It was founded by artists in 1974 and has been housed since 1976 in a historic school building. The facility includes nine exhibition galleries\, working studios for twelve artists\, and two classrooms. \nAbout the Exhibitions\nLaunched in 2019\, Assembly is the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington’s biennial exhibition program\, which highlights the material and conceptual trends being explored by contemporary artists in the present moment. The artists in Assembly 2022: Time and Attention demonstrate a deep commitment to process and craft\, which is channeled through materials and into research. Through these carefully considered approaches\, they are creating work that speaks to the present moment in ways that feel both urgent and timeless. In what feels like a moment of ongoing\, even perpetual\, crisis they bring this focused approach to issues that are fundamental to contemporary American life\, including questions of identity\, history\, immigration\, place\, and belonging. \nLet Them Kids Be Kids\, a solo exhibition by MoCA Arlington resident artist Lex Mari\, uses the playground as a framework with which to examine the joys of Black childhood and the ways in which issues of race and equity are inscribed on the site. Employing images from her personal life to examine these ideas\, Lex Marie’s newest paintings and installations address the issue of adultification bias as she makes the case that all children have a right to innocence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nImages: \n\n\n\n\nMandy Cano Villalobos\, Bluer Skies for Brazen Hips\, 2022\, Installation view from Assembly 2022: Time & Attention at MoCA Arlington. SUMMARY:*FULL* New York\, NY | Dia Chelsea Chryssa Exhibition Tour with Megan Holly Witko
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Chryssa & New York at Dia Chelsea led by exhibition curator Megan Holly Witko. Co-organized by Dia Art Foundation and the Menil Collection\, Chryssa & New York is the first comprehensive survey of works by Greek-born artist Chryssa (1933–2013) to take place in North America since 1982. A leading figure of the New York art world in the 1950s and ’60s\, Chryssa developed an innovative approach to activating sculptural surfaces through subtle manipulations of light and shadow. Pathbreaking in its use of signage\, text\, and neon\, her vastly under-recognized body of work bridges Pop\, Conceptual\, and Minimalist ideas of art making. This exhibition focuses on works from these decades through to the early 1970s\, bringing together Chryssa’s deeply formal concerns and critical interest in exploring the United States following World War II. \n\n\n\nDIA Chelsea 537 W 22nd St\, New York\, NY 10011 \n\n\n\nThis tour is open to ArtTable members and $15 for guests. Not a member? Join today! \n\n\n\n* REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS FULL WITH A WAITING LIST \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Participants\n\n\n\nMegan Holly Witko is external curator at Dia Art Foundation and currently working on an exhibition of the artist Chryssa (1933 – 2013). She recently organized presentations of works by Marian Zazeela at Dia:Beacon\, as well as Keith Sonnier and Jacqueline Humphries at the Dan Flavin Art Institute in Bridgehampton\, NY. She was assistant curator of François Morellet at Dia:Chelsea in New York (2017–18)\, as well as Robert Ryman (2015-16)\, and La Monte Young\, Marian Zazeela and Jung Hee Choi’s Dia 15 VI 13 545 West 22 Street Dream House (2015). SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | BreakfastTable with Mary Early\, HEMPHILL Artworks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning conversation and gallery tour with Mary Early\, Director of HEMPHILL Artworks\, featuring the exhibition: Prints & Works on Paper.Prints and Works on Paper (March 18 – May 6\, 2023)The 19 artists presented in Prints & Works on Paper worked from the mid-1930s through 2014. While the work spans almost a century\, it was made within the shared social and political context of the Black experience in America. These artists did not perceive a line where activism ended and art began. Believing that pictures could make a difference\, they were invested in advocating for justice\, empowerment\, and community through education; the intentionality of creating editioned prints in a workshop setting reflects this dedication. Printmaking facilitated a wider distribution of their messages\, allowing artists to be deliberate about connection and reaching a larger audience. Imagery portraying a rich social life offered viewers positive self-representation\, verity\, and aspiration for the future. The private collection of 38 works passionately assembled over a 30-year period\, is honest in content and impressive in technique\, both captivating the audience and effectively conveying the artworks’ significance. By boldly broadcasting their identities while the art world was systematically prejudiced\, the artists in Prints & Works on Paper documented a difficult past and visualized a brighter future.Ron Adams\, Benny Andrews\, Romare Bearden\, John Biggers\, Elizabeth Catlett\, Robert Colescott\, Allan Rohan Crite\, Aaron Douglas\, Sam Gilliam\, Palmer Hayden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Norman Lewis\, Lois Mailou Jones\, Alison Saar\, Charles Sebree\, Renée Stout\, James Lesesne Wells\, Charles White\, Hale Woodruff \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – complimentary\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $10\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? She has a particular interest in public art and community engagement\, the materials and processes of contemporary sculpture\, and professional development for emerging and under-represented artists. \n\n\n\nABOUT HEMPHILL \n\n\n\nHEMPHILL Artworks opened in Washington DC in September\, 1993. The exhibition schedule features contemporary art ranging in media from emerging to mid-career and established artists. In addition to these shows\, the gallery mounts exhibitions of historically-significant artwork and socially relevant subjects. The diversity of this schedule is designed to showcase important talent and provide artwork that appeals to a broad range of interests. \n\n\n\nFrom its beginnings\, HEMPHILL has advised corporate and private collectors. This initial client base was built upon contacts and experiences gained in academia\, with private galleries\, and with architectural and design firms. HEMPHILL’s consulting and advisory work has expanded to include companies and individuals worldwide. HEMPHILL offers collectors the chance to experience a broad range of aesthetic experiences both through the gallery exhibition program and through private viewing opportunities. It also provides an opportunity to be directly involved in the artists’ community as well as the creative process. \n\n\n\nSpecial events include the ongoing ART TALKS series\, artist book signings\, and charitable vents for area nonprofits. Begun in 1998\, the ART TALKS series includes educational lectures on topics such as collecting for beginners\, artist talks\, and panel discussions on issues in contemporary art. In 2020\, HEMPHILL inaugurated a new gallery space in Washington’s historic Mount Vernon Square neighborhood. Featuring an open gallery floor plan and glass partitions that invite guests into the office area\, the design allows for increased interaction and conversation. As we enter 2023\, the third year in this new space and the third year of a global pandemic\, we continue to welcome first-time visitors.

SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Tour of "Philip Guston Now" at the National Gallery of Art with Nathalie Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special private tour of Phillip Guston Now exhibit at the National Gallery of Art with Senior Educator Nathalie Ryan. The exhibition charts the 50-year career of one of America’s most influential modern artists through more than 150 paintings and drawings. Renowned in his time and in ours\, Guston’s work continues to resonate\, attract\, and provoke\, raising crucial questions about the relationship of art to beauty and brutality\, freedom and doubt\, politics and the imagination.Nathalie A. DESCRIPTION:Join co-curators Taína Caragol and Kate Lemay for an exclusive tour of “1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions” at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery! “That single year launched the United States on a path that would end with the annexation of Hawaii\, intervention in Cuba\, and the invasions of Puerto Rico\, the Philippines and Guam—profound geopolitical changes resulting from U.S. domination during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) and the Spanish-American War (April to August 1898)\, now often referred to as the War of 1898.”—Maya Wei-Haas\, The Smithsonian Magazine. \n\n\n\nPortraiture is part of how we represent ourselves\, and how we memorialize our historic public figures from the heroic to the problematic. 125 years after this extensive series of conflicts\, the U.S. continues to grapple with its imperial legacy. The Smithsonian exhibition revisits these representations from multiple\, culturally-complex perspectives\, “and recognizes that the Smithsonian Institution’s collecting practices legitimized the imperial project.”Please see the Museum’s Visitor Page for Health\, Safety\, and Accessibility information. \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – suggested donation $10\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Caragol has led the effort to increase the representation of Latino historical figures and artists at the museum\, adding over 170 portraits to the collection and ensuring that Latino contributions to American history and art are interwoven through the museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, she was the lead curator for “Portraiture Now: Staging the Self\,” which examined the forces that shape identity–from friendships\, to gender dynamics\, and histories of migration–through the work of contemporary Latino artists. In 2015\, she curated “One Life: Dolores Huerta\,” exploring Huerta’s role as co-architect of the farm workers movement with César Chávez. She co-curated “The Face of Battle: Americans at War\, 9/11 to Now” (2017) and “UnSeen: Our Past in a New Light\, Ken Gonzales-Day and Titus Kaphar” (2018). \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Caragol was the curator of education at Museo de Arte de Ponce\, Puerto Rico\, where she organized the museum’s symposium on Pre-Raphaelite art and led a program of talks with contemporary Puerto Rican artists. She was the Museum of Modern Art’s Latin American bibliographer from 2004-2007\, and she worked as a postdoctoral researcher for Latin American Art in the United Kingdom: History\, Historiography\, Specificity\, 1960 to the Present\, an investigation led by the University of Essex (2007–2008). \n\n\n\nCaragol earned her PhD in art history from the City University of New York. Her dissertation “Boom and Dust: The Rise of Latin American and Latino Art in New York Exhibition Venues and Auction Houses\, 1970s–1980s\,” examined the incubating role of New York City’s alternative museums and art spaces and market during the “Latin American art boom” of the late 1980s. Her essay on Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Barack Obama was published in The Obama Portraits in February 2020 (Princeton University Press / National Portrait Gallery). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKate Clarke Lemay\, Historian\, joined the National Portrait Gallery in 2015. She is a Fulbright Scholar; a Presidential Counselor to the National WWII Museum; and the founding director of PORTAL\, the Portrait Gallery’s scholarly center. Lemay also served as the founding coordinating curator for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. In 2019\, Lemay curated “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence” to usher in the centennial of the U.S. American women’s suffrage anniversary. She published its eponymous catalogue with Princeton University Press which was awarded the 2021 Smithsonian Secretary’s Prize for Excellence in Research and the 2020 Amelia Bloomer Book Award from the American Library Association. \n\n\n\nIn 2017\, Lemay’s first book Triumph of the Dead: American WWII Cemeteries\, Monuments and Diplomacy in France was awarded the Terra Foundation in American Art publication grant. In 2018\, she served as guest editor for The International Journal of Military History and Historiography. She has published essays on art and military history for the University of North Texas Press\, Oxford University Press\, The Strategy Bridge\, Zócalo Public Square\, Reviews in American History\, and the Marine Corps University Press. Lemay’s research has been supported by a Terra Foundation in American Art predoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, a fellowship in American Modernism at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center\, and a fellowship from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at the Caen Mémorial Museum in France. Lemay served as the lead historian for the transformation of the museum’s landmark exhibition “America’s Presidents” (2017). Her other exhibitions include “Marlene Dietrich: Dressed for the Image” (2017). \n\n\n\nBefore joining the National Portrait Gallery\, Lemay was an assistant professor of art history at Auburn University Montgomery and visiting assistant professor of the history of modern and contemporary art at Brigham Young University. She earned a dual PhD in American art history and American studies from Indiana University (Bloomington).

During this period Numark represented and exhibited dozens of artists that would find great success\, including Michal Rovner\, Tony Feher\, Peter Halley\, Tara Donovan\, Sharon Louden\, Terri Friedman\, Zwelethu Mthethwa\, Dan Steinhilber and many others. Shortly after closing her gallery\, Numark launched CNAA art advisory to work more closely with her clients to help them build meaningful collections. Throughout this time\, Cheryl maintained close contact with many of the artists she had once exhibited\, facilitating exciting commissions and acquisitions (most recently a painting by Sharon Louden at the National Gallery of Art\, 2023) and hosting curated exhibitions on Artsy / within her home of work by artists Sharon Louden\, Marylyn Dintenfass and Terri Friedman (forthcoming shows include Jorge Yazpik\, October 2023 and Diana Cooper\, Spring 2024). In addition to placing and exhibiting work at both fairs and her home\, Cheryl has exhibited work by artists at Art Miami\, 2022\, and located public and private commissions for artists\, for both residential and commercial uses. \n\n\n\nCheryl currently serves on the collector’s council at the Hirshhorn Museum and is a member of The Tower Project at the National Gallery of Art. For over a decade Numark was on the Board of Directors for Cultural DC\, supporting its mission to ‘Make Space for Art’ in the DC area.

SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour: Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection\, 1860-1960
DESCRIPTION:Installation view of Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection\, 1860–1960\, March 22\, 2024–April 20\, 2025. Courtesy of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Photo: Rick Coulby. \n\n\n\nMeet ArtTable in DC for a curator-led tour of Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection\, 1860-1960 with Dr. Marina Isgro\, Associate Curator of Media and Performance Art at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, Smithsonian Institution. In anticipation of the fiftieth anniversary of the Hirshhorn’s opening on October 4\, 2024\, Revolutions places the work of 19 contemporary artists in dialogue with that of 117 artists who worked between 1860 and 1960: the century that introduced Modernism and abstraction\, and led up to the Hirshhorn’s establishment by Congress in 1966. An audio guide by Katy Hessel—part of her Museums Without Men series—accompanies the exhibition\, highlighting the women represented in Revolutions\, whose work completes and complicates art historical narratives they were frequently written out of. Revolutions‘ dialogue between living artists—including Torkwase Dyson\, Loie Hollowell\, and Catherine Opie—and their 19th- and 20th-century counterparts—such as Berenice Abbott\, Mary Cassatt\, and Alma Thomas—reveals the resonance and relevance of these earlier works in our contemporary culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgram admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\nNon-Members – $25\n\n\n\n\n\nNot an ArtTable member? Join today! \n\n\n\nAdmission to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and to all its exhibitions\, tours\, and other public educational programs is free of charge. Any charge or request for contributions is unrelated to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curator \n\n\n\n\nMarina Isgro is Associate Curator of Media and Performance Art at the Hirshhorn and was the lead curator of Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection\, 1860-1960. At the Museum\, she has also curated Laurie Anderson: The Weather; John Akomfrah: Purple; and OSGEMEOS: Endless Story\, forthcoming in September. Prior to joining the Hirshhorn\, Marina was Nam June Paik Fellow at the Harvard Art Museums\, where she curated Nam June Paik: Screen Play. She received her MA and PhD in art history from the University of Pennsylvania and her BA from Princeton University.

SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour: Time-Based Media at the National Portrait Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Expand your understanding and appreciation of time-based media on this special tour for the ArtTable community\, led by Dr. Charlotte Ickes\, Curator of Time-Based Media and Special Projects at the National Portrait Gallery\, Smithsonian Institution. As the pace of technological innovation continues to accelerate\, so too will the quantity of art produced within this precisely defined\, yet expansive category: time-based media\, or art that reveals itself to the viewer or over time\, encompasses film\, audio\, computer\, and slide-based works. As the National Portrait Gallery and its peer institutions build their collections in time-based media\, they are confronted with complex questions regarding the interpretation\, installation\, and conservation of these works\, as well as the opportunity to define best practices for future generations of scholars. Dr. Ickes’ tour will cover highlights of the National Portrait Gallery’s acquisitions in time-based media\, as well as explore how her Smithsonian colleagues have been grappling with these issues. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgram admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\nNon-Members – $25\n\n\n\n\n\nNot an ArtTable member? SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa\, Hisako Hibi\, and Miné Okubo" at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa\, Hisako Hibi\, and Miné Okubo at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, led by Melissa Ho\, Curator of 20th Century Art. \n\n\n\nMiki Hayakawa (1899-1953)\, Hisako Hibi (1907-1991)\, and Miné Okubo (1912-2001) were three of the most active and critically acclaimed American artists of Japanese descent in the years leading up to World War II. Their careers spanned eight decades and four US states\, yet the full extent of their contributions remain underrecognized within twentieth-century American art history. \n\n\n\nPictures of Belonging is an unprecedented examination of these three trailblazing figures. By tracing their artistic development before\, during\, and after the mass incarceration and displacement of Japanese Americans during World War II\, the exhibition offers a nuanced view of how these women continued to explore and experiment with new artistic expression throughout their lives. Created during tumultuous decades in modern US history\, their paintings\, along with their stories of resilience\, remind us of art’s power in the face of adversity and challenge. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the exhibition. \n\n\n\nPlease review the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s accessibility page for available accommodations. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? The Smithsonian American Art Museum does not charge an admission fee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Melissa Ho \n\n\n\nMelissa Ho is the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s curator of 20th-century art; she joined the museum’s staff in September 2016. Ho is responsible for research\, acquisitions and exhibitions related to the museum’s collections focusing on art since 1945. She currently is leading an initiative to expand and enrich the representation of Asian American experiences\, perspectives and artistic accomplishment in the museum’s collection and public displays. \n\n\n\nRecent projects include “American Voices and Visions: Modern and Contemporary Art” (2023)\, the first phase of a multiyear renewal and reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection galleries\, and “Composing Color: The Paintings of Alma Thomas” (2023)\, which will travel to several venues in the United States. Ho organized the critically acclaimed exhibition “Artists Respond: American Art and the Vietnam War\, 1965-1975” (2019) and “Artist to Artist” (2021). \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Ho worked as a curator at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden from 2011 to 2016\, where she organized “Barbara Kruger: Belief+Doubt” (2012)\, “Salvatore Scarpitta: Traveler” (2014) and “Shirin Neshat: Facing History” (2015) with Melissa Chiu. She also co-curated with Evelyn Hankins “At the Hub of Things” (2014)\, a re-installation of the museum’s collection. \n\n\n\nHo earned a bachelor’s degree in studio art and art history from Princeton University and a master’s degree in art history from the University of Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage credits:Miki Hayakawa\, One Afternoon\, ca. 1935\, oil on canvas\, 40 x 40 in.\, New Mexico Museum of Art\, Santa Fe\, Gift of Preston McCrossen in memory of his wife\, the artist\, 1954\, 520.23P

SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist" at the National Gallery of Art
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist at the National Gallery of Art\, led by Dr. Lynn K. Matheny\, Deputy Head of Interpretation and Curator of Special Projects. \n\n\n\nThis retrospective exhibition showcases the enduring legacy of Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012) as a visionary artist and an unwavering activist. As the most comprehensive presentation devoted to Catlett in the United States\, it features more than 150 works\, including well-known sculpture and prints\, rare paintings and drawings\, and important ephemera. The exhibition is co-organized by the Brooklyn Museum and the National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, and presented in collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago. \n\n\n\nOne of the defining artists of the 20th century\, Elizabeth Catlett addressed the injustices she witnessed and experienced through her bold prints and dynamic sculptures. In striving to make art for the people—from her roots in Washington\, DC\, Chicago\, and New York to the remarkable body of work she made during some 60 years in Mexico—Catlett put social justice at the very center of her work. An avowed feminist\, lifelong activist\, and deft formalist\, Catlett passionately addressed injustices such as class inequality\, racial violence\, and U.S. expansionism through her politically engaged art\, injustices which continue to shape the world today. \n\n\n\n\n\n“I have been\, and am currently\, and always hope to be a Black Revolutionary Artist and all that it implies.”– Elizabeth Catlett\, 1970 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the exhibition and this visionary artist-activist. \n\n\n\nPlease review the National Gallery of Art’s accessibility page for available accommodations. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\n\nNot a member?
