graduate University where she extended her academic interests to Economics\, Cultural Studies\, and Management of Corporate Collections. \nAfter studying in New York and Los Angeles\, Nuria relocated to Miami and worked in the gallery system holding the position of Executive Manager for Piero Atchugarry Gallery\, and Director of Museum Relations for Ascaso Gallery. Around this period she became part of ArtTable Florida Chapter as Chair of Programming. \nNuria supports young and emerging artists through the curatorial project Clandestina and is the founder of RICHARDS & Co\, an Art Management & Estate Planning Agency that evaluates and creates strategies for acquiring\, selling\, transferring\, and donating art. She works\, with families and individuals\, designing the sale and acquisition of works by artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat\, George Condo\, Diego Rivera\, Wifredo Lam\, Joaquín Torres-García\, Victor Vasarely\, and Leonora Carrington. Her relationship with art and involvement with museums\, galleries\, artists\, and collectors in the US and Mexico seeks to create cultural impact through the practice of art collecting. \nNuria’s goal is to generate strategies for collectors to successfully fulfill their art interests\, while positively impacting the community. She has been a conduit between secondary and primary markets for a generation of artists and collectors that were caught in the middle of a rapidly changing art world. \nTeresa Silva is the Executive and Artistic Director at the Chicago Artists Coalition\, a nonprofit organization supporting emerging and mid-career artists and curators. Silva has presented exhibitions\, talks and lectures at venues such as the Chicago Cultural Center\, Mana Contemporary\, School of the Art Institute\, Ox-Bow Art School and Artists’ Residency\, and the Artist Communities Alliance. She has served as a Visual Arts panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous others. In 2018\, she was an Artists’ Administrators Resident at the Robert Rauschenberg Residency Program in Captiva\, FL. She would continue the practice\, sometimes intermittently\, over the next six years\, writing in spiral-bound notebooks and setting no guidelines other than to “let the artist speak.” These writings were published as Daybook: The Journal of an Artist (1982). Two other journal volumes followed: Turn (1986) and Prospect (1996). This book\, the final volume\, comprises journals the artist kept from the winter of 2001 to the spring of 2002\, two years before her death. In Yield\, Truitt’s unflinching honesty is on display as she contemplates her place in the world and comes to terms with the intellectual\, practical\, emotional\, and spiritual issues that an artist faces when reconciling her art with her life\, even as that life approaches its end. DESCRIPTION:ArtTable Circle members are invited to join us for a very special collection visit at the home of Alice Sachs Zimet. \n\n\n\nAlice Sachs Zimet began to collect photography in early 1985 at a time when the medium was not recognized as a serious art form. The marketplace was nascent. There were few to no photo-only galleries\, photo-only art fairs\, photo-only auctions\, and it was rare to find a photography exhibition in a museum. While there was little acknowledgement\, Alice consistently defended her love of the medium even when most challenged her by saying ‘it’s not art’. \n\n\n\nToday\, fine art photography is a major global player with increased attention\, respect\, and market share. There are blockbuster museum shows\, photo-only auctions\, photo-only art fairs and photo-only galleries. And of course\, the number of photo collectors and prices have increased significantly. \n\n\n\nZimet’s lifelong passion for the arts began with her parents who were print collectors\, collecting images by Vuillard\, Bonnard\, Vlaminck\, Rouault\, and Lautrec\, among others. Her world was always steeped in the arts – professionally and academically. She holds two degrees in art history and her early professional career began at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \n\n\n\nHowever\, her life changed when\, for the next 20 years\, Zimet worked at The Chase Manhattan Bank where she created a new sponsorship marketing department and became Director\, Worldwide Cultural Affairs. She was given a small year-end bonus\, which soon became her collecting budget — whether for one photograph or the purchase of several. But that was her acquisition budget for the year. \n\n\n\nZimet has made a conscious effort to buy from all sources — galleries\, auctions\, benefit auctions\, art fairs and even trades. With a collecting career spanning nearly 40 years\, she has developed deep personal relationships with professionals across every aspect of the field. Her collection has grown to roughly 350 museum-quality images\, where she lives surrounded by the vast majority. “I consciously do not have storage. I live with most of my images surrounding me. With storage\, I would not be able to control my collecting impulse. So\, my walls provide that boundary.” \n\n\n\nThis program is open to ArtTable Circle members for $45 each.Members may bring a guest for $55. Originally a voicemail project\, now transformed into a large-scale exhibition in a 10\,000 square-foot warehouse\, 1-800 Happy Birthday is created by artist Mohammad Gorjestani and Even/Odd\, curated by Klaudia Ofwona Draber\, with artistic direction by Neil Hamamoto\, and presented by arts nonprofit WORTHLESSSTUDIOS with the aim of honoring the lives of those lost too soon. The families of Dujuan Armstrong\, Sandra Bland\, Philando Castile\, Stephon Clark\, Fred Cox\, Eric Garner\, Oscar Grant\, Xzavier Hill\, Donovon Lynch\, Sean Monterrosa\, Tony Robinson\, and Mario Woods are participating in the exhibition. \n\n\n\n1-800 Happy Birthday was originally created in 2020 by Even/Odd founder\, filmmaker\, and artist Mohammad Gorjestani as an ongoing voicemail project to honor Black and Brown victims of police killings and systemic racism. The project exists online at 1800HappyBirthday.com and allows loved ones and the public to leave and listen to voicemails left on the birthdays of ‘celebrants’ – those unjustly killed. Gorjestani teamed up with WORTHLESSSTUDIOS’ Founder and Artistic Director Neil Hamamoto and Curator Klaudia Ofwona Draber\, along with family members of the twelve celebrants\, to bring the digital project into the physical realm in a community-accessible\, large-scale exhibition. The show utilizes audio and video components\, a large mural created by Art1\, and personal ephemera to tell their stories. \n\n\n\nTwelve upcycled NYC pay phones are arranged on a few patches of lawn\, a concrete wall with a dedicated area for flowers hosts a large mural and balloons\, and birthday cards are available for purchase at a newsstand. Towards the back of this city landscape is a translucent building facade with an opening that leads to an interior setting – a family living room. This room acts as a resource center: filled with photos\, ephemera from the celebrants\, and educational resources. It is also meant as a space of refuge\, to rest and recharge. The exhibition design imagines a world that is just\, where streets are safe for Black and Brown people to just be. \n\n\n\nEach repurposed phone booth\, designed in collaboration with the families of the celebrants\, is dedicated to one person and features portraits of the celebrant and their family and friends. The visuals and ephemera included in the exhibition – such as Philando Castile’s favorite book and Xzavier Hill’s graduation cap – allow visitors a glimpse into the personal milestones\, interests and personalities of those being honored. These objects\, chosen by celebrant family members\, illustrate the divide between private conversation and public space. In a large-scale mural\, each celebrant is represented by their likeness. The tableau serves as a collective memory for the many individuals killed by the police\, and is designed to receive flowers\, birthday cards\, balloons\, and any other memorial offerings. The interactive and educational nature of the exhibition seeks to connect participants to each celebrant and to expand on the pervasive impact of policing and systemic racism in America. \n\n\n\nThis program is free to attend and open to ArtTable members and guests only. She is also the curator of 1-800 Happy Birthday\, an exhibition at WORTHLESSSTUDIOS honoring lives and legacies of Black and Brown people killed by the police. Klaudia has lived and led arts\, technology and strategy projects in Europe\, Africa and the United States. She also works as Head of Public Relations at Polish Cultural Institute New York. Previously she served as a consultant to the British Council Arts\, and worked at UBS\, managing arts CSR projects. Klaudia is the 2021-2022 Helena Rubinstein Fellow at the Whitney ISP Curatorial Studies Program. She is a member of ArtTable\, mentors at New Museum’s NEW INC\, and is a member of For(bes) The Culture. Klaudia holds MA in Art Business from the Sotheby‘s Institute of Art New York. She also holds MA in Economics from the Warsaw School of Economics. \nMarcia Santoni is the Executive Director of WORTHLESSSTUDIOS where she is leading efforts to provide arts access to the Bushwick/East Williamsburg community\, build capacity\, and renovate its 10\,000 square foot warehouse into a state-of-the-art fabrication facility. Marcia came to WORTHLESSSTUDIOS after spending two years as the Executive Director of Riverdale Neighborhood House\, a historic multi-service organization in the Bronx where she launched the Riverdale Food&Farm Hub. Prior to joining RNH\, she was Managing Director and COO for Pioneer Works\, the Brooklyn-based cultural center dedicated to building community through the arts and sciences. At Pioneer Works she led expansion from $3.5mm to $7mm over three years\, helping the artist founders build systems\, structure and leadership to match mission. Marcia has a BA from Wesleyan University and an MBA from Columbia School of Business. Using ethnographic and archival methods\, her research has focused on the study of cultural production\, cultural organizations\, and cultural workers–with particular attention to the dynamics of inequality in art worlds. In particular\, she has conducted a comparative investigation of the effects of unionization in arts organizations and how it shapes racialized and gendered relations in the workplace. Her research has been supported by the Mellon Foundation\, Fulbright Program\, Institute for Critical Social Inquiry\, and Janey Program in Latin American Studies. At The New School she completed her doctoral degree thanks to a Dean’s fellowship and a dissertation award. \nAbout LaKeisha M.A. Caton\nPartner LaKeisha M.A. Caton is a member of Pryor Cashman’s Labor + Employment and Litigation Groups\, and combines her comprehensive litigation background with a focus on employment-related matters to bring results to clients across the globe. Having represented both management and executives in discrimination and harassment cases\, LaKeisha brings her extensive knowledge of the law as well as her familiarity with the strategies often adopted by the opposition to every engagement. She leverages her comprehensive experience with federal\, state\, and local discrimination law and her background in litigation and dispute resolution to achieve favorable outcomes on behalf of her clients. \nRecent representations include: \n\nA Fortune 25 multinational bank in various litigations involving allegations of harassment and discrimination;\nA large global airline in connection with advice concerning employee classifications;\nVarious award-winning restaurants in numerous wage and hour litigations; and\nA global technology and consultancy firm in disputes involving restrictive covenants.\n\nWhile a student at Harvard Law School\, LaKeisha was on the Board of the Harvard Journal on Racial and Ethnic Justice. She also interned with multiple children’s rights organizations during which she represented individual clients as well as prepared for large class actions. \nAbout Gillian Gualtieri\, PhD\nGillian is a sociologist of inequality\, art\, and work. In 2018\, she received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California\, Berkeley\, where she wrote a dissertation focused on understanding how gender and ethno-racial inequality shape the work experiences of cultural entrepreneurs\, especially chefs\, under the direction of two of the leading scholars in feminist theory and work. Alongside her dissertation research\, Gillian worked closely with several campus offices to conduct program evaluation research related to sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention education on campus. After completing her PhD\, she was a Dean’s Fellow at NYU\, where she continued her research focused on inequality and artistic labor and completed several consulting projects for the university focused on diversity\, equity\, and inclusion recruitment and retention efforts at the university. \nAfter two years at NYU\, Gillian moved to Vanderbilt University’s Curb Center for Art\, Enterprise\, and Public Policy\, where she collaborated on projects related to the study of inequality in artistic labor markets\, developing expertise in SNAAP (Strategic National Arts Alumni Project) data and receiving a National Endowment for the Arts grant to fund her collaborative research. Also at Vanderbilt\, she wrote the curriculum and helped lead the NEA-funded Racial Equity in Arts Leadership program\, an evidence-based diversity\, equity\, and inclusion leadership program co-sponsored by the Curb Center and MetroArts Nashville. Georgia has gained experience at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, London\, and with an exhibition designer to catalogue and display prominent private collections including The Myers Collection at Eton College and the Portland Collection at Welbeck Abbey. She then managed The Redfern Gallery on London’s prestigious Cork Street. As Assistant Curator of the renowned\, private collection of decorative arts owned by The Goldsmiths’ Company in London\, Georgia was responsible for managing\, exhibiting and expanding a collection of more than 9\,000 objects. Georgia is a featured lecturer at Christie’s Education and speaks regularly on the subject of the role of the Collector today. \nAbout Liza Shapiro\nLiza’s interest for caring for works of art began while studying art restoration in Florence\, Italy. She earned a BA in Art Conservation from Camberwell College of Arts\, London\, and an MA in Museum Studies from University College London (UCL). Liza worked at several museums\, galleries and conservation studios\, including Tate Modern\, the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Redfern Gallery. At the oldest hat shop in the world\, Lock & Co. Hatters\, Liza preserved and catalogued more than 400 ledgers and historical material in order to curate a new\, permanent exhibition space. Liza returned home to California in 2015\, and has established a strong LA presence\, working with varied private collections and industry specialists. The Kinsey Collection has been featured in more than 30 exhibitions in over 30 states and is an unparalleled archive and celebration of the achievements and contributions of black Americans from before the formation of the United States to the present times. \n\n\n\nThe Kinseys have become known for their collection of art\, books\, artifacts\, and ephemeral objects that document the remarkable achievements and contributions of African Americans from 1595 to the present\, considered to be one of the largest of its kind. Her innovative approaches to cultivating support for artists have enriched our national cultural landscape\, and her leadership has changed the lives of hundreds of artists across the country.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to her leadership roles\, Deana is a strategic advisor to cultural foundations and philanthropic initiatives including the Ruth Foundation for the Arts and Chanel Next Prize. Read her bio here. \n\n\n\nAbout Marcela Guerrero\n\n\n\nGuerrero is the DeMartini Family Curator at The Whitney Museum of American Art. She has worked at the Whitney for nearly six years and was the Museum’s first curator to specialize in Latinx art. She currently serves as the Jennifer Rubio Associate Curator and has curated landmark exhibitions including no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria. That show\, on view at the Museum through April 23\, explores the impact of the devastating storm on contemporary Puerto Rican art. This powerful and renowned exhibition is the first survey of Puerto Rican art at a major U.S. art museum in fifty years. Guerrero was also part of the curatorial team that organized Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art\, 1925–1945 at the Whitney in 2020\, and curated Pacha\, Llaqta\, Wasichay: Indigenous Space\, Modern Architecture\, a 2018 exhibition that featured the work of seven emerging Latinx artists. This summer\, Guerrero will co-curate an exhibition of artist Ilana Savdie’s latest work\, including paintings and drawings\, as well as new works produced for the Whitney. Photo by Yasunori Matsui \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nBorn in Lahore\, Pakistan\, in 1969\, Shahzia Sikander took up the traditional practice of miniature painting during Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq’s military regime\, at a time when the medium was deeply unpopular among young artists. Sikander earned a B.F.A. in 1991 from the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore\, where she received rigorous training from master miniaturist Bashir Ahmad. She became the first woman to teach in the Miniature Painting Department at NCA\, alongside Ahmad\, and was the first artist from the department to challenge the medium’s technical and aesthetic framework. Sikander’s breakthrough work\, The Scroll\, 1989–90\, received national critical acclaim in Pakistan\, winning the prestigious Shakir Ali Award\, the NCA’s highest merit award\, and the Haji Sharif award for excellence in miniature painting\, subsequently launching the medium into the forefront of NCA’s program\, which brought international recognition to this medium within contemporary art practices. The artist moved to the United States to pursue an M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 1995; from 1995 to 1997\, she participated in the CORE Program of the Glassell School of Art at The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curator\n\n\n\n\nBrooke Kamin Rapaport is deputy director and Martin Friedman chief curator at New York’s Madison Square Park Conservancy\, which she joined in 2013. She was commissioner and curator of the 2019 United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale with the exhibition Martin Puryear: Liberty/Liberta. A major catalogue published by Gregory R. Miller accompanied the Venice exhibition. At Madison Square Park Conservancy\, she is responsible for the outdoor public sculpture program of commissioned work by contemporary artists including Diana AI-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Teresita Fernandez\, Maya Lin\, Josiah McElheny\, Martin Puryear\, Erwin Redl\, Arlene Shechet\, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. She is the founder of Public Art Consortium\, a national initiative of museum\, public art\, and sculpture park colleagues launched in 2017. Rapaport was a curator of contemporary art at the Brooklyn Museum and a guest curator at The Jewish Museum. She sits on the boards of three artist-endowed foundations and the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College.

DESCRIPTION:See below to register for either the 4:00 PM or the 5:00 PM tour group. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Laura Phipps\, Assistant Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, with Caitlin Chaisson\, Curatorial Project Assistant\, for a tour of the first New York retrospective of groundbreaking artist\, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (b. 1940\, citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation). Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map brings together nearly five decades of Smith’s drawings\, prints\, paintings\, and sculptures in the largest and most comprehensive showing of her career to date. \n\n\n\nSmith’s work engages with contemporary modes of making\, from her idiosyncratic adoption of abstraction to her reflections on American Pop art and neo-expressionism. These artistic traditions are incorporated and reimagined with concepts rooted in Smith’s own cultural practice\, reflecting her belief that her “life’s work involves examining contemporary life in America and interpreting it through Native ideology.” Employing satire and humor\, Smith’s art tells stories that flip commonly held conceptions of historical narratives and illuminate absurdities in the formation of dominant culture. Smith’s approach importantly blurs categories and questions why certain visual languages attain recognition\, historical privilege\, and value.  Across decades and mediums\, Smith has deployed and reappropriated ideas of mapping\, history\, and environmentalism while incorporating personal and collective memories. She has been at the Whitney since the summer of 2009\, and her recent projects include Virginia Overton: Sculpture Gardens\, Open Plan: Andrea Fraser and a group show of emerging artists Flatlands. She has also co-curated a project with Michele Abeles and the permanent collection exhibition Test Pattern. Laura has assisted with numerous museum exhibitions including 2010\, the Whitney Biennial\, Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection\, Glenn Ligon: AMERICA\, Singular Visions\, Wade Guyton OS\, Sinister Pop\, and Jeff Koons: A Retrospective. \n\n\n\n\nShe has served on the grant selection committee of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation\, as a visiting critic for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace and Smackmellon Studio Program\, and as a guest curator at the Kentler Drawing Center\, Brooklyn. Prior to the Whitney\, Phipps worked in the curatorial department and director’s office of the Modern Art Museum\, Fort Worth. She received her MA\, Art History at Hunter College\, CUNY and BFA\, Studio Art and BS\, Psychology from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth\, Texas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Chaisson is curator and critic based in New York\, and holds an MA in Curatorial Studies from Bard College. She currently works at the Whitney Museum of American Art. \n\n\n\nFrom 2016–2019\, she served as the Director and Curator of Far Afield\, an initiative that supports regionally-connected artistic and curatorial practices. DESCRIPTION:Please note the new tour date! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin International Center of Photography (ICP)’s stefa marin alarcon for a tour of Face to Face: Portraits of Artists by Tacita Dean\, Brigitte Lacombe and Catherine Opie. Organized by renowned writer and curator Helen Molesworth\, Face to Face features more than 50 photographs by Brigitte Lacombe and Catherine Opie\, and two films by Tacita Dean\, with bracing\, intimate\, and resonant portraits of compelling cultural figures including Maya Angelou\, Richard Avedon\, Louise Bourgeois\, Joan Didion\, David Hockney\, Miranda July\, Rick Owens\, Martin Scorsese\, Patti Smith\, Mickalene Thomas\, Kara Walker\, and John Waters.After the tour\, you will be led to the Between Friends exhibit to walk through at your own pace. This exhibit includes portraits of and by well-known figures like Alfred Stieglitz\, Berenice Abbott\, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Between Friends also calls attention to many women photographers from ICP’s collection\, including Lotte Jacobi\, Nell Dorr\, Consuelo Kanaga\, and Barbara Morgan.Optional post-tour activities:• At 6:00 PM\, Late Night ICP is hosting a free book event in the Library to celebrate the launch of ”A Humanist Vision: The Naomi Rosenblum Family Collection.” This publication honors the trailblazing legacy in photography and scholarship created by historian Naomi Rosenblum. SUMMARY:National | NADA Panel | Building Networks of Opportunity for Women-Identifying & Non-Binary Arts Professionals
DESCRIPTION:ArtTable is delighted to join New Art Dealers Alliance for their “NADA Presents” series. This panel will explore how the arts community can better support women-identifying and non-binary arts professionals through mentorship\, visibility\, and resource sharing. Jessica Porter (Lila Harnett Executive Director of ArtTable) will speak with HC Huỳnh (Deputy Director of The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts)\, Carolyn Ramo (Executive Director Artadia)\, and Victoria Rogers (Founder of Black Trustee Alliance for Art Museums) about the benefits of these types of programs\, and their experiences in creating positive change through active support systems in the art world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNADA Presents takes place at 535 West 22nd Street\, 4th Floor. All programs are free and open to the public. Capacity is limited\, and guests will be seated on a first come first served basis.  \n\n\n\nNADA New York and NADA Presents are both wheelchair accessible.
