Stir all ingredients except bitters in a glass pitcher. Pour over your ice cube. Put in 3-4 dashes of bitters after the mix is in the glass (do not put these on the cube\, but around the edges). Please email programs@arttable.org if you require additional accommodations.  \n\nAbout the Speakers\nOwner and chef Christa Csoka’s love for entertaining and passion for food began when she was a child\, helping her mother host dinners and events for officers and cadets at West Point. \nCsoka has over 30 years’ experience in the service industry\, including working as a chef at French restaurants in NYC and Chicago and catering in Austin\, New York\, and Charlotte. She has lived in and visited many cities all over the world\, all of which have given her a diverse culinary perspective and palate. After graduating from the French Culinary Institute in New York\, Christa moved to Charlotte in 2003 to be closer to family. Although she was not immediately immersed in the culinary world of Charlotte\, she kept her love of cooking alive by catering on weekends and special events as well as hosting many themed parties and events over the years. This would launch the idea of the Artisan’s Palate. The inclusion of art as part of a whole experience was always her passion and she envisioned a space in which food\, drinks\, music and art co-existed in harmony – and that is how The Artisan’s Palate came to be. \nMelissa Herriott is a Charlotte-based abstract artist and interior stylist working in multiple mediums. This exhibition is a synthesis of a multi-year\, intergenerational\, and cross-country exchange between New York-based Adams and Seattle-based Thomas that began after the two artists exhibited work alongside each other in a group show at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2017. For this exhibition\, Thomas draws upon the role of media and fairytales in shaping social expectations and her own conception of self. While this new regime has promised to honor Afghanistan’s cultural heritage\, history makes us skeptical. \nOne woman who has spent many years living and traveling throughout Afghanistan\, overseeing the preservation of its archaeological sites\, artifacts\, monuments\, and museums\, is Laura Tedesco\, Cultural Heritage Program Manager at the U.S. Department of State. As a cultural heritage and preservation specialist\, Laura has experienced firsthand the challenges of preserving art and heritage amidst conflict\, an experience she shares with Anna Bottinelli\, President of the Monuments Men Foundation. Tedesco serves as the Cultural Heritage Program Manager for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. Laura’s work is centered on supporting U.S. Embassies across the region in identifying and guiding cultural preservation projects supported by the Department of State. In 2021 there are more than 30 active projects that preserve intangible and built heritage of more than 12 nations. Now based in Washington\, D.C. and Charleston\, S.C.\, she previously worked in Afghanistan at the U.S. Embassy from 2010-2012 developing and overseeing the State Department’s large-scale initiatives to support the preservation of Afghanistan’s imperiled cultural patrimony. Prior to joining the Department of State\, Laura worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for 13 years. She has also worked in the private sector field of cultural resources management\, managing archaeological recovery of cultural resources for land development and corporate investment programs. Tedesco has participated in archaeological excavations in Syria\, Palestine\, the Republics of Armenia and Georgia\, Italy\, Cyprus\, and in several locations across the United States. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from New York University. Laura has a popular podcast that focuses on her personal story of the challenges she’s faced as a woman carrying out heritage preservation programs in Afghanistan. The title of the podcast is Monuments Woman. \nBorn and raised in Florence\, Italy\, Anna Bottinelli earned her B.A. in History of Art from John Cabot University (JCU) in Rome\, graduating Magna Cum Laude. There\, she was also the recipient of numerous accolades including the 2010 JCU Excellence in Art History Award and JCU Leadership Award. In 2011\, she received her M.A. in Art History at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She specialized in the Franciscan and Dominican Art of 13th century Italy. At the same time\, Ms. Bottinelli began work as the lead Italian research assistant to #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Robert Edsel on his project to write about the Monuments Men and their preservation work in Italy during World War II. Her work contributed greatly to the success of Mr. Edsel’s acclaimed bestseller\, “Saving Italy: The Race to Save a Nation’s Treasure from the Nazi.” \nIn 2014\, Ms. Bottinelli accepted a full time research position with the Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art\, in Dallas\, Texas. By 2017\, she had advanced to senior leadership positions and in December 2019\, she was appointed as the Foundation’s new President\, succeeding its founder\, Mr. Edsel . During her tenure at the Foundation\, Ms. Bottinelli has overseen numerous restitutions of cultural objects to individuals and museums in Europe. She has also served as a consultant for “Hunting Nazi Treasure\,” an eight-part investigative documentary that continues to air on Discovery’s American Heroes Channel\, History Channel-Canada\, and Canale Focus in Italy\, with additional future broadcasts planned internationally. \nToday Ms. Bottinelli is considered an expert on the subject of art looting and recovery during World War II. She regularly is a point of contact for provenance attorneys seeking expert opinions on art restitution cases involving Italy. Ms. Bottinelli has close ties with the art restitution unit of the Italian Carabinieri\, who have been steadfast supporters of the Monuments Men Foundation and its mission. Anna Bottinelli is currently based in Dallas with her husband and two little boys. She continued her studies at The Institute of Fine Arts at NYU\, NYC. Stein has written extensively in articles and books on many art subjects including Cubism\, Modern Illustrated Books\, and Photography. She is the first American scholar to study 19th century photography in Iran. Stein has also received awards for her meticulous scholarship. She recently retired as Deputy Director at the Wende Museum of the Cold War in Los Angeles. \nDorothy Goldeen is an art advisor and former gallery owner. Between 2014-2020\, Dorothy was honored to serve as the President of Stone Art LLC and Allan Stone Projects in New York\, the exclusive representative of the Allan Stone Collection\, one of the largest private art collections ever amassed by an individual. Dorothy presided over the sale of an unprecedented number of artworks\, through exhibitions at Allan Stone Projects\, to private collectors\, institutions\, and at auction. In 2021\, Dorothy relaunched Dorothy Goldeen Art Advisory\, which she had initiated in Los Angeles in 1996. Prior to that\, she owned and operated Dorothy Goldeen Gallery in Santa Monica. The gallery represented artists such as Nam June Paik and Magdalena Abakanowicz\, gave early shows to international and trailblazing artists\, such as Beatriz Milhazes\, Diana Thater\, Charles Gaines\, and David Wojnarowicz. Dorothy currently lives and works in New York. She has served on ArtTable’s Board of Directors and was the founding Chair of the Chapter Leadership Forum\, as well as serving twice as the Chair of the Southern California Chapter in Los Angeles. This series continues to ask: whose stories are we telling and who is telling them?\n\nJoin us for a discussion with artists Malynn Foster (Coast Salish of Squaxin Island) and Erin Genia (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate)\, as well as attorney Shannon O’Loughlin (Citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma). Her work in these areas focuses on amplifying the under-recognized presence of native peoples in the arts\, sciences\, and the public arena. Erin earned an M.S. in Art\, Culture\, and Technology from MIT and an M.P.A. in Tribal Governance from Evergreen State College. She also studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts. In recent years\, her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at Boston’s Urbano Project\, the Venice Biennale\, Ars Electronica\, The Museum of Northwest Art\, and the International Space Station. Public commissions have come from the Tufts University Art Galleries\, the Minnesota Historical Society\, the City of St. Paul\, and the City of Seattle. Also in the public realm\, Erin was named artist-in-residence with the City of Boston (2020-2021) and co-founded\, “Centering Justice: Indigenous Artists’ Perspectives on Public Art\,” with the New England Foundation for the Arts’ Public Art Team.\n\nShannon O’Loughlin is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma\, and the Chief Executive and Attorney for the oldest non-profit serving Indian Country – the Association on American Indian Affairs. Throughout its 99-year history\, the Association has provided national advocacy on watershed issues that support sovereignty and culture\, while working at a grassroots level with Tribes. The Association’s vision is to create a world where diverse Native American cultures and values are lived\, protected and respected.\n\n\n\nShannon has been practicing law for more than 20 years and is a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University. In 2013\, she was appointed by Secretary of the Department of the Interior to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Review Committee. In 2015 she was appointed by President Barack Obama as the first Native American to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee within the State Department. Shannon received a B.A. in American Indian Studies from California State University\, Long Beach. She then received joint M.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Arizona in Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy.\n\nMalynn Wilbur-Foster is a Squaxin Island tribal member\, raised among her people near the Skokomish and Squaxin Island reservations where she has lived most of her life. She works in a variety of media \, including weaving\, painting\, jewelry\, and carving both stone and wood. Malynn is always looking for new ways to tell the stories of her people fusing tradition and technology.\n\nSince 1998\, her work has been shown in galleries and featured in\n\n\n\nbooks. It has also entered collections of the Seattle Art Museum\, Burke Museum\, and Washington State History Museum. Additionally she has collaborated on a number of commissioned works in the Seattle area\, with family members and friends. 2020 brought a significant new commission: Malynn is now collaborating with Tamela LaClair and Kimberly Deriana\, as a team\, known as the MTK Matriarchs.\n\nThey have been selected as the artists for the Salish Steps\, part of the Seattle project re-imagining the city’s waterfront. Representing both local tribes and Urban Natives\, they are working with the design team\, developing a permanent artwork to elevate the importance of indigenous culture and history to this very public site. All programs are non-refundable. \n\nAbout the artists\nNancy Buchanan (b. 1946\, Boston) is an artist whose work has been shown in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art\, the New Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles\, the Centre Pompidou\, the Getty Research Institute\, and was included in four of the Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time exhibitions. She was the subject of a solo screening of her videotapes at REDCAT in 2013\, and her videos have been included in group exhibitions including Agitprop at the Brooklyn Museum; RE-ACTION\, a traveling exhibition originating in Spain; and Jonny at Insitu\, Berlin. Buchanan is the recipient of four National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist grants\, a COLA grant\, and a Rockefeller Fellowship in New Media. In 2016\, she organized It’s Your Party\, a durational performance at UC Irvine’s xMPL Theater as the second event in The Art of Performance. Beginning with her participation as a founding member of F Space Gallery in Costa Mesa\, Buchanan has been involved in numerous artists’ groups including The Los Angeles Woman’s Building and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE); she has also acted as curator for several exhibitions and projects. Her astounding love for color and special attention to detail\, as influenced by her culture\, have always been prominent throughout her artistic journey. She enjoys working in mixed media\, embroidery\, textiles\, and paint\, exploring both large-scale mural work and small-scale intimate pieces. Through her practice\, she produces thought-provoking artwork that comments on social and environmental injustice\, strongly advocating for the protection of women and girls of color. These are often topics that as a society\, we feel uncomfortable addressing but are necessary to view head on for a positive change. \nSince graduating from the University of Tampa in May 2020\, Jones’ work has caught the eyes of art directors in top publications like TIME\, where she was commissioned to produce the hand embroidered flag that appears on the August 31st/September 7th 2020 issue. She was also commissioned by the Washington Post to capture the history made by Vice President Kamala Harris and even appeared as a keynote speaker for Adobe MAX; emphasizing the importance of art as a vehicle for activism. \nJones’ unique hand embroidery work has been featured in Colossal magazine\, The Jealous Curator blog\, The American Craft Council\, Embroidery Mag UK\, and Domestika. Fearing for their lives\, many artists have been forced to go into hiding\, self-censor or destroy  their creative work\, or flee the country\, putting the future of the arts and culture in the country into question.  \n\n\n\nBefore Silence presents a powerful selection of works representative of the up and coming generation of Afghan artists who have continued to create and inspire amidst insecurity and humanitarian suffering. Through photographs\, paintings\, cartoons\, murals\, and performances\, this powerful exhibition offers a complex dialogue between artists\, danger\, deprivation\, and insecurity. The artists featured in the exhibition are Ali Rahimi\, ArtLords\, Latifa Zafar Attaii\, Lida Afghan\, Mohsin Taasha\, Morteza Herati\, Naseer Turkmani\, Rada Akbar\, and Shamayel Shalizi. It was a monumental task to pull together this exhibition with the artists scattered throughout the world after fleeing Afghanistan in recent months. Click here to view our cancellation policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speakers\n\n\nRada Akbar\, born and raised in Afghanistan\, is an activist and artist who uses her art to speak out against misogyny and oppression. Her work consists of a mixture of wearable monuments\, performance\, photography and installation pieces. It has been displayed in numerous national and international exhibitions. In 2015\, she received an honorable mention in the UNICEF Photo of the Year Award. In 2020\, her art exhibit called Abarzanan—Superwomen—which celebrates pioneering Afghan women\, was featured in the New York Times\, and in 2021 she received the Prince Claus Seed Award\, MujerHoy awards and BBC 100 Women. \n  \nBarbara Pollack is the co-founder of Art at a Time Like This Inc.\, a platform for free expression for artists at times of crises. An independent curator and writer\, Pollack will be lead curator for the exhibition\, Mirror Image: A Transformation of Chinese Identity\, opening at the Asia Society Museum in June. In 2021\, she organized Lu Yang: DOKU—Digital Alaya at Jane Lombard Gallery. Since 1994\,  Pollack has written extensively for  a broad range of arts publications and catalogues and monographs and is also a professor at the School of Visual Arts.  \n  \nJulie Trébault is the director of the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC)\, a project of PEN America. ARC safeguards the right to artistic freedom by connecting threatened artists to support\, building a global network of resources for artists at risk\, and forging ties between arts and human rights organizations. She has nearly two decades of experience in international arts programming and network-building\, including at the Museum of the City of New York\, the Center for Architecture\, the National Museum of Ethnology in The Netherlands\, and the Musée du quai Branly in Paris. Trébault holds a Master’s Degree in Arts Management from Sorbonne University\, a Master’s Degree in Archeology and Cultural Heritage from the University of Strasbourg\, and taught at Fordham University. She is co-author of Freedom of Artistic Expression Through the Lens of the Sustainable Development Goals (Springer\, 2021) and A Safety Guide for Artists (ARC\, 2021)\, and has been instrumental in the creation of numerous reports on the state of artistic freedom of expression. These include but are not limited to Arresting Art: Repression\, Censorship\, and Artistic Freedom in Asia and Art under Pressure: Decree 349 Restricts Creative Freedom in Cuba. Julie and ARC have also been featured in numerous media outlets such as Hyperallergic\, The Art Newspaper\, Artnet\, BBC News\, The Financial Times\, Al Jazeera\, Diario de Cuba\, NPR\, among others. \nAnne Verhallen is the co-founder of Art At A Time Like This\, launched in 2020 in response to the global health crisis. The non-profit arts organization supports artists working in response to crisis and current events by presenting their work online and in the public space. \nVerhallen is also an agent for visual artists and is currently the director of partnership at 291 Agency. She has worked on projects for many leading artists\, including Kehinde Wiley\, Robert Wilson\, Friedrich Kunath\, DRIFT\, and Lily Kwong.  In this capacity\, Verhallen has overseen large-scale activations and installations in collaboration with brands in the luxury industry.
