DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual book talk on October 28 with Dr. Vishakha Desai. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book: Over the past decade\, social and political movements transformed the arts. From the streets of Chile and Iran to museums in Europe and the United States\, and from questions of representation and repatriation to demands for equity and justice\, protest and activism affected the creation\, presentation\, and interpretation of visual arts around the world. \n\n\n\nBringing together artists\, scholars\, activists\, and museum professionals from varied fields and backgrounds\, this book explores the intersections between visual art and social movements during the last tumultuous decade. Spanning themes of protest art\, museum ethics\, restitution\, and institutional transformation\, the collection considers how visual arts have both responded to and shaped politics and society. Contributors highlight the role of artists as catalysts for change and delve into how institutions grapple with their colonial pasts. \n\n\n\nDr. Vishakha N. Desai is an internationally recognized scholar\, educator\, and museum leader. She is President Emerita of the Asia Society\, where she previously served as President and CEO. At Columbia University\, she is a Senior Fellow and past Chair of the Committee on Global Thought\, and she served as Senior Advisor for Global Affairs to President Lee Bollinger and Senior Advisor to Columbia Global. In addition to her scholarly publications and exhibition catalogues\, Dr. Desai is the author of an award-winning memoir\, World as Family: A Journey of Multi-Rooted Belongings (Columbia University Press\, 2021) and editor of Politics of Visual Arts in a Changing World\, 2014-2024 (Columbia University Press\, 2026). \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $10\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $15\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Library of Congress\, Prints & Photographs Division\, Office of War Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable for a Curator-Led Tour of Esther Bubley: Photographing the Homefront with Sarah Leavitt at the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. \n\n\n\nEsther Bubley (1921-1998)\, the daughter of Jewish immigrants\, was a documentary photographer who worked for the Office of War Information during WWII. While in the capital\, she photographed Wilson (now Jackson-Reed) High School students and followed uniformed soldiers throughout the city—to the Loew’s Theater\, Glen Echo amusement park\, and Dissin’s Jewish boarding house\, where her sister lived. Bubley’s evocative black-and-white photographs show us a bustling city welcoming thousands of new residents experiencing urban life. This exhibition pairs dramatic photography with artifacts from the Museum collection that help illustrate this glimpse into the capital city at a critical time in our nation’s history.Learn more about accessibility at the museum here. DESCRIPTION:ArtTable’s Curator’s Choice program is a dynamic\, Pecha Kucha-style presentation featuring three curators\, each offering a unique perspective on the artists and works they believe best define the current moment in American art. During the program\, each curator will have 10 minutes to present three to five works of their choosing\, followed by 10 minutes of audience Q&A. The format is fast-paced\, engaging\, and encourages a range of viewpoints while fostering thoughtful conversation among arts professionals. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers: \n\n\n\nAlison Gass is ICA San Francisco’s Founding Executive Director. Her leadership in museums has reflected a sustained commitment to building globally-minded and community-engaged exhibitions programs and diversifying museums’ collections\, exhibition programs\, staff and visitorship. Gass was appointed the Dana Feitler Director of the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago where she launched the Feitler Center for Academic Engagement. Previously\, she was the Chief Curator at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University\, and Assistant Curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. ICA SF isn’t her first “startup” museum. After leaving SFMOMA\, Gass served as Founding Chief Curator at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University\, where she helped launch the new building\, recruited a staff\, and established a global contemporary art program. She holds degrees in Art History from Columbia University and the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. \n\n\n\nAnni A. Pullagura\, PhD\, is the Margaret and Terry Stent Associate Curator of American Art at the High Museum of Art\, where she co-led a major reinstallation of the American galleries in 2026. Previously\, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Yale Center for British Art\, Yale University\, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts\, National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, DC\, and assistant curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. An alum of the Center for Curatorial Leadership\, she has assisted on the organization of several national and international exhibitions\, monographs\, and publications\, and previously served on the Art of the Americas Advisory Think Tank for the Harvard Art Museums. Pullagura holds a doctorate in American Studies from Brown University. Her book manuscript\, Seeing Feeling: Troubling Empathy in American Art\, recasts the museum as the critical ground for engaging with the social and political dimensions of feeling and sentiment in the art encounter. \n\n\n\nClaudia E. Zapata (they/them) earned their Ph.D. in art history at Southern Methodist University’s RASC/a: Rhetorics of Art\, Space\, and Culture program. Their dissertation is titled “Chicano Art is Not Dead: The Politics of Curating Chicano Art in Major U.S. Exhibitions\, 2008-2012.” They received their BA and MA in art history from the University of Texas at Austin\, with a specialization in Maya art of the Classic period (250-900 CE). Zapata was the curator of exhibitions and programs at the Mexic Arte Museum in Austin. They developed several Texas exhibitions\, including A Viva Voz: Carmen Lomas Garza (2009)\, Sam Coronado: A Retrospective (2011)\, and Fantastic & Grotesque: José Clemente Orozco in Print (2014). From 2018-2022\, Claudia was the curatorial assistant of Latinx art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, working on the award-winning exhibition\, ¡Printing the Revolution! Photo by Simon Cherry.\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable for a day trip to New Canaan\, Connecticut. \n\n\n\nOur day begins with an Executive Director & Curator-Led Tour of America Abroad: Art\, Architecture\, and Diplomacy with Laurence Lafforgue at the Onera Foundation. Presented on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States\, the exhibition offers rare public access to artworks typically seen only at US embassies—spaces not generally open to the public—and explores how art and architecture have shaped the United States’ diplomatic presence abroad from the Cold War to today. The exhibition includes works by leading American artists including Carmen Herrera\, Jasper Johns\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Sol LeWitt\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Julie Mehretu\, Martin Puryear\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Joel Shapiro\, Frank Stella\, Carrie Mae Weems and many others. A replica of the 1823 William J. Stone engraving of the Declaration of Independence will also be on view. A parallel section focuses on the evolution of US embassy architecture\, featuring buildings designed by leading midcentury architects such as Edward Durell Stone and Walter Gropius\, alongside more recent contributions by firms including Skidmore\, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and KieranTimberlake\, among others. \n\n\n\nIn the afternoon\, we will visit The Glass House and Galleries for a two hour tour. The tour includes access to 5 structures – the Glass House\, Brick House\, Painting Gallery\, Sculpture Gallery\, and Da Monsta – with a three-quarter mile walk over paths (gravel and paved) and grass. To mark the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth\, The Glass House together with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation proudly presents Tomashi Jackson and Robert Rauschenberg: The Catch One. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, 2024 Jenny Holzer\, member Artists Rights Society (ARS)\, NY Photo: Filip Wolak\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable for a studio visit with Jenny Holzer. \n\n\n\nFor more than forty-five years\, Jenny Holzer has presented her astringent ideas\, arguments\, and sorrows in public places and international exhibitions\, including Times Square\, the Venice Biennale\, the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao\, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Her medium\, whether a T-shirt\, plaque\, or electronic sign\, is writing\, and the public dimension is integral to her work. Starting in the 1970s with her New York City street posters and continuing through her recent light projections on landscape and architecture\, her practice has rivaled ignorance and violence with humor\, kindness\, and courage. Holzer received the Leone d’Oro at the Venice Biennale in 1990\, the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award in 1996\, the rank of officier in France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2016\, the US State Department’s International Medal of Arts in 2017\, and Time magazine’s Time 100 Award in 2024. She holds honorary degrees from Williams College\, the Rhode Island School of Design\, the New School\, and Smith College.
