On March 14th\, 2020\, in quick reaction to the US’s gallery and museum closures\, the two writers-curators and longtime collaborators immediately spent the weekend to kick start a group show to respond to the crisis. \n“We invited artists who are considered thought leaders\, artists who struggle with futuristic pessimism\, political outrage and psychic melt-downs. The invited artists have responded with unbridled enthusiasm and we will be posting new artists every day for the foreseeable future.” \nClick here for How can we Think of Art at Time Like This? \nBarbara Pollack is the author of Brand New Art from China: A Generation on the Rise published in 2018 by I.B. Tauris.  Her first book was The Wild\, Wild East: An American Art Critic’s Adventures in China\, published in May 2010 by Timezone 8 Books.  She is a leading authority on Chinese contemporary art and has been a featured speaker at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of New Champions in China\, also known as Summer Davos.     \nSince 1994\, Pollack has written extensively on contemporary Chinese art for such publications as Artnews\, Art & Auction\, the Village Voice\, Vanity Fair\, the New York Times\, and many others.  In addition to articles\, Pollack has contributed major catalogue essays for such leading artists as Li Songsong\, Lin Tianmiao\, Wang Gongxin\, Zhao Zhao\, Sun Xun\, and Tu Hongtao. Several of her essays were included in the China Art Book\, published by Dumont Literatur in 2007.   \nPollack was the lead curator of many shows of Chinese contemporary art including the groundbreaking My Generation: Young Chinese Artists\, the first exhibition of the 1980s generation of Chinese artists in the U.S.  which was shown at the Tampa Museum of Art and Museum Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg in 2014 and traveled to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the Orange County Museum of Art in 2015. She has also curated in China most notably Tu Hongtao: A Timely Journey\, at the Long Museum West Bund in November 2018and Sun Xun:  Prediction Laboratory at Yuz Museum\, also in Shanghai in 2016. In 2022\, she will present Mirror Image: Changing Chinese Identity at the Asia Society Museum in New York. \nBased on her research in this field\, she received two grants from Asian Cultural Council in 2008 and 2016 and the prestigious Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation arts writers grant in 2008.  Additionally\, Pollack is an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and frequently lectures on contemporary art at universities and museums throughout the United States and Asia. \nAnne Verhallen is a New York-based curator\, writer and artist agent. As director of the fine art division at CXA\, she has worked on projects for many leading artists\, including Kehinde Wiley\, Robert Wilson\, Friedrich Kunath and Lily Kwong. \nHer independent curatorial projects include Virtually There\, a performance conceived by Roya Sachs and Mafalda Milllies at MANA Comtemporary with collaborating artists the Compana Brothers\,  Kate Gillmore and Heather Row. SUMMARY:NOCAL | Artist Breakfast with Mildred Howard
DESCRIPTION:Image: Mildred Howard\, Tap — Investigation of Memory\, Installed 2019 Oakland Museum of California. \nClick here to Register!\nThe Northern California ArtTable Chapter is delighted to present our first Artist Breakfast with Mildred Howard. A voice for cultural heritage\, historical perspective\, and moving remembrance\, Howard has orchestrated public art\, monumental installation\, and striking assemblage for a resounding affirmation of human struggle and survival. \nAn educator and inspirational figure for younger artists\, Mildred Howard has created a sweeping body of work that has filled the decades with visual rhythms and echoing forms. From bottle houses to tap shoes\, Howard has mapped out territories of memory and mourning\, hope and loss. The recipient of the Lee Krasner Award for a lifetime of artistic achievement\, the Nancy Graves Award\, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award\, Howard has also received the Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. \nThis signature ArtTable program is expanding thanks to generous funding from the Pollock Krasner Foundation. The Pollock-Krasner Foundation has been a leader in providing grants enabling emerging and established artists to focus on their work. SUMMARY:NOCAL | Reading at the (Art)Table
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register!\nJoin ArtTable Northern California for a December Reading at the (Art)Table. This month we will be reading Jenny Odell’s How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy. \nArtTable NoCal is delighted to have Jenny Odell join this month’s event. \nABOUT HOW TO DO NOTHING\n“A complex\, smart and ambitious book that at first reads like a self-help manual\, then blossoms into a wide-ranging political manifesto.”—Jonah Engel Bromwich\, The New York Times Book Review \nNothing is harder to do these days than nothing. But in a world where our value is determined by our 24/7 data productivity . . . doing nothing may be our most important form of resistance. \nSo argues artist and critic Jenny Odell in this field guide to doing nothing (at least as capitalism defines it). Odell sees our attention as the most precious—and overdrawn—resource we have. Once we can start paying a new kind of attention\, she writes\, we can undertake bolder forms of political action\, reimagine humankind’s role in the environment\, and arrive at more meaningful understandings of happiness and progress. \nFar from the simple anti-technology screed\, or the back-to-nature meditation we read so often\, How to do Nothing is an action plan for thinking outside of capitalist narratives of efficiency and techno-determinism. Provocative\, timely\, and utterly persuasive\, this book is a four-course meal in the age of Soylent. \nWho’s attending this program? Click here to see who’s currently registered! \nThank you to Jan Wurm for organizing this program.

Following the walkthrough\, meet us in the beautifully landscaped garden for a celebratory reception catered by Le Basque catering! \nAbout the Rubell Museum \nOriginally launched as the Rubell Family Collection\, the museum has been renamed the Rubell Museum to emphasize its public mission and welcome audiences to see its contemporary art. “The word ‘museum’ makes the public feel welcome\, which is exactly our goal\,” stated Mera Rubell. The Rubells pioneered the model for sharing a private collection with the public. The new Rubell Museum expands their commitment to serving as a public resource and extends the public mission they’ve developed to date.  \nSince opening in Wynwood 26 years ago\, the Rubells have added many public programs\, including a partnership with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools\, which engages thousands of students every year\, and collaborations with local universities to offer seminars and critiques. The museum also hosts curatorial training internships and artist residencies with the support of the Knight Foundation. In addition to Mera\, Don\, and Jason Rubell\, the museum leadership includes Juan Roselione-Valadez\, who is the director of the museum and has been part of the team for 21 years.  \nThe Rubell Museum represents a new kind of institution that serves as an advocate for a diverse group of contemporary artists and a resource for both the public and the art world. Since the Rubells moved to  \nMiami\, many museums and public collections have opened in the city\, and it has developed a vital arts ecology. The Rubells see their new museum as providing a context for art and exhibitions that are available to the public in South Florida and beyond. \nWho’s attending this program? Credit: Jeenah Moon for The New York Times \nFrom Kanders to Contracts: Four Experts Discuss the Legal\, Policy and Ethical Issues Confronting Museums\, Dealers\, Donors and Collectors.\nEvery day brings news of a lawsuit\, court ruling or dispute relating to art. Did a prominent dealer sell a fake to an esteemed collector? Should a museum reject a gift from tainted hands? Should an important painting be deaccessioned so a museum can expand the breadth of its collection?  What is the intellectual property in visual art and how may it be used? Who has the final word on a work’s authenticity? \nEvent Schedule: \n6-6:30 PM: Exclusive Hosted Cocktail Reception for ArtTable Members for ArtTable’s Executive Director\, Jessica Porter\n6:30-8:30 PM: Panel Discussion \nExclusive Opportunity for ArtTable Members:\nPlease join ArtTable’s Northern CA’s Executive Committee for a private meeting with ArtTable Executive Director Jessica Porter at 6:00 p.m.\, prior to the Panel Discussion in the YBCA Lounge. Hastings College of the Law. \nJenny Dixon is Director Emeritus at the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum effective January 1\, 2018 after fourteen and a half years as its Director.  While at the Noguchi she uniquely changed the IRS status of what had been a private artist foundation\, of which the Museum was a program\, into a public benefit institution. He teaches a class on Art and the Law at Stanford Law School and is chair of Covington’s Copyright and Trademark practice group. \nKimberly Almazan is Counsel at Withers Worldwide and a member of its Art Law team.  Almazan’s art law practice includes the representation of artists\, dealers\, appraisers and auction houses in litigation and contractual negotiations. She was lead counsel in a group of lawsuits to recover collateral for a client that had a perfected security interest in a California gallery’s works of art; she successfully recovered damages for valuable works of art by\, among others\, Marc Chagall\, Georgia O’Keeffe\, and Jeff Koons\, that had been fraudulently conveyed after the gallery owner defaulted. Almazan is the Membership Chair and an Executive Committee member of ArtTable’s Northern California chapter. \n
