Originally designed to further encourage one-to-one networking amongst its members in DC\, CONNECT transitioned to a virtual lunch hour conversation series designed to allow members to ask questions outside their day-to-day areas of expertise. \nDuring this session we will hear from Pauline Willis\, Director and CEO of the American Federation of Arts (AFA). \nPauline Willis has been the Director and CEO of the American Federation of Arts (AFA) since 2012\, a century-old\, not-for-profit organization that develops\, raises money\, and handles all logistics to tour top quality exhibitions to museum across America. Ms. Willis previously served as the organization’s Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer.  \nUnder her leadership\, the AFA’s exhibition program has been reinvigorated and traveling exhibitions increased from two to more than twenty. Working with the board of trustees and a strengthened staff\, she also developed innovative programs relating to museum exhibitions and collaborations\, expanded the organization’s membership program\, and raised funds to enable these endeavors.  \nA curatorial research program developed by Ms. Willis created new partnerships with museums internationally. One\, the China Initiatives Program of 2013\, fostered cultural exchange with Chinese museums\, resulting in the US-China Museum Summit\, co-organized with the Asia Society\, which brought together over thirty American and twenty Chinese museum directors for presentations and discussions in New York City. In 2018\, Ms. Willis oversaw the AFA partnering with the Italian arts organization LoveItaly\, and is currently spearheading a cultural exchange of prized Italian collections with U.S. museums.    \nRecognizing important issues shared by museums nationwide\, Ms. Willis established ArtViews\, a panel discussion series for graduate school students and museum professionals to explore and address current concerns among museums and other arts organizations.  \nAlso under her leadership\, the AFA assumed responsibility for administering the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation that oversees a biennial competition and confers thirty $20\,000 grants to artists who work in varied media. \nPauline Willis holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Baruch College\, City University of New York\, and in 2019 she attended the Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont\, California. She is a board member of ArtTable\, a national organization for professional women in the arts\, and a board member of the Art Bridges Foundation. She readily embraces diversity through her exposure to varied cultural environments and extensive travel.

Tasked with leading the institution through its opening and beyond\, Jackson-Dumont came to the Lucas Museum from the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, where she served as the Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education from 2014 to 2019. \nAt the Lucas Museum\, Jackson-Dumont oversees wide-ranging programming and operational teams and will manage a staff of more than 230 by the time the museum opens. She leads the curatorial\, museum experience\, education\, and collections management teams in exploring the extensive collection and developing exhibitions and programs for the museum’s extensive gallery and classroom spaces. The Lucas Museum broke ground in March 2018 in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park\, and Jackson-Dumont also works with the architecture and construction teams to bring architect Ma Yansong’s vision for the 11-acre campus and 300\,000-square-foot building to life. Jackson-Dumont reports to the Lucas Museum’s board of directors. \nThroughout her career\, Jackson-Dumont has developed programming around museum collections and special exhibitions to engage a broad range of audiences\, from school-age children and their teachers to artists and scholars. At The Met\, Jackson-Dumont conceived of and managed an array of dynamic public programs\, community engagement and academic initiatives\, and live arts performances for diverse audiences. Jackson-Dumont also served for eight years as the deputy director for education and public programs and adjunct curator of modern and contemporary art at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). There\, she oversaw educational public programs\, interpretive technology\, and community affairs across the museum’s three venues\, as well as organized significant exhibitions and collaborative projects on the work of Theaster Gates\, Titus Kaphar\, LaToya Ruby Frazier\, and Sondra Perry\, among others. Prior to that\, Jackson-Dumont held positions at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, among other cultural organizations. \nKnown for her ability to blur the lines between academia\, popular culture\, and non-traditional art-going communities\, Jackson-Dumont is invested in curating experiences that foster dynamic exchanges between art/artists\, past/present\, public/private\, and people/places. She has organized numerous exhibitions\, lectures\, performances\, symposia\, and education initiatives and has contributed essays to a host of publications and worked with numerous artists. \n \nAbout Suzy Delvalle \nSusan (Suzy) Delvalle is a fierce advocate for art and artists. With over 20 years of leadership experience in the cultural sector\, she has committed her career to enhancing the impact of mission-based organizations and building opportunity and equity in the arts. She most recently served as President and Executive Director of Creative Capital\, an innovative arts nonprofit that adapts venture philanthropy concepts to support individual artists. Only the second Director in Creative Capital’s history\, Suzy oversaw some of the most dramatic changes in the organization’s two-decade history. Under her leadership\, Creative Capital increased its annual operating budget 20 percent by instituting a three-year fundraising cycle\, further developed the board with ten new active members while also establishing a National Advisory Council\, and expanded services to artists by instituting regular\, annual Creative Capital Awards and retreats. \nSuzy formerly served as the founding Director of the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling\, where she oversaw all aspects of the development and opening of the museum. She previously served as Director of External Affairs and Development at El Museo Del Barrio\, where she dramatically increased the museum’s budget and attendance over her eleven-year tenure. Before joining El Museo\, she worked for American Composers Orchestra following a career in consumer banking and advertising. Suzy has served as adjunct faculty at NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies and is a guest lecturer at several universities. She serves on the Board of ArtTable\, New Yorkers for Culture & Arts\, The Laundromat Project and is a member of The Metropolitan Museum’s Advisory Committee in Culture Engagement. She was born and raised in Curaçao and speaks Spanish\, Dutch\, and Papiamento. \n \nAbout Lisa Yancey \nRecently coined a strategic maverick by a long-time colleague\, Lisa Yancey is an organizational development consultant who specializes in strategic organizational planning\, business planning\, program evaluation and assessments\, executive project management\, revenue modeling\, leadership coaching\, and organizational structure assessments for nonprofit institutions. She is the President of Yancey Consulting\, LLC\, an organizational and leadership development consulting firm committed to unlocking\, provoking\, facilitating\, and collaboratively imagining equitable social impacts on the local to national level™. Lisa advises a spectrum of practitioners\, nonprofit organizations\, philanthropists\, and philanthropic institutions committed to dismantling inequities\, enriching disinvested communities\, building leadership\, and amplifying diverse perspectives. She has worked with\, facilitated\, and provided pro bono services to over 100 organizations or grantmaking institutions in the past 19 years. She works across arts and culture\, youth development\, social justice\, media justice\, economic justice\, and open internet sectors. As an entrepreneur\, Lisa also advises emerging for-profit entities that are values-aligned with her equity-based values. Getting to know organizations personally to co-develop strategies\, benchmark indicators\, and measurable objectives is a hallmark of her work. \nLisa matriculated from both Boston College Law School and Emory University\, respectively earning her Juris Doctorate and Bachelor of the Arts degrees. She used to be a professional dancer and choreographer and has been a member of the New York State Bar Association since 2000. She started her consultancy practice in 2001. Her professional ambition is to make meaningful differences that systemically elevate equity\, particularly disrupting inequities that impact historically disinvested\, underinvested or marginalized communities. \n \nAbout Marie Watt \nMarie Watt is an American artist and citizen of the Seneca Nation with German-Scot ancestry. Her interdisciplinary work draws from history\, biography\, Iroquois protofeminism\, and Indigenous teachings; in it\, she explores the intersection of history\, community\, and storytelling. Through collaborative actions she instigates multigenerational and cross-disciplinary conversations that might create a lens and conversation for understanding connectedness to place\, one another\, and the universe. \nWatt holds an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University; she also has degrees from Willamette University and the Institute of American Indian Arts; and in 2016 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Willamette University. \nShe has attended residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Vermont Studio Center; and has received fellowships from Anonymous Was a Woman\, the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, the Harpo Foundation and the Ford Family Foundation and the Native Arts and Culture Foundation. \nMarie serves on the board for VoCA (Voices in Contemporary Art) and on the Native Advisory Committee at the Portland Art Museum and in 2020 became a member of the Board of Trustees at the Portland Art Museum. She is a fan of Crow’s Shadow\, an Indigenous founded printmaking institute located on the homelands of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla\, as well as\nPortland Community College. \nSelected collections include the Seattle Art Museum\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery\, Yale University Art Gallery\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian and Renwick Gallery\, the Tacoma Art Museum\, the Denver Art Museum\, and the Portland Art Museum. She is represented by PDX\nContemporary Art in Portland\, Oregon\, Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle\, Washington\, and Marc Straus Gallery in New York City\, New York.

She is a MacArthur Fellow\, an Annalee & Barnett Newman Foundation recipient and a Smithsonian Artist Fellow. Turk received her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, Rinehart School of Sculpture in 1994 and her BA from Scripps College\, Claremont\, CA in 1983. In 2017\, she launched ET Studios (a CA non-profit) to develop open community experiences. Her work can be found in numerous public collections including The Jewish Museum (New York\, NY); The National Museum for Women in the Arts (Washington\, DC); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles\, CA); and The Mint Museum (Charlotte\, NC)\, among others. In 2014\, The Laguna Art Museum (Laguna\, CA) hosted Elizabeth Turk: Sentient Forms\, a mid-career survey of the artist’s work. Currently\, Turk splits time between a studio in Santa Ana\, CA and New York City. She has been represented by Hirschl & Adler Modern since 2000. \nAbout Hirschl & Adler Modern \nHirschl & Adler Modern\, founded in 1981\, specializes in art from 1913 to the present\, with a strong emphasis on American Modernism and the post-war period. It also represents a select group of established and mid-career contemporary artists who are featured regularly through scheduled solo and group exhibitions in its 11\,000 square-foot gallery space at the crossroads of 57th Street and Madison Avenue in New York City. Its parent company Hirschl & Adler Galleries\, founded in 1952\, has been specializing in important American and European art of all periods throughout its 69 year history. \nLed for over 50 years by President and Director\, Stuart P. Feld\, and joined in 1999 by his daughter Elizabeth Feld\, Hirschl & Adler mounts about 8 to 10 special exhibitions per year\, most accompanied by scholarly publications. Campaign advertisements saturate TV and radio while social media feeds explode with political declarations. As local and national elections are decided in November\, the U.S. also marks the 100-year anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. As these two events coalesce\, the Frost Art Museum presents House to House: Women\, Politics\, and Place. The multimedia works in this exhibition explore the changing roles of women\, metaphorically represented by the house as domestic space and the most public of houses\, the U.S House of Representatives\, where there are 100 women serving as Representatives. They share many parallels in their backgrounds and interests: both studied art history in college and began their careers in the museum world\, but most importantly\, both share a curatorial vision.  \nChristine Berry is from Geneseo\, New York\, and graduated from Baylor University in Waco\, Texas in 1992. She received a Master’s degree in art history from the University of North Texas\, along with a certification in museum studies and education. She worked at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth\, Texas\, as Assistant Curator before moving to New York City for a position at the Whitney Museum of American Art.  Christine moved from the non-profit sector to commercial world in 2000. She was Associate Director at Spanierman Gallery/Spanierman Modern for ten years before opening a gallery with Martha Campbell. \nMartha Campbell is from Greenville\, in the Mississippi Delta\, and attended the Groton School in Massachusetts.  She then graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville\, Tennessee\, in 2006. Directly from college she went to a position at the Phillips Collection in Washington\, D.C.  Deciding to explore a path in the gallery world\, Martha was hired at age 24 as an Associate Director at Spanierman Modern in New York.  \nWith a strong emphasis on research and networking with artists and scholars\, Berry and Campbell decided to join forces and open their own art gallery. Berry Campbell Gallery opened in 2013 in the heart of Chelsea’s art district\, at 530 West 24th Street on the ground floor. In 2015\, the gallery expanded\, doubling its size with an additional 2\,000 square feet of exhibition space.  \nHighlighting a selection of postwar and contemporary artists\, the gallery fulfills an important gap in the art world\, revealing a depth within American modernism that is just beginning to be understood\, encompassing the many artists who were left behind due to stylistic trends\, race\, gender\, or geography. Since its inception\, the gallery has been especially instrumental in giving women artists long overdue consideration\, an effort that museums have only just begun to take up\, such as in the 2016 traveling exhibition\, Women of Abstract Expressionism curated by University of Denver professor Gwen F. Chanzit. In her practice she produces distinct bodies of work that utilize the excess of our consumer-based culture. Spector responds to available materials\, mostly discarded\, in combination with a changeable work environment. She seeks to make work that takes shape as an agent of change – who begin as sculpture rooted in the art world of form and content but that physically move into the world of social issues and can directly respond to its needs. Her most current work in progress is the defining project for a long term body of work entitled\, The Nowadays\, which uses a small cabin in the mountains of Pennsylvania as a tool and conduit through which she will explore alternatives to resource economy. \nSpector’s work is part of many public and private collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, which presented her solo exhibition “Keep The Home Fires Burning” in 2015\, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, Woodmere Art Museum\, and the West Collection in PA\, and Human Rights Campaign Headquarters in Washington\, DC. Her ongoing collaborative project\, Village\, which began at the Philadelphia Museum of Art has traveled to alternative art spaces in Brooklyn\, Costa Rica\, San Francisco. Chicago and Montréal. Her work has been reviewed in Artforum\, Art In America and featured in ARTnews.  She has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts\, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Leeway Foundation. Her residencies include Mildred’s Lane in Beach Lake\, PA\, and RAIR (Recycled Artists In Residence) and Nextfab Studio in Philadelphia. Spector has been actively engaged in Philadelphia’s art community for years as a respected artist\, innovative gallery owner\, teacher and champion of emerging talent. Between 1999 and 2010\, she founded and directed SPECTOR Gallery/Projects\, a program to work outside the traditional gallery system. From 2006 to 2013\, she published Artjaw.com\, an online multimedia anthology of first person stories from the Philadelphia art community. Spector is faculty in the Weitzman School of Design\, University of Pennsylvania. \nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Huckaby has exhibited as an emerging artist at Phillips New York\, the Tyler Museum of Art\, The Studio School of Harlem\, the Camden Palace Hotel in Cork City\, Ireland\, and the Texas Biennial at Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum. Her work is included in several prestigious collections; the Library of Congress\, the McNay Art Museum\, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas\, and the Samella Lewis Contemporary Art Collection at Scripps College in Claremont\, California. Huckaby was a featured artist in MAP2020: The Further We Roll\, The More We Gain at the Amon Carter Museum and State of the Art 2020 at The Momentary and Crystal Bridges Museum\, both opened in the spring of 2020. SUMMARY:Virtual | Challenges & Choices Facing Nonprofit Leaders\, with Deborah Fisher & Irene Shum
DESCRIPTION:12pm ET | 11am CT | 9am PT\nThe year 2020 has been a trying one for the art world\, specifically for nonprofit organizations. A study from the National Center for Arts Research released over the summer estimated that New York City’s nonprofit arts sector alone had lost more than half a billion dollars since March\, with 11% of smaller cultural organizations not expected to survive. The data is bleak\, but in spite of it all\, nonprofit leaders are showing that when faced with a challenge\, they will work to execute the best possible solution to further their organizations’ missions or legacies. \nDuring this discussion we will hear from Deborah Fisher\, Executive Director of A Blade of Grass\, and Irene Shum\, former Executive Director of Art in General. Both spaces were majorly affected by the pandemic and ultimately came to different solutions. She is the founding Executive Director of A Blade of Grass\, a non-profit solely dedicated to nurturing socially engaged art. Fisher has served as an art\, strategy\, and philanthropy advisor to Shelley and Donald Rubin\, and has worked in many capacities at the intersection of art and civic life in New York City\, including as studio manager at Socrates Sculpture Park\, and as an educator and curriculum developer for the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment. Her approach to leadership is deeply informed by her training as a sculptor\, particularly her experience making public art. She also writes and lectures internationally about arts funding and socially engaged art. \nFor fifteen years\, curator Irene Mei Zhi Shum has actively explored the intersection of art and architecture\, organizing ambitious projects and championing the artists and designers with whom she works. Most recently\, she was the Executive Director of Art in General in New York City. Prior to this\, Shum served as the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Menil Collection in Houston\, Texas (2018-2020) and the inaugural curator for the Philip Johnson Glass House\, a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in New Canaan\, Connecticut (2007-2018). An early and major responsibility at the Glass House was the coordination of the transfer of property from the estates of architect Philip Johnson and art patron David Whitney to the National Trust. Shum shaped the Glass House’s collection and implemented the site’s arts initiative\, introducing exhibitions\, music and dance performances. Notably\, she organized and secured funding for the large-scale\, site-specific exhibitions Fujiko Nakaya: Veil (2014) and Yayoi Kusama: Narcissus Garden (2016)\, as well as a highly acclaimed sound performance by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and visual artist and musician Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto)\, that was recorded and released as Glass (Noton\, 2018). She is the dean of students and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts (Department of Visual Culture and the Artistic Research) in Warsaw and Warsaw University. She is also a lecturer at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw. For many years she conducted research on Polish art of the 1970s\, particularly advocating performance and video art. In 2010 she established the non-profit organization Arton Foundation. Its main activity is the elaboration of private archives of artists. Kuźmicz is the author and editor of many books\, such as “The Workshop of The Film Form” (2016\, co-edited with Łukasz Ronduda\, published by Sternberg Press) and “History of Performance in Poland” and many monographs of Polish artists (like Zdzisław Jurkiewicz\, Ludmiła Popiel and many others) based on her research in private archives. She has curated many exhibitions in Poland and abroad\, most recently: “Her Own Way – Female Artists and the Moving Image in Art in Poland”\, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and the monographic exhibition of Barbara Kozłowska “You Can See It All Anywhere” (2020\, Muzeum of Contemporary Art\, Wrocław). She is also the curator of the film festival “Arton Review”\, devoted to the forgotten forerunners of Polish avant-garde film and video. The 2017 edition took place in Whitechapel Gallery in London and in 2020\, the film festival was part of the Oberhausen Shortfilm Festival. Kuźmicz was the coordinator of an international art project “Forgotten Heritage – European Avant-Garde Art Online” dedicated to the re-discovering marginalized avant-garde artists from Poland\, Croatia\, Belgium and Estonia. In 2017 she also established Edward Hartwig Foundation\, the organization devoted to the developing and dissemination of legacy and art on Edward Hartwig\, the key Polish photographer. Raised by an alternative medicine practitioner and in experimental social structures\, I was born into countercultural participation. Fundamentally centered on belief structures and systems\, my practice mediates space by linking the history of ritual and belief throughout various cultures and time periods\, and placing this material in relationship through the approach of “radical subjectivity” in the studio. \nAbout Karen Lofgren \n \nKaren Lofgren is a Los Angeles-based artist working primarily in sculpture and artist books from a feminist and decolonial perspective\, and holds an MFA from CalArts. Her research centers on ritual\, history\, mythology\, and the construction of consciousness over time\, forming relationships between cultural systems and other wild systems. She was a 2019 Pollock-Krasner grant recipient; receives Canada Council Grant support; and was Fulbright Core Scholar at UAL\, Central St. Martins College in 2017/2018. \nSolo exhibitions include What is To Cure at Royale Projects Contemporary Art; Trajectory Object c. 2000-2050 with High Desert Test Sites\, as well as solo shows at LACE; Pitzer Art Galleries; and Machine Project. As Administrator\, McDaniel oversees the divisions of administrative support\, architecture and capital improvement\, facilities\, horticulture\, personnel\, procurement\, and security\, which comprise more than one-third of the museum’s staff. \nAbout her appointment\, she says “I have dedicated my entire career to serving communities through art and education. Now\, coming to Washington\, I will have the honor of working for a community that encompasses all the United States. The National Gallery of Art is a treasure that belongs to every American\, and unlike most other treasure\, it becomes more valuable the more it is shared.” \nSince 2004\, McDaniel has been the deputy director of finance and operations at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Her areas of expertise include change management\, human resource development\, nonprofit financial management\, and organizational development. At The Studio Museum in Harlem\, she is a member of the leadership team responsible for implementing the museum’s strategic plan and managing the construction of a new facility that spans 80\,000 square feet. McDaniel previously served as the associate executive director for operations at the Hetrick-Martin Institute\, where she was part of the team that opened Harvey Milk High School. McDaniel has also served as treasurer on several nonprofit boards\, including those of ArtTable\, Bronx Council on the Arts\, and North Star Fund. McDaniel holds a master’s degree in public administration from Baruch College. Prior to joining Hindman\, her career spanned two decades at Christie’s Auction House\, including seventeen years in the New York office serving as Vice President\, Senior Specialist and Department Head for Antiquities. Following her move to Chicago\, Ms. Morse Limmer served as Vice President\, Business Development for Christie’s Midwest Regional Office. Most recently\, Ms. Morse Limmer spent close to five years owning and operating 2050 Art Services\, a premiere art and antiquities appraisals and advisory consultancy firm. Ms. Morse Limmer holds an M.A. in Greek and Roman art from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and a B.A. in Classics and Art History from Brown University. In 2008\, Ahlberg Yohe received her PhD from the University of New Mexico; her dissertation was a focus on the social life of weaving in contemporary Navajo life. Along with Teri Greeves\, Ahlberg Yohe is the co-curator of Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists. At MIA\, Ahlberg Yohe seeks new initiatives to expand understanding and new curatorial practices of historical and contemporary Native art. \n  \nChristina E. Burke is Curator of Native American Art at Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa\, OK. Her work focuses on collaborative projects with Native artists\, from collections research to exhibition and program development. She is interested in how Indigenous people record and present stories through visual\, literary\, and performing arts. She’s served on several boards including the Native American Art Studies Association (NAASA) and the Advisory Board for  Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists. \n  \nTeri Greeves (Kiowa) is a contemporary beadwork artist\, recognized for pictorial narrative works. She earned her M.F.A. at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University and B.A. in Studio Art at Georgetown University. She was also a participant at the Chautauqua School of Art residency program. Her work has been exhibited nationally including art galleries such as Hartnett Gallery of the University of Rochester and Torpedo Factory Art Center. Her work has been featured and reviewed internationally including in television programs such as PBS’s WETA Arts series that showcases the creative arts scene in the Greater Washington DC area as well as one of the major Korean national television networks SBS’s international news. Kwon won awards such as the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University’s Traveling Fellowship as well as the artist residencies at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity\, Vermont Studio Center\, NARS Foundation\, Montgomery College\, and Textile Arts Center. She presented artist lectures and workshops at Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, The Phillips Collection\, Georgetown University\, Lehigh University\, University of Rochester\, Emerson College\, Montgomery College\, among others.\n \nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She is the dean of students and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts (Department of Visual Culture and the Artistic Research) in Warsaw and Warsaw University. She is also a lecturer at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw. For many years she conducted research on Polish art of the 1970s\, particularly advocating performance and video art. In 2010 she established the non-profit organization Arton Foundation. Its main activity is the elaboration of private archives of artists. Kuźmicz is the author and editor of many books\, such as “The Workshop of The Film Form” (2016\, co-edited with Łukasz Ronduda\, published by Sternberg Press) and “History of Performance in Poland” and many monographs of Polish artists (like Zdzisław Jurkiewicz\, Ludmiła Popiel and many others) based on her research in private archives. She has curated many exhibitions in Poland and abroad\, most recently: “Her Own Way – Female Artists and the Moving Image in Art in Poland”\, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and the monographic exhibition of Barbara Kozłowska “You Can See It All Anywhere” (2020\, Muzeum of Contemporary Art\, Wrocław). She is also the curator of the film festival “Arton Review”\, devoted to the forgotten forerunners of Polish avant-garde film and video. The 2017 edition took place in Whitechapel Gallery in London and in 2020\, the film festival was part of the Oberhausen Shortfilm Festival. Kuźmicz was the coordinator of an international art project “Forgotten Heritage – European Avant-Garde Art Online” dedicated to the re-discovering marginalized avant-garde artists from Poland\, Croatia\, Belgium and Estonia. In 2017 she also established Edward Hartwig Foundation\, the organization devoted to the developing and dissemination of legacy and art on Edward Hartwig\, the key Polish photographer. She also curated the museum’s inaugural galleries of California art. Since arriving at The Morgan\, she has curated By Any Means: Contemporary Drawings from The Morgan (2019) and Drawing the Curtain: Maurice Sendak’s Designs for Opera and Ballet (2019). She has published essays on Bruce Conner\, Richard Diebenkorn\, Paul McCarthy\, Allen Ruppersberg\, and Andy Warhol\, among others. Rachel holds a PhD in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University. \n \nAs Senior Curator of Modern Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Carol S. Eliel is involved with exhibitions and acquisitions of historical and living artists. Current and upcoming projects include Betye Saar: Call and Response (at LACMA earlier this year\, on view now at The Morgan and traveling through 2021)\, which looks at the arc of Saar’s career through the lens of her sketchbooks; and Light\, Space\, Surface: Southern California Art from LACMA’s Collection (2021-22\, traveling)\, both with publications. The Saar catalogue received the 2020 Publication Award for Excellence by the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC). She previously co-organized Moholy-Nagy: Future Present (2016-17) with the Guggenheim and the Art Institute of Chicago. Carol has recently spearheaded acquisitions by Betye Saar\, Fred Eversley\, Maren Hassinger\, Mildred Howard\, Lari Pittman\, Alison Saar\, and others. She conceived and produced the core twenty of LACMA’s Artists on Art series of short\, web-based videos featuring artists speaking about a specific work in LACMA’s encyclopedic collections. She started at LACMA as a curatorial assistant\, having received her BA from Yale and her MA and PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts\, NYU. In 1999 Carol was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government. She is an associate of the W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute at the Hutchins Center at Harvard University. She was recently a guest curator of The Phillips Collection exhibit\, “Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition.” The exhibit presents the works of 20th to 21st century African American artists alongside the examples of 20th-century art that inspired those American artists. Childs was also a curator at the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland. \nLaura Roulet is an independent curator and writer in the DC metropolitan area and specializes in contemporary and Latin American art. She has organized exhibitions in Mexico\, Puerto Rico and the U.S. including at the OAS Art Museum of the Americas\, the American University Museum\, the Mexican Cultural Institute\, Hillyer Art Space\, WPA\, Arlington Arts Center\, and the DC Art Center. Roulet is a frequent contributor to Sculpture magazine. Her other publications include many catalog essays\, encyclopedia entries\, articles in American Art\, Art Journal and Art Nexus. In the fall of 2020\, Brentwood Arts Exchange exhibited her most recent exhibition\, “Mothering in a World Turned Upside Down.” The exhibit focused on visual embodiments of motherhood during a time of social\, physical\, and economic uncertainty. \nSarah Tanguy is a Washington\, DC-based independent curator and arts writer. From 2004-2019\, Tanguy was also a curator for Art in Embassies\, U.S. Department of State\, where she curated over 100 exhibitions and 12 permanent collections for U.S. diplomatic facilities overseas. She has also worked at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, the National Gallery\, The Tremaine Collection\, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service\, and The Hechinger Collection. She was a producer in the entertainment industry for over twenty years. \nMs. Blanco has served on numerous boards and committees within the areas of architecture\, music\, theater and fine arts. She and her husband have been collecting art by Cuban American artists for over 25 years and are the founders of the In Art We Trust Foundation and Museum. \nMs. Blanco is currently the founding board chair serving the Arts Museum of the Americas\, in Washington\, DC. During her decade-long stay in New York\, she earned her B.A. and M.A. in Art History at Hunter College and held positions in various institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). In Israel\, she worked as a curator at the Haifa Museum of Art and has organized public programs and curated numerous exhibitions in leading museums and various cultural venues. \nRotem is the co-founder and co-director of REACTIK\, an International Erasmus+ Jean-Monnet Network\, researching EU Cultural Diplomacy and Policy. Rotem served on the International Council of the renowned television series Art21\, the Israeli Lottery Committee for the Arts\, the International Exposure dance festival\, and DocAviv film festival. \nAbout Artis \nArtis is an independent nonprofit organization that supports contemporary artists from Israel whose work addresses aesthetic\, social and political questions to inspire reflection and debate. Artis was founded in 2004 by philanthropist Rivka Saker with the goal of amplifying international recognition of artists from Israel. Starting off as a series of public events timed with New York’s Armory Show\, the organization’s scope expanded to include programs that invest in artists and cultural exchange. We raise our annual budget without governmental funds through the generosity of individuals and foundations that share our values.
