Solo exhibitions highlight the rich way in which artists respond to the materials\, forces\, and questions of the day. Focused group exhibitions explore significant movements\, themes\, and ideas that continue to influence and define our culture. The historic works handled by the gallery over the past thirty years are broad-ranging and can often be defined by their rarity and significance.  \n\n\n\nIn 2006\, Peter Freeman partnered with Galerie Nelson to establish what would eventually become Peter Freeman\, Inc.\, Paris in 2013. The gallery\, both in New York and in Paris\, has always presented historically significant works in conversation with newer work by living artists. For this reason\, much of our business has been with museums. \n\n\n\nPeter Freeman also publishes scholarly books\, including a catalogue raisonné Robert Mangold: Early Works\, with text by Robert Storr; the first US catalogue on the works of Charlotte Posenenske; several catalogues on Medardo Rosso; James Ensor: Paintings\, with text by Xavier Tricot; the first monograph of Catherine Murphy\, with text by John Yau and Svetlana Alpers; a facsimile edition of Mangelos’s Pythagoras with an essay by Branka Stipančić; and the artist book Tide\, a collaboration with Silvia Bächli and the writer Jamaica Kincaid.

Marta Minujín Archive. © Marta Minujín\, courtesy of Henrique Faria\, New York andHerlitzka & Co.\, Buenos Aires\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable for an intimiate look at the first survey exhibition in the United States of Marta Minujín\, a defining force of Latin American art whose trajectory intersected with the major artistic developments of the postwar period while reflecting a singular spirit and vision infused by her sharp intellect\, irreverent humor\, and performative presence. Hosted by The Jewish Museum\, this tour will be led by Associate Curator\, Rebecca Shaykin. \n\n\n\nThis extensive exhibition includes nearly 100 works organized to reflect Minujín’s bold experimentation over six decades. She is co-curator of Marta Minujín: Arte! Arte! Arte! (2023\, with Darsie Alexander). In 2019\, she organized the critically-acclaimed Edith Halpert and the Rise of American Art; the accompanying catalogue was a New York Times Critic’s Pick and winner of the 2019 National Jewish Book Award (Visual Arts). Additional projects include: Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist (2016\, with Jens Hoffmann and Claudia J. Nahson)\, Helena Rubinstein: Beauty Is Power (2014\, with Mason Klein); and The Radical Camera: New York’s Photo League\, 1936-1951 (2011\, with Mason Klein and Catherine Evans). Shaykin has played a vital role in the museum’s acquisitions program\, bringing works by Candice Breitz\, Elinor Carucci\, Trenton Doyle Hancock\, Deborah Kass\, Kali Spitzer\, and Carrie Mae Weems into the collection. Previously\, Shaykin worked at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum\, where she assisted on Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists\, 1958–1968 (2010) and Kiki Smith: Sojourn (2010). She received her BA in Art History from Oberlin College and MA from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art.

Porter\, Lila Harnett Executive Director of ArtTable\, and Masha Turchinsky\, ArtTable Board Member and the Director of the Hudson River Museum\, at her historic Glenview home for a light reception.  \n\n\n\nAlyssa Alexander is a curator\, exhibitions manager\, and arts administrator based in Brooklyn. With a background in journalism and critical writing\, she is currently building a curatorial practice and pursuing more in-depth cultural and art-historical research that centers artists of African descent\, with a special focus on woman-identifying artists of the Caribbean. She is dedicated to working with emerging artists and institutions to cultivate a more accessible and equitable creative economy. \n\n\n\nKarintha Lowe\, PhD\, American Studies program at Harvard University\, is the Mellon Public Humanities Fellow at the Hudson River Museum and Sarah Lawrence College. She researches and writes about Asian American women’s experimental artmaking practices. Artists in the show include Olga de Amaral\, Denilson Baniwa\, Bruno Baptistelli\, Andrés Bedoya\, Wendy Cabrera Rubio\, Leda Catunda\, Chiriquí artist\, Coclé artists\, william cordova\, Juan Covelli\, Covens & Mortier\, Harmonia Rosales\, Tiago Sant’Ana\, Julia Santos Solomon\,  Moara Tupinambá\, Laura Vinci\, and Alberta Whittle. \n\n\n\nDuring the colonization of the Americas\, colonial fantasies of an Indigenous kingdom replete with gold and precious stones quickly permeated the European imagination\, galvanizing the invasion of the continent and serving as a justification for genocide as well as the destruction of ancestral territories and the environment. Born and raised in Buenos Aires\, she has lived in New York since 2011. Her Ph.D. in art history from Rutgers University\, titled “This Must Be the Place: Latin American Artists in New York 1965–1975\,” became a show at Americas Society in 2021. She completed her M.A. at The Institute of Fine Arts at New York University and her undergraduate studies in art history at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Her research received grants from the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Terra and Andrew W. Mellon Foundations\, and the ICAA Peter C. Marzio Award from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. Her writing has been presented at conferences internationally and published by prestigious museums and academic journals\, including the New Museum\, the Museum of Modern Art\, and the Guggenheim Museum. She curated exhibitions independently in museums and cultural centers and previously worked in the Modern and Contemporary Art Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art\, and Fundación Proa in Buenos Aires. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTie Jojima is an associate curator at Americas Society in New York and a PhD candidate in art history at the Graduate Center\, CUNY\, specializing in modern and contemporary Latin American art\, with a focus on Brazilian art. Her larger research interests encompass performance and media art in the 1970s and 1980s\, as well as contemporary Asian diasporic art practices in Latin America.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of “My Neighbor’s Garden” with artist Sheila Pepe on November 9 at Madison Square Park. Brooke Kamin Rapaport\, Artistic Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator\, will introduce the artist and her first outdoor exhibition. “My Neighbor’s Garden\,” places colorful and optimistic canopies of crocheted material\, as well as unexpected materials including paracord\, shoelaces\, outsize rubber bands\, and climbing vines\, and extends from the park’s extant physical structures such as light poles. In the months preceding the exhibition\, Pepe gathered novice and expert crocheters at her Brooklyn studio for crochet sessions towards the fabrication of the project. Pepe will speak about the project\, offer insights into the collaborative process\, as well as situating the exhibition within the context of her career as a whole. She was commissioner and curator of the 2019 United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale with the exhibition Martin Puryear: Liberty/Liberta. A major catalogue published by Gregory R. Miller accompanied the Venice exhibition. At Madison Square Park Conservancy\, she is responsible for the outdoor public sculpture program of commissioned work by contemporary artists including Diana AI-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Teresita Fernandez\, Maya Lin\, Josiah McElheny\, Martin Puryear\, Erwin Redl\, Arlene Shechet\, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. She is the founder of Public Art Consortium\, a national initiative of museum\, public art\, and sculpture park colleagues launched in 2017. Rapaport was a curator of contemporary art at the Brooklyn Museum and a guest curator at The Jewish Museum. DESCRIPTION:Canal Projects introduces “Lithium Sex Demons in the Factory\,” the inaugural New York solo show for Los Angeles artist Candice Lin. Our tour will be hosted by Artistic Director Summer Guthery. This project\, a collaborative effort between Canal Projects and the 14th Gwangju Biennale\, involves the recreation of a lithium battery factory as a site-specific installation. Through production\, exhibition\, research and interpretation of this work they foster artistic practices that challenge and reflect the current moment. \n\n\n\nCandice Lin has gained recognition for her innovative use of diverse materials: from tea and cactus tinctures to fungi and deceased bats—accentuating their unique characteristics\, such as scents and flavors. Lin repurposes presentation techniques commonly linked with anthropology and natural history\, investigating their colonial narratives. Patterson received her BFA in painting from Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston\, Jamaica in 2004. She received an MFA degree in 2006 in printmaking and drawing from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. \n\n\n\nPatterson has taught at the University of Virginia; Edna Manley College School of Visual and Performing Arts; has served as Associate Professor in Painting and Mixed Media at the University of Kentucky; and was the Bill and Stephanie Sick Distinguished Visiting Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has been featured in biennials worldwide including Liverpool (2021)\, Athens (2021)\, São Paulo (2016)\, and Havana (2015). DESCRIPTION:Welcome to ArtTable’s 2023 Annual Leadership Series panel discussion on Tuesday\, September 5 in New York City! “The Future of Gender Based Organizations” engages the arts and business communities in a critical examination of how organizations dedicated to addressing existing gender-based disparities in wages and opportunities can continue to research\, advocate\, network\, and address inequities—particularly as the culture moves forward into a more evolved understanding of gender identity. In the panel discussion\, we will consider the value and meaning of gender-based organizations\, their changing roles\, purposes\, and goals\, and the context and consequences of leading such organizations in a changing political and cultural moment. The program will continue to establish ArtTable as an advocate for equality within and beyond the art community. Our panel features: Alyssa Nitchun\, Executive Director of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art; Subha V. Barry\, President of Seramount; Alicin Williamson\, Chief Diversity and Culture Officer\, Yahoo!; and Jessica L. Porter\, Lila Harnett Executive Director of ArtTable. Sociologist Dr. Gillian Gualtieri will moderate this important discussion. Barry is a C-suite leader and an Advisor who brings a unique perspective on the alignment of corporate culture to talent strategy and business results. As a transformational change agent\, she has a proven record of identifying and accelerating new business creation\, driving sales\, and increasing profitability. She is president of Seramount\, now part of EAB. Seramount is a strategic professional services firm dedicated to advancing diversity\, equity and inclusion in the workplace. Here\, she drives the firm’s vision\, strategy\, and business development. \n\n\n\n\nPrior to Seramount\, Subha was SVP and Chief Diversity Officer at Freddie Mac\, where she served on the firm’s management committee and led their Foundation. During her 20+ years at Merrill Lynch\, Subha was a Managing Director and the company’s first Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion\, driving strategy\, infrastructure and execution with a lens on both global and local community.  \n\n\n\nShe has taught Gender Policy at Columbia University and speaks passionately about the ability to drive innovation by embracing diversity and creating a culture of inclusion. She serves on a number of boards aligned with her passions—education\, cancer research\, and women’s advancement. \n\n\n\nA native of India\, Subha holds a BA from Bombay University and an MBA and MS in Accounting from Rice University. She enjoys golfing\, reading poetry and rallying for social change. She has two grown children and lives in Naples\, Florida and New Hope\, PA with her husband.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlyssa Nitchun is Executive Director of The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (LLMA)\, where she oversees the Museum’s many initiatives and long-term growth. Alyssa was the first queer woman to be selected by the Board to lead LLMA and in her two years as Director\, she is already ushering the Museum into the future\, building a queer\, revelatory\, radically affirming art Museum\, that centers people and collective meaning making. Prior to her appointment at LLMA\, Alyssa had a career in cultural consulting and nonprofits\, spending time advising artists and cultural institutions on realizing thought-provoking projects in the Middle East and Europe. \n\n\n\n\nAlyssa also served as Acting Executive Director at the public art organization Creative Time\, where she spent nearly seven years working in development\, communications\, and team management. She previously oversaw Institutional Giving for the public media organization\, StoryCorps and was the Director of Development for the CUNY Graduate Center’s Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies. Alyssa has held multiple creative positions in the worlds of art\, fashion\, and music\, and received an MA in Gender Politics with a focus in Queer theory from New York University. In her current role at The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art\, Alyssa is expanding the Museum’s purpose beyond its position as an art museum\, into a hub for community and creative expression\, actively shaping a better future for LGBTQIA+ people with artists leading the way. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlicin Reidy Williamson is a global diversity and strategy executive. Her experience includes being a Managing Principal at strategic policy firm\, The Raben Group\, SVP of Public Affairs and Corporate Responsibility for MTV Networks and Viacom\, Chief Inclusion Officer at Endeavor and she now serves as Chief Diversity and Culture Officer at Yahoo!. In her current role\, Alicin leads global diversity and inclusion\, employee engagement and culture for the company. In her partnerships\, she’s developing the external relationships that will increase Yahoo’s diversity footprint as a thought leader in this space. Alicin currently sits as a board member of The Dalton School\, She Should Run\, March on Washington Film Festival and is an advisor for the Council on Juvenile and Family Court Judges and chairs a joint collaboration of veteran service organizations\, Hire Heroes and Operation Homefront. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJessica L. Porter is ArtTable’s Lila Harnett Executive Director. She joined ArtTable as the executive director in 2018\, after 4 years on the Board of Directors and 8 years of membership. Porter is responsible for developing the long-range strategy of ArtTable\, providing leadership and oversight in fundraising to meet financial goals\, and directing communications and brand management. In 2020\, she was the first to assume the name of ArtTable’s founder as the Lila Harnett Executive Director.  \n\n\n\n\nPrior to this role\, she was the Executive Director of the New York Artists Equity Association\, Inc (NYAEA)—a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1947. In 2001\, Porter launched Porter Advisory\, working as an independent curator\, creating exhibitions and advising artists on career advancement. From 2006 to 2017\, Porter founded and directed Porter Contemporary\, a Chelsea art gallery\, where she was responsible for strategy\, business development and market growth\, marketing\, communications\, and talent acquisition. Porter has spoken on CNBC about art collecting and investment in emerging artists\, to the Harvard Business Women’s Association about starting an art collection\, and has participated in panel discussions on topics including art and music\, women in the art industry\, art and social justice\, contemporary visions of Picasso and art collecting. Porter has served as part of the Leadership Advisory Board for the Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s annual Women of Distinction Fundraiser. She also enjoys coaching little league softball and supporting girls in sports. Porter has a Bachelor’s in Art History and French Language and Literature from the University of Delaware and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGillian Gualtieri\, PhD\, is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Barnard College\, where she teaches classes in the sociology of art\, race and ethnicity\, gender\, organizations\, and culture. Previously\, she was a postdoctoral scholar at the Curb Center for Art\, Enterprise and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University and a postdoctoral fellow at New York University. In 2018\, Gillian received her Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of California\, Berkeley.  Gillian has published research on symbolic compliance and sexual harassment on college campuses (in Sociological Forum)\, inequality in the art world (Poetics; SNAAP Report)\, and racial and gender inequality in fine dining (Social Problems; Poetics). DESCRIPTION:There’s still plenty of time to enjoy The Hamptons this summer! Join ArtTable at Exhibition The Barn—Frampton Co’s Fine Art space in Bridgehampton\, New York. “Women Choose Women” spans the 1950s to today\, including work by Lynne Drexler\, Elaine de Kooning\, Grace Hartigan\, Nanette Carter\, Elizabeth Osborne\, and Susan Vecsey. This exhibition is curated by Christine Berry and Martha Campbell\, co-founders of Berry Campbell\, and Elena Frampton\, principal of Frampton Co. Berry Campbell is known for bringing to light artists who were overlooked due to age\, race\, gender or geography\, particularly women of Abstract Expressionism. Frampton Co focuses on contemporary art and design with emphasis on promoting emerging and undiscovered mid-career artists. We’ll enjoy a tour of the exhibition with Christine Berry & Elena Frampton\, and then relax and network with a glass of Prosecco or seltzer\, courtesy of the gallery.The exhibition “Women Choose Women” derives its name and curatorial focus from a significant event  at the New York Cultural Center in 1973. Curated by Lucy Lippard and a committee of female artists\, this groundbreaking exhibition marked the first major display of women artists in New York. It left a profound impact not only within the art community but also in society at large. The 2023 exhibition\, bearing the same name\, follows in the footsteps of its predecessor\, embodying a collaborative and effective approach. The vision culminates with Exhibition The Barn; the Bridgehampton gallery where she curates an ever-changing display of notable and under-the-radar works and her own original furnishings\,F Collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristine Berry and Martha Campbell opened Berry Campbell in the heart of Chelsea in 2013. The gallery has a fine-tuned program representing artists of post-war American painting that have been overlooked or neglected\, particularly women of Abstract Expressionism. Since its inception\, the gallery has developed a strong emphasis in research to bring to light artists overlooked due to age\, race\, gender\, or geography. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable members and guests for a day of art\, walking\, and networking during Upstate Art Weekend this July! It’s a perfect time to take a break from the city and connect with colleagues. Please note that this is a walking tour. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start the day at Dia Beacon\, where Curator Alexis Lowry will guide us on a tour of “Rita McBride: Momentum.” McBride\, renowned for her extensive body of work encompassing architecture\, design\, and public space\, operates at the confluence of these disciplines. Her work predominantly revolves around creating expansive installations and large-scale works\, and includes elements of performance\, textual compositions\, and smaller sculptural pieces. You’ll have a little time to explore other exhibits at Dia before joining the group on a shuttle to downtown Beacon.We’ll enjoy a delicious (Dutch treat) lunch at a Main Street restaurant. Just a few minutes away on foot\, we’ll tour “Reclaimed\,” at Garage Gallery with Co-Founder Susan Keiser. The exhibit features work by Laura Petrovich-Cheney\, Jaynie Crimmins\, and Rinat Goren. “‘Women’s work’ is such a loaded term—loaded with seemingly impossible to dislodge assumptions about who does what in this world and what it’s worth. Said dismissively\, these two short words have the power to devalue the lives and work of half the population. Still. I AM THE PASSENGER is an intergenerational group exhibition of non-objective painting\, in two parts—acting as a looking glass for perceiving our current moment in time and place within the lineage of non-objective painting. We relate to non-objective painting in both corporeal and immaterial ways. Non-objective painting wants to stir something. Non-objective painting connects with our bodies. Severe yet playful\, non-objective painting is evidence of the artist operating within a greater movement of creation. We bear witness to the journey of artist as passenger when we stand in view of non-objective painting. Non-objective painting is about feeling and perceiving in the body\, it’s personal\, it’s universal. Organized by Trudy Benson\, Paola Oxoa\, and Russell Tyler. Lowry also oversees acquisitions and the permanent collection. At Dia Chelsea\, she has curated new projects by Lucy Raven\, Rita McBride\, and Kishio Suga. At Dia Beacon\, she organized the first North American retrospective of Charlotte Posenenske’s work\, as well as installations by Mel Bochner\, Mary Corse\, Charles Gaines\, Barry Le Va\, Lee Ufan\, Robert Morris\, Michelle Stuart\, and Anne Truitt.  \n\n\n\n\nPrior to joining Dia\, she was curator of the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University\, Providence\, and a freelance project manager for Creative Time\, New York. She has recently contributed to publications for Art Monthly\, the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College\, Orlando\, The Drawing Center\, New York\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, in addition to books produced by Dia. In 2021\, Lowry was the first invited curator-in-residence at the Bauhaus Foundation in Dessau\, Germany. She is on the board of directors for the Triple Aught Foundation and serves on the advisory council of The Great Northern\, Minneapolis. She received her PhD from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts in 2019. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaola Oxoa (b. 1979 Medellin\, Colombia) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in New York\, NY & Beacon\, NY. Oxoa earned a BFA in experimental animation from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design (Lakewood\, CO). Working across media—themes of interconnectedness and transcendence permeate her work. Solo exhibitions include What the Thunder Said at Matteawan Gallery (Beacon\, NY)\, Round Tripper at Stay Gallery (Denver\, CO)\, The Mirror of Reason (2005) and TRUE LOVE (2004) at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver\, where she was awarded a residency and named the #1 NEW PICK (2004-5). Her work has been featured in Two Coats of Paint\, NYLON\, Art in America\, Artillery Magazine\, Rocky Mountain News\, and The Denver Post\, among other publications. Oxoa’s work is in the permanent collection of The Bass Museum of Contemporary Art (Miami\, FL) and in prominent private collections.  \n\n\n\n\nOxoa founded Mother\, an artist-centered gallery\, in the spring of 2018 in Beacon\, NY. Oxoa has curated upwards of 25 solo\, two-person\, and group exhibitions at both gallery locations\, off-site\, and at significant art fairs including The Armory Show. Mother’s exhibitions have been featured or reviewed in publications including The New York Times\, Hyperallergic\, The Art Newspaper\, Two Coats of Paint\, Artnet\, The Brooklyn Rail\, and Whitewall. Oxoa was named one of six woman gallerists and curators defining the Hudson Valley art scene in 2019 by Chronogram Magazine. Oxoa serves on the board of the Children’s Museum of Arts in NYC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Keiser is a fine-art photographer and the cofounder of Garage Gallery\, a contemporary fine arts gallery in Beacon\, NY\, exhibiting significant bodies of work by emerging and mid-career artists in a wide range of media. “Art needs space in the real world—a home in the heart of the community that’s larger than a studio but less rarified than a global gallery showroom. Artists need a place where they can find their audience without economic pressure—a point of entry between a phone app and a collector’s wall. Collectors need an environment that is welcoming and invites discovery\, where they can always find a treasure to take home with them.” \n\n\n\n\nKeiser’s photographic and curatorial work reflects her long experience in publishing\, the arts\, and horticulture. As Senior Editor at Oxford University Press she was responsible for establishing their academic and scholarly journals program in the United States\, acquiring titles in fields ranging from cultural studies to financial economics and fine art to neuroscience.Deeply involved in gardening and the natural world\, she was Manager of the Rock and Native Plant Gardens at The New York Botanical Garden\, Bronx\, NY; Associate Director of the Garden Conservancy\, Garrison\, NY; and founder and principal of Greystone Gardens\, Inc.\, a design-build firm working with private and corporate clients. Her gardens have been featured in the New York Times and Garden Design magazine\, as well as in Japanese and German publications. \n\n\n\nAs an artist she has always been concerned with building large structures out of small units\, entire worlds out of miniature elements. The recipient of an NEA grant she created site-specific installations commissioned by public and private institutions\, including the Milwaukee Art Museum\, Milwaukee\, WI; Walker Art Center\, Minneapolis\, MN; Rockefeller Center\, New York\, NY; and the International Design Conference in Aspen\, CO. Keiser attended Pomona College and holds a BFA in painting from The Cooper Union and a diploma from The New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKatharine Overgaard is a Founding Partner at Analog Diary (Beacon)\, and Director at Franklin Parrasch Gallery (New York). Her expertise lies in art writing and research\, gallery and artist strategy\, and collector and institutional relations. In spring 2022\, she co-founded Analog Diary with fellow veteran art dealers Derek Eller\, Abby Messitte\, and Franklin Parrasch. \n\n\n\n\n\nAnalog Diary organizes exhibitions which reimagine what a gallery can show by collapsing boundaries and arbitrarily assigned categories. Analog Diary is a space where thinking about art without the mind clutter of an Instagrammable frame of reference is possible. Analog Diary is a Member of the New Art Dealers Alliance. \n\n\n\nOvergaard has been an ArtTable member since 2022\, was born and raised in Western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley. DESCRIPTION:LGDR is pleased to welcome ArtTable to Gego: Lines in Space. The exhibition is the first to present Gego’s work at the gallery’s new flagship on 19 East 64th St. A leading figure of Venezuelan abstraction in the 1960s and ’70s\, Gego (1912–1994) created multidimensional works that radically engage the properties of line and space. The tour will be led by LGDR Senior Partner\, Emilio Steinberger. Presented in collaboration with Fundación Gego\, Lines in Space will offer a concentrated survey of the artist’s works across media\, including the constellated wire structure Chorro (1979/86)\, the six-part steel-and-bronze sculpture Cornisa I (1967)\, and her luminous watercolors\, collages\, and drawings. \n\n\n\nThis presentation follows those organized by Lévy Gorvy in New York (2015) and London (2016)\, continuing a long-standing relationship with the artist’s estate. Lines in Space coincides with a major retrospective of the artist’s work on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York (March–September 2023)\, which traveled from Museo Jumex in Mexico City (October 2022–February 2023)\, and the Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo (2019–20)\, and will continue on to the Guggenheim Bilbao (October 2023–February 2024). The NAC Artist Fellowship program continues the Club’s over 120-year history of supporting the arts and artists.  \n\n\n\nJoAnne McFarland is a painter\, sculptor\, poet\, and the Artistic Director of the Artpoetica Project Space in Gowanus\, Brooklyn which exhibits works that focus on the intersection of language and visual representation. McFarland has artwork in the collections of The Library of Congress\, The Columbus Museum of Art\, The Department of State\, General Electric\, Ikon Corporation\, and AT&T Corporation among others. Recent shows include: “Best & Brightest” and “The Indivisible Spectrum\,” both at The Painting Center in New York City. She has also exhibited at June Kelly and A.I.R. Gallery\, among other venues. A graduate of Princeton University\, McFarland’s poetry collections include: Acid Rain\, 13 Ways of Looking at a Black Girl\, and Identifying the Body. Her latest multimedia collection\, Pullman\, will be published by Grid Books in 2023. McFarland has had fellowships at The BARD Graduate Center Library\, and KALA Art Institute. McFarland’s traveling project SALLY\, a collaboration with artist Sasha Chavchavadze\, explores the histories of women whose lives have been marginalized\, or forgotten. The National Arts Club (NAC) was founded in 1898\, admitting women on a full and equal basis from its inception. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable and Nohra Haime for a tour of “Us\, 172 Years Later” by Ruby Rumié at the Nohra Haime Gallery. The project is based on the 19th Century Chorographic Commission in Colombia that includes the inhabitants of the Caribbean coast which were missing in the original scientific study. Rumié puts together one hundred people from the Caribbean region whose unique characteristics share the passion and commitment for their trade\, and express in a special way their taste and the value they place on the food from this region\, as food is one of the most relevant cultural elements. Rumié inserts the women as a type who were not included in the original Commission due to gender and race. \n\n\n\nBorn in Cartagena de Indias\, Rumié studied painting\, drawing and sculpture at the Cartagena School of Fine Arts (1980-1982). From 1989 to 1996 she worked on hyperrealist painting. She then broke away from academia and pursued her work with a clear focus on social issues\, both territorial and on patrimony\, questioning her commitment as an artist to society. She has held important exhibitions in Colombia\, Chile\, the United States and France. She exhibited Hálito Divino (Divine Breath) and Tejiendo calles (Weaving Streets) at the Nohra Haime Gallery in New York and at NH Galería in Cartagena\, Colombia. She participated in Art Paris and in the first Biennial of Contemporary Art of Cartagena de Indias with her work Lugar común (Common Place). She was awarded the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center fellowship and Women Together from the United Nations (UN) for her anthropological\, social and artistic works. Special thanks to Julia P. In 2011 she opened NH Galería in Cartagena\, Colombia where she cofounded in 2014 the First International Contemporary Art Biennial. Nohra has curated many exhibitions and has written and published books.  \n\n\n\n\nHaime started writing for the art section of the Spanish Edition of Harper’s Bazaar in the 1980s\, and later through her own publications on the diverse artists she has represented and worked with. She has equally juried several exhibitions and has been invited to lecture\, give talks and participate in panels. In 2011\, Nohra was awarded the Key to the City of Cartagena\, Colombia. In 2013 she received the Jessica Cosgrave award from Finch College Alumnae Association in New York and was nominated in 2014 as one of the 100 Colombians by the 100 Colombians Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable at the Marian Goodman Gallery for a bespoke viewing of Intimacy\, a moving-image and sound film by Robin Coste Lewis. We’ll meet Marian Goodman Gallery Managing Partner Emily-Jane Kirwan at 5:30 pm for a talk—and enjoy a glass of wine\, courtesy of the gallery—and start the film at 6 pm.  \n\n\n\nA single-channel video projection with sound\, the installation features projected images from a selection of 66 photographs representing a modern 20th-Century photographic archive depicting the Lewis family and their friends. The trove of portraits\, discovered by Lewis approximately 25 years ago in the home of her maternal grandmother\, Dorothy Mary Coste Thomas Brooks\, are sepia\, tintypes\, color and black-and-white pictures that recount the history of the Lewis family and circle. \n\n\n\nThe Lewis family\, along with millions of other Americans\, fled the Southern States of America in the 20th Century as part of the Great Migration west\, in search of a place devoid of racism\, injustice\, and white terrorism.  With the upheaval of forced migration\, and concomitant scattering of a family unit and dispersal of possessions\, the existence of this deep collection of photographic images represents a distinctive vernacular collection\, especially notable for its volume\, rarity and joyful\, private sentiment.  \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members $10\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guests – $20\n\n\n\nPublic – $25\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNot a member? In 2015\, her first book of poems\, Voyage of the Sable Venus\, which examined the fraught history of art\, gender\, and race\, won The National Book Award in poetry\, marking the first time a debut by an African American had ever won the prize in the Foundation’s history\, and the first time a debut collection of poetry had won the award since 1974. The images in Intimacy also appear in her new book of poetry\, To the Realization of Perfect Helplessness (2022)\, published by Knopf\, which recently won an NAACP Award in Poetry and PEN Award in poetry.Lewis received her Bachelor of Art from Hampshire College in creative writing and comparative literature; a Master of Theological Studies degree in Sanskrit and comparative religious literature from the Divinity School at Harvard University; a Master of Fine Art in poetry at New York University; and a PhD from the University of Southern Creative Writing and Literature Program. Lewis\, who has taught at Hampshire College\, Hunter College\, Wheaton College\, and the NYU MFA in Paris\, is writer-in-residence at the University of Southern California. In 2021\, she was the Joseph Brodsky Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome\, and is currently a Ford Foundation Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum of Modern Art.

Cleopatra from ANTI-ICON: APOKALYPSIS\, 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFounded in 2013 by Mary Ryan and Jeffrey Lee\, RYAN LEE gallery has established itself as a welcoming place of discovery and dialogue for art ranging from post-war art to the contemporary. Celebrating emerging and established artists and estates\, the gallery takes a multi-generational approach to its programming\, presenting innovative and scholarly exhibitions across all spectrums of art practices\, including painting\, photography\, video\, sculpture\, and performance. The gallery takes chances on a wide variety of boundary-pushing artists; their work consistently transcends political\, cultural\, material\, or technical boundaries. In addition\, RYAN LEE has\, throughout its history\, demonstrated its long-standing interest and dedication to feminist\, Black and Asian American\, as well as queer narratives in the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The gallery is led by partners of different generations and backgrounds with over six decades of combined experiences informing its unique approach. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartine Gutierrez (b. 1989 Berkeley\, CA) is a transdisciplinary artist\, performing\, writing\, composing and directing narrative scenes to subvert pop-culture identity tropes—both personally and collectively intersectional to the discriminations of race\, gender\, class and nationality. Guiterrez examines advertising in order to hybridize the industry’s objectification of sex with the individual’s pursuit of self\, satirically undermining the aesthetics of what we know. It is Gutierrez herself who executes every role—simultaneously acting as subject\, artist\, and muse. These complicated intersections are innate to Gutierrez’s own multicultural upbringing as a first generation artist of indigenous descent and as an LGBTQ ally. Her malleable\, ever-evolving self-image catalogs the confluence of seemingly disparate modes\, conveying limitless potential for reinvention and reinterpretation.

Greenberg Rohatyn studied art at Vassar and NYU before becoming a private curator and advisor\, making connections between prospective patrons\, including hip-hop legend and filmmaker Jay-Z\, and up-and-coming artists. She continued to forge such connections through her salons\, and nurture and advise artists whose potential she recognizes. Her gallery\, Salon 94\, has three locations and is known for showcasing artists of wildly different styles and backgrounds; Greenberg Rohatyn is known for seeking out artists for the variety and range of their work. She chairs the board of Performa\, a performance art biennial\, and is part of the selection committee for the Frieze New York Art Fair. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable at The New Museum for a tour of a major solo exhibition of the work of Wangechi Mutu (b. 1972\, Nairobi)\, bringing together over one-hundred works from across her twenty-five-year career. The tour will be led by New Museum teaching artist\, Yasmeen Abdalla.ArtTable had the chance to interview Mutu in 2014 in partnership with artnet. This tour brings us full circle to see the significant development and accomplishment in her career since that time.Representing the full breadth of Mutu’s practice\, the presentation will encompass painting\, collage\, drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and performance. Mutu first gained acclaim for her collage-based practice exploring camouflage\, transformation\, and mutation. She extends these strategies to her work across various media\, developing hybrid\, fantastical forms that fuse mythical and folkloric narratives with layered sociohistorical references. “Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined” will trace connections between recent developments in the artist’s sculptural practice and her decades-long exploration of the legacies of colonialism\, globalization\, and African and diasporic cultural traditions. She holds an MFA in Fine Arts with distinction from Pratt Institute\, and Bachelor’s degrees from University of Massachusetts\, Boston in Studio Art with honors\, and in Anthropology (emphasis in Historical & Collaborative Archaeology\, including field schools with Hassanamesit Woods and the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation); with a Minor in Women’s\, Gender & Sexuality Studies. \n\n\n\n\nShe has been a visiting artist and speaker at institutions including Columbia University Teaching College; El Barrio Art Space\, Fairleigh Dickinson University; Parsons School for Design; Pratt Institute; Sarah Lawrence College; and University of Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:See below to register for either the 4:00 PM or the 5:00 PM tour group. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Laura Phipps\, Assistant Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, with Caitlin Chaisson\, Curatorial Project Assistant\, for a tour of the first New York retrospective of groundbreaking artist\, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (b. 1940\, citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation). Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map brings together nearly five decades of Smith’s drawings\, prints\, paintings\, and sculptures in the largest and most comprehensive showing of her career to date. \n\n\n\nSmith’s work engages with contemporary modes of making\, from her idiosyncratic adoption of abstraction to her reflections on American Pop art and neo-expressionism. These artistic traditions are incorporated and reimagined with concepts rooted in Smith’s own cultural practice\, reflecting her belief that her “life’s work involves examining contemporary life in America and interpreting it through Native ideology.” Employing satire and humor\, Smith’s art tells stories that flip commonly held conceptions of historical narratives and illuminate absurdities in the formation of dominant culture. Smith’s approach importantly blurs categories and questions why certain visual languages attain recognition\, historical privilege\, and value.  Across decades and mediums\, Smith has deployed and reappropriated ideas of mapping\, history\, and environmentalism while incorporating personal and collective memories. She has been at the Whitney since the summer of 2009\, and her recent projects include Virginia Overton: Sculpture Gardens\, Open Plan: Andrea Fraser and a group show of emerging artists Flatlands. She has also co-curated a project with Michele Abeles and the permanent collection exhibition Test Pattern. Laura has assisted with numerous museum exhibitions including 2010\, the Whitney Biennial\, Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection\, Glenn Ligon: AMERICA\, Singular Visions\, Wade Guyton OS\, Sinister Pop\, and Jeff Koons: A Retrospective. \n\n\n\n\nShe has served on the grant selection committee of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation\, as a visiting critic for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace and Smackmellon Studio Program\, and as a guest curator at the Kentler Drawing Center\, Brooklyn. Prior to the Whitney\, Phipps worked in the curatorial department and director’s office of the Modern Art Museum\, Fort Worth. She received her MA\, Art History at Hunter College\, CUNY and BFA\, Studio Art and BS\, Psychology from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth\, Texas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Chaisson is curator and critic based in New York\, and holds an MA in Curatorial Studies from Bard College. She currently works at the Whitney Museum of American Art. \n\n\n\nFrom 2016–2019\, she served as the Director and Curator of Far Afield\, an initiative that supports regionally-connected artistic and curatorial practices. She has also held positions and contracts at The Drawing Center (New York City)\, e-flux (New York City)\, Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Vancouver)\, AKA Artist-Run Centre (Saskatoon)\, and the Anvil Centre (New Westminster). SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Tour of Wendy Red Star's "Our Side" at Sargent's Daughters
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Sargent’s Daughters gallery for a tour of Our Side—the third solo exhibition of Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooke (Crow)\, b.1981\, Billings\, MT) at the gallery. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Spring 2023 release of Red Star’s monograph Bíilukaa\, published by Radius Books and featuring interviews with the artist\, members of her extended family\, and scholars. The book’s title\, Bíilukaa\, is in reference to what the Apsáalooke (Crow) call themselves: Our Side. \n\n\n\nOur Side builds upon Red Star’s research into historical photographs of Apsáalooke individuals and objects\, with the artist drawing on both her personal collection and works held in museums and archives across the country. Red Star notes: “Since the time I left the Crow reservation I have encountered my tribe’s material culture in every city I have exhibited or occupied. It is incredible that so much of my community’s history and material culture is kept in the vaults of these institutions hundreds of miles away from their source.”  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition includes two distinct bodies of work; the first are photographic prints originally produced for Bíilukaa\, reimagined as a dynamic installation in the gallery. The second consists of large-scale unique collages\, which layer photographs on top of fabrics typical of Apsáalooke regalia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWendy Red Star (b.1981\, Billings\, MT) lives in Portland\, OR. Red Star has exhibited at venues including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York\, NY)\, Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn\, NY)\, both of which have her works in their permanent collections; Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain (Paris\, France)\, Domaine de Kerguéhennec (Bignan\, France)\, Portland Art Museum (Portland\, OR)\, Hood Art Museum (Hanover\, NH)\, St. Louis Art Museum (St. Louis\, MO)\, Minneapolis Institute of Art (Minneapolis\, MN)\, and the Frost Art Museum (Miami\, FL). \n\n\n\nHer work is in public collections including the Museum of Modern Art (New York\, NY)\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York\, NY)\, the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York\, NY)\, the Guggenheim Museum (New York\, NY)\, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth\, TX)\, the Denver Art Museum (Denver\, CO)\, the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College (Clinton\, NY)\, the Baltimore Museum of Art (Baltimore\, MD)\, the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville\, VA)\, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University (Durham\, NC)\, the Birmingham Museum of Art (Birmingham\, AL)\, the Williams College Museum of Art (Williamstown\, MA)\, the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester (Rochester\, NY)\, San Antonio Museum of Art (San Antonio\, TX)\, The Seattle Art Museum (Seattle\, WA)\, and the British Museum (London\, UK). \n\n\n\nShe served as visiting lecturer at Yale University (New Haven\, CT)\, the Figge Art Museum (Davenport\, IA)\, the Banff Centre (Banff\, Canada)\, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne (Melbourne\, Australia)\, Dartmouth College (Hanover\, NH)\, CalArts (Valencia\, CA)\, Flagler College (St. Augustine\, FL)\, and I.D.E.A. Space in Colorado Springs (Colorado Springs\, CO). In 2017\, Red Star was awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and in 2018 she received a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship. Her first career survey exhibition “Wendy Red Star: A Scratch on the Earth” was at the Newark Museum in New Jersey through May 2019\, concurrently with her first New York solo gallery exhibition at Sargent’s Daughters. In the fall of 2022\, Red Star had a solo project with the Public Art Fund titled Travels Pretty\, on JCDeaux bus shelters across Boston\, MA; Chicago\, IL; and New York\, NY. Fabric and archival pigment prints mounted on gatorboard\, 44 x 44″ \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Tour LeaderChristine Nyce is a curator and writer originally from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin.  She is based in New York\, where she is a Gallery Associate and Curator with Sargent’s Daughters gallery.  She holds a BA in Art History from Williams College and a MA in Curatorial Studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies\, Bard College.About the GallerySargent’s Daughters was founded in 2014 on the Lower East Side by Allegra LaViola. The gallery takes its name from the painter John Singer Sargent\, who was an innovator working in a traditional medium. Accordingly\, the gallery interest is in artists whose work combines the same qualities of tradition and cutting edge. In addition to exhibitions by represented gallery artists\, Sargent’s Daughters creates collaborations as a platform for exploring new conversations within a wider context and presents a strong program of primarily women artist\, often highlighting overlooked artists working outside the established gallery world. The gallery has a history of granting young artists their first exhibition opportunities\, placing works in major museums\, and producing catalogues to further the dialogue of the artists’ work. Photo by Yasunori Matsui \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nBorn in Lahore\, Pakistan\, in 1969\, Shahzia Sikander took up the traditional practice of miniature painting during Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq’s military regime\, at a time when the medium was deeply unpopular among young artists. Sikander earned a B.F.A. in 1991 from the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore\, where she received rigorous training from master miniaturist Bashir Ahmad. She became the first woman to teach in the Miniature Painting Department at NCA\, alongside Ahmad\, and was the first artist from the department to challenge the medium’s technical and aesthetic framework. Sikander’s breakthrough work\, The Scroll\, 1989–90\, received national critical acclaim in Pakistan\, winning the prestigious Shakir Ali Award\, the NCA’s highest merit award\, and the Haji Sharif award for excellence in miniature painting\, subsequently launching the medium into the forefront of NCA’s program\, which brought international recognition to this medium within contemporary art practices. The artist moved to the United States to pursue an M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 1995; from 1995 to 1997\, she participated in the CORE Program of the Glassell School of Art at The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curator\n\n\n\n\nBrooke Kamin Rapaport is deputy director and Martin Friedman chief curator at New York’s Madison Square Park Conservancy\, which she joined in 2013. She was commissioner and curator of the 2019 United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale with the exhibition Martin Puryear: Liberty/Liberta. A major catalogue published by Gregory R. Miller accompanied the Venice exhibition. At Madison Square Park Conservancy\, she is responsible for the outdoor public sculpture program of commissioned work by contemporary artists including Diana AI-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Teresita Fernandez\, Maya Lin\, Josiah McElheny\, Martin Puryear\, Erwin Redl\, Arlene Shechet\, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. She is the founder of Public Art Consortium\, a national initiative of museum\, public art\, and sculpture park colleagues launched in 2017. Rapaport was a curator of contemporary art at the Brooklyn Museum and a guest curator at The Jewish Museum. She sits on the boards of three artist-endowed foundations and the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College.
