DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a private tour of the Easton Foundation.  \n\n\n\nThe Easton Foundation was established by Louise Bourgeois in the 1980s as a non-profit and charitable organization. Upon her death in 2010\, at the age of 98\, Bourgeois bequeathed her home and an adjacent townhouse to become the Foundation’s offices and donated a substantial collection of her art to its holdings. \n\n\n\nThe Easton Foundation is now dedicated to preserving Bourgeois’s legacy. Serving to promote the scholarship and awareness of Bourgeois’s life and art\, the Foundation aims to cultivate new interpretations of her work while providing a deeper understanding of her artistic process and creative milieu. As part of this mission\, the Foundation has established the Louise Bourgeois Archive\, a study center and residency for curators and scholars\, as well as a sculpture garden and a small exhibition space presenting original archival materials and works from the collection. The Foundation is also undertaking the ongoing conservation of Bourgeois’s distinctive home and studio\, in which she lived and worked for almost 50 years.  \n\n\n\nThis program is open to ArtTable Circle\, Patron\, & Benefactor Members. \n\n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? DESCRIPTION:Sampler c.1789\, Ruthy Rogers.\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable for a Curator-Led Tour of “Locating Girlhood: Place and Identity in Early American “Schoolgirl” Art with Emelie Gevalt\, PhDwilding with Elissa Auther. \n\n\n\nFeaturing spectacular examples of needlework and other ornamental arts made by American girls in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries\, Locating Girlhood: Place and Identity in Early American “Schoolgirl” Art sheds new light on a rich but understudied genre\, offering one of the most significant presentations on the subject in recent memory. This major loan exhibition brings together approximately 100 exceptional objects from over 35 museums and private collections nationwide\, uniting celebrated masterpieces with remarkable lesser-known gems rarely seen by the public. \n\n\n\nUnlike many earlier exhibitions\, Locating Girlhood explores girlhood artworks from an explicitly art historical perspective\, reframing these objects through the lens of place. Though the story of landscape art in the United States has traditionally centered on male academic painters\, American girls and young women were laboring over a variety of landscape scenes long before the Hudson River School. From the eighteenth century onwards\, representations of landscape were a common visual thread in samplers\, needlework pictures\, watercolors\, and other artworks commonly united under the umbrella term “schoolgirl art\,” extending from country scenes and cityscapes to maps and other cartographic compositions. By considering these works as deeply resonant expressions of place\, the exhibition expands the story of the American landscape and situates women at its heart. \n\n\n\nEmelie Gevalt\, PhD\, is the Deborah Davenport and Stewart Stender Deputy Director & Chief Curatorial and Program Officer. \n\n\n\nLearn more about accessibility at the museum here.
