For more than twenty-five years\, Cecily Brown (b. 1969) has transfixed viewers with sumptuous color\, bravura brushwork\, and complex narratives that relate to some of Western art history’s grandest and oldest themes. After moving to New York from London in the 1990s\, she revived painting for a new generation alongside a handful of other artists—many of them also women—at the very moment critics were questioning its import and relevance. The first full-fledged museum survey of Brown’s work in New York since she made the city her home\, “Cecily Brown: Death and the Maid” assembles a select group of some fifty paintings\, drawings\, sketchbooks\, and monotypes from across her career to explore the intertwined themes of still life\, memento mori\, mirroring\, and vanitas—symbolic depictions of human vanity or life’s brevity—that have propelled her dynamic and impactful practice for decades. The tour will be led by by the Aaron I. Fleischman Curator\, Modern and Contemporary Art\, Ian Alteveer. \n\n\n\nBrown has work in public collections including The MoMA\, The Whitney Museum of American Art\, and the Solomon R. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable at the Marian Goodman Gallery for a bespoke viewing of Intimacy\, a moving-image and sound film by Robin Coste Lewis. We’ll meet Marian Goodman Gallery Managing Partner Emily-Jane Kirwan at 5:30 pm for a talk—and enjoy a glass of wine\, courtesy of the gallery—and start the film at 6 pm.  \n\n\n\nA single-channel video projection with sound\, the installation features projected images from a selection of 66 photographs representing a modern 20th-Century photographic archive depicting the Lewis family and their friends. The trove of portraits\, discovered by Lewis approximately 25 years ago in the home of her maternal grandmother\, Dorothy Mary Coste Thomas Brooks\, are sepia\, tintypes\, color and black-and-white pictures that recount the history of the Lewis family and circle. \n\n\n\nThe Lewis family\, along with millions of other Americans\, fled the Southern States of America in the 20th Century as part of the Great Migration west\, in search of a place devoid of racism\, injustice\, and white terrorism.  With the upheaval of forced migration\, and concomitant scattering of a family unit and dispersal of possessions\, the existence of this deep collection of photographic images represents a distinctive vernacular collection\, especially notable for its volume\, rarity and joyful\, private sentiment.  \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members $10\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guests – $20\n\n\n\nPublic – $25\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNot a member? In 2015\, her first book of poems\, Voyage of the Sable Venus\, which examined the fraught history of art\, gender\, and race\, won The National Book Award in poetry\, marking the first time a debut by an African American had ever won the prize in the Foundation’s history\, and the first time a debut collection of poetry had won the award since 1974. The images in Intimacy also appear in her new book of poetry\, To the Realization of Perfect Helplessness (2022)\, published by Knopf\, which recently won an NAACP Award in Poetry and PEN Award in poetry.Lewis received her Bachelor of Art from Hampshire College in creative writing and comparative literature; a Master of Theological Studies degree in Sanskrit and comparative religious literature from the Divinity School at Harvard University; a Master of Fine Art in poetry at New York University; and a PhD from the University of Southern Creative Writing and Literature Program. Lewis\, who has taught at Hampshire College\, Hunter College\, Wheaton College\, and the NYU MFA in Paris\, is writer-in-residence at the University of Southern California. In 2021\, she was the Joseph Brodsky Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome\, and is currently a Ford Foundation Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum of Modern Art.

Celebrating emerging and established artists and estates\, the gallery takes a multi-generational approach to its programming\, presenting innovative and scholarly exhibitions across all spectrums of art practices\, including painting\, photography\, video\, sculpture\, and performance. The gallery takes chances on a wide variety of boundary-pushing artists; their work consistently transcends political\, cultural\, material\, or technical boundaries. In addition\, RYAN LEE has\, throughout its history\, demonstrated its long-standing interest and dedication to feminist\, Black and Asian American\, as well as queer narratives in the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The gallery is led by partners of different generations and backgrounds with over six decades of combined experiences informing its unique approach. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartine Gutierrez (b. 1989 Berkeley\, CA) is a transdisciplinary artist\, performing\, writing\, composing and directing narrative scenes to subvert pop-culture identity tropes—both personally and collectively intersectional to the discriminations of race\, gender\, class and nationality. Guiterrez examines advertising in order to hybridize the industry’s objectification of sex with the individual’s pursuit of self\, satirically undermining the aesthetics of what we know. It is Gutierrez herself who executes every role—simultaneously acting as subject\, artist\, and muse. These complicated intersections are innate to Gutierrez’s own multicultural upbringing as a first generation artist of indigenous descent and as an LGBTQ ally. Her malleable\, ever-evolving self-image catalogs the confluence of seemingly disparate modes\, conveying limitless potential for reinvention and reinterpretation.

Greenberg Rohatyn studied art at Vassar and NYU before becoming a private curator and advisor\, making connections between prospective patrons\, including hip-hop legend and filmmaker Jay-Z\, and up-and-coming artists. She continued to forge such connections through her salons\, and nurture and advise artists whose potential she recognizes. Her gallery\, Salon 94\, has three locations and is known for showcasing artists of wildly different styles and backgrounds; Greenberg Rohatyn is known for seeking out artists for the variety and range of their work. She chairs the board of Performa\, a performance art biennial\, and is part of the selection committee for the Frieze New York Art Fair. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable at The New Museum for a tour of a major solo exhibition of the work of Wangechi Mutu (b. 1972\, Nairobi)\, bringing together over one-hundred works from across her twenty-five-year career. The tour will be led by New Museum teaching artist\, Yasmeen Abdalla.ArtTable had the chance to interview Mutu in 2014 in partnership with artnet. This tour brings us full circle to see the significant development and accomplishment in her career since that time.Representing the full breadth of Mutu’s practice\, the presentation will encompass painting\, collage\, drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and performance. Mutu first gained acclaim for her collage-based practice exploring camouflage\, transformation\, and mutation. She extends these strategies to her work across various media\, developing hybrid\, fantastical forms that fuse mythical and folkloric narratives with layered sociohistorical references. “Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined” will trace connections between recent developments in the artist’s sculptural practice and her decades-long exploration of the legacies of colonialism\, globalization\, and African and diasporic cultural traditions. She is interested in ephemera; aftermaths; and the stories told\, and secrets kept by imprints and objects that speak to our contemporary culture. She holds an MFA in Fine Arts with distinction from Pratt Institute\, and Bachelor’s degrees from University of Massachusetts\, Boston in Studio Art with honors\, and in Anthropology (emphasis in Historical & Collaborative Archaeology\, including field schools with Hassanamesit Woods and the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation); with a Minor in Women’s\, Gender & Sexuality Studies. \n\n\n\n\nShe has been a visiting artist and speaker at institutions including Columbia University Teaching College; El Barrio Art Space\, Fairleigh Dickinson University; Parsons School for Design; Pratt Institute; Sarah Lawrence College; and University of Massachusetts. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Art in Odd Places; the Boiler; Bronx Art Space; Bullet Space; Chashama; Cornell University; Ed Varie; Elizabeth Foundation; La Bodega; Open Source; Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space; Nars Foundation; PS122 Gallery; and Spring Break Art Show.

DESCRIPTION:See below to register for either the 4:00 PM or the 5:00 PM tour group. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Laura Phipps\, Assistant Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, with Caitlin Chaisson\, Curatorial Project Assistant\, for a tour of the first New York retrospective of groundbreaking artist\, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (b. 1940\, citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation). Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map brings together nearly five decades of Smith’s drawings\, prints\, paintings\, and sculptures in the largest and most comprehensive showing of her career to date. \n\n\n\nSmith’s work engages with contemporary modes of making\, from her idiosyncratic adoption of abstraction to her reflections on American Pop art and neo-expressionism. These artistic traditions are incorporated and reimagined with concepts rooted in Smith’s own cultural practice\, reflecting her belief that her “life’s work involves examining contemporary life in America and interpreting it through Native ideology.” Employing satire and humor\, Smith’s art tells stories that flip commonly held conceptions of historical narratives and illuminate absurdities in the formation of dominant culture. Smith’s approach importantly blurs categories and questions why certain visual languages attain recognition\, historical privilege\, and value.  Across decades and mediums\, Smith has deployed and reappropriated ideas of mapping\, history\, and environmentalism while incorporating personal and collective memories. She has been at the Whitney since the summer of 2009\, and her recent projects include Virginia Overton: Sculpture Gardens\, Open Plan: Andrea Fraser and a group show of emerging artists Flatlands. She has also co-curated a project with Michele Abeles and the permanent collection exhibition Test Pattern. Laura has assisted with numerous museum exhibitions including 2010\, the Whitney Biennial\, Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection\, Glenn Ligon: AMERICA\, Singular Visions\, Wade Guyton OS\, Sinister Pop\, and Jeff Koons: A Retrospective. \n\n\n\n\nShe has served on the grant selection committee of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation\, as a visiting critic for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace and Smackmellon Studio Program\, and as a guest curator at the Kentler Drawing Center\, Brooklyn. Prior to the Whitney\, Phipps worked in the curatorial department and director’s office of the Modern Art Museum\, Fort Worth. She received her MA\, Art History at Hunter College\, CUNY and BFA\, Studio Art and BS\, Psychology from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth\, Texas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Chaisson is curator and critic based in New York\, and holds an MA in Curatorial Studies from Bard College. She currently works at the Whitney Museum of American Art. \n\n\n\nFrom 2016–2019\, she served as the Director and Curator of Far Afield\, an initiative that supports regionally-connected artistic and curatorial practices. SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Tour of Wendy Red Star's "Our Side" at Sargent's Daughters
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Sargent’s Daughters gallery for a tour of Our Side—the third solo exhibition of Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooke (Crow)\, b.1981\, Billings\, MT) at the gallery. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Spring 2023 release of Red Star’s monograph Bíilukaa\, published by Radius Books and featuring interviews with the artist\, members of her extended family\, and scholars. The book’s title\, Bíilukaa\, is in reference to what the Apsáalooke (Crow) call themselves: Our Side. \n\n\n\nOur Side builds upon Red Star’s research into historical photographs of Apsáalooke individuals and objects\, with the artist drawing on both her personal collection and works held in museums and archives across the country. Red Star notes: “Since the time I left the Crow reservation I have encountered my tribe’s material culture in every city I have exhibited or occupied. It is incredible that so much of my community’s history and material culture is kept in the vaults of these institutions hundreds of miles away from their source.”  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition includes two distinct bodies of work; the first are photographic prints originally produced for Bíilukaa\, reimagined as a dynamic installation in the gallery. The second consists of large-scale unique collages\, which layer photographs on top of fabrics typical of Apsáalooke regalia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWendy Red Star (b.1981\, Billings\, MT) lives in Portland\, OR. Her first career survey exhibition “Wendy Red Star: A Scratch on the Earth” was at the Newark Museum in New Jersey through May 2019\, concurrently with her first New York solo gallery exhibition at Sargent’s Daughters. In the fall of 2022\, Red Star had a solo project with the Public Art Fund titled Travels Pretty\, on JCDeaux bus shelters across Boston\, MA; Chicago\, IL; and New York\, NY. The gallery takes its name from the painter John Singer Sargent\, who was an innovator working in a traditional medium. Accordingly\, the gallery interest is in artists whose work combines the same qualities of tradition and cutting edge. In addition to exhibitions by represented gallery artists\, Sargent’s Daughters creates collaborations as a platform for exploring new conversations within a wider context and presents a strong program of primarily women artist\, often highlighting overlooked artists working outside the established gallery world. The gallery has a history of granting young artists their first exhibition opportunities\, placing works in major museums\, and producing catalogues to further the dialogue of the artists’ work. Photo by Yasunori Matsui \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nBorn in Lahore\, Pakistan\, in 1969\, Shahzia Sikander took up the traditional practice of miniature painting during Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq’s military regime\, at a time when the medium was deeply unpopular among young artists. Sikander earned a B.F.A. in 1991 from the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore\, where she received rigorous training from master miniaturist Bashir Ahmad. She became the first woman to teach in the Miniature Painting Department at NCA\, alongside Ahmad\, and was the first artist from the department to challenge the medium’s technical and aesthetic framework. Sikander’s breakthrough work\, The Scroll\, 1989–90\, received national critical acclaim in Pakistan\, winning the prestigious Shakir Ali Award\, the NCA’s highest merit award\, and the Haji Sharif award for excellence in miniature painting\, subsequently launching the medium into the forefront of NCA’s program\, which brought international recognition to this medium within contemporary art practices. The artist moved to the United States to pursue an M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 1995; from 1995 to 1997\, she participated in the CORE Program of the Glassell School of Art at The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curator\n\n\n\n\nBrooke Kamin Rapaport is deputy director and Martin Friedman chief curator at New York’s Madison Square Park Conservancy\, which she joined in 2013. She was commissioner and curator of the 2019 United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale with the exhibition Martin Puryear: Liberty/Liberta. A major catalogue published by Gregory R. Miller accompanied the Venice exhibition. At Madison Square Park Conservancy\, she is responsible for the outdoor public sculpture program of commissioned work by contemporary artists including Diana AI-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Teresita Fernandez\, Maya Lin\, Josiah McElheny\, Martin Puryear\, Erwin Redl\, Arlene Shechet\, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. She is the founder of Public Art Consortium\, a national initiative of museum\, public art\, and sculpture park colleagues launched in 2017. Rapaport was a curator of contemporary art at the Brooklyn Museum and a guest curator at The Jewish Museum. She sits on the boards of three artist-endowed foundations and the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Guggenheim as curator Andrea Zambrano walks us through a retrospective of one of the great pioneering Venezuelan artists\, Gego—or Gertrud Goldschmidt (b. 1912\, Hamburg; d. 1994\, Caracas). Gego’s two-and-three dimensional works across many media explored the relationship between line\, space\, and volume. Her practice is grounded in the intersections of geometric abstraction\, Kinetic art\, Minimalism\, and Post-Minimalism. Trained as an architect (b. 1912 Hamburg; d. 1994 Caracas)\, known for her organic forms\, linear structures\, and spatial investigations\, this exhibition will establish her legacy in the Americas. \n\n\n\nAndrea Zambrano is an emerging curator and art historian whose primary research interests are in modern and contemporary Latin American art. In 2021 she joined the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, serving as the curatorial assistant on Alex Katz: Gathering (2021). Currently\, Andrea is on the curatorial team of Gego: Measuring Infinity\, working alongside exhibition curators Geaninne Gutiérrez-Guimarães and Pablo Leon de la Barra. Her innovative approaches to cultivating support for artists have enriched our national cultural landscape\, and her leadership has changed the lives of hundreds of artists across the country.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to her leadership roles\, Deana is a strategic advisor to cultural foundations and philanthropic initiatives including the Ruth Foundation for the Arts and Chanel Next Prize. She also lectures extensively\, consults on various art initiatives\, contributes to cultural publications\, and has taught at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and Towson University. Read her bio here. \n\n\n\nAbout Marcela Guerrero\n\n\n\nGuerrero is the DeMartini Family Curator at The Whitney Museum of American Art. She has worked at the Whitney for nearly six years and was the Museum’s first curator to specialize in Latinx art. She currently serves as the Jennifer Rubio Associate Curator and has curated landmark exhibitions including no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria. That show\, on view at the Museum through April 23\, explores the impact of the devastating storm on contemporary Puerto Rican art. This powerful and renowned exhibition is the first survey of Puerto Rican art at a major U.S. art museum in fifty years. Guerrero was also part of the curatorial team that organized Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art\, 1925–1945 at the Whitney in 2020\, and curated Pacha\, Llaqta\, Wasichay: Indigenous Space\, Modern Architecture\, a 2018 exhibition that featured the work of seven emerging Latinx artists. This summer\, Guerrero will co-curate an exhibition of artist Ilana Savdie’s latest work\, including paintings and drawings\, as well as new works produced for the Whitney. DESCRIPTION:Data about pay and gender equity when it comes to arts professionals is woefully inaccessible and incomplete. Over the past several months\, in an effort to remedy some of these problems and contribute valuable knowledge to our community\, ArtTable has collected new data via a survey about the changing contours of the artistic labor market in order to better understand trends and advocate for arts professionals\, artists\, and arts workers of all types. Based on the feedback we have received so far\, and continue to receive\, we are pleased to present this discussion on gender\, compensation\, and inequality among arts professionals at the Ford Foundation in New York City. \n\n\n\nClick here to take the survey if you have not done so already! Using ethnographic and archival methods\, her research has focused on the study of cultural production\, cultural organizations\, and cultural workers–with particular attention to the dynamics of inequality in art worlds. In particular\, she has conducted a comparative investigation of the effects of unionization in arts organizations and how it shapes racialized and gendered relations in the workplace. Having represented both management and executives in discrimination and harassment cases\, LaKeisha brings her extensive knowledge of the law as well as her familiarity with the strategies often adopted by the opposition to every engagement. She also interned with multiple children’s rights organizations during which she represented individual clients as well as prepared for large class actions. \nAbout Gillian Gualtieri\, PhD\nGillian is a sociologist of inequality\, art\, and work. In 2018\, she received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California\, Berkeley\, where she wrote a dissertation focused on understanding how gender and ethno-racial inequality shape the work experiences of cultural entrepreneurs\, especially chefs\, under the direction of two of the leading scholars in feminist theory and work. Alongside her dissertation research\, Gillian worked closely with several campus offices to conduct program evaluation research related to sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention education on campus. After completing her PhD\, she was a Dean’s Fellow at NYU\, where she continued her research focused on inequality and artistic labor and completed several consulting projects for the university focused on diversity\, equity\, and inclusion recruitment and retention efforts at the university. \nAfter two years at NYU\, Gillian moved to Vanderbilt University’s Curb Center for Art\, Enterprise\, and Public Policy\, where she collaborated on projects related to the study of inequality in artistic labor markets\, developing expertise in SNAAP (Strategic National Arts Alumni Project) data and receiving a National Endowment for the Arts grant to fund her collaborative research. Also at Vanderbilt\, she wrote the curriculum and helped lead the NEA-funded Racial Equity in Arts Leadership program\, an evidence-based diversity\, equity\, and inclusion leadership program co-sponsored by the Curb Center and MetroArts Nashville. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a tour of 1-800 Happy Birthday with ArtTable members Klaudia Ofwona Draber\, the exhibition’s curator\, and Marcia Santoni\, executive director of WORTHLESSSTUDIOS. \n\n\n\n1-800 Happy Birthday is an exhibition honoring Black and Brown lives killed by police. Originally a voicemail project\, now transformed into a large-scale exhibition in a 10\,000 square-foot warehouse\, 1-800 Happy Birthday is created by artist Mohammad Gorjestani and Even/Odd\, curated by Klaudia Ofwona Draber\, with artistic direction by Neil Hamamoto\, and presented by arts nonprofit WORTHLESSSTUDIOS with the aim of honoring the lives of those lost too soon. The families of Dujuan Armstrong\, Sandra Bland\, Philando Castile\, Stephon Clark\, Fred Cox\, Eric Garner\, Oscar Grant\, Xzavier Hill\, Donovon Lynch\, Sean Monterrosa\, Tony Robinson\, and Mario Woods are participating in the exhibition. \n\n\n\n1-800 Happy Birthday was originally created in 2020 by Even/Odd founder\, filmmaker\, and artist Mohammad Gorjestani as an ongoing voicemail project to honor Black and Brown victims of police killings and systemic racism. The project exists online at 1800HappyBirthday.com and allows loved ones and the public to leave and listen to voicemails left on the birthdays of ‘celebrants’ – those unjustly killed. Gorjestani teamed up with WORTHLESSSTUDIOS’ Founder and Artistic Director Neil Hamamoto and Curator Klaudia Ofwona Draber\, along with family members of the twelve celebrants\, to bring the digital project into the physical realm in a community-accessible\, large-scale exhibition. The show utilizes audio and video components\, a large mural created by Art1\, and personal ephemera to tell their stories. \n\n\n\nTwelve upcycled NYC pay phones are arranged on a few patches of lawn\, a concrete wall with a dedicated area for flowers hosts a large mural and balloons\, and birthday cards are available for purchase at a newsstand. Towards the back of this city landscape is a translucent building facade with an opening that leads to an interior setting – a family living room. This room acts as a resource center: filled with photos\, ephemera from the celebrants\, and educational resources. It is also meant as a space of refuge\, to rest and recharge. The exhibition design imagines a world that is just\, where streets are safe for Black and Brown people to just be. \n\n\n\nEach repurposed phone booth\, designed in collaboration with the families of the celebrants\, is dedicated to one person and features portraits of the celebrant and their family and friends. The visuals and ephemera included in the exhibition – such as Philando Castile’s favorite book and Xzavier Hill’s graduation cap – allow visitors a glimpse into the personal milestones\, interests and personalities of those being honored. These objects\, chosen by celebrant family members\, illustrate the divide between private conversation and public space. In a large-scale mural\, each celebrant is represented by their likeness. The tableau serves as a collective memory for the many individuals killed by the police\, and is designed to receive flowers\, birthday cards\, balloons\, and any other memorial offerings. The interactive and educational nature of the exhibition seeks to connect participants to each celebrant and to expand on the pervasive impact of policing and systemic racism in America. \n\n\n\nThis program is free to attend and open to ArtTable members and guests only. Klaudia has lived and led arts\, technology and strategy projects in Europe\, Africa and the United States. She also works as Head of Public Relations at Polish Cultural Institute New York. Previously she served as a consultant to the British Council Arts\, and worked at UBS\, managing arts CSR projects. Klaudia is the 2021-2022 Helena Rubinstein Fellow at the Whitney ISP Curatorial Studies Program. She is a member of ArtTable\, mentors at New Museum’s NEW INC\, and is a member of For(bes) The Culture. Klaudia holds MA in Art Business from the Sotheby‘s Institute of Art New York. She also holds MA in Economics from the Warsaw School of Economics. \nMarcia Santoni is the Executive Director of WORTHLESSSTUDIOS where she is leading efforts to provide arts access to the Bushwick/East Williamsburg community\, build capacity\, and renovate its 10\,000 square foot warehouse into a state-of-the-art fabrication facility. Marcia came to WORTHLESSSTUDIOS after spending two years as the Executive Director of Riverdale Neighborhood House\, a historic multi-service organization in the Bronx where she launched the Riverdale Food&Farm Hub. Prior to joining RNH\, she was Managing Director and COO for Pioneer Works\, the Brooklyn-based cultural center dedicated to building community through the arts and sciences. At Pioneer Works she led expansion from $3.5mm to $7mm over three years\, helping the artist founders build systems\, structure and leadership to match mission. DESCRIPTION:ArtTable Circle members are invited to join us for a very special collection visit at the home of Alice Sachs Zimet. \n\n\n\nAlice Sachs Zimet began to collect photography in early 1985 at a time when the medium was not recognized as a serious art form. The marketplace was nascent. There were few to no photo-only galleries\, photo-only art fairs\, photo-only auctions\, and it was rare to find a photography exhibition in a museum. While there was little acknowledgement\, Alice consistently defended her love of the medium even when most challenged her by saying ‘it’s not art’. \n\n\n\nToday\, fine art photography is a major global player with increased attention\, respect\, and market share. There are blockbuster museum shows\, photo-only auctions\, photo-only art fairs and photo-only galleries. And of course\, the number of photo collectors and prices have increased significantly. \n\n\n\nZimet’s lifelong passion for the arts began with her parents who were print collectors\, collecting images by Vuillard\, Bonnard\, Vlaminck\, Rouault\, and Lautrec\, among others. Her world was always steeped in the arts – professionally and academically. She holds two degrees in art history and her early professional career began at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \n\n\n\nHowever\, her life changed when\, for the next 20 years\, Zimet worked at The Chase Manhattan Bank where she created a new sponsorship marketing department and became Director\, Worldwide Cultural Affairs. She was given a small year-end bonus\, which soon became her collecting budget — whether for one photograph or the purchase of several. But that was her acquisition budget for the year. \n\n\n\nZimet has made a conscious effort to buy from all sources — galleries\, auctions\, benefit auctions\, art fairs and even trades. With a collecting career spanning nearly 40 years\, she has developed deep personal relationships with professionals across every aspect of the field. Her collection has grown to roughly 350 museum-quality images\, where she lives surrounded by the vast majority. “I consciously do not have storage. I live with most of my images surrounding me. With storage\, I would not be able to control my collecting impulse. She has lived and worked in Buenos Aires\, London and New York. She is a patron of the Contemporary Art Society in London and founding patron of The Drawing Room. In Miami\, she supports Locust Projects\, The Bass\, PAMM\, and the Lowe Museum. Her collection focuses on works on paper and photography and includes drawings by Yoshitomo Nara\, Marcel Dzama\, Liliana Porter\, Teresa Lanceta\, and Mona Hatoum; and photographs by Gillian Wearing\, Martin Parr\, and Shirin Neshat. Since moving to Miami\, she has started collecting works by South Florida-based artists and has joined the Board of Directors of Oolite Arts\, Miami’s leading support organization for the virtual arts. \n\n\n\nAfter two decades of experience in the banking industry and living in seven different countries\, Maria Pia Leon Angell decided to leave banking to advise wealthy individuals and families more broadly on their financial and non-financial wealth management decisions\, following a holistic approach. She entered the family office realm at Greenspring Family Office\, followed by AM Global. Forbes Family Trust acquired the last one. Forbes manages US$ 30B from 250 families and has offices in the US and Europe. She considers her best strength is an appreciation of beauty which she fulfills through her love for nature and the arts. She has belonged to the acquisition committee of the Museum of Art of Lima\, Peru\, and currently serves as Chair of the Miami Music Project. This non-profit uses music education as an instrument for social change. \n\n\n\nMelissa A. Passman advises U.S. and non-U.S. taxpayers on a range of tax and estate planning matters. She assists clients with tax and trusts and estate matters\, including tax planning on corporate and partnership structures and transactions\, implementing estate planning strategies\, and planning around alternative assets. Melissa represents clients with federal and state tax matters\, including international and domestic income and transfer tax planning for entities and individuals\, as well as tax controversy. Melissa has extensive experience in art law matters and has been recognized for her counsel. She draws on her experience with a major international art gallery and other arts institutions to counsel collectors\, advisors\, galleries\, tax-exempt organizations\, and family offices. Melissa advises these clients on matters around the acquisition\, ownership\, and disposition of artwork\, including the formation of private museums and other charitable vehicles\, as well as multijurisdictional tax planning. She also works with artists on developing robust legacy planning structures. \n\n\n\nNuria Richards is an arts professional who is passionate about art collections and the way they positively impact the market and philanthropy. She attended the Fine Arts School at the National University in Mexico City and holds an Art Business Graduate degree from Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Claremont Graduate University where she extended her academic interests to management for corporate collections as well as Ph.D. classes in Economics and Cultural Studies Nuria supports young and emerging artists through the curatorial project Clandestina and is the founder of RICHARDS & Co\, an Art Management & Estate Planning Agency that evaluates and creates strategies for acquiring\, selling\, transferring\, and donating art. She works\, with families and individuals\, designing the sale and acquisition of works by artists like George Condo\, Diego Rivera\, Wifredo Lam\, Joaquín Torres-García\, Victor Vasarely\, and Leonora Carrington. Her relationship with art and involvement with museums\, galleries\, artists\, and collectors in the US and Mexico is the result of invested conversations creating cultural value around the practice of art collecting. Nuria’s goal is to create strategies for collectors to successfully fulfill their art interests\, while positively impacting the community. Henrique Faria is a gallery specialized in the promotion of Latin American Art for over 20 years. The gallery specializes in modern and contemporary art\, with a strong emphasis on Geometric Abstraction and Conceptualism. \nThe Gallery maintains a rigorous exhibition program and participates continuously in international art fairs such as Frieze London and New York\, Art Basel Miami\, Paris Photo\, Zona Maco\, Mexico and ARCOmadrid\, amonst others. As the demand for Latin American art increases\, the gallery has gathered the attention of international collectors\, curators\, museums\, and institutions. More than 30 international gallerists with museum-quality programs will be present at Independent 20th Century. It will be the second of two fairs to take place in the organization’s 13th year. Our tour will be led by Independent Founder and CEO\, Elizabeth Dee. \n\n\n\nIndependent 20th Century will focus on artists who made a significant contribution to art history between the years 1900 and 2000\, yet who were uncelebrated in their day. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person tour of Cristina Iglesias’ Landscape and Memory\, on view at Madison Square Park in New York City. The tour will be led by ArtTable Member Brooke Kamin Rapaport\, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator at Madison Square Park Conservancy. Drinks will also be served.  \n\n\n\nSpanish artist Cristina Iglesias invites the public to consider the forgotten terrains and geographic history of New York City in a new public art installation opening this June\, her first major temporary public art project in the United States. Landscape and Memory places five bronze sculptural pools\, flowing with water\, into Madison Square Park’s Oval Lawn\, harkening back to when the Cedar Creek coursed across the land where the park stands today. Building on Iglesias’ practice of unearthing the forgotten and excavating natural history\, Landscape and Memory resurfaces in the imaginations of contemporary viewers the now-invisible force of this ancient waterway. There are 2 CitiBike drop-off points at 26th & Madison and Broadway & 25th.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Brooke Kamin Rapaport\n\n\n \nSince joining the Conservancy in 2013\, Brooke Kamin Rapaport has curated and overseen its program of commissioned public-sculpture exhibitions\, which has included such artists as Diana Al-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Teresita Fernandez\, Josiah McElheny\, Ivan Navarro\, Giuseppe Penone\, Martin Puryear\, and Arlene Shechet. Through the Conservancy\, she established Public Art Consortium\, a national initiative of museum\, public-art-program\, and sculpture park colleagues. In 2019\, she served as Commissioner and Curator of the United States Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition\, La Biennale di Venezia\, with a representation of artist Martin Puryear. \n\n\nRapaport has worked as a museum curator\, independent curator\, and art writer. During her 13-year tenure at the Brooklyn Museum\, she organized numerous exhibitions and wrote corresponding catalogues in her roles as assistant and then associate curator of contemporary art. As part of the Brooklyn Museum’s Grand Lobby series of installations\, she worked with contemporary artists to realize their projects. As guest curator at The Jewish Museum\, New York\, she organized Houdini: Art and Magic (2010)\, an interdisciplinary exhibition on the life and enduring significance to contemporary artists of the magician and escape artist Harry Houdini\, and the retrospective exhibition Louise Nevelson: Constructing a Legend (2007). Rapaport has also held positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, and the Jamaica Arts Center in Queens\, New York. She is a contributing editor and frequent writer for Sculpture magazine and a regular lecturer\, moderator\, panelist\, and catalogue essayist on contemporary art and public art. \n\n\n\nRapaport received her B.A. cum laude in art history from Amherst College and completed her M.A. in art history from Rutgers University. She is also the recipient of a Helena Rubinstein Fellowship in Museum Studies from the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. She sits on the Board of Directors of Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City\, Al Held Foundation\, von Rydingsvard and Greengard Foundation and is Vice President of the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation in New York. She currently serves on the board of the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nCristina Iglesias shapes large-scale\, site-specific sculpture and installations that probe the tension between past and present\, ancient and contemporary. Resisting the asceticism of the Minimalist movement\, Iglesias initially created grid-like structures in natural materials that were suspended to assemble pavilions and architectural spaces. Beginning in the 2000s\, Iglesias began to incorporate water into her permanent outdoor projects and sculptures. \n\n\n\nIglesias’s work has been the subject of solo presentations at museums internationally\, including Centro Botín\, Santander\, Spain (2018); Museo Reina Sofía\, Madrid (2013); Ludwig Museum\, Cologne (2006); Whitechapel Art Gallery\, London (2003); and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York (1997). She additionally has been commissioned to create major projects and installations at Bloomberg headquarters\, London (2017); Fondaciòn Botin\, Santander (2017); Tres Aguas at Toledo\, Spain (2014); Mexican Foundation of Environmental Education\, Baja\, California (2010); Museo del Prado\, Madrid (2007); and Royal Museum of Fine Art\, Antwerp (2006). The Museum of Fine Arts Houston opened Iglesias’ major permanent outdoor commission\, Inner Landscape (the lithosphere\, the roots\, the water) (2020) in front of the new Kinder Building. Last summer she realized Hondalea (2021)\, transforming a lighthouse into a sculpture on Santa Clara Island in the Bay of Donostia\, San Sebastián\, Spain. \n\n\n\nIglesias represented Spain at the Venice Biennale (1986\, 1993) and at the Biennale of Sydney (1990\, 2012); at the Carnegie International\, Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh (1995); the Taipei Biennial (2003); at the SITE Santa Fe Biennial (2006); and at the Folkstone Triennal (2011). \n\n\n\nIglesias was born in San Sebastián\, Northern Spain in November 1956. She studied Chemical Sciences in the University of the Basque Country (1976 – 1978)\, and ceramics and sculpture at the Chelsea College of Art in London (1980 – 1982). She was granted a Fulbright scholarship to study at Pratt Institute (1988) and was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste\, Munich (1995). \n\n\n\nHer studio is in Madrid\, Spain. \n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition (Continued)\n\n\n\nFor Landscape and Memory\, Iglesias digs deep into the park’s lawns to install five subterranean bronze sculptures carved with intricately patterned bas-reliefs. A subtle stream of water continuously trails across the sculptures’ hollowed surfaces. This evokes the constancy of water slowly eroding rocky surfaces across millennia. The installation conjures the existence of unseen ancient streams that continue to run beneath modern cities\, connecting the urban present with its primordial past. It connects us to abstract ideas of what lies beneath. \n\n\n\nNodding to historian Simon Schama’s major 1995 volume of the same name\, which surveyed the history of landscape across time and terrain\, Landscape and Memory is informed by Iglesias’ research into the history of the site. For the project\, Iglesias located and studied historic maps that document the water flow through Madison Square Park\, where the Cedar Creek once coursed. With nineteenth-century industrialization\, streams like the Cedar were buried underground to create additional land for building sites\, underground drains\, or sewers. Through Landscape and Memory\, Iglesias renders this history visible again\, inviting viewers to contemplate centuries of transformation of urban sites that were once natural. \n\n\n\nAbout Madison Square Park Conservancy\n\n\n\nMadison Square Park Conservancy cultivates and enlivens Madison Square Park\, a dynamic seven-acre public park in New York City’s Flatiron District and one of the city’s most treasured green spaces. Through its public art commissions\, horticultural stewardship\, and engaging programming\, the nonprofit creates an urban oasis that welcomes a diverse community of over 60\,000 visitors each day. Keats Myer is the Conservancy’s Executive Director. \n\n\n\nSince 2004\, the Conservancy has become a leader in commissioning new works of public art\, curating and presenting over 40 major site-specific installations and solo exhibitions through its art programming. Led by Brooke Kamin Rapaport\, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator\, the program invites leading artists to push the boundaries of their practice and create risk-taking new works that experiment with materiality\, scale\, and theme in response to the park’s unique environment. The ambition of the commissioning program expands each year alongside the diverse range of innovative artists including Diana Al-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Maya Lin\, Iván Navarro\, Martin Puryear\, Arlene Shechet\, Ursula von Rydingsvard\, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, the Conservancy served as the commissioning institution for the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, marking the first time that an organization whose visual art program focuses exclusively on public art has received this honor. Schleuning has a record of organizing thoughtful exhibitions and programs that are not only high profile and highly popular\, but also recognized for their contributions to scholarship. She has more than two decades of expertise in forming relationships with living designers and artists\, bridging the gap between historical and contemporary design\, and exploring how engaging with art and design can extend beyond museum walls. She is the Margot B. Perot Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the Dallas Museum of Art\, and her recent exhibitions and publications include the upcoming Cartier and Islamic Art: In Search of Modernity\, Electrifying Design: A Century of Lighting\, and Curbed Vanity: A Contemporary Foil by Chris Schanck. \nAs Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Design\, Schleuning oversees the decorative arts and design collection\, internationally recognized as one of the foremost decorative arts collections in the United States. The collection includes more than 8\,000 works of art from the 15th century to the present\, with a strength in European and American decorative arts\, most significantly 18th-century English silver\, 19th- and 20th-century American silver and ceramics\, and modern and contemporary jewelry and design. As the Museum focuses on the expansion of its contemporary holdings\, Schleuning’s deep experience in working with and maintaining relationships with contemporary designers and artist is a significant asset\, as is her interest in connecting design’s past and present. Among her other responsibilities\, Schleuning also oversees the decorative arts and design collection planning\, development\, scholarship\, and acquisitions. \nSchleuning served as Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, from 2011 until 2018. She organized numerous exhibitions\, including two of the 10 most attended exhibitions in the museum’s history. She was co-organizing curator for the nationally touring exhibition Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion\, which broke attendance records and became the eighth most-attended show at the High Museum of Art. Other notable exhibitions that ranged from historical scholarship to pushing the conceived boundaries of what defines a museum exhibition were Technicolor: New Works by Jaime Hayon (2017); Dream Cars: Innovative Design\, Visionary Ideas (2014)\, the 10th most-attended show at the High Museum; Earl Pardon’s Portable Art: Jewelry & Design (2015); and Bangles to Benches: Contemporary Jewelry and Design (2013). From 2013 to 2018\, she curated five dynamic and highly acclaimed designer interventions/playscapes that engages the community by activating the High’s Sifly Piazza\, and through that established the designer-in-residency project. \nPrior to joining the High Museum\, Schleuning served as Curator at The Wolfsonian–Florida International University\, having previously held positions as a Fellowship Coordinator and Assistant Curator at the institution\, where she produced exhibitions\, publications\, and programs with a focus on highlighting the power and impact of art and design in daily life. Before that\, she worked at the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan\, beginning in 2000 as Curatorial Collections Fellow\, advancing to Assistant Curator with a focus on art\, architecture\, craft\, and design. \nSchleuning graduated from Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts. She received her Master of Arts in the History of Decorative Arts from Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in conjunction with Parsons School of Design. In 2015 she was a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership.
