In 1980 Lucy Lippard argued that feminist art is “neither a style nor a movement” but rather “a value system\, a revolutionary strategy\, a way of life.” Taking Lippard’s statement as a point of departure\, the exhibition examines the values\, strategies\, and ways of life reflected in current feminist art. In keeping with Griselda Pollock’s observation that “feminism is a historical project and thus is itself constantly shaped and remodelled in relation to the living process of women’s struggles\,” New Time aims to demonstrate that feminism in the twenty-first century is multifaceted\, encompassing many complex issues and perspectives\, and therefore cannot be reduced to a single subject\, style\, or agenda. Although artworks made since 2000 are the primary focus\, the objects and installations on view span several generations\, mediums\, geographies\, and political sensibilities. Huanca creates experiential installations that incorporate paintings\, sculptures\, video\, scent and sound. The profound experiences and memories of Huanca’s first visit to Marfa in 2005 inspired the work in the exhibition. The artworks draw on visual\, cultural\, and mythological cues informed by feminism\, decolonialism and the artist’s personal and familial histories\, while simultaneously engaging with the biodiversity\, geology\, and dark skies of Far West Texas. The sky was particularly striking for Huanca–animated with cosmic and extraterrestrial forces while also revealing the natural rhythms of the sun and moon. \nESPEJO QUEMADA\, Huanca’s first exhibition since the pandemic\, uses mirrors as formal and metaphorical devices to respond to changing conditions. The title\, which translates to “burnt mirror” in English and is purposefully feminized in Spanish\, alludes to Huanca’s feminist praxis. “Espejo Quemada” suggests reflections of the current moment\, portals to the past and future\, and catalysts for combustion and change. Recently\, she was part of the curatorial team that organized Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art\, 1925-1945. In summer 2018\, Guerrero curated the exhibition Pacha\, Llaqta\, Wasichay: Indigenous Space\, Modern Architecture\, New Art. From 2014 to 2017 she worked as Curatorial Fellow at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles\, where she was involved in the much-lauded exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art\, 1960-1985\, organized as part of the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative and guest-curated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill and Andrea Giunta. Prior to her position at the Hammer\, she worked in the Latin American and Latino Art Curatorial department at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston (MFAH) where she served as Research Coordinator for the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA). Guerrero’s writing has appeared in a variety of publications and has contributed articles to numerous exhibition catalogues. Born and raised in Puerto Rico\, Guerrero received her BA from the University of Puerto Rico\, Rio Piedras Campus\, and holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \nDaisy Nam is the curator at Ballroom Marfa\, a contemporary art space located at the borderlands of Far West Texas. She recently co-edited a publication\, Best! Letters from Asian Americans in the arts with Paper Monument. Previously from 2015–19\, she was the assistant director at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts\, Harvard University where she organized exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs working closely with artists to engage with the campus community and public at large. Prior\, she curated and produced seven seasons of talks\, screenings\, performances\, and workshops from 2008–2015 as the assistant director of public programs at the School of the Arts\, Columbia University. Curatorial residencies and fellowships include: Marcia Tucker Senior Research Fellow at the New Museum\, New York (2020); Bellas Artes\, Bataan\, Philippines (2020); Surf Point in York\, Maine (2019); Gwangju Biennale Foundation\, Korea (2018). She has taught at RISD\, and lectured at Lesley University\, Northeastern\, SMFA/Tufts\, SVA as a visiting critic. \n  \nAbout Ballroom Marfa\nBallroom Marfa is an internationally recognized non-collecting contemporary art museum located in Marfa\, a rural town of less than 2\,000 people in Far West Texas. Established in 2003 by Virginia Lebermann and Fairfax Dorn\, the contemporary art and performance space is housed in a 1920s-era ballroom and is free and open to the public. With generous support from individuals and foundations\, Ballroom commissions new site-specific and site-inspired projects and gives artists and musicians the opportunity to engage with the magnificent landscape of the Big Bend. Since joining in the fall of 2016\, she has developed a dynamic program of exhibitions\, commissions\, and acquisitions that dialogue with the institution’s sites\, buildings\, and collections in view of a self-critical reassessment of the Museums’ histories and identities. \nCurrently on view at the Fine Arts Museums are her most recent exhibitions Wangechi Mutu: I am Speaking\, Are You Listening? at the Legion of Honor and Judy Chicago: A Retrospective\, at the de Young. Prior to these presentations\, Schmuckli curated Uncanny Valley: Being Human in the Age of AI\, the first major museum exhibition in the United States to reflect on the political and philosophical stakes of artificial intelligence and Specters of Disruption\, an exhibition drawn from the Museums’ Collections\, which connected the geological and colonial underpinnings of the de Young Museum to the current conditions in Northern California. Other projects include interventions at the Legion of Honor by Alexandre Singh\, Lynn Hershman Leeson\, Sarah Lucas\, and Urs Fischer\, as well as projects by Lisa Reihana\, Leonardo Drew\, Ranu Mukherjee\, Matt Mullican\, and DIS at the de Young. \nPreviously\, Schmuckli was the director and chief curator of the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston\, where she organized over thirty exhibitions including solo shows dedicated to The Propeller Group\, Matthew Ronay\, Analia Saban\, Slavs and Tatars\, Candice Breitz\, Tony Feher\, Johan Grimonprez\, Gabriel Kuri\, Chantal Akerman\, and Amy Sillman\, among many others. Schmuckli began her career in New York as a curatorial assistant at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and an assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art. She is a Swiss citizen and holds an MA degree in art history from the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität in Munich\, Germany. \nAbout the exhibition\nPioneering feminist artist Judy Chicago’s retrospective spans her early engagement with the Californian Light and Space Movement in the 1960s to her current body of work\, a searing investigation of mortality and environmental devastation\, begun in 2015. The exhibition includes approximately 130 paintings\, prints\, drawings\, and ceramic sculptures\, in addition to ephemera\, several films\, and a documentary. These awards help fuel the forward-thinking visual arts movement that makes the Bay Area unique. Established in 1986\, the awards were designed to further the development of the region’s MFA students and to foster exploration of their artistic potential. \nThe winners receive financial awards and have their work displayed in an exhibition at SOMArts Cultural Center. As universities and students have been impacted by COVID-19 this past year\, the 2020 exhibition\, curated by artist\, curator\, and educator Kevin B. Her work explores the relationship between death and identity. Reflecting on a personal experience of loss\, she states\, “The impact that it has on me is extreme\, prompting me to question my identity: who I am now and who I was before I lost them.” Birdsong completed her BFA from Humboldt State University. She is currently an MFA candidate at the San Francisco Art Institute. \nAmy Elkins works primarily in photography and with a series-based approach that oscillates between formal\, conceptual and documentary. She has spent the past fifteen years researching\, creating and exhibiting work that explores the multifaceted nature of masculine identity as well as the psychological and sociological impacts of incarceration. Elkins received her BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She is currently an MFA candidate in the Art Practice program at Stanford University. She has exhibited and published both nationally and internationally. \nClaudia Huenchuleo Paquien is a multimedia artist based in San Francisco. An urban Mapuche descendant\, born and raised in Chile\, her work reflects on feelings of sadness\, nostalgia\, and dislocation as collective constructions in attunement to places and territories. Through collage\, photography\, and installation\, her work interrogates the way in which memory\, culture\, and race function in relation to Indigenous contemporary identities and new systems of knowledge. Huenchuleo Paquien graduated from University of Concepción\, Chile\, with a degree in psychology. She completed a Post Baccalaureate in Visual Arts at UC Berkeley Extension. Taking a new curatorial and filmmaking approach\, Art21 connects and juxtaposes a group of acclaimed artists as they work along the U.S.-Mexico border\, interweaving their stories to chronicle the creative responses to one of the most divisive moments in the history of this area. There she developed\, implemented\, and oversaw contemporary art programming initiatives. In previous roles\, she supported various art programs and worked with some of the most celebrated artworks by supporting the corporate contemporary art collection at UBS\, the Union Bank of Switzerland\, and via her work at Blank Projects\, a contemporary art gallery in Cape Town\, South Africa. Significant milestones throughout Hazard’s career include producing more than 75 exhibitions in turn providing opportunities to more than 200 artists\, introducing the first outdoor mural project and festival in the Northern Virginia region\, and partnering with the Smithsonian American Art Museum in leading the conference\, State of Art 5/DC. \nJaynelle Hazard relocated to Washington\, DC from New York in 2017 where she earned a Master of Arts degree at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. She currently serves as the Co-Chair for the Washington\, DC Chapter of Sotheby’s Institute of Art Alumni and Chair of the Faith Flanagan Fellowship for ArtTable’s DC Chapter. \nAs the Executive Director and Curator of Tephra ICA\, Jaynelle builds a critically engaged practice by introducing methods to advance scholarship; extending reach in interdisciplinary experimentation of contemporary art and ideas; as well as engaging audiences of all backgrounds and identities. Her subjects\, largely drawn from her lifelong practice of self portraiture\, inhabit a dreamlike\, all-female world. Schahbaz initially trained in Indo-Persian miniature painting at Lahore’s National College of Arts\, and later earned a Master’s in Painting from Pratt Institute in New York. Her work addresses issues of personal freedom\, destruction\, sexuality and censorship by unveiling the beauty\, fragility and strength of the female form. \nHer solo shows include Dreaming (De Buck Gallery 2020)\, In Solitude (De Buck Gallery\, 2020)\, The Garden (Spring/Break Art Show\, 2018)\, Hiba Schahbaz: Self-Portraits (Project for Empty Space\, 2017)\, Hanged With Roses (Thierry Goldberg Gallery\, 2015)\, and In Memory (Noire Gallery\, 2012). Schahbaz has participated in numerous group exhibitions\, including a recent show curated by Jasmine Wahi in Tokyo\, “all the women. in me. are tired.”\, at THE CLUB\, as well as exhibitions at NiU Museum of Art\, The Untitled Space\, and Center for Book Arts; and has shown at art fairs such as Pulse Art Fair\, Untitled Art Fair\, Art Fair Cologne\, and Vienna Fair. \nPublications like Vice\, Hyperallergic\, The Huffington Post\, Coveteur\, Vogue\, NY Magazine\, Art Critical\, ArtForum\, Bomb Mag\, Paper\, and others have written about Hiba’s work. Schahbaz has curated painting exhibitions in Pakistan and India\, and she was an artist-in-residence at Mass MoCA\, The Wassaic Project\, Vermont Studio Center\, and the Alfred Z. Solomon Residency at the Tang Museum. During her decade-long stay in New York\, she earned her B.A. and M.A. in Art History at Hunter College and held positions in various institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). In Israel\, she worked as a curator at the Haifa Museum of Art and has organized public programs and curated numerous exhibitions in leading museums and various cultural venues. \nRotem is the co-founder and co-director of REACTIK\, an International Erasmus+ Jean-Monnet Network\, researching EU Cultural Diplomacy and Policy. Rotem served on the International Council of the renowned television series Art21\, the Israeli Lottery Committee for the Arts\, the International Exposure dance festival\, and DocAviv film festival. \nAbout Artis \nArtis is an independent nonprofit organization that supports contemporary artists from Israel whose work addresses aesthetic\, social and political questions to inspire reflection and debate. Artis was founded in 2004 by philanthropist Rivka Saker with the goal of amplifying international recognition of artists from Israel. Starting off as a series of public events timed with New York’s Armory Show\, the organization’s scope expanded to include programs that invest in artists and cultural exchange.
