In 2008\, Ahlberg Yohe received her PhD from the University of New Mexico; her dissertation was a focus on the social life of weaving in contemporary Navajo life. Along with Teri Greeves\, Ahlberg Yohe is the co-curator of Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists. At MIA\, Ahlberg Yohe seeks new initiatives to expand understanding and new curatorial practices of historical and contemporary Native art. \n  \nChristina E. Burke is Curator of Native American Art at Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa\, OK. Her work focuses on collaborative projects with Native artists\, from collections research to exhibition and program development. She is interested in how Indigenous people record and present stories through visual\, literary\, and performing arts. She’s served on several boards including the Native American Art Studies Association (NAASA) and the Advisory Board for  Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists. \n  \nTeri Greeves (Kiowa) is a contemporary beadwork artist\, recognized for pictorial narrative works. Alternatively\, you will be prompted to download and install Zoom when you click a join link.\nFor further instruction on how to use Zoom\, see here.\n\n\nAbout Julia Kwon \nJulia Kwon sews interpretative bojagi—Korean object-wrapping cloths historically created since the early Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910)—to comment on the objectification of Asiatic female bodies and examine the complexities of constructing identity within the context of globalism\, cultural hybridity\, and intersectionality. She earned her M.F.A. at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University and B.A. in Studio Art at Georgetown University. She was also a participant at the Chautauqua School of Art residency program. Her work has been exhibited nationally including art galleries such as Hartnett Gallery of the University of Rochester and Torpedo Factory Art Center. Her work has been featured and reviewed internationally including in television programs such as PBS’s WETA Arts series that showcases the creative arts scene in the Greater Washington DC area as well as one of the major Korean national television networks SBS’s international news. Kwon won awards such as the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University’s Traveling Fellowship as well as the artist residencies at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity\, Vermont Studio Center\, NARS Foundation\, Montgomery College\, and Textile Arts Center. She presented artist lectures and workshops at Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, The Phillips Collection\, Georgetown University\, Lehigh University\, University of Rochester\, Emerson College\, Montgomery College\, among others.\n \nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. The Pollock-Krasner Foundation has been a leader in providing grants enabling emerging and established artists to focus on their work. She is the dean of students and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts (Department of Visual Culture and the Artistic Research) in Warsaw and Warsaw University. She is also a lecturer at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw. For many years she conducted research on Polish art of the 1970s\, particularly advocating performance and video art. In 2010 she established the non-profit organization Arton Foundation. Its main activity is the elaboration of private archives of artists. Kuźmicz is the author and editor of many books\, such as “The Workshop of The Film Form” (2016\, co-edited with Łukasz Ronduda\, published by Sternberg Press) and “History of Performance in Poland” and many monographs of Polish artists (like Zdzisław Jurkiewicz\, Ludmiła Popiel and many others) based on her research in private archives. She has curated many exhibitions in Poland and abroad\, most recently: “Her Own Way – Female Artists and the Moving Image in Art in Poland”\, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and the monographic exhibition of Barbara Kozłowska “You Can See It All Anywhere” (2020\, Muzeum of Contemporary Art\, Wrocław). She is also the curator of the film festival “Arton Review”\, devoted to the forgotten forerunners of Polish avant-garde film and video. The 2017 edition took place in Whitechapel Gallery in London and in 2020\, the film festival was part of the Oberhausen Shortfilm Festival. Kuźmicz was the coordinator of an international art project “Forgotten Heritage – European Avant-Garde Art Online” dedicated to the re-discovering marginalized avant-garde artists from Poland\, Croatia\, Belgium and Estonia. In 2017 she also established Edward Hartwig Foundation\, the organization devoted to the developing and dissemination of legacy and art on Edward Hartwig\, the key Polish photographer. Currently she is the main coordinator and the curator of the project “Not Yet Written Stories: Women Artists Archives On-line”\, supported by Creative Europe\, in collaboration with the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Arts in Riga and the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Ljubljana. \n\nImage: Marika Kuźmicz \nAre you interested in participating in an AT Connect program? Before joining The Morgan in 2016\, she was Assistant Curator of Painting and Sculpture at SFMOMA\, where she helped organize the retrospective Bruce Conner: It’s All True. She also curated the museum’s inaugural galleries of California art. Since arriving at The Morgan\, she has curated By Any Means: Contemporary Drawings from The Morgan (2019) and Drawing the Curtain: Maurice Sendak’s Designs for Opera and Ballet (2019). She has published essays on Bruce Conner\, Richard Diebenkorn\, Paul McCarthy\, Allen Ruppersberg\, and Andy Warhol\, among others. Rachel holds a PhD in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University. \n \nAs Senior Curator of Modern Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Carol S. Eliel is involved with exhibitions and acquisitions of historical and living artists. Current and upcoming projects include Betye Saar: Call and Response (at LACMA earlier this year\, on view now at The Morgan and traveling through 2021)\, which looks at the arc of Saar’s career through the lens of her sketchbooks; and Light\, Space\, Surface: Southern California Art from LACMA’s Collection (2021-22\, traveling)\, both with publications. The Saar catalogue received the 2020 Publication Award for Excellence by the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC). She previously co-organized Moholy-Nagy: Future Present (2016-17) with the Guggenheim and the Art Institute of Chicago. Carol has recently spearheaded acquisitions by Betye Saar\, Fred Eversley\, Maren Hassinger\, Mildred Howard\, Lari Pittman\, Alison Saar\, and others. She conceived and produced the core twenty of LACMA’s Artists on Art series of short\, web-based videos featuring artists speaking about a specific work in LACMA’s encyclopedic collections. She started at LACMA as a curatorial assistant\, having received her BA from Yale and her MA and PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts\, NYU. In 1999 Carol was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government. She is an associate of the W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute at the Hutchins Center at Harvard University. She was recently a guest curator of The Phillips Collection exhibit\, “Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition.” The exhibit presents the works of 20th to 21st century African American artists alongside the examples of 20th-century art that inspired those American artists. Childs was also a curator at the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland. \nLaura Roulet is an independent curator and writer in the DC metropolitan area and specializes in contemporary and Latin American art. She has organized exhibitions in Mexico\, Puerto Rico and the U.S. including at the OAS Art Museum of the Americas\, the American University Museum\, the Mexican Cultural Institute\, Hillyer Art Space\, WPA\, Arlington Arts Center\, and the DC Art Center. Roulet is a frequent contributor to Sculpture magazine. Her other publications include many catalog essays\, encyclopedia entries\, articles in American Art\, Art Journal and Art Nexus. In the fall of 2020\, Brentwood Arts Exchange exhibited her most recent exhibition\, “Mothering in a World Turned Upside Down.” The exhibit focused on visual embodiments of motherhood during a time of social\, physical\, and economic uncertainty. \nSarah Tanguy is a Washington\, DC-based independent curator and arts writer. In Israel\, she worked as a curator at the Haifa Museum of Art and has organized public programs and curated numerous exhibitions in leading museums and various cultural venues. \nRotem is the co-founder and co-director of REACTIK\, an International Erasmus+ Jean-Monnet Network\, researching EU Cultural Diplomacy and Policy. Rotem served on the International Council of the renowned television series Art21\, the Israeli Lottery Committee for the Arts\, the International Exposure dance festival\, and DocAviv film festival. \nAbout Artis \nArtis is an independent nonprofit organization that supports contemporary artists from Israel whose work addresses aesthetic\, social and political questions to inspire reflection and debate. Artis was founded in 2004 by philanthropist Rivka Saker with the goal of amplifying international recognition of artists from Israel. Starting off as a series of public events timed with New York’s Armory Show\, the organization’s scope expanded to include programs that invest in artists and cultural exchange. Her subjects\, largely drawn from her lifelong practice of self portraiture\, inhabit a dreamlike\, all-female world. Schahbaz initially trained in Indo-Persian miniature painting at Lahore’s National College of Arts\, and later earned a Master’s in Painting from Pratt Institute in New York. Her work addresses issues of personal freedom\, destruction\, sexuality and censorship by unveiling the beauty\, fragility and strength of the female form. \nHer solo shows include Dreaming (De Buck Gallery 2020)\, In Solitude (De Buck Gallery\, 2020)\, The Garden (Spring/Break Art Show\, 2018)\, Hiba Schahbaz: Self-Portraits (Project for Empty Space\, 2017)\, Hanged With Roses (Thierry Goldberg Gallery\, 2015)\, and In Memory (Noire Gallery\, 2012). Schahbaz has participated in numerous group exhibitions\, including a recent show curated by Jasmine Wahi in Tokyo\, “all the women. in me. are tired.”\, at THE CLUB\, as well as exhibitions at NiU Museum of Art\, The Untitled Space\, and Center for Book Arts; and has shown at art fairs such as Pulse Art Fair\, Untitled Art Fair\, Art Fair Cologne\, and Vienna Fair. \nPublications like Vice\, Hyperallergic\, The Huffington Post\, Coveteur\, Vogue\, NY Magazine\, Art Critical\, ArtForum\, Bomb Mag\, Paper\, and others have written about Hiba’s work. Schahbaz has curated painting exhibitions in Pakistan and India\, and she was an artist-in-residence at Mass MoCA\, The Wassaic Project\, Vermont Studio Center\, and the Alfred Z. Solomon Residency at the Tang Museum. Not just a place to see famous Americans\, the museum explores identity as a social construct that has been shaped in equal measure by opportunity and ability\, prejudice and fear. By taking a cross-disciplinary approach that merges the traditional forms of painting\, sculpture\, drawing and printmaking with poetry\, installation art\, video and performance\, Sajet aims to bring history alive. \nBefore her current appointment\, Sajet was the president and CEO of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, the vice president and deputy director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, and the director of corporate relations at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Before arriving in the United States with her family in 1997\, she served first as curator and then director of two Australian art museums from 1989 – 1995. \nBorn in Nigeria\, raised in Australia\, and a citizen of the Netherlands\, Sajet brings a global perspective to the position. She earned a master’s degree in art history from Bryn Mawr College\, a master’s degree in business administration from Melbourne University Business School in Australia\, a bachelor’s degree in art history from Melbourne University\, and a graduate diploma in Museum studies from Deakin University in Australia. She has completed arts leadership training at the Harvard Business School\, the Getty Institute and National Arts Strategies. \nIn addition to 20 years of arts management experience\, Sajet has written a number of scholarly publications\, curated exhibitions and spoken at academic symposia around the world. Significant milestones throughout Hazard’s career include producing more than 75 exhibitions in turn providing opportunities to more than 200 artists\, introducing the first outdoor mural project and festival in the Northern Virginia region\, and partnering with the Smithsonian American Art Museum in leading the conference\, State of Art 5/DC. \nJaynelle Hazard relocated to Washington\, DC from New York in 2017 where she earned a Master of Arts degree at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. She currently serves as the Co-Chair for the Washington\, DC Chapter of Sotheby’s Institute of Art Alumni and Chair of the Faith Flanagan Fellowship for ArtTable’s DC Chapter. \nAs the Executive Director and Curator of Tephra ICA\, Jaynelle builds a critically engaged practice by introducing methods to advance scholarship; extending reach in interdisciplinary experimentation of contemporary art and ideas; as well as engaging audiences of all backgrounds and identities. Carr will be joining us to present her book and take part in engaging conversation. \nSara Tyson Hallowell: Pioneer Curator and Art Agent in the Gilded Age\n\nThis biography tells the story of Philadelphia-born Sara Tyson Hallowell (1846-1924). Hallowell made her reputation in Chicago in the 1880’s organizing exhibitions for that city’s Inter-state Industrial Expositions. Impressed with her knowledge of art and the art market\, Bertha and Potter Palmer sought her advice. Hallowell’s enthusiasm for the work of Monet\, Renoir\, Sisley\, and Pissarro led them to form one of the earliest collections of French Impressionism in America\, notable examples of which are today at the Art Institute of Chicago. \nDisappointed that her gender prevented her from becoming director of art at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition\, Hallowell nevertheless created a critically successful exhibition for this mammoth fair. Following its close\, Hallowell went to live in France. From 1894 to 1914\, she selected paintings of American artists living abroad for annual exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago. McNeil is a nationally recognized award-winning strategic thinker and creative entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in performing arts and education. She leads with the intention of creating resources\, removing roadblocks and designing roadmaps to make arts and culture accessible to all. Alison’s work has addressed the blind spots that perpetuate the disparities in funding\, hiring\, and operational practices with and for Black\, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) arts administrators. Alison’s work is rooted in arts advocacy and is at the intersection between philanthropy\, strategy and justice. She has led multi-million-dollar change efforts\, therefore directly informing policy\, grant-making\, and strategic partnerships. \nHer efforts have fortified leadership and secured grants\, and as a result expanded equity and access for women\, emerging leaders and communities of color. Every effort she’s contributed to is in service to the communities noted above including launching McNeil Creative Enterprises and co-founding Third Eye Cultural Collaborative\, Women of Color in the Arts (WOCA)\, and the Maynor Biggers Artist Fund. \nAlison’s talent has resulted in accolades both inside and outside of the arts and culture sector. In 2014\, she and the BID team began to delve into public art as a placemaking initiative for the commercial district. They launched D.C.’s first free\, curated\, outdoor Light Art exhibition\, Georgetown GLOW. GLOW started as a three-night experience with five art installations. It has since grown over six years to a month-long exhibition with 11 installations in 2019. \nAfter a pause in 2020 due to the pandemic\, GLOW is back in spring and summer 2021 as a two-part\, six-month exhibition with eight installations featuring many local artists. In addition to working on public art initiatives\, Nancy and her team oversee marketing strategy\, events and communications to promote Georgetown as a destination to local\, national and international visitors. Nancy believes in the accessibility and power of public art\, and hopes that BID can be a catalyst for increasing opportunities for all. One of her most memorable public art experiences is Desert X 2019 in the Coachella Valley. One of her favorite museums is the Honolulu Museum of Art. \nNancy has over 20 years of experience in marketing – primarily in the retail and real estate industries. Prior to joining the BID\, she served in marketing leadership roles for Nordstrom’s East Coast region. There she worked to launch Nordstrom stores in over 20 new markets; The Mills Corporation (national retail REIT acquired by Simon Property Group) – leading the branding for the regional mall portfolio; and Duke Realty Corporation (national office REIT) – overseeing marketing of office and industrial properties in four East Coast markets. Nancy has an MBA in Marketing from the George Washington University\, and currently serves on the Board of STABLE Arts in Eckington\, D.C. Originally from Honolulu\, Hawaii\, Nancy lives in Woodley Park\, D.C. with her husband and two silly beagles. \n  \nAbout Deirdre MacWilliams\n \nDeirdre MacWilliams brings passion\, effective oversight and management skills to large- and small-scale public art projects. Since 2005\, Deirdre has collaborated with design professionals\, community members\, government colleagues and artists to develop public art for Washington\, D.C. and Arlington\, Virginia. \nDeirdre serves as public art project manager for Arlington’s nationally renowned Public Art program. She develops and manages County-initiated projects and advises on various public art and design enhancement requests. Prior to joining Arlington\, Deirdre worked as the public art coordinator for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) and for Weitzman Studios.  \nDeirdre also works independently on creative projects and initiatives.  She has been the curator of Georgetown GLOW since 2014. She was the co-curator for What’s Going on Voices of Shaw in 2016 and in 2015 she was a project manager for Finding a Line\, working with local artist and skateboarder Ben Ashworth and the Kennedy Center. In 2014\, Deirdre was the curator for the Foggy Bottom Sculpture Biennial and in 2014 and 2012 was the producer for DCCAH’s temporary public art program 5×5.   \nDeirdre received her BA in Art History from The George Washington University and an MA from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Art Market Studies\, and currently serves on the board of Washington Project for the Arts. Originally from Cold Spring Harbor\, N.Y.\, she lives on Capitol Hill\, D.C. with her husband\, four-year-old son and super sweet Pitbull mix.  \nAbout The Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID)\nThe Georgetown BID is a city chartered private non-profit organization who focuses on managing the commercial district of the historic neighborhood of Georgetown. It is one of eleven BIDs in Washington\, D.C.\, and the fourth largest\, with an annual budget of $4.5 million and 850+ business members. Membership consists of local\, national and international retailers\, restaurateurs\, real estate developers and corporations. The BID’s property owners and merchants established\, funded and founded the BID in 1999. They work to protect and enhance the accessibility\, attractiveness and overall appeal of Georgetown. The BID is governed by a 24-member Board of Directors and works with city agencies of the District of Columbia on issues of concern to the business district. Join today! \n \n  \n\nAbout Allison Nance\nAllison Nance has over 15 years of leadership experience in arts non-profit management for the visual arts. She is deeply dedicated to supporting and empowering artists as leaders\, and elevating cultural exchange opportunities both abroad and locally. In addition to co-founding and curating Plain Sight\, Allison is the Managing Director of The Nicholson Project\, an Artist Residency Program and exhibition space in Washington\, DC. She is also the curator of exhibitions at Culture House DC. \nPreviously\, Allison was the Director of Hillyer Art Space (IA&A at Hillyer) from 2013-2020 where she facilitated a robust schedule of artist selection and mentorship\, organizing and curating over 30 exhibitions and 85+ public programs annually. She fostered initiatives and key partnerships throughout DC and the surrounding region and broadened artist-focused projects between Washington\, DC\, and international counterparts. Allison currently serves on the Alexandria Commission for the Arts and the Washington Sculptors Group Advisory Board. She is the Programs Chair for ArtTable’s DC Chapter Executive Committee. \nAbout Teddy Rodger\nTeddy Rodger specializes in program development within the cultural sector. She delivers high-quality and thoughtful initiatives and events that connect communities around the world through the arts. She is well-versed in launching large-scale and internationally-focused arts events\, fellowships\, and collaborative projects that elevate organizational mission and presence on a global scale. In addition to co-founding and curating Plain Sight\, Teddy is a Program Manager for the Goethe Institute. There she manages Shaping the Past\, a partnership between the Goethe-Institut\, Monument Lab\, and the German Federal Agency for Civic Education. The partnership connects memory workers in North America and Germany to deliver public programs and a multi-city\, international exhibition. \nShe was the Public Engagement and Events Manager at IA&A at Hillyer before its pandemic related closure in May 2020. Before that\, Teddy worked as the Programs Manager at Georgetown’s The Lab for Global Performance and Politics\, as well as the Producer of their international Cross-Currents festival. Amongst others\, previous experience includes Assistant to Playwrights Charles L. This past February\, she joined Apple as Head of Programming and is working on locally-impactful cultural programs and initiatives based out of Carnegie Library. \nPreviously Nicole was the Director of Arts Programs at Halcyon\, an incubator for socially-conscious and civic-minded artists and social entrepreneurs. In 2017 she helped to launch Halcyon’s Arts Lab Fellowship program\, which supports emerging artists and creators seeking to hone their artistic and entrepreneurial practices. Prior to her work at Halcyon\, Nicole managed the Hamiltonian Artists Fellowship program. She leads the BID’s urban planning\, creative place-keeping\, public art\, and design projects in DC’s central business district. Karyn previously served as Arlington Art Center’s Curator and Director of Exhibitions\, conceiving of and delivering a year-round exhibition schedule and public art program. Prior to that\, Karyn spent more than a decade building relationships with the region’s artists and arts community at CulturalDC and at ConnerSmith Gallery. Karyn graduated from The Catholic University of America with a BA in Art History. She later received a MA in Art and Museum Studies from Georgetown University. She has served as a lecturer at The Catholic University of America and as an adjunct professor at George Mason University. \nAbout Social Spaces\nSocial Spaces is a community-focused initiative to bring people together in a safe and distanced manner along Pennsylvania Avenue west of the White House. In addition to an overview of the exhibition\, among the topics to be discussed during the tour will be new insights gained after spending time with the works assembled for the exhibition\, now that the show has reached its second venue; current politics of exhibition organization\, challenges and opportunities for representing multiple voices/perspectives\, and enriching visitors’ understanding of Alma Thomas\, her work\, and her impact on the art world in DC and beyond. Everett\, art historian\, museum educator\, curator\, and children’s book author\, and ArtTable member is an Associate Professor in Art History in the Department of Art at Howard University\, Washington\, D.C. She formerly served as Associate Dean for the Division of Fine Arts\, Director of the Howard University Gallery of Art\, and Chairperson of the Department of Art. Everett received her Ph.D. from George Mason University\, Fairfax\, Virginia\, MA in Art History from Howard\, and a BA from Spelman College\, where she majored in Studio Art. She is currently co-organizing a symposium\, “Alma W. Thomas and David Driskell: Journeys in Art\,” with the Howard University Department of Art and the Phillips Collection to coincide with Alma Thomas and David Driskell exhibitions on view at the Phillips\, November 13\, 2021. \nArtTable member Renee Maurer is Associate Curator\, The Phillips Collection\, and coordinating curator for the Phillips’s presentation of the Alma W. Thomas: Everything is Beautiful exhibition. Other exhibitions she has coordinated include Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition\, guest curated by Adrienne Childs in 2020; A Modern Vision: European Paintings from The Phillips Collection and its tour (2017–2020); Toulouse-Lautrec Illustrates the Belle Époque (2017); Gauguin to Picasso: Masterworks from Switzerland (2016); American Moments: Photographs from The Phillips Collection (2015); Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life: 1928–1945 (2013); and Jasper Johns: Variations on a Theme (2012). Prior to working at the Phillips\, she was a research assistant at the National Gallery of Art. She received her BA from Dickinson College and her MA from George Washington University. \nAbout the exhibition\nAlma W. Thomas: Everything Is Beautiful provides a fresh perspective on the artist’s dynamic long life (1891-1978) and multifaceted career that was defined by constant creativity. This major retrospective traces her journey from semi-rural Georgia to Washington\, DC\, to become the first Black woman given a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art at age 80. Through artworks and archival materials\, this exhibition demonstrates how Thomas’s wide-reaching artistic practices extended far beyond her studio. It helped shape every facet of her life—from community service to teaching to gardening. \nEverything Is Beautiful contextualizes Thomas’s art and life within her creative community\, delving into her association with Howard University\, American University\, and the Barnett Aden Gallery\, which she helped co-found. Some of her works are placed alongside examples by her friends and contemporaries\, such as Loïs Mailou Jones and Morris Louis\, who also helped shape the DC art scene.
