Over the course of her career she has cultivated a three-dimensional vocabulary incorporating a wide repertoire of materials and a dedication to craft. She has simultaneously built an expansive drawing practice that feeds and is fed by her sculptor’s sensibilities. Bourdette’s work has commented on social\, political\, or simply human predicaments\, often seasoned with compassion and humor.  \n\n\n\nGeologic features and fracturing earth\, the land as an uneasy topography\, informs her recent work. She views the accretions\, erosion\, and metamorphosis of Earth throughout geologic time as inversely analogous to our relatively compacted experience as human beings. The cumulative distortions\, upheavals\, erratic shifting of terrain\, seem to her as metaphors for this era we inhabit\, for a sense of surviving instability through instability. Though they reflect qualities of landforms\, she considers her works to occupy a zone between representation and abstraction; it utilizes the transformation and synthesis of materials imagery\, and ideas\, essentially aestheticizing the residue of earthly fragility and decomposition and\, in turn\, the potential for regeneration. \n\n\n\nBourdette earned her BA from Lewis and Clark College where she studied art and languages. She was the first recipient of the Bonnie Bronson Fellowship\, and has received a Visual Artist Fellowship from the Regional Arts & Culture Council and a Golden Spot award from The Ford Family Foundation. She has held residencies at Playa\, Caldera\, the Ucross Foundation\, and the Tamarind Institute. \n\n\n\nBourdette has exhibited in the United States and France\, including solo exhibitions at Elizabeth Leach Gallery (Portland\, OR)\, The Art Gym at Marylhurst University (Portland\, OR)\, The Tyler Museum of Art (Tyler\, TX)\, Kittredge Gallery\, University of Puget Sound (Tacoma\, WA)\, Klein Gallery (Chicago\, IL)\, The Alexandria Museum\, (Alexandria\, LA)\, and Galerie L’Aire du Verseau (Paris\, France). Her sculpture and drawings are in many public and private collections nationwide. Bourdette has also completed public art commissions in Oregon\, Washington\, North Carolina\, Arizona\, and Florida. Her art has been featured in Sculpture magazine and reviewed in Art in America\, Artweek\, and Visions Quarterly. She frequently collaborates on visual design for performance\, dance\, and film\, including the animated short film\, Bunnyheads\, with filmmaker Jim Blashfield. She is represented by the Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland\, Oregon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImages: Christine Bourdette\, Simmer\, 2021; graphite\, water-soluble pigment and pigment-based ink on paper; Courtesy of the artist and Elizabeth Leach Gallery / Christine Bourdette\, Shift\, 2021; vellum and pigment based ink; Courtesy of the artist and Elizabeth Leach Gallery \n\n\nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. The Pollock-Krasner Foundation has been a leader in providing grants enabling emerging and established artists to focus on their work. Funding helps artists to create new work\, acquire art supplies\, rent studio space\, and prepare exhibitions. The Foundation also provides grants to organizations that directly engage with artists\, such as artist residency programs. Please visit www.pkf.org for more information.

She has been the recipient of the Howard S. Wright Award\, Stranger Genius Award\, Mayor’s Arts Award\, and Hauberg Fellowship. Thomas has completed residencies at the Pilchuck School of Glass\, Stanwood; Museum of Glass\, Tacoma; and Goathead Press\, Tieton. She has held solo exhibitions at the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science; Seattle Art Museum; Bainbridge Island Art Museum; and Whatcom Museum of History and Art\, Bellingham. Thomas has participated in numerous group exhibitions\, including at the Bellevue Arts Museum; Northwest African American Museum\, Seattle; and Savannah College of Art and Design Museum of Art. Her work is included in the public collections of the Portland Art Museum\, Seattle Art Museum\, and Tacoma Art Museum. She is represented by the Claire Oliver Gallery in New York. \nAbout the exhibition\nPackaged Black brings together the work of artists Derrick Adams (b. 1970\, Baltimore\, MD) and Barbara Earl Thomas (b. 1948\, Seattle\, WA) in a collaborative\, multi-media installation developed from their shared dialogue about representation\, Black identity\, and practices of cultural resistance. This exhibition is a synthesis of a multi-year\, intergenerational\, and cross-country exchange between New York-based Adams and Seattle-based Thomas that began after the two artists exhibited work alongside each other in a group show at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2017. For this exhibition\, Thomas draws upon the role of media and fairytales in shaping social expectations and her own conception of self. She is presenting all new work\, including an immersive installation conceived as a ‘transformation room’ and a series of new cut-paper portraits of friends and colleagues that riff on the concept of the royal court. \n  \nThank you to ArtTable’s Northwest Chapter Leaders Jessica Landau\, Judith Rinehart\, and Gina Broze for organizing this program.\n \n\nImage: Barbara Earl Thomas. Schahbaz initially trained in Indo-Persian miniature painting at Lahore’s National College of Arts\, and later earned a Master’s in Painting from Pratt Institute in New York. Her work addresses issues of personal freedom\, destruction\, sexuality and censorship by unveiling the beauty\, fragility and strength of the female form. \nHer solo shows include Dreaming (De Buck Gallery 2020)\, In Solitude (De Buck Gallery\, 2020)\, The Garden (Spring/Break Art Show\, 2018)\, Hiba Schahbaz: Self-Portraits (Project for Empty Space\, 2017)\, Hanged With Roses (Thierry Goldberg Gallery\, 2015)\, and In Memory (Noire Gallery\, 2012). Solomon Residency at the Tang Museum. She teaches miniature painting at the Art Students League in New York\, and her work is held in private collections around the world. \n(Bio adapted from De Buck Gallery press release\, 2020) \nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. It creates a found and fabricated environment that transforms the mundane into a contemplative experience through color\, interior design\, lighting\, and the elusive euphoria of vacant and transitory spaces. Neon Saltwater’s uncanny interiors become a life-size fantasy set\, a minimalist stage for Brian Sanchez’s paintings and sculptures. The rich paintings use an emotive palette that responds to the lighting design and activates the pervasive loneliness buzzing between the roomscapes. Energy Drink makes abstraction tangible. \nThe Museum of Museums‘ mission is to increase the artist population of Seattle and inspire our local arts ecosystem through exhibition\, education\, and conversation about the role of the artist\, philanthropist and collector. It resides in a building originally designed by NBBJ in 1946\, and was formerly occupied by Swedish Hospital Women’s Health Center. The museum and gift shop pay homage to the former site in many ways\, and MOM founding donors Ruth True\, Barbara Malone\, Alison Milliman speak to the importance of women as philanthropists and collectors in Seattle and beyond. \nGreg Lundgren is an artist\, curator and arts entrepreneur. He is the founder of Vital 5 Productions\, Artist For a Work Free America (AFWFA)\, Lundgren Monuments and a member of the artist trio PDL. He co-owns The Hideout and Vito’s\, and is the founder and director of Museum of Museum\, a new contemporary art center in Seattle. \nJennifer Roberts is an art collector and all around extraordinary individual. She is currently on the board of On The Boards\, and is a past trustee of the Henry Art Gallery and Villa Academy. She also owns Old Chaser Farm on Vashon where she manages their beautiful farm share. \nKnee High Stocking Co. is a minority\, female\, family-owned and operated business born and bred in Seattle\, WA. Sisters/Partners: Pamela C. and Michelle V. have served up Prohibition-era cocktails and house-made shrubs\, plus a menu of Filipino-inspired American food since 2017. \nMenu Options: \n\nPlate (Vegetarian Option Available)\n\nLumpia (select Beef\, Pork\, Beyond meat)\nAsian Chicken Drummettes\nPotatas bravas\n\n+homemade sauces\n\n\n\n\nCocktail/shrub:\n\nThai one on (vodka\, allspice dram\, basil)\nCalimansari ginger shrub W/ lemon and soda\n\n\n\nThank you to ArtTable Northwest Chapter Leaders for organizing this event.\n \n\nImage: Museum of Museums (MOM)
