SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Curator-Led Tour of "Anonymous Was a Woman: The First 25 Years" at NYU's Grey Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Anonymous Was A Woman: The First 25 Years at the Grey Art Museum at New York University\, led by exhibition co-curators Nancy Princenthal and Dr. Vesela Sretenović. \n\n\n\nIn 1996\, artist and philanthropist Susan Unterberg founded the Anonymous Was A Woman (AWAW) award\, making a simple\, yet radical commitment to redress the lack of institutional support for women visual artists over the age of 40. She sought to provide mid-career artists with the means to procure workspace\, art supplies\, childcare\, or whatever else they needed to further their artistic careers. For the past two and a half decades\, AWAW has provided unrestricted grants of $25\,000 to ten or more artists each year. \n\n\n\nShowcasing some 50 artworks by 41 of the 251 award recipients from AWAW’s first 25 years (1996 through 2020)\, this exhibition explores several themes surrounding anonymity and\, ultimately\, celebrates the transformative impact women artists have made on contemporary art since the award’s founding. With each year represented by at least one artist\, the exhibition includes works created within a few years of their grant\, demonstrating the significance of the award to the artist’s growth. The range of artists featured in the exhibition demonstrates the demographic and aesthetic diversity of past awardees. All 251 artists are represented in a publication accompanying the exhibition\, which also includes critical essays about the awardees by Princenthal\, Sretenović\, and other women scholars. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the landmark exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\nVisitor Notes: \n\n\n\n\nThe Grey is fully walker- and wheelchair-accessible\, and several portable stools are available to borrow for use within the galleries upon request.\n\n\n\nPlease note that large bags and backpacks must be checked in a secure locker\, and food & drink (including water bottles) are not permitted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\n\n\nAll registrants for this event will be provided with a 20% discount on ArtTable’s limited edition scarf celebrating 25 Years of Anonymous Was a Woman\, created in 2021 in conjunction with ArtTable’s 45 year anniversary and the year Susan Unterberg received the Distinguished Service to the Visual Arts Award. Made of 100% silk habotai\, only a handful of scarves remain in our inventory! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nAll program registration fees go toward event expenses and administrative costs for the organization. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curators \n\n\n\nNancy Princenthal is a Brooklyn-based writer whose book Agnes Martin: Her Life and Art (2015) received the 2016 PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography. She is also the author of Hannah Wilke (2010) and Unspeakable Acts: Women\, Art\, and Sexual Violence in the 1970s (2019)\, and co-author of Mothers of Invention: The Feminist Roots of Contemporary Art (2024). Princenthal has taught at Bard\, Princeton\, Yale\, the School of Visual Arts\, NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts\, and elsewhere. \n\n\n\nDr. Vesela Sretenović has been a long-time curator of modern and contemporary art with special interest in cross-disciplinary art practices and in bridging theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. Most recently (2009-23) she served as Director of Contemporary Art Initiatives and Academic Affairs at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC. During her tenure\, she had organized Intersections\, a series of ongoing contemporary art projects\, as well as monographic exhibitions of prominent artists including Robert Ryman\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Antony Gormley\, and the first museum retrospective of Cuban artist Zilia Sanchez. Additionally\, she oversaw academic partnership initiatives with the University of Maryland (UMD) and the University of Virginia (UVA). Prior to The Phillips\, Sretenović worked at Brown University\, the University at Buffalo SUNY\, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She is a frequent visiting faculty\, teaching modern and contemporary art history and theory\, and works as an independent curator. Sretenović holds a BA in Art History from University of Belgrade\, Former Yugoslavia\, an MA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and a PhD in Humanities from Syracuse University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage credits:Judy Pfaff\, Ram’s Delhi\, 2012. SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist" at the National Gallery of Art
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist at the National Gallery of Art\, led by Dr. Lynn K. Matheny\, Deputy Head of Interpretation and Curator of Special Projects. \n\n\n\nThis retrospective exhibition showcases the enduring legacy of Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012) as a visionary artist and an unwavering activist. As the most comprehensive presentation devoted to Catlett in the United States\, it features more than 150 works\, including well-known sculpture and prints\, rare paintings and drawings\, and important ephemera. The exhibition is co-organized by the Brooklyn Museum and the National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, and presented in collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago. \n\n\n\nOne of the defining artists of the 20th century\, Elizabeth Catlett addressed the injustices she witnessed and experienced through her bold prints and dynamic sculptures. In striving to make art for the people—from her roots in Washington\, DC\, Chicago\, and New York to the remarkable body of work she made during some 60 years in Mexico—Catlett put social justice at the very center of her work. An avowed feminist\, lifelong activist\, and deft formalist\, Catlett passionately addressed injustices such as class inequality\, racial violence\, and U.S. expansionism through her politically engaged art\, injustices which continue to shape the world today. \n\n\n\n\n\n“I have been\, and am currently\, and always hope to be a Black Revolutionary Artist and all that it implies.”– Elizabeth Catlett\, 1970 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the exhibition and this visionary artist-activist. \n\n\n\nPlease review the National Gallery of Art’s accessibility page for available accommodations. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease note that ArtTable registration fees go toward administrative costs for the nonprofit organization. The National Gallery of Art does not charge an admission fee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lynn K. Matheny \n\n\n\n\nDr. Lynn K. Matheny currently serves as Deputy Head of Interpretation and Curator of Special Projects at the National Gallery of Art. SUMMARY:New York\, NY | ArtTable’s Art Law Series: Building and Managing a Fine Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third installment of ArtTable’s Art Law Series\, produced in partnership with Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP. In this conversation\, we will explore the various roles and responsibilities that are involved when building and managing an art collection. Coinciding with the Spring art fair season in New York\, a city whose contemporary art scene is constantly evolving\, this panel will focus on the professionals who help collectors navigate the collection- building and management process. What resources are available to guide collectors when purchasing artworks? How should a collector care for the art once it is in their collection? What are the responsibilities when owning fine art that new collectors might not be aware of? We will hear from several arts professionals involved at the different stages of collection-building\, from the initial purchase to long-time care and conservation. \n\n\n\nThis conversation will build on topics explored in the first two conversations in this series: Responsible Transacting in the Art Market (held at Patterson Belknap’s New York office in April 2024) and From Purchase to Patronage: Stewarding Your Growing Collection (hosted at Untitled Art Miami Beach in December 2024\, with additional support from Private Client Select and SRI Fine Art Services). If you missed us in Miami Beach\, you can enjoy our December conversation courtesy of the Untitled Art Fairs Podcast! \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nModerator: Anne-Laure Allehaut\, Counsel\, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP\n\n\n\nSharon Chrust\, President\, Sharon Chrust & Associates\n\n\n\nMaura Kehoe Collins\, Principal\, Artiphile\n\n\n\nTanya Wells\, Owner\, TMSW Art Advisory\n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease note that ArtTable registration fees go toward administrative costs for the organization. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is hosted in partnership with and supported by Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnne-Laure Alléhaut is Counsel in Patterson Belknap’s Art and Museum Law practice. Anne-Laure started her career at Skadden Arps in M&A before serving as a Senior Vice President of Sotheby’s legal transactional team\, negotiating many of the auction house’s most complex and high value transactions while also overseeing Sotheby’s advisory\, appraisal and valuation departments. \n\n\n\nAnne-Laure brings 18 years of law firm and in-house experience to the art industry and draws on her broad and deep experience to advise her clients with speed and efficiency. SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Curator-Led Tour of "Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets" at the American Folk Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets at the American Folk Art Museum\, led by Valérie Rousseau\, PhD\, Curatorial Chair and Senior Curator of 20th-Century & Contemporary Art. \n\n\n\nFeaturing 42 textile works and oil paintings\, Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets is the first comprehensive survey of Santos Reinbolt’s art ever presented and marks the first-ever solo museum exhibition for the artist organized outside her native Brazil. Best known for her large-scale embroideries made from hundreds of vibrant colored threads\, which the artist referred to as quadros de lã (“wool paintings”)\, the exhibition represents more than half of all known works by the artist and examines the artist’s work through a variety of lenses\, including gender\, race\, and socio-economic dynamics. \n\n\n\nA Head Full of Planets explores the context in which Santos Reinbolt’s artistic practice crystallized in the early 1950s\, after she became a live-in cook for the architect Lota de Macedo Soares and her partner\, the American poet Elizabeth Bishop\, at their home in Petrópolis\, a mountain getaway favored by Brazilian high society. It was not until the mid-1960s\, while working in another household\, that she began to dedicate herself to embroidery and would begin creating many of the works for which she is best known today. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the exhibition and this mysterious yet extraordinary artist\, as well as a recent artnet article about the exhibition and Dr. Rousseau’s curatorial process. \n\n\n\nThe American Folk Art Museum is fully accessible. Gallery stools and wheelchairs are available upon request\, and an access ramp is available to enter the upper gallery if needed. SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Artist Studio Visit with Lex Marie
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to present a studio visit with Lex Marie in Washington\, DC! \n\n\n\nLex will walk guests through the large-scale works she has created over the past two years at her current studio before transitioning out in July. She will share her process\, the unconventional materials she often incorporates\, and how they help tell stories about Black childhood\, motherhood\, and social justice. Her work is heavily inspired by personal experiences\, community narratives\, and the resilience of marginalized voices. \n\n\n\nVisitors can expect a behind-the-scenes look at how her sculptures and mixed media works come together\, and insight into the themes that ground her practice. She will also preview a few upcoming projects that continue to explore these narratives in new ways. \n\n\n\nLex Marie (b. 1992: Prince Georges County\, MD) is a multidisciplinary artist who creates paintings\, sculptures and installations that reflect her individual experiences yet encompasses the experiences of many in the African diaspora. Marie’s artistic practice is as an exploration of the weighty realities experienced by many African American children and children of color. Her work is a testament to the profound impact of adultification biases\, food insecurity\, and the systemic challenges entrenched in American school systems\, healthcare systems\, in the home and out in the world. Through a fusion of everyday materials\, often reclaimed and repurposed\, Marie offers a tangible manifestation of the intangible struggles faced by these young minds\, compelling viewers to confront the profound significance inherent in the seemingly ordinary. \n\n\n\nMarie holds a BA in studio art with a concentration in painting from the University of Maryland\, College Park. Marie’s most recent solo exhibition “LetThem Kids Be Kids” opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (2022). Marie’s work has been curated into group exhibitions including REVISIT/REIMAGINE (Banneker-Douglas Museum\, 2024)\, In Tender Peaks\, Grace Unfolds (Mitochondria Gallery\, 2024)\, A Color Story (Cierra Britton Gallery\, 2024)\, and Stories From My Childhood (Northern Illinois University Art Museum\, 2022). Marie received the Washingtinton Studio Award from S&R Evermay in 2023 and currently works in Washington\, DC \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guest – $20\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:New York\, NY | After Hours Reception and Tour of "Amy Sherald: American Sublime" at the Whitney Museum
DESCRIPTION:ArtTable invites you to a special evening at the Whitney Museum of American Art! \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an after hours reception in the Whitney’s Trustee Room\, which features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hudson and the High Line. The reception will include wine and light bites. \n\n\n\nAfter the reception\, join us for a guided tour of Amy Sherald: American Sublime and Louise Nevelson’s Collection View. \n\n\n\nAmy Sherald is a storyteller. She creates precisely crafted narratives of American life\, selecting\, styling\, and photographing her sitters as the foundation for her nuanced paintings. Thus\, while Sherald (b. 1973; Columbus\, Georgia) bases her works on specific people\, they are more than traditional portraits. They center everyday Black Americans\, compelling in their individuality and extraordinary in their ordinariness\, inviting viewers to step into Sherald’s imagined worlds. In this exhibition\, paintings of such ordinary Americans join her iconic portraits of First Lady Michelle Obama and\, heartbreakingly\, Breonna Taylor\, to produce a resonant ode to the multiplicity and complexity of American identity.  \n\n\n\nLouis Nevelson had a long and deep relationship with the Whitney Museum\, which organized her first retrospective in 1967. Today the Museum is one of the largest repositories of her work\, with over ninety sculptures\, drawings\, and prints in the collection\, many of them gifts of the artist. The works gathered in this exhibition\, which span four decades\, offer a special opportunity to shine a light on this self-proclaimed “architect of shadows.” \n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Member – $35\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guest – $40\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Artist Talk and Studio Visit with Francine Tint
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable on June 16th for a studio visit with Francine Tint! \n\n\n\nFrancine Tint’s practice is rooted in the exploration of color as a means of capturing and embodying light. Tint’s approach emerged within painterly abstraction\, bridging Color Field influences with the dynamic gestures of Abstract Expressionism. While grounded in this tradition\, she continually expands its boundaries\, exploring new forms of expression that challenge conventional abstract frameworks. David Ebony observes that Tint rejects rigid formalism in favor of an intuitive method\, balancing energetic movement with moments of stillness. This interplay creates what he describes as a ‘Zen feeling’—a sense of clarity and resolution within complex visual structures. Over five decades\, Tint has remained committed to discovery and reinvention. While sharing affinities with peers such as Larry Poons\, her synthesis of gesture and color distinguishes her vision. Her work is held in the permanent collections of 30 museums\, including the Neuberger Museum of Art\, the El Paso Museum of Art\, and the Chazen Museum of Art. Tint’s paintings are exhibited across the United States and Europe\, further solidifying her influence in the field of contemporary abstraction. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guest – $20\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? She founded The Silk Screen Project at St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery\, amplifying marginalized voices through collective creative production. SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest" with Adrienne L. Childs
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to present a Curator-Led Tour of Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest at the Phillips Collection with Adrienne L. Childs! \n\n\n\nDrawing upon previously unknown works and archival findings\, this exhibition recovers the depth and variety of the more than three-decade career of Vivian Browne (b. 1929\, Laurel\, FL; d. 1993\, New York\, NY). The exhibition features paintings\, prints\, and works on paper across seven bodies of work\, as well as ephemera that highlight Browne’s pioneering activism and influential teaching career. Browne was a founder of the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition\, an organization that fought for Black representation in New York museums; a founder of SoHo20\, one of the first women’s art cooperatives in Manhattan; and a professor at Rutgers University (1971–92). Her signature approach to color and form challenged the neatly defined categories of abstraction and figuration\, and art and politics\, revealing a more nuanced approach to art-making that is part of Browne’s unique contribution to 20th-century art of the US. \n\n\n\nAdrienne L. Childs is an independent scholar\, art historian\, and curator. She is Senior Consulting Curator at The Phillips Collection. Her current book is an exploration of Black figures in European decorative arts entitled Ornamental Blackness: The Black Figure in European Decorative Arts\, publshed by Yale University Press. She is currently co-curator of Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest for The Phillips Collection. She recently co-curated The Colour of Anxiety: Race\, Sexuality and Disorder in Victorian Sculpture at The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds\, England. She was the guest curator of Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC\, 2020. \n\n\n\nIn April 2022 The High Museum of Art awarded Childs the 2022 Driskell Prize in recognition of her contribution to African American art and art history. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable AND Phillips Collection Members – $20 (You must be a member of both ArtTable and the Phillips to receive this price.
