Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, Charlotte has held fellowship appointments at the Whitney Independent Study Program\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and the Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia). \nIckes has curated and co-curated exhibitions and public programs at multiple institutions and cultural spaces. This includes the Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia)\, Slought\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Anthology Film Archives\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The gallery is located near the Metroline Orange: Ballston-MU. \n  \n\n  \n\nAbout the Artists\nMilan-based artists Sara Goldschmied (b.1975\, Arzignano) and Eleonora Chiari (b.1971\, Rome) have been working together as the artist-duo Goldschmied & Chiari since 2001. Sara and Eleonora met in the late 1990s through a shared interest in photography and feminism activism. Their shared interests soon led to joint art projects and a remarkable two-decade-long partnership. They have earned widespread respect and recognition\, both in Italy and internationally\, through their innovative use of photography\, video\, performance\, and installations. Much of their work draws conceptually from philosophy\, social studies\, and their historical Italian background. Their dynamic of working as a duo fundamentally impacts their approach to every project. They state that their most essential tool “…is our relationship as an artist duo because it feeds our art practice\, for example\, so that we see multiple sides of one issue.” Magnifica was organized by International Arts & Artists in partnership with the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington\, DC\, in collaboration with Marymount University. This project is supported by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism under the 2019 Italian Council Program. \nAbout the Exhibition\nThis exhibition is a collaboration by many ArtTable Members of the DC chapter\, all of whom will be in attendance. They are Allison Nance\, Curator; Caitlin Berry\, Cody Gallery Director; Maria Sancho-Arroyo\, Catalog Essayist; Ruth Abrahams\, Catalog Designer. Funds raised from this program will support the DC chapter locally\, including our intern\, who receives a stipend for her work coordinating chapter activities and communications. Your contribution makes a real impact on the growth and mentorship opportunities in our chapter\, thank you! \nIn Magnifica\, Goldschmied & Chiari bring together new work from their iconic Untitled Views series\, stylized with billowing pink and purple shades of smoke reminiscent of abstract blooms\, deconstructing the very notion of portraying an idea\, a face\, a sensation\, an architectural space. Three vase sculptures in pink blown Murano glass debut in this exhibition; the anthropomorphic shapes of these Magnifica vases are sensual and dangerous\, drawing inspiration from carnivorous pitcher plants in deep reds and purples\, and from lipstick kisses in bold pinks. DESCRIPTION:9am PT/10am MT/11am CT/12pm ET\nPlease join us for a virtual tour of Emma Amos: Color Odyssey with exhibition curator\, Shawnya Harris\, curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at the Georgia Art Museum. \nAt the end of the tour\, Harris will be joined by Laurel Garber\, Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, who oversaw the museum’s installation of the show and contributed to the catalogue\, as well as Curator of Contemporary Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Jodi Throckmorton\, who curated the exhibition Joan Semmel: Skin in the Game*. They will discuss the coincidence of major retrospectives by two extraordinary\, under-appreciated artists of the same generation\, working at the same time in the same city\, and connections between the two artists’ work. She is the PMA’s curator of Emma Amos: Color Odyssey\, organized by the Georgia Museum of Art. Laurel is also a PhD candidate at Northwestern University\, where she is completing a dissertation on the social position of the printer in nineteenth-century France. Laurel has held positions and fellowships at the Art Institute of Chicago\, Getty Museum\, Clark Art Institute\, and Courtauld Gallery. She received an MA at the Courtauld as well as a BA from Cornell University. \nShawnya L. Harris\, Ph.D. is the organizing curator for Emma Amos: Color Odyssey\, centering on the work of the late feminist artist Emma Amos (1937-2020). Harris is the Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at the Georgia Museum of Art\, University of Georgia. Recently\, Harris has been a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership. She earned her doctorate in art history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also an alumna of Yale University. \nJodi Throckmorton is the curator of contemporary art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia. Before joining PAFA in fall 2014\, she was curator of modern and contemporary art at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University in Kansas. Prior to that\, she was associate curator at the San Jose Museum of Art in California. She organized the exhibition and publications for Rina Banerjee: Make Me a Summary of the World (2018) with Lauren Dickens and Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India (2015). Her other recent projects include Nick Cave: Rescue (2018)\, Paul Chan: Pillowsophia (2017)\,  Melt/Carve/Forge: Embodied Sculptures by Cassils (2016)\, Alyson Shotz: Plane Weave (2016)\, Bruce Conner: Somebody Else’s Prints (2014)\, Questions from the Sky: New Work by Hung Liu (2013)\, Dive Deep: Eric Fischl and the Process of Painting (2013)\, Ranu Mukherjee: Telling Fortunes (2012)\, and This Kind of Bird Flies Backward: Paintings by Joan Brown (2011). The major retrospective\, Joan Semmel: Skin in the Game is Throckmorton’s most recent exhibition and publication project. \nAbout the exhibition\nEmma Amos: A Color Odyssey | Across her prolific career as a pioneering artist\, educator\, and activist\, Emma Amos (American\, 1937–2020) created boldly colorful and innovative works that explore the intersections of race and gender in American life. This exhibition surveys her body of work from the 1950s to the 2010s for the first time\, spotlighting her inventive approach to printmaking\, painting\, and weaving as well as her signature practice of combining distinctive materials and artistic techniques. All programs are non-refundable. \n\nAbout Kate Haw\nFrom 2013-2019\, Kate Haw was Director of the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.Leading the world’s largest resource for the study of American art\, she set the direction for collecting\, preservation\, and dissemination of a growing collection of more than 30 million documents and nearly 2\,500 oral histories\, providing leadership in the field on emerging research trends and adoption of digital tools in the study of art history. Under her leadership\, the Archives significantly expanded its holdings on first-wave feminist\, African American\, Latinx\, and LGBTQ artists and built an endowment to ensure worldwide digital access to these materials. \nPrior to joining the Smithsonian\, Kate held curatorial roles at the National Gallery of Art and the American Federation of Arts\, where she helped to organize exhibitions including Johannes Vermeer; Georges de La Tour and His World\, Gerard Ter Borch; Degas and the Dance; American Impressionists Abroad and at Home; and The Sensuous and the Sacred: Chola Bronzes from South India. In 2004 she transitioned to fundraising and institutional leadership\, serving as Director of External Affairs at the American Federation of Arts from 2004-2006 before becoming Co-Director of the renowned Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in New York and Maine from 2006-2011. The exhibition Afro-Atlantic Histories explores this enduring legacy through a wide range of works of art inspired by the historical experiences and cultural formations of Black and African people since the 17th century. More than 130 powerful works\, including paintings\, sculpture\, photographs\, and time-based media by artists from Africa\, Europe\, the Americas\, and the Caribbean\, bring these narratives to life. Fletcher is responsible for guiding the museum’s collection of African American art. Prior to joining the National Gallery\, Fletcher worked at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, where she oversaw the presentation of such major traveling exhibitions as Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power and Odyssey: Jack Whitten Sculpture\, and began the co-organization of the U.S. iteration of Afro-Atlantic Histories\, an exhibition that was first conceived and presented by the Museum de Arte São Paulo in Brazil. The exhibition was displayed at the MFA\, Houston in fall 2021/winter 2022 and is now open at the National Gallery. Fletcher has published essays in books and journals and presented research at international conferences on Afro-diasporic art as it relates to politics of the body\, gender\, and labor as well as aesthetics and the avant-garde. Institutions where she previously worked include the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, The Museum of Modern Art\, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art. Since 2013\, she has curated an ongoing video art series for Landmarks public art program at the University of Texas at Austin. Fletcher received a B.A. in English Literature from Rutgers University-New Brunswick\, an M.A. in Latin American Studies with concentrations in Art History and Brazilian Studies from University of Texas at Austin\, and a PhD in History of Art from Cornell University. \n \nMolly Donovan is curator of contemporary art at the National Gallery of Art\, where she has worked since 1993. Together with NGA colleagues Kanitra Fletcher and Steven Nelson\, Molly has co-curated Afro-Atlantic Histories which opened on April 10\, 2022\, at the National Gallery following its debut at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, and an earlier iteration in São Paulo\, Brazil. Donovan’s notable recent projects include the monographic exhibition of work by Lynda Benglis\, drawn from the National Gallery’s collections which just closed in January\, and the major show featuring British sculptor Rachel Whiteread\, on which she collaborated with Tate Britain\, where it opened in London in 2017 before traveling to Vienna\, Austria\, Washington\, DC\, and ultimately to the Saint Louis Art Museum in 2019. Additional exhibitions that Donovan organized include In the Tower: Barbara Kruger (2016 – 2017); Warhol: Headlines\, which opened in Washington in 2011 before it travelled to Frankfurt\, Rome\, and Pittsburgh; and Christo and Jeanne Claude’s in the Vogel Collection in Washington and La Jolla in 2002. In 2016\, Donovan inaugurated thematic installations for the contemporary collection of the National Gallery\, including “Bodies of Work\,” “Flow\,” and “Markers and Signs.”  Her acquisitions for the National Gallery of Art have reshaped its collection to include more works by living artists\, particularly women and people of color. Molly has written and lectured on numerous artists (in addition to the aforementioned)—including Janine Antoni\, Byron Kim\, Kimsooja\, Glenn Ligon\, Richard Tuttle\, and Ursula von Rydingsvard—and on the subject of art in public space. She holds a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in 20th century art from the Graduate Program in the History of Art at Williams College\, and a BA in English from Georgetown University.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an art tour in Alexandria\, VA led by Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Curator of Exhibitions Leslie Mounaime.  \n\n\n\nWe will meet at Old Town Alexandria Waterfront Park to view and learn more about the “I Love You” public art installation by Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt of R&R STUDIO. From there we will make our way into the Torpedo Factory to see Target Gallery’s solo exhibition “LE DRIP: The Uncontainable Sauce of Black Essence” by artist Blu Murphy. Attendees will enjoy a private talk with the artist to learn more about the exhibition and her process. Getting There Driving / Ride-share - There is garage and street parking available\, as well as free 2 hour street parking further down Union St by Founders Park (other side of the TFAC). Metro - You may travel via the blue or yellow line metro and get off at the King St Metro station. There is a free trolley that will come pick people up and drop them off at City Hall which is about 2/3 blocks away from the TFAC. It’s about a 20 minute walk on foot from King St Station. Water Taxi - The water taxi will drop you off at the harbor directly behind the Torpedo Factory\, simply exit to the left and walk toward Waterfront Park with the large “I Love You” installation (about 400-500 ft). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\nLeslie Mounaime (she/her) is an art historian and curator with a master’s in art history with a focus in contemporary art and post-colonialist theory from George Mason University. As a curator she is interested in themes of identity and our relationships with ourselves\, other people\, and the world around us. Leslie has been the Curator of Exhibitions at the Torpedo Factory Art Center since 2016\, where she focuses on supporting emerging and mid-career artists with professional exhibition opportunities. In addition to this\, she manages the Post-Graduate Residency artist program\, an artist residency that supports recently graduated BFA or MFA students with studio space and networking opportunities. Prior to that\, she worked in contemporary art venues such as Artisphere and Art Whino. She also earned a bachelor’s in art history from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been a member of ArtTable DC since 2018. \nBrandy “Blu” Murphy (she/her) is a Washington\, D. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable in Washington\, DC for a BreakfastTable program with Adah Rose Bitterbaum\, owner and Director of the Adah Rose Gallery in Kensington\, Maryland. She will discuss her professional career path and experience with commercial galleries and contemporary artists. \n\n\n\nAdah Rose Gallery was founded in September of 2011 as a place to exhibit contemporary art in a variety of mediums with a specialty in text based work. The gallery is a dynamic place and hosts artists talks\, panels on issues in the art world\, maintains an active intern program and shows art in a variety of spaces including law firms\, pop ups and a number of Art Fairs each year including PULSE New York\, PULSE Miami\, Context\, Art Miami New York\, Silicon Valley Art Fair and the Dallas Art Fair. The gallery also works with emerging artists and showcases the work of recent MFA graduates in a number of shows each year. The gallery is “user friendly.” We embrace technology\, books\, zines\, fonts\, logos\, music\, film\, aesthetics\, signage\, drawing\,painting\, screen printing\, sculpture\, computers and photography. The gallery hopes to create a shared culture and a broad one and values the ideas\, comments and critiques of visitors. \n\n\n\nPrior to founding the gallery\, Adah Rose worked as the Director of Studio Gallery in Dupont Circle for almost four years. Adah Rose has worked as an independent curator for the past 8 years. Berry is responsible for engaging the greater DC community\, developing public programming\, managing the operations and staff of the Museum\, and collaborating with the Rubells and Valadez to oversee the Museum’s installations and exhibitions. Prior to joining the Museum\, Berry served as Director of the Cody Gallery at Marymount University in Arlington\, VA\, where she curated exhibitions such as Nekisha Durrett: Magnolia\, Dave Eassa: People and Places You Don’t Know How to Know and co-curated Jennie Lea Knight: Women of Jefferson Place\, alongside John Anderson and Meaghan Kent. Independently\, she curated Eric Uhlir: Before\, After and In Between\, and Joseph Shetler: Pursuit of Nothing at Culture House DC. Berry’s areas of focus include the Washington Color School\, Mid-Century African American\, and contemporary art. A champion of local artists\, she curated the 2019 and co-curated the 2020 editions of Art Night\, an annual exhibition and fundraiser to support the Washington Project for the Arts (WPA). \nBerry has served as an independent contemporary art advisor to various private and public collections. She also held the role of Director at Hemphill Fine Arts\, one of DC’s leading art galleries with an emphasis on local emerging\, mid-career\, and established artists. Berry is a member of ArtTable. Please join us in conversation with Haili about her career journey and current projects. \n\n\n\nHaili Francis is an scholar\, artist\, and Harvard-trained cultural producer with specialties in African American and contemporary art. While pursuing her bachelor of fine arts at the University of Southern California\, she completed a Getty Multicultural Internship at the California African American Museum and studied abroad in a fine arts program in Italy. She also received a graduate certificate in nonprofit management from USC and served on the Museum Services Council at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from 2009-2011. Haili has worked extensively with the Kinsey Foundation for Arts and Education and their award-winning private African American art collection\, The Kinsey African American Art and History Collection. \n\n\n\nAs a museum practitioner at the Smithsonian\, Haili has worked in fundraising\, board management\, and creative projects such as the nationally touring exhibitions\, Men of Change: Power. Triumph\, Truth.\, Robert Blackburn & Modern Printmaking\, and Negro Motorist Green Book. Her dedication to arts leadership and public service led to an appointment to the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Board in 2016 by Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington\, DC\, in which Haili helped steward a $30M annual budget for arts funding in the nation’s capital. Her commitment to inclusive practices within the cultural sector led to an invitation from the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) to serve on the 2017 National Program Committee for the annual Museum Conference under the theme\, “Gateways for Understanding: Diversity\, Equity\, Accessibility\, and Inclusion.” Currently\, Haili leads the advancement department at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and writes about contemporary Black diasporic art\, culture and fashion in Folklife Magazine. \n\n\n\nHaili taught the inaugural African American Art History I & II courses at Trinity Washington University and is an alumna of the Getty Leadership Institute and AAM/Getty Career Management Fellowship. As associate curator\, curator of modern and contemporary art\, and then chief curator/deputy director\, she spent her first 20 years organizing exhibitions and publications of contemporary women artists. \n\n\n\nSterling assumed the directorship of the museum in 2008. During her tenure the museum has flourished\, regularly receiving the highest Charity Navigator rating of 4 stars for sound fiscal and programmatic management. Sterling also has re-energized the Museum’s programming and profile through an institutional re-brand\, which includes the popular #5womenartists social media campaign\, and the groundbreaking Women Arts and Social Change public programs initiative. She is currently involved in plans for a major renovation of the museum and a $55 million capital campaign\, to be announced in May 2021. \n\n\n\nA life-long champion of women through the arts\, Sterling has received National Orders of Merit from Brazil and Norway. She also serves as arts faculty for Leadership Arlington and has served as a university guest lecturer and conference panelist on topics such as creativity\, museum fundraising\, arts social media\, and volunteering. \nShe holds a BA in Art History and an MA in Museum Studies from Syracuse University\, as well as a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Case Western Reserve University. \nAmanda Jirón-Murphy joined the museum in 2020\, first as a contract curator then as Curator & Resident Artist/Collector Liaison in 2022. In her role\, Amanda curates the resident artists’ exhibitions\, manages the artist residency program\, and the museum’s collectors’ program\, a public program sharing knowledge about art collecting and supporting artists careers. \nIn addition\, Amanda organized the museum’s 2021 exhibition We Can’t Predict Tomorrow\, which explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on artistic practice within the regional contemporary arts sector.Amanda has served as the Gallery Director at Hamiltonian\, where she directed and curated exhibitions\, art fairs\, and projects for an international roster of over forty emerging and mid-career artists and as the Coordinator of Public Programs and Adult Interpretation at the Phillips Collection in Washington\, DC. She also interned with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice\, Italy. \nAmanda has also served as a guest speaker and panel moderator at cultural institutions and schools around the Washington\, DC area and has written for many publications including: The Rib and DIRT DMV. She holds a BA in Art History from John Cabot University in Rome\, Italy and an MA in Modern and Contemporary Art and Connoisseurship from Christie’s Education in London\, England. \nBlair Murphy joined the museum in 2018 as Curator of Exhibitions\, where she shapes the vision for the exhibitions program and curates numerous exhibitions. Previous exhibitions include: Take a Number: Artists and Bureaucracy\, Stretched\, Applied Forces\,  Transitional Objects\, Over\, Under\, Forward\, Back\, and By Proxy\, the museum’s first virtual exhibition. In addition\, she launched the museum’s biennial exhibition series\, Assembly\, in 2019 and Global Spotlight\, a new series focused on international artists\, in 2022. She also served as Acting Executive Director of the museum from October 2020 to May 2021. \nPreviously\, Blair served as the Managing Director at DC Arts Center\, Adjunct Faculty at George Mason University\, and Program Director at Washington Project for the Arts. She holds a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and an MA from Georgetown University. \nAbout MoCA Arlington\nThe Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (formerly Arlington Arts Center) is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit museum that enriches community life by connecting the public with contemporary art and artists through exhibitions\, education programs\, and an artists-in-residence program. It was founded by artists in 1974 and has been housed since 1976 in a historic school building. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable in Washington\, DC for February’s BreakfastTable program with Adriana Ospina\, Director of the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States. We will tour the museum and have coffee and a light breakfast. Adriana will discuss her work at the AMA\, including unique aspects of directing and curating at an institution focused on cultural diplomacy. \n\n\n\nAdriana Ospina is the Director of the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States\, as well as an ArtTable member. Since 2007\, she has held the position of Educational Program Manager and\, since 2014\, Curator of the Permanent Collection. She has curated numerous exhibitions; among them are Fusion: Tracing Asian Migration to the Americas; Femininity Beyond Archetypes: Photography by Natalia Arias; A Gaze through the CINTAS Fellowship Program; A Selection of Works from the CINTAS Foundation; Arts of the Americas; and No Ocean Between Us: Art of Asian Diasporas in Latin America & The Caribbean 1945-Present. She has also co-curated exhibitions including Visual Memory: Home + Place; and Dialog: Landscape and Abstraction | Freya Grand and AMA Permanent Collection. Ospina edited the book “Collection of the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States” (OAS\, 2017). She participated in the College Art Association Conference in 2013 and 2020. Ospina holds an MA in Art History from George Mason University. \n\n\nThe Art Museum of the Americas building\, completed in 1912\, was designed by Paul Cret and Albert Kelsey as the residence of the Directors General of the Pan American Union\, later the Secretaries General of the Organization of American States. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a tour of “The Outwin: American Portraiture Today” before it closes at the end of February. This one-hour tour will be led by Curator Taína Caragol. The triennial juried exhibition features 42 portraits selected through an open call\, by artists working across the United States and Puerto Rico. The pieces\, including those by prize winners Alison Elizabeth Taylor and Elsa Maria Melendez\, explore a wide range of media and convey a multitude of life experiences. \n\n\n\nThis program is open to ArtTable members only for $10 each. Click here for directions from any location. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curator\nTaína Caragol is Curator of painting\, sculpture\, and Latinx art and history at the National Portrait Gallery. Her scholarship focuses on Latinx and Latin American art and its institutional and market validation\, as well as on the recovery of histories suppressed by colonialism. Since her hiring in 2013 she has significantly increased the representation of Latinx historical figures and artists at the Portrait Gallery\, through approximately 200 acquisitions and by curating or co-curating exhibitions such as One Life: Dolores Huerta\, UnSeen: Our Past in a New Light\, Ken Gonzales-Day and Titus Kaphar\, and The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today. She is the director of the Portrait Gallery’s triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2022\, and co-curator of the resulting The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today with Leslie Ureña. \nUpcoming exhibitions also include 1898: US Imperial Visions and Revisions\, a show co-curated with Kate Clarke Lemay\, which will offer a critical examination of the events that turned the US into a world power with overseas territories. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a private tour of the exhibition\, A SKY SHATTERED GLASS REFLECTED BY THE SHINING SUN\, on view at Culture House\, with opening remarks by Cicie Sattarnilasskorn\, Culture House’s Gallery Director and a private artist-led tour of the exhibition with Stephanie Mercedes.  \n\n\n\nThe materials employed in the exhibition are both profound and striking\, ranging from melted bullets and destroyed weapons to soap\, wax\, and seeds. Under her leadership the Museum has developed Jazz at the Kreeger\, a series that spotlights area musicians\, created The Collaborative\, an exhibition program that supports visual and performing artists working in Washington DC\, and expanded innovative and inclusive family program offerings. In addition to presenting group exhibitions in 2020 and 2021\, the Museum presented two exhibitions in 2022 for legendary printmaker\, Lou Stovall\, illustrating and acknowledging Stovall’s profound and far-reaching influence on the Washington arts community and city. Chason holds an Ed.M. from Harvard University and has lived in Washington\, DC since 1980. \n  \n\n\n\nK. Lorraine Graham writes poems and texts that occasionally manifest as drawings\, games and performances. She is the author of The Rest is Censored (Bloof Books)\, Terminal Humming (Edge Books) and numerous zines\, including Semiotic Squares (Primary Writing)\, a book of drawings\, and My Little Neoliberal Pony (Insert Blanc Press). Graham earned an M.F.A. from the University of California\, San Diego is an artist at STABLE Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, where she also lives. \n \n \n \n\nGail Shaw-Clemons\, born in Washington\, DC\, received her Masters’ Degree in printmaking from the University of Maryland. She is a printmaker\, mixed media\, and art activist. She has exhibited extensively\, with many works included in public and private collections in the USA\, Brazil\, Norway\, Sweden\, China and the Republic of Ireland. Her work is also in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Library of Congress\, and the Banneker-Douglass Museum. Shaw-Clemons has a studio at Stable Art and prints at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Studio in New York as well as the Pyramid Printmaking Studio in Hyattsville MD. Recently retired as an art instructor from the United Nations International School in New York\, She is currently an adjunct professor at Bowie State University in Maryland. \n  \n\n\n\nKatherine Tzu-Lan Mann creates large scale paintings and paper installations that examine mythology\, identity\, and landscape. She is the recipient of the Sustainable Arts Foundation grant\, a Fulbright grant\, the AIR Gallery and Lower East Side Printshop Keyholder Fellowships\, and the Mayor’s Award and Hamiltonian Fellowship in Washington\, DC. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Chryssa & New York at Dia Chelsea led by exhibition curator Megan Holly Witko. Co-organized by Dia Art Foundation and the Menil Collection\, Chryssa & New York is the first comprehensive survey of works by Greek-born artist Chryssa (1933–2013) to take place in North America since 1982. A leading figure of the New York art world in the 1950s and ’60s\, Chryssa developed an innovative approach to activating sculptural surfaces through subtle manipulations of light and shadow. Pathbreaking in its use of signage\, text\, and neon\, her vastly under-recognized body of work bridges Pop\, Conceptual\, and Minimalist ideas of art making. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning conversation and gallery tour with Mary Early\, Director of HEMPHILL Artworks\, featuring the exhibition: Prints & Works on Paper.Prints and Works on Paper (March 18 – May 6\, 2023)The 19 artists presented in Prints & Works on Paper worked from the mid-1930s through 2014. While the work spans almost a century\, it was made within the shared social and political context of the Black experience in America. These artists did not perceive a line where activism ended and art began. Believing that pictures could make a difference\, they were invested in advocating for justice\, empowerment\, and community through education; the intentionality of creating editioned prints in a workshop setting reflects this dedication. Printmaking facilitated a wider distribution of their messages\, allowing artists to be deliberate about connection and reaching a larger audience. Imagery portraying a rich social life offered viewers positive self-representation\, verity\, and aspiration for the future. The private collection of 38 works passionately assembled over a 30-year period\, is honest in content and impressive in technique\, both captivating the audience and effectively conveying the artworks’ significance. She studied visual art\, film\, and video at Bennington College\, and her work has been exhibited at the United States Botanic Garden\, Washington Project for the Arts\, the Corcoran Gallery of Art\, Second Street Gallery (Charlottesville\, VA)\, Hemphill Fine Arts (Washington DC\,) the Austrian Cultural Forum (Washington DC)\, Galerie Im Ersten (Vienna\, Austria)\, Kloster Schloss Salem (Salem\, Germany)\, Kunstlerbund Tubingen (Tubingen\, Germany)\, the American University Museum (Washington DC)\, and the Sun Valley Museum of Art (Ketchum\, ID). Early’s work is included in the collections of the US Department of State/Embassy of Panama and Embassy of Jordan\, the District of Columbia Art Bank\, the American University Museum (Corcoran Collection). She is a recipient of the Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on Arts & Humanities\, Washington DC (2022\, 2020\, 2019\, 2018\, 2017\, 2016\, 2015\, 2014\, 2011\, 2009\, 2007). \n\n\n\nEarly is the director of HEMPHILL Artworks\, Washington\, DC\, and serves on the boards of Hamiltonian Artists and Washington Sculptors Group. She handles the work of contemporary artists and artist estates\, including William Christenberry (Estate)\, Colby Caldwell\, Jacob Kainen (Estate)\, Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi\, Mingering Mike\, Robin Rose\, Renée Stout\, Alma Woodsey Thomas\, Julie Wolfe\, Workingman Collective. She specializes in the artists of the Washington Color School. Early works with living artists and artists’ heirs on long-range planning\, and with private and institutional collectors to build and manage significant collections. She has a particular interest in public art and community engagement\, the materials and processes of contemporary sculpture\, and professional development for emerging and under-represented artists. \n\n\n\nABOUT HEMPHILL \n\n\n\nHEMPHILL Artworks opened in Washington DC in September\, 1993. The exhibition schedule features contemporary art ranging in media from emerging to mid-career and established artists. In addition to these shows\, the gallery mounts exhibitions of historically-significant artwork and socially relevant subjects. The diversity of this schedule is designed to showcase important talent and provide artwork that appeals to a broad range of interests. \n\n\n\nFrom its beginnings\, HEMPHILL has advised corporate and private collectors. This initial client base was built upon contacts and experiences gained in academia\, with private galleries\, and with architectural and design firms. HEMPHILL’s consulting and advisory work has expanded to include companies and individuals worldwide. HEMPHILL offers collectors the chance to experience a broad range of aesthetic experiences both through the gallery exhibition program and through private viewing opportunities. It also provides an opportunity to be directly involved in the artists’ community as well as the creative process. \n\n\n\nSpecial events include the ongoing ART TALKS series\, artist book signings\, and charitable vents for area nonprofits. Begun in 1998\, the ART TALKS series includes educational lectures on topics such as collecting for beginners\, artist talks\, and panel discussions on issues in contemporary art. In 2020\, HEMPHILL inaugurated a new gallery space in Washington’s historic Mount Vernon Square neighborhood. Featuring an open gallery floor plan and glass partitions that invite guests into the office area\, the design allows for increased interaction and conversation. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special private tour of Phillip Guston Now exhibit at the National Gallery of Art with Senior Educator Nathalie Ryan. The exhibition charts the 50-year career of one of America’s most influential modern artists through more than 150 paintings and drawings. Guston’s story is one of epic change—of artistic styles\, from muralism to abstract expressionism to figuration\, of degrees of political and social involvement\, and of levels of personal confession in his work. Renowned in his time and in ours\, Guston’s work continues to resonate\, attract\, and provoke\, raising crucial questions about the relationship of art to beauty and brutality\, freedom and doubt\, politics and the imagination.Nathalie A. Ryan has contributed to education programming\, publications\, and exhibitions to the National Gallery of Art since 2002. She has twenty years of demonstrated experience in conceptualizing\, implementing\, and evaluating outcome-based programming for museums and other educational institutions. Nathalie is also an Instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, coaching K-12 teachers and administrators in arts and thinking-centered learning frameworks. Ryan has contributed to education programming\, publications\, and exhibitions to the National Gallery of Art since 2002. She has twenty years of demonstrated experience in conceptualizing\, implementing\, and evaluating outcome-based programming for museums and other educational institutions. Nathalie is also an Instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, coaching K-12 teachers and administrators in arts and thinking-centered learning frameworks. Also\, fun note: Debrah assisted in cataloging the personal collection of the artist Sam Gilliam\, a highlight of her career!.Prior to starting her own business\, Debrah worked as the Assistant Curator for the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery\, the Craft and Decorative Arts branch of the national museum. While employed at the Renwick\, Debrah assisted in the creation of numerous exhibitions and scholarly publications including the monumental 40th anniversary exhibition 40 Under 40: Craft Futures\, and the internationally recognized exhibition WONDER. As of January 1\, 2020\, Debrah became the Washington\, D.C. Regional Representative for Freeman’s Auction\, based in Philadelphia\, PA. DESCRIPTION:Join co-curators Taína Caragol and Kate Lemay for an exclusive tour of “1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions” at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery! “That single year launched the United States on a path that would end with the annexation of Hawaii\, intervention in Cuba\, and the invasions of Puerto Rico\, the Philippines and Guam—profound geopolitical changes resulting from U.S. domination during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) and the Spanish-American War (April to August 1898)\, now often referred to as the War of 1898.”—Maya Wei-Haas\, The Smithsonian Magazine. \n\n\n\nPortraiture is part of how we represent ourselves\, and how we memorialize our historic public figures from the heroic to the problematic. 125 years after this extensive series of conflicts\, the U.S. continues to grapple with its imperial legacy. National Portrait Gallery\, Smithsonian Institution; gift of Aileen Conkey. \n\n\n\nThank you to ArtTable member Laura Roulet for initiating this program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curators \n\n\n\n\nTaína Caragol\, Curator of Painting and Sculpture and Latino Art and History\, joined the National Portrait Gallery in 2013 as the first curator for Latino art and history and her role was expanded to curator of painting and sculpture in 2015. Caragol has led the effort to increase the representation of Latino historical figures and artists at the museum\, adding over 170 portraits to the collection and ensuring that Latino contributions to American history and art are interwoven through the museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, she was the lead curator for “Portraiture Now: Staging the Self\,” which examined the forces that shape identity–from friendships\, to gender dynamics\, and histories of migration–through the work of contemporary Latino artists. In 2015\, she curated “One Life: Dolores Huerta\,” exploring Huerta’s role as co-architect of the farm workers movement with César Chávez. She co-curated “The Face of Battle: Americans at War\, 9/11 to Now” (2017) and “UnSeen: Our Past in a New Light\, Ken Gonzales-Day and Titus Kaphar” (2018).  \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Caragol was the curator of education at Museo de Arte de Ponce\, Puerto Rico\, where she organized the museum’s symposium on Pre-Raphaelite art and led a program of talks with contemporary Puerto Rican artists. She was the Museum of Modern Art’s Latin American bibliographer from 2004-2007\, and she worked as a postdoctoral researcher for Latin American Art in the United Kingdom: History\, Historiography\, Specificity\, 1960 to the Present\, an investigation led by the University of Essex (2007–2008). \n\n\n\nCaragol earned her PhD in art history from the City University of New York. Her dissertation “Boom and Dust: The Rise of Latin American and Latino Art in New York Exhibition Venues and Auction Houses\, 1970s–1980s\,” examined the incubating role of New York City’s alternative museums and art spaces and market during the “Latin American art boom” of the late 1980s. Her essay on Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Barack Obama was published in The Obama Portraits in February 2020 (Princeton University Press / National Portrait Gallery). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKate Clarke Lemay\, Historian\, joined the National Portrait Gallery in 2015. She is a Fulbright Scholar; a Presidential Counselor to the National WWII Museum; and the founding director of PORTAL\, the Portrait Gallery’s scholarly center. Lemay also served as the founding coordinating curator for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. In 2019\, Lemay curated “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence” to usher in the centennial of the U.S. American women’s suffrage anniversary. She published its eponymous catalogue with Princeton University Press which was awarded the 2021 Smithsonian Secretary’s Prize for Excellence in Research and the 2020 Amelia Bloomer Book Award from the American Library Association. \n\n\n\nIn 2017\, Lemay’s first book Triumph of the Dead: American WWII Cemeteries\, Monuments and Diplomacy in France was awarded the Terra Foundation in American Art publication grant. In 2018\, she served as guest editor for The International Journal of Military History and Historiography. She has published essays on art and military history for the University of North Texas Press\, Oxford University Press\, The Strategy Bridge\, Zócalo Public Square\, Reviews in American History\, and the Marine Corps University Press. Lemay’s research has been supported by a Terra Foundation in American Art predoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, a fellowship in American Modernism at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center\, and a fellowship from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at the Caen Mémorial Museum in France. Lemay served as the lead historian for the transformation of the museum’s landmark exhibition “America’s Presidents” (2017). Her other exhibitions include “Marlene Dietrich: Dressed for the Image” (2017). \n\n\n\nBefore joining the National Portrait Gallery\, Lemay was an assistant professor of art history at Auburn University Montgomery and visiting assistant professor of the history of modern and contemporary art at Brigham Young University. She earned a dual PhD in American art history and American studies from Indiana University (Bloomington).
