DESCRIPTION:Join co-curators Taína Caragol and Kate Lemay for an exclusive tour of “1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions” at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery! “That single year launched the United States on a path that would end with the annexation of Hawaii\, intervention in Cuba\, and the invasions of Puerto Rico\, the Philippines and Guam—profound geopolitical changes resulting from U.S. domination during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) and the Spanish-American War (April to August 1898)\, now often referred to as the War of 1898.”—Maya Wei-Haas\, The Smithsonian Magazine. \n\n\n\nPortraiture is part of how we represent ourselves\, and how we memorialize our historic public figures from the heroic to the problematic. 125 years after this extensive series of conflicts\, the U.S. continues to grapple with its imperial legacy. National Portrait Gallery\, Smithsonian Institution; gift of Aileen Conkey. \n\n\n\nThank you to ArtTable member Laura Roulet for initiating this program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curators \n\n\n\n\nTaína Caragol\, Curator of Painting and Sculpture and Latino Art and History\, joined the National Portrait Gallery in 2013 as the first curator for Latino art and history and her role was expanded to curator of painting and sculpture in 2015. Caragol has led the effort to increase the representation of Latino historical figures and artists at the museum\, adding over 170 portraits to the collection and ensuring that Latino contributions to American history and art are interwoven through the museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, she was the lead curator for “Portraiture Now: Staging the Self\,” which examined the forces that shape identity–from friendships\, to gender dynamics\, and histories of migration–through the work of contemporary Latino artists. In 2015\, she curated “One Life: Dolores Huerta\,” exploring Huerta’s role as co-architect of the farm workers movement with César Chávez. She co-curated “The Face of Battle: Americans at War\, 9/11 to Now” (2017) and “UnSeen: Our Past in a New Light\, Ken Gonzales-Day and Titus Kaphar” (2018).  \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Caragol was the curator of education at Museo de Arte de Ponce\, Puerto Rico\, where she organized the museum’s symposium on Pre-Raphaelite art and led a program of talks with contemporary Puerto Rican artists. She was the Museum of Modern Art’s Latin American bibliographer from 2004-2007\, and she worked as a postdoctoral researcher for Latin American Art in the United Kingdom: History\, Historiography\, Specificity\, 1960 to the Present\, an investigation led by the University of Essex (2007–2008). \n\n\n\nCaragol earned her PhD in art history from the City University of New York. Her dissertation “Boom and Dust: The Rise of Latin American and Latino Art in New York Exhibition Venues and Auction Houses\, 1970s–1980s\,” examined the incubating role of New York City’s alternative museums and art spaces and market during the “Latin American art boom” of the late 1980s. Her essay on Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Barack Obama was published in The Obama Portraits in February 2020 (Princeton University Press / National Portrait Gallery). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKate Clarke Lemay\, Historian\, joined the National Portrait Gallery in 2015. She is a Fulbright Scholar; a Presidential Counselor to the National WWII Museum; and the founding director of PORTAL\, the Portrait Gallery’s scholarly center. Lemay also served as the founding coordinating curator for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. In 2019\, Lemay curated “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence” to usher in the centennial of the U.S. American women’s suffrage anniversary. She published its eponymous catalogue with Princeton University Press which was awarded the 2021 Smithsonian Secretary’s Prize for Excellence in Research and the 2020 Amelia Bloomer Book Award from the American Library Association. \n\n\n\nIn 2017\, Lemay’s first book Triumph of the Dead: American WWII Cemeteries\, Monuments and Diplomacy in France was awarded the Terra Foundation in American Art publication grant. In 2018\, she served as guest editor for The International Journal of Military History and Historiography. She has published essays on art and military history for the University of North Texas Press\, Oxford University Press\, The Strategy Bridge\, Zócalo Public Square\, Reviews in American History\, and the Marine Corps University Press. Lemay’s research has been supported by a Terra Foundation in American Art predoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, a fellowship in American Modernism at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center\, and a fellowship from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at the Caen Mémorial Museum in France. Lemay served as the lead historian for the transformation of the museum’s landmark exhibition “America’s Presidents” (2017). Her other exhibitions include “Marlene Dietrich: Dressed for the Image” (2017). \n\n\n\nBefore joining the National Portrait Gallery\, Lemay was an assistant professor of art history at Auburn University Montgomery and visiting assistant professor of the history of modern and contemporary art at Brigham Young University. She earned a dual PhD in American art history and American studies from Indiana University (Bloomington).

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss your chance for a studio tour with celebrated artist Helen Zughaib! Zughaib is a Washington\, DC-based painter and mixed-media artist known for her vibrant and thought-provoking work. Born in Beirut\, Lebanon\, her pop-art influenced art explores themes related to issues of cultural identity\, migration\, and social justice and is characterized by its use of bold colors\, intricate patterns\, and symbolism. \n\n\n\nZughaib’s work has been gifted to international heads of state by President Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton and appears in galleries and museums around the world. She is a multi-year recipient of DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Fellowship award. In 2023\, she was featured at the Hall of Nations at the Kennedy Center\, and was commissioned by Disney/PIXAR. Zughaib has exhibitions running concurrently at The Kay Chernush Virtual Gallery\, ArtRage\, and ArtHub609 Gallery this fall. \n\n\n\n“My work is ultimately about creating empathy. Her work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States\, Europe and Lebanon. Her paintings are included in many private and public collections\, including the White House\, World Bank\, Library of Congress\, US Consulate\, Vancouver\, Canada\, American Embassy in Baghdad\, Iraq\, the Arab American National Museum in Detroit\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, and the Barjeel Art Foundation Collection. Her paintings are also included in the DC Art Bank Collection and she has received the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Fellowship award each year since 2015. Her work has been included in Art in Embassy State Department exhibitions abroad\, including Brunei\, Nicaragua\, Mauritius\, Iraq\, Belgium\, Lebanon\, Saudi Arabia and Sweden. Helen has served as Cultural Envoy to Palestine\, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia. The John F. Kennedy Center/REACH\, in Washington\, DC\, has selected Helen for the 2021-2024 Inaugural Social Impact Practice residency. Her paintings have been gifted to heads of state by President Obama and former Secretary of State\, Hillary Clinton.

Before joining the Archives\, Dr. Helmreich was associate director of grants programming at the Getty Foundation\, supporting individuals and institutions committed to advancing the greater understanding and preservation of the visual arts in Los Angeles and throughout the world. She also represented the Getty Foundation in the LA Arts Recovery Fund\, which supports small to mid-sized arts organizations in Los Angeles. While at the Getty\, Dr. Helmreich also served as the inaugural co-chair of the Getty DEAI Council and the associate director of digital initiatives at the Getty Research Institute. Her work in higher education has included appointments as dean of the College of Fine Arts\, professor of art history at Texas Christian University\, director of the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities\, and associate professor of art history at Case Western Reserve University.

During this period Numark represented and exhibited dozens of artists that would find great success\, including Michal Rovner\, Tony Feher\, Peter Halley\, Tara Donovan\, Sharon Louden\, Terri Friedman\, Zwelethu Mthethwa\, Dan Steinhilber and many others. Shortly after closing her gallery\, Numark launched CNAA art advisory to work more closely with her clients to help them build meaningful collections. Throughout this time\, Cheryl maintained close contact with many of the artists she had once exhibited\, facilitating exciting commissions and acquisitions (most recently a painting by Sharon Louden at the National Gallery of Art\, 2023) and hosting curated exhibitions on Artsy / within her home of work by artists Sharon Louden\, Marylyn Dintenfass and Terri Friedman (forthcoming shows include Jorge Yazpik\, October 2023 and Diana Cooper\, Spring 2024). In addition to placing and exhibiting work at both fairs and her home\, Cheryl has exhibited work by artists at Art Miami\, 2022\, and located public and private commissions for artists\, for both residential and commercial uses. \n\n\n\nCheryl currently serves on the collector’s council at the Hirshhorn Museum and is a member of The Tower Project at the National Gallery of Art. For over a decade Numark was on the Board of Directors for Cultural DC\, supporting its mission to ‘Make Space for Art’ in the DC area.

In anticipation of the fiftieth anniversary of the Hirshhorn’s opening on October 4\, 2024\, Revolutions places the work of 19 contemporary artists in dialogue with that of 117 artists who worked between 1860 and 1960: the century that introduced Modernism and abstraction\, and led up to the Hirshhorn’s establishment by Congress in 1966. An audio guide by Katy Hessel—part of her Museums Without Men series—accompanies the exhibition\, highlighting the women represented in Revolutions\, whose work completes and complicates art historical narratives they were frequently written out of. Their careers spanned eight decades and four US states\, yet the full extent of their contributions remain underrecognized within twentieth-century American art history. \n\n\n\nPictures of Belonging is an unprecedented examination of these three trailblazing figures. Ho organized the critically acclaimed exhibition “Artists Respond: American Art and the Vietnam War\, 1965-1975” (2019) and “Artist to Artist” (2021). \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Ho worked as a curator at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden from 2011 to 2016\, where she organized “Barbara Kruger: Belief+Doubt” (2012)\, “Salvatore Scarpitta: Traveler” (2014) and “Shirin Neshat: Facing History” (2015) with Melissa Chiu. Matheny\, Deputy Head of Interpretation and Curator of Special Projects. \n\n\n\nThis retrospective exhibition showcases the enduring legacy of Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012) as a visionary artist and an unwavering activist. As the most comprehensive presentation devoted to Catlett in the United States\, it features more than 150 works\, including well-known sculpture and prints\, rare paintings and drawings\, and important ephemera. The exhibition is co-organized by the Brooklyn Museum and the National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, and presented in collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago. \n\n\n\nOne of the defining artists of the 20th century\, Elizabeth Catlett addressed the injustices she witnessed and experienced through her bold prints and dynamic sculptures. In striving to make art for the people—from her roots in Washington\, DC\, Chicago\, and New York to the remarkable body of work she made during some 60 years in Mexico—Catlett put social justice at the very center of her work. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for an artist talk and exhibition walkthrough with Joan Danziger! Joan has two concurrent exhibitions on view at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center. \n\n\n\nSpanning 60 years of imaginative artistry\, The Magical World of Joan Danziger is the first career retrospective for Joan Danziger\, who is actively producing art at the age of 91. Danziger has been a working artist since the 1960s. The retrospective traces her evolution from a surrealist painter to a multimedia artist who transforms her creations into three-dimensional sculptures. Over the decades\, she evolved into a sculptor and glass artist who imbues her work with secret meanings from world religions\, history and mythology.A major milestone in her career was transitioning from an artist who worked on canvas to a three-dimensional artist. In 2008\, she added glass to her repertoire when she began her Beetles series. She enjoyed the results of working with glass so much that it led to two other series of glass sculptures of horses and her newest creation\, ravens. \n\n\n\nRavens: Spirits of the Sky will transform the American University Museum’s Long Gallery into an aviary. Featuring never-before-exhibited artworks\, the show is comprised entirely of 21 metal and glass raven sculptures inspired by the bird’s appearance in world mythology. Snow Crystal Raven references a Native American myth that expresses reverence and thankfulness to the Great Spirit. Smoky Raven demonstrates ‘lift’ in the bird’s preparation for flight. Colorful and predatory\, Amethyst Raven with Frog depicts a raven gripping a frog in its beak. The iridescent violets and yellow glass contrast to express the struggle of life and death. The ravens are captured in various poses\, including flight\, with three of the sculptures suspended from the ceiling. \n\n\n\nFor more than 60 years\, Washington\, D.C.-based artist Joan Danziger has beguiled audiences with her artworks born of mythology\, imagination and fantasy. As an artist\, she has metamorphosized from a painter to a sculptor to a glass artist. Danziger began her career as a surrealist painter and the dramatic hues in her paintings fed directly into painted sculptures — from vivid\, surreal flowers in vases resting on pigmented patterned\, handwoven carpets to large colorful figures of acrobats and musicians\, to brilliantly hued figures riding bicycles with parrots.Her public commissions can be seen along the Eastern Seaboard in Maryland\, New Jersey and Washington\, D.C. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable at the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art to discover collections that document the history of women in American visual arts. During this tour and presentation\, attendees will learn about the lives and legacies of Toshiko Takaezu and Hung Liu through archival collections. \n\n\n\nFor more than 70 years\, the Archives has provided researchers worldwide with access to the largest collection of primary source materials collected from artists\, galleries\, and other art world institutions and professionals. The Archives holds nearly 6\,500 collections comprised of more than 30 million primary sources including correspondence\, diaries\, sketchbooks\, photographic\, audiovisual\, and born-digital materials. As one of the oldest and most respected oral history collections in the world\, the Archives’ Oral History Program has preserved the voices of the American art world in more than 2\,600 interviews. Learn more about the Archives here.Toshiko Takaezu (1922–2011) was a pioneering 20 th century ceramic artist known for her signature closed forms and installations. Born in Pepeekeo\, Hawai‘i\, Takaezu attended Cranbrook Academy in Michigan and taught for decades at Princeton University. \n\n\n\nHung Liu (1948–2021) was a groundbreaking painter whose works drew primarily from historical Chinese photographs of women and children. Born in Changchun\, China\, Liu studied under Allan Kaprow at the University of California\, San Diego and taught for decades at Mills College. \n\n\n\nChristina Ayson-Plank is the Asian Pacific American Collections Specialist at the Archives of American Art. She earned her Ph.D. in Visual Studies from the University of California\, Santa Cruz. \n\n\n\nJayna Josefson is a project archivist at the Archives of American Art with a focus on processing the papers of women artists.
