Prior to working at the Phillips\, she was a research assistant at the National Gallery of Art. She received her BA from Dickinson College and her MA from George Washington University. \nAbout the exhibition\nAlma W. Thomas: Everything Is Beautiful provides a fresh perspective on the artist’s dynamic long life (1891-1978) and multifaceted career that was defined by constant creativity. This major retrospective traces her journey from semi-rural Georgia to Washington\, DC\, to become the first Black woman given a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art at age 80. Through artworks and archival materials\, this exhibition demonstrates how Thomas’s wide-reaching artistic practices extended far beyond her studio. It helped shape every facet of her life—from community service to teaching to gardening. \nEverything Is Beautiful contextualizes Thomas’s art and life within her creative community\, delving into her association with Howard University\, American University\, and the Barnett Aden Gallery\, which she helped co-found. Some of her works are placed alongside examples by her friends and contemporaries\, such as Loïs Mailou Jones and Morris Louis\, who also helped shape the DC art scene. The exhibition offers an intimate look at this inspiring cultural icon who used her imagination and ingenuity to lead a rich and beautiful life. \nClick here to read more about the exhibition. \n  \nThank you to Renee Maurer\, Associate Curator\, and Erica Harper\, Educator\, The Phillips Collection.\n \n\nImages: \n\nAlma Thomas\, Pansies for Washington\, 1969\, acrylic on canvas\, National Gallery of Art\, Corcoran Collection (Gift of Vincent Melzac)\nDr. Gwendolyn Everett\nRenee Maurer\nIda Jervis\, Alma Thomas at Home\, 1968\, gelatin silver print. Getting There Cody Gallery of Marymount University is located inside Ballston Center at 1000 North Glebe Road\, 2nd Floor. Street parking and Capital Bikeshare are available. The gallery is located near the Metroline Orange: Ballston-MU. \n  \n\n  \n\nAbout the Artists\nMilan-based artists Sara Goldschmied (b.1975\, Arzignano) and Eleonora Chiari (b.1971\, Rome) have been working together as the artist-duo Goldschmied & Chiari since 2001. Sara and Eleonora met in the late 1990s through a shared interest in photography and feminism activism. Their shared interests soon led to joint art projects and a remarkable two-decade-long partnership. They have earned widespread respect and recognition\, both in Italy and internationally\, through their innovative use of photography\, video\, performance\, and installations. Much of their work draws conceptually from philosophy\, social studies\, and their historical Italian background. Their dynamic of working as a duo fundamentally impacts their approach to every project. They state that their most essential tool “…is our relationship as an artist duo because it feeds our art practice\, for example\, so that we see multiple sides of one issue.” Magnifica was organized by International Arts & Artists in partnership with the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington\, DC\, in collaboration with Marymount University. This project is supported by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism under the 2019 Italian Council Program. \nAbout the Exhibition\nThis exhibition is a collaboration by many ArtTable Members of the DC chapter\, all of whom will be in attendance. They are Allison Nance\, Curator; Caitlin Berry\, Cody Gallery Director; Maria Sancho-Arroyo\, Catalog Essayist; Ruth Abrahams\, Catalog Designer. Funds raised from this program will support the DC chapter locally\, including our intern\, who receives a stipend for her work coordinating chapter activities and communications. Your contribution makes a real impact on the growth and mentorship opportunities in our chapter\, thank you! \nIn Magnifica\, Goldschmied & Chiari bring together new work from their iconic Untitled Views series\, stylized with billowing pink and purple shades of smoke reminiscent of abstract blooms\, deconstructing the very notion of portraying an idea\, a face\, a sensation\, an architectural space. Three vase sculptures in pink blown Murano glass debut in this exhibition; the anthropomorphic shapes of these Magnifica vases are sensual and dangerous\, drawing inspiration from carnivorous pitcher plants in deep reds and purples\, and from lipstick kisses in bold pinks. The artists worked with craftsmen from the Italian island of Murano to create these vases\, a process which involved breathing and blowing\, thus\, a human mouth has created a mouth-like vase\, which conceptually blows the colored smoke integral to their Untitled Views. \n  \nThank you to Allison Nance and Caitlin Berry from ArtTable’s DC Chapter for organizing this program. \n\nImage: Left: Eleonora Chiari and Sara Goldschmied. This exhibition surveys her body of work from the 1950s to the 2010s for the first time\, spotlighting her inventive approach to printmaking\, painting\, and weaving as well as her signature practice of combining distinctive materials and artistic techniques. Amos’ works investigate identity and privilege while unsettling the lines between figuration and abstraction\, craft and fine art\, beauty and power. \n\nImage: Emma Amos (1937-2020)\, Pool Lady\, 1980; etching\, aquatint and stencil; Gift of the Collectors Committee; courtesy the National Gallery of Art // Emma Amos (1937-2020)\, Never (for Vivian Browne)\, 1993\, Acrylic on canvas with African fabric borders\, 45 × 34 inches; Amos Family\, courtesy RYAN LEE Gallery \nThank you to Shelley Langdale\, ArtTable DC Chapter Programs Co-chair\, for organizing this program.

Her recent projects include the exhibition and book Hung Liu: Portraits of Promised Lands (Yale University Press\, 2021) and The Obama Portraits (Princeton University Press\, 2020). In 2015\, Moss initiated IDENTIFY\, the NPG’s first performance art series featuring internally recognized artists\, including Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons\, James Luna\, and Jeffrey Gibson. Her upcoming exhibitions are One Life: Maya Lin (September 2022) and Kinship\, with curators Leslie Ureña\, Robyn Asleson\, and Taína Caragol (October 2022). \nAbout the exhibition\nHung Liu (1948–2021) was a contemporary Chinese-born American artist\, whose multilayered paintings established new frameworks for understanding portraiture in relation to time\, memory\, and history. Often sourcing her subjects from photographs\, Liu elevated overlooked individuals by amplifying the stories of those who have historically been invisible or unheard. Having lived through war\, political revolution\, exile\, and displacement\, she offered a complex picture of an Asian Pacific American experience. Her portraits speak powerfully to those seeking a better life\, in the United States and elsewhere. Hung Liu: Portraits of Promised Lands will be the first major exhibition of the artist’s work on the East Coast. This is also the first time that a museum will focus on Liu’s portraiture. \n\nImage: Hung Liu (American\, born China 1948\, died California\, 2021)\, Resident Alien\, 1988\, Oil on canvas; Collection of the San Jose Museum of Art; gift of the Lipman Family Foundation; Dorothy Moss and Hung Liu \nThank you to Shelley Langdale\, Curator and Head of Modern Prints and Drawings\, National Gallery of Art (and ArtTable DC Chapter programs co-chair) and Concetta Duncan\, Head of Communications\, National Portrait Gallery for organizing this program.
