SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Esther Bubley: Photographing the Homefront" with Sarah Leavitt
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Library of Congress\, Prints & Photographs Division\, Office of War Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable for a Curator-Led Tour of Esther Bubley: Photographing the Homefront with Sarah Leavitt at the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. \n\n\n\nEsther Bubley (1921-1998)\, the daughter of Jewish immigrants\, was a documentary photographer who worked for the Office of War Information during WWII. While in the capital\, she photographed Wilson (now Jackson-Reed) High School students and followed uniformed soldiers throughout the city—to the Loew’s Theater\, Glen Echo amusement park\, and Dissin’s Jewish boarding house\, where her sister lived. Bubley’s evocative black-and-white photographs show us a bustling city welcoming thousands of new residents experiencing urban life. This exhibition pairs dramatic photography with artifacts from the Museum collection that help illustrate this glimpse into the capital city at a critical time in our nation’s history.Learn more about accessibility at the museum here. SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of of the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden and "Light Is a Plastic Medium: Photography of Carlotta Corpron" with Marina Isgro and Betsy Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden reopened to the public on Saturday\, Oct. 31\, 2026\, following a four-year transformation of its 1.3-acre landscape. The revitalized Garden\, which sits immediately on the National Mall\, is able to welcome more passing visitors and display more works from the national collection of modern and contemporary art\, ranging from outdoor sculpture to time-based work to performance art. Nearly sixty sculptures—an increase of 50% from the previous installation—have been installed in the Sculpture Garden and on the Museum’s Plaza within a landscape of almost 30\,000 new trees and plants.  \n\n\n\nLight Is a Plastic Medium: The Photography of Carlotta Corpron is a survey of work by the American abstract photographer and educator whose investigations into the poetics of light and form and innovative use of technology supported the establishment of photography as a fine art. Highlighting her biography and artistic achievements\, the exhibition positions Corpron (1901–1988) in the artistic vanguard through six bodies of photography that she made in Texas from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. The exhibition showcases 48 recent gifts by Herbert Lust to the Hirshhorn\, as well as additional loans from his collection.Learn more about accessibility at the museum here.
