SUMMARY:AT Tours - Scandinavia Art Experience 2022
DESCRIPTION:Interested in this program? Please email travel@arttable.org for more information.\n\nThe light! In Scandinavia this has been an inspiration for artist throughout the ages. This alone is a reason to visit the splendid art capitals of this region. The art worlds are truly exciting with the new Munch Museum and the Twist in Oslo. Helsinki has its first Biennial this year and as a result the art world is more vibrant than ever. And of course we dive into the wonderful art scene of Copenhagen. Exceptional clean Nordic design and the amazing equally ‘clean’ cuisine are further draws. Add the stunning natural beauty and we have a ‘not-to-be missed’ destination. It is no coincidence that the three countries we will visit are home of the Top-3 of Happiest People in the world. \nITINERARY\nHELSINKI\, FinlandThe Biennial of 2020 (postponed to 2021) really put Helsinki on the art world map. We ‘dive into’ the thriving art scene and see the best it has to offer. We will meet fantastic artists and collectors in their studios and homes. Of course we will include design from the world-renowned Aalto studio. We will enjoy a special behind-the-scenes tour in the Kiasma museum. And in contrast we visit the most beautiful examples of Finnish Jugendstill architecture. \nOSLO\, Norway‘Oslo is Europe’s next great Art Capitol’ according to ARTnews.com. And we agree. The new Munch Museum is set be open this fall. It promises to be a fabulous tribute to the artist and of course we will enjoy a special visit. The Oslo art scene is booming and we include the best galleries\, museums and private collections in the program. We also make a spectacular trip north to visit the Twist Museum and the sculpture garden surrounding it. Then it is time to take in the natural beauty from the water. We board the cruise-ferry and leave Oslo behind with stunning views of the Norwegian fjords. On board we enjoy a great dinner and spend the night in a first class cabin. \nCOPENHAGEN\, DenmarkWe wake up arriving in wonderful Copenhagen. The hugely successful contemporary artist Olafur Elliason was born here and we meet some of his contemporaries. We will visit intriguing private collections. And we will enjoy visits to the Hirschsprung Collection for masterpieces from the Danish Golden Age as well as the fantastic modern and contemporary Louisiana Museum and sculpture garden. There is also time for some great (design) shopping. Of course we will eat what could be the best food you have ever tasted in some of the 25+ Michelin star restaurants of the Danish capital. A fantastic last stop on what promises to be a truly magical tour. \nMonday\, June 13Flight back home or on your way for further experiences….*Subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances \n\nTRIP DETAILS\nDATESJune 4-13\, 2022 \nDURATION9 days / 9 nights \nSTAYPerfectly located luxury hotels; First class cabin on the ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo \nMEALSBreakfast\, lunches\, dinners included (alcohol not included) \nTRAVELIncluded:Local transport by luxury coachFlight from Helsinki to OsloOvernight ferry Oslo to Copenhagen \nNot included:Trans-Atlantic flights  (Artigo will advise on preferred flights) \nPRICING / ROOM TYPES– Single occupancy  – $8\,450– Double occupancy – $7\,750 \nPAYMENT SCHEDULE (Payable to Artigo Tours): \nSeptember 1\, 2021 | 1st payment – $2\,000February 1\, 2022 | 2nd payment – $3\,000April 1\, 2022 | 3rd payment – (dependent on type of room\, see below)– Single Occupancy: $3\,450– Double Occupancy: $2\,750 \nARTTABLE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTION  \nDue by September 1\, 2021Click here to submit payment. \nMembers: $750Guests: $1100 \nAll payments made to ArtTable are final and non-refundable. \nPlease contact ArtTable at travel@arttable.org with any questions. Schleuning has a record of organizing thoughtful exhibitions and programs that are not only high profile and highly popular\, but also recognized for their contributions to scholarship. She has more than two decades of expertise in forming relationships with living designers and artists\, bridging the gap between historical and contemporary design\, and exploring how engaging with art and design can extend beyond museum walls. She is the Margot B. Perot Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the Dallas Museum of Art\, and her recent exhibitions and publications include the upcoming Cartier and Islamic Art: In Search of Modernity\, Electrifying Design: A Century of Lighting\, and Curbed Vanity: A Contemporary Foil by Chris Schanck. \nAs Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Design\, Schleuning oversees the decorative arts and design collection\, internationally recognized as one of the foremost decorative arts collections in the United States. The collection includes more than 8\,000 works of art from the 15th century to the present\, with a strength in European and American decorative arts\, most significantly 18th-century English silver\, 19th- and 20th-century American silver and ceramics\, and modern and contemporary jewelry and design. As the Museum focuses on the expansion of its contemporary holdings\, Schleuning’s deep experience in working with and maintaining relationships with contemporary designers and artist is a significant asset\, as is her interest in connecting design’s past and present. Among her other responsibilities\, Schleuning also oversees the decorative arts and design collection planning\, development\, scholarship\, and acquisitions. \nSchleuning served as Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, from 2011 until 2018. She organized numerous exhibitions\, including two of the 10 most attended exhibitions in the museum’s history. She was co-organizing curator for the nationally touring exhibition Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion\, which broke attendance records and became the eighth most-attended show at the High Museum of Art. Other notable exhibitions that ranged from historical scholarship to pushing the conceived boundaries of what defines a museum exhibition were Technicolor: New Works by Jaime Hayon (2017); Dream Cars: Innovative Design\, Visionary Ideas (2014)\, the 10th most-attended show at the High Museum; Earl Pardon’s Portable Art: Jewelry & Design (2015); and Bangles to Benches: Contemporary Jewelry and Design (2013). From 2013 to 2018\, she curated five dynamic and highly acclaimed designer interventions/playscapes that engages the community by activating the High’s Sifly Piazza\, and through that established the designer-in-residency project. \nPrior to joining the High Museum\, Schleuning served as Curator at The Wolfsonian–Florida International University\, having previously held positions as a Fellowship Coordinator and Assistant Curator at the institution\, where she produced exhibitions\, publications\, and programs with a focus on highlighting the power and impact of art and design in daily life. Before that\, she worked at the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan\, beginning in 2000 as Curatorial Collections Fellow\, advancing to Assistant Curator with a focus on art\, architecture\, craft\, and design. \nSchleuning graduated from Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts. She received her Master of Arts in the History of Decorative Arts from Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in conjunction with Parsons School of Design. In 2015 she was a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership. She frequently contributes to scholarly publications and serves as a leading resource for decorative arts and design\, delivering lectures and speaking at symposiums and public programs throughout the country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImages: Bandeau\, Cartier Paris\, special order\, 1923. SUMMARY:New York | Cristina Iglesias' 'Landscape and Memory' Tour & Reception at Madison Square Park
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person tour of Cristina Iglesias’ Landscape and Memory\, on view at Madison Square Park in New York City. The tour will be led by ArtTable Member Brooke Kamin Rapaport\, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator at Madison Square Park Conservancy. Drinks will also be served. \n\n\n\nSpanish artist Cristina Iglesias invites the public to consider the forgotten terrains and geographic history of New York City in a new public art installation opening this June\, her first major temporary public art project in the United States. Landscape and Memory places five bronze sculptural pools\, flowing with water\, into Madison Square Park’s Oval Lawn\, harkening back to when the Cedar Creek coursed across the land where the park stands today. Building on Iglesias’ practice of unearthing the forgotten and excavating natural history\, Landscape and Memory resurfaces in the imaginations of contemporary viewers the now-invisible force of this ancient waterway. More information about the exhibition can be found below. \n\n\n\nLandscape and Memory is organized by Brooke Kamin Rapaport\, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator; Tom Reidy\, Deputy Director of Finance and Special Projects; and Truth Murray-Cole\, Curatorial Manager. Keats Myer is the Conservancy’s Executive Director. \n\n\n\nThis program is open to ArtTable Members only for $15. Capacity is limited. \n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease review the below before registering:\n\n\n\n Health & Safety Please note that by registering for this event you consent to have your contact information shared with ArtTable to be used in the event that contact tracing is needed. Through the Conservancy\, she established Public Art Consortium\, a national initiative of museum\, public-art-program\, and sculpture park colleagues. In 2019\, she served as Commissioner and Curator of the United States Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition\, La Biennale di Venezia\, with a representation of artist Martin Puryear. \n\n\nRapaport has worked as a museum curator\, independent curator\, and art writer. During her 13-year tenure at the Brooklyn Museum\, she organized numerous exhibitions and wrote corresponding catalogues in her roles as assistant and then associate curator of contemporary art. As part of the Brooklyn Museum’s Grand Lobby series of installations\, she worked with contemporary artists to realize their projects. As guest curator at The Jewish Museum\, New York\, she organized Houdini: Art and Magic (2010)\, an interdisciplinary exhibition on the life and enduring significance to contemporary artists of the magician and escape artist Harry Houdini\, and the retrospective exhibition Louise Nevelson: Constructing a Legend (2007). Rapaport has also held positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, and the Jamaica Arts Center in Queens\, New York. She is a contributing editor and frequent writer for Sculpture magazine and a regular lecturer\, moderator\, panelist\, and catalogue essayist on contemporary art and public art. \n\n\n\nRapaport received her B.A. cum laude in art history from Amherst College and completed her M.A. in art history from Rutgers University. She is also the recipient of a Helena Rubinstein Fellowship in Museum Studies from the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. She sits on the Board of Directors of Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City\, Al Held Foundation\, von Rydingsvard and Greengard Foundation and is Vice President of the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation in New York. She currently serves on the board of the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nCristina Iglesias shapes large-scale\, site-specific sculpture and installations that probe the tension between past and present\, ancient and contemporary. Resisting the asceticism of the Minimalist movement\, Iglesias initially created grid-like structures in natural materials that were suspended to assemble pavilions and architectural spaces. Beginning in the 2000s\, Iglesias began to incorporate water into her permanent outdoor projects and sculptures. \n\n\n\nIglesias’s work has been the subject of solo presentations at museums internationally\, including Centro Botín\, Santander\, Spain (2018); Museo Reina Sofía\, Madrid (2013); Ludwig Museum\, Cologne (2006); Whitechapel Art Gallery\, London (2003); and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York (1997). She additionally has been commissioned to create major projects and installations at Bloomberg headquarters\, London (2017); Fondaciòn Botin\, Santander (2017); Tres Aguas at Toledo\, Spain (2014); Mexican Foundation of Environmental Education\, Baja\, California (2010); Museo del Prado\, Madrid (2007); and Royal Museum of Fine Art\, Antwerp (2006). The Museum of Fine Arts Houston opened Iglesias’ major permanent outdoor commission\, Inner Landscape (the lithosphere\, the roots\, the water) (2020) in front of the new Kinder Building. Last summer she realized Hondalea (2021)\, transforming a lighthouse into a sculpture on Santa Clara Island in the Bay of Donostia\, San Sebastián\, Spain. \n\n\n\nIglesias represented Spain at the Venice Biennale (1986\, 1993) and at the Biennale of Sydney (1990\, 2012); at the Carnegie International\, Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh (1995); the Taipei Biennial (2003); at the SITE Santa Fe Biennial (2006); and at the Folkstone Triennal (2011). \n\n\n\nIglesias was born in San Sebastián\, Northern Spain in November 1956. She studied Chemical Sciences in the University of the Basque Country (1976 – 1978)\, and ceramics and sculpture at the Chelsea College of Art in London (1980 – 1982). She was granted a Fulbright scholarship to study at Pratt Institute (1988) and was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste\, Munich (1995). \n\n\n\nHer studio is in Madrid\, Spain. \n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition (Continued)\n\n\n\nFor Landscape and Memory\, Iglesias digs deep into the park’s lawns to install five subterranean bronze sculptures carved with intricately patterned bas-reliefs. A subtle stream of water continuously trails across the sculptures’ hollowed surfaces. This evokes the constancy of water slowly eroding rocky surfaces across millennia. The installation conjures the existence of unseen ancient streams that continue to run beneath modern cities\, connecting the urban present with its primordial past. It connects us to abstract ideas of what lies beneath. \n\n\n\nNodding to historian Simon Schama’s major 1995 volume of the same name\, which surveyed the history of landscape across time and terrain\, Landscape and Memory is informed by Iglesias’ research into the history of the site. For the project\, Iglesias located and studied historic maps that document the water flow through Madison Square Park\, where the Cedar Creek once coursed. With nineteenth-century industrialization\, streams like the Cedar were buried underground to create additional land for building sites\, underground drains\, or sewers. Through Landscape and Memory\, Iglesias renders this history visible again\, inviting viewers to contemplate centuries of transformation of urban sites that were once natural. \n\n\n\nAbout Madison Square Park Conservancy\n\n\n\nMadison Square Park Conservancy cultivates and enlivens Madison Square Park\, a dynamic seven-acre public park in New York City’s Flatiron District and one of the city’s most treasured green spaces. Through its public art commissions\, horticultural stewardship\, and engaging programming\, the nonprofit creates an urban oasis that welcomes a diverse community of over 60\,000 visitors each day. Keats Myer is the Conservancy’s Executive Director. \n\n\n\nSince 2004\, the Conservancy has become a leader in commissioning new works of public art\, curating and presenting over 40 major site-specific installations and solo exhibitions through its art programming. Led by Brooke Kamin Rapaport\, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator\, the program invites leading artists to push the boundaries of their practice and create risk-taking new works that experiment with materiality\, scale\, and theme in response to the park’s unique environment. The ambition of the commissioning program expands each year alongside the diverse range of innovative artists including Diana Al-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Maya Lin\, Iván Navarro\, Martin Puryear\, Arlene Shechet\, Ursula von Rydingsvard\, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, the Conservancy served as the commissioning institution for the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, marking the first time that an organization whose visual art program focuses exclusively on public art has received this honor. With Rapaport serving as Commissioner\, the Conservancy presented new work by Martin Puryear. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: Cristina Iglesias overseeing the installation of Landscape and Memory\, courtesy of Madison Square Park Conservancy

SUMMARY:New York | Curator’s Talk with Cecilia Alemani\, Artistic Director of the 59th Venice Biennale\, on “The Milk of Dreams”
DESCRIPTION:The James Howell Foundation and ArtTable present a special curator’s talk with Cecilia Alemani\, Artistic Director of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia\, on this edition’s theme: “The Milk of Dreams.” Alemani will be in conversation with Laura Bardier\, Executive Director of the James Howell Foundation. \n\n\n\nOrganized around Leonora Carrington’s The Milk of Dreams\, the exhibition reflects on what it means to be human today. It focuses on three thematic areas in particular: the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses; the relationship between individuals and technologies; and the connection between bodies and the Earth. \n\n\n\nThis program is free and open to ArtTable Circle\, Board\, and Executive level members only. Registration is required. ArtTable Circle and Board members receive priority registration. Registration for Executive level members will open on Wednesday\, June 8\, 2022. \n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease review the below before registering:\n\n\n\n Health & Safety Face masks are optional though recommended inside the gallery. Please note that by registering for this event you consent to have your contact information shared with the James Howell Foundation and ArtTable to be used in the event that contact tracing is needed. Accessibility The James Howell Foundation is wheelchair accessible. If you would like more information about accessibility or need particular accommodations for this program\, please email Haley at programs@arttable.org. Getting There The James Howell Foundation is located in the West Village neighborhood of New York City. The nearest subway station is Christopher Street (1 and 2 trains). The exact address will be shared with attendees upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Cecilia Alemani\n\n\n\nCecilia Alemani is an Italian curator based in New York. Currently\, she is the Artistic Director of the upcoming 59th International Art Exhibition (2022) in Venice. Since 2011\, she has been the Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art\, the public art program presented by the High Line in New York. In 2018\, Alemani served as Artistic Director of the inaugural edition of Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires. In 2017\, she curated the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. \n\n\n\nAbout the James Howell Foundation\n\n\n\nThe James Howell Foundation is a proud sponsor of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia “The Milk of Dreams.” The James Howell Foundation supports Howell’s vision of committed investigation of like-minded endeavors through a variety of professional programs and projects. The Foundation creates and furthers philanthropic initiatives that empower art professionals\, curators and artists\, as a contribution to cultural and humanistic advancement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Milk of Dreams\n\n\n\n“The Milk of Dreams” takes its title from a book by Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) in which the Surrealist artist describes a magical world where life is constantly re-envisioned through the prism of the imagination. The exhibition The Milk of Dreams takes Leonora Carrington’s otherworldly creatures\, along with other figures of transformation\, as companions on an imaginary journey through the metamorphoses of bodies and definitions of the human. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is grounded in many conversations with artists held in the last few years. The questions that kept emerging from these dialogues seem to capture this moment in history when the very survival of the species is threatened\, but also to sum up many other inquiries that pervade the sciences\, arts\, and myths of our time. How is the definition of the human changing? What constitutes life\, and what differentiates plant and animal\, human and non-human? What are our responsibilities towards the planet\, other people\, and other life forms? And what would life look like without us? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to ArtTable Board member Laura Bardier for organizing this program. \n\n\n\nImage: Cecilia Alemani; Cover art for the 59th Venice Biennale Catalog

Click here to get directions from your location. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nBorn in Washington and raised in Idaho\, Sara Schroeder is a contemporary painter currently living in Miami\, Florida. She dedicated time to her formal fine art education until 1998\, when she decided to take an extended break to raise young children. She has since furthered her education and established her artistic practice. In her works\, Schroeder explores the interplay between corporeal experience and ethereal space through highly gestural and bright abstract paintings. In 2019\, the Miami Design Preservation League selected Schroeder as the Art Deco Museum’s “Featured Local Artist\,” and in 2021 she was chosen as Alto’s Featured Miami Artist for the luxury ride-share company’s “Alto + The Arts” initiative. Schroeder’s work is collected by many art enthusiasts and has been included in multiple group exhibitions across Florida. \n\n\n\nAbout the Taking Up Space Initiative & From Here to There\n\n\n\nJamie Smith of Thrive Artist Network and Kaylan Buteyn of Artist/Mother Network co-launched the Taking Up Space Initiative. As part of this initiative\, female artists are challenged to put on solo or group shows in their communities to actively take up space within the world. Within this context\, Sara Schroeder’s exhibition focuses on the passage of time from the onset of the Covid pandemic until now. It investigates interactions and conversations between physical and emotional experiences. \n\n\n\nEach of the 100 small mixed media works on paper represents one such conversation\, expressed through the abstract interplay of two forms of information. Holistically\, the continuous body of work presents a narrative of the “there” of intuition and senses\, and the “here” of our immediacy and awareness. \n\n\n\nTo Schroeder\, seeing how world events affected her sense of stability\, and watching her temperament and her understanding of her painting vocabulary transform over time\, is a reminder that every individual has their own story. With this awareness\, the artist created works that built on the idea of continuously moving forward\, with glimpses of ideas and small steps moving us along towards a larger whole. \n\n\n\n“From There To Here is a visual journey through one of the strangest times in my own life and in the history of the world\,” says Sara Schroeder. “Showing this collection feels like sharing hope and encouragement\, and I’m thrilled to be doing it at Art at the Citadel and under the umbrella of the Taking Up Space Initiative\, joining hundreds of female artists around the world to do exactly that: contribute a small piece to help build something massive.”

Prompt arrival is necessary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the artist\n\n\n\nChristine Bourdette is a Portland\, Oregon-based visual artist who maintains studio and public art practices. Her studio work includes sculpture\, drawing\, prints\, and installation. Over the course of her career she has cultivated a three-dimensional vocabulary incorporating a wide repertoire of materials and a dedication to craft. She has simultaneously built an expansive drawing practice that feeds and is fed by her sculptor’s sensibilities. Bourdette’s work has commented on social\, political\, or simply human predicaments\, often seasoned with compassion and humor.  \n\n\n\nGeologic features and fracturing earth\, the land as an uneasy topography\, informs her recent work. She views the accretions\, erosion\, and metamorphosis of Earth throughout geologic time as inversely analogous to our relatively compacted experience as human beings. The cumulative distortions\, upheavals\, erratic shifting of terrain\, seem to her as metaphors for this era we inhabit\, for a sense of surviving instability through instability. Though they reflect qualities of landforms\, she considers her works to occupy a zone between representation and abstraction; it utilizes the transformation and synthesis of materials imagery\, and ideas\, essentially aestheticizing the residue of earthly fragility and decomposition and\, in turn\, the potential for regeneration. \n\n\n\nBourdette earned her BA from Lewis and Clark College where she studied art and languages. She was the first recipient of the Bonnie Bronson Fellowship\, and has received a Visual Artist Fellowship from the Regional Arts & Culture Council and a Golden Spot award from The Ford Family Foundation. She has held residencies at Playa\, Caldera\, the Ucross Foundation\, and the Tamarind Institute. \n\n\n\nBourdette has exhibited in the United States and France\, including solo exhibitions at Elizabeth Leach Gallery (Portland\, OR)\, The Art Gym at Marylhurst University (Portland\, OR)\, The Tyler Museum of Art (Tyler\, TX)\, Kittredge Gallery\, University of Puget Sound (Tacoma\, WA)\, Klein Gallery (Chicago\, IL)\, The Alexandria Museum\, (Alexandria\, LA)\, and Galerie L’Aire du Verseau (Paris\, France). Her sculpture and drawings are in many public and private collections nationwide. Bourdette has also completed public art commissions in Oregon\, Washington\, North Carolina\, Arizona\, and Florida. Her art has been featured in Sculpture magazine and reviewed in Art in America\, Artweek\, and Visions Quarterly. She frequently collaborates on visual design for performance\, dance\, and film\, including the animated short film\, Bunnyheads\, with filmmaker Jim Blashfield. She is represented by the Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland\, Oregon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImages: Christine Bourdette\, Simmer\, 2021; graphite\, water-soluble pigment and pigment-based ink on paper; Courtesy of the artist and Elizabeth Leach Gallery / Christine Bourdette\, Shift\, 2021; vellum and pigment based ink; Courtesy of the artist and Elizabeth Leach Gallery \n\n\nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. The Pollock-Krasner Foundation has been a leader in providing grants enabling emerging and established artists to focus on their work. Funding helps artists to create new work\, acquire art supplies\, rent studio space\, and prepare exhibitions. The Foundation also provides grants to organizations that directly engage with artists\, such as artist residency programs. Please visit www.pkf.org for more information.

Through one-on-one mentoring relationships at select museums and cultural organizations\, fellows have the opportunity to work with established leaders and gain exposure to a range of professional activities. \nThe 2022 ArtTable Fellows\nCheyene Adams | The Studio Museum in Harlem | New York\, NYLara Arafeh | The Baltimore Museum of Art | Baltimore\, MDAlexandria Bingham | Capital One Art Program | Tysons\, VACandace Borders | Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis | St. Louis\, MOAmanda Elena Brito | Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center | Oklahoma City\, OKLulu Luyao Chang | The James Howell Foundation | New York\, NYMichelle Huynh Chu | Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum | New York\, NYRebeca Cintrón-Loáisiga | The Metropolitan Museum of Art | New York\, NYYocari De los Santos | CALA Alliance | Phoenix\, AZSophia Ellis | The Morgan Library & Museum | New York\, NYLuiza Repsold França | El Museo del Barrio | New York\, NYKimari Jackson | Seattle Art Museum | Seattle\, WAStefanie Jason | Amant Foundation | Brooklyn\, NYJuliet Johnson | Materials & Applications (M&A) | Los Angeles\, CATatyana Neal | American Indian Artists Inc. SUMMARY:Virtual | Landmarks: A Discussion on Public Art\, with Sarah Oppenheimer & Andrée Bober
DESCRIPTION:2pm PT / 3pm MT / 4pm CT / 5pm ET\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a virtual conversation between artist Sarah Oppenheimer and Andrée Bober\, founding director and curator of Landmarks\, the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin. The discussion will offer an inside look at C-010106\, Oppenheimer’s recent commission for the university’s College of Engineering. Oppenheimer and Bober will introduce the work and share insights on developing a major outdoor public art project within a unique and complex architectural setting. \n\n\n\nC-010106 consists of two structures positioned at opposite ends of a new pedestrian footbridge on the Texas Engineering campus. Each structure features four panes of glass⎯ two reflective\, diagonal sheets sandwiched between two vertical sheets. At the intersection of the four panes\, the glass passes through an incision in the bridge’s surface\, enabling pedestrians on top of the bridge to see the reflections of those underneath\, and vice versa. \n\n\n\nOppenheimer pushes the boundaries between sculpture and architecture\, questioning the limits of both mediums. The artist shifts our frame of spatial reference\, displacing our experience of inside and out\, and inverting our sense of what is near and far. In doing so\, Oppenheimer heightens our awareness of the shared environment and creates unexpected opportunities for social exchange. \n\n\n\nC-010106 is Oppenheimer’s first entirely outdoor public work and is among the artist’s largest works to date. Sited on the Peyton Yates Family footbridge connecting the Engineering Education and Research Center (EERC) to the new Gary L. Thomas Energy Engineering Building (GLT)—designed through a collaboration of Jacobs and Ennead—the work features architectural materials that have been engineered with unique specificity. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\nArtTable Circle Members – FreeAll Other ArtTable Members – $10Member Guests/Non-Members – $20\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan’t make the program at this time? Register anyway to receive a recording after! \n\n\n\nPlease note that this program will offer automatic closed captioning services. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\n\n\nArtTable is a 501.c.3 organization. SUMMARY:New York | Annual Leadership Series - Latinx and Latin American Identity and Representation in the Visual Arts
DESCRIPTION:ArtTable is pleased to present the 2022 Annual Leadership Series\, focusing on Latinx & Latin American Identity & Representation in the Visual Arts. \n\n\n\nThe 2022 Armory Show’s fair-wide focus on Latinx and Latin American Art is the culmination of decades-long efforts of critical forerunners in the field\, chief amongst them the incredible visionaries on this panel. Latinx representation in the arts is not simply “having a moment;” Latinx and Latin American artists and arts professionals have and continue to contribute to the development of the culture and history of the United States. Through establishing curators of Latin American/Latinx Art at key cultural institutions and sharing their collections or the curation of exhibitions in these public spaces\, passionate innovators\, such as Estrellita Brodsky and Patricia Phelps de Cisneros\, assisted these visionaries in staying the course to ensure today’s transnational understanding and authentic engagement with the art produced by those who hail from the non-Anglophone nations of the Western hemisphere\, as well as those who have joined the U.S. population from these countries. There is added pressure\, applied to the United States in particular\, to recognize its fellow “America”n countries due to the phenomenon Dr. Mari Carmen Ramirez termed “Latinization\,” the influence of those of Latin American descent as the largest ethnic group in the U.S.\, since historically their contributions have been minimized and excluded in the canon of art history\, both in the Americas and internationally. \n\n\n\nThe speakers on this panel will share their experiences of the past\, their plans for the present\, and how we can all move forward in the future to continue bringing Latinx/Latin American arts and culture to the forefront of the art world. \n\n\n\nThe program will be moderated by CJ Greenhill Caldera\, Post-War and Contemporary Specialist and Head of Sale\, Americas at artnet\, with panelists: \n\n\n\nMarysol Nieves | VP and Senior Specialist\, Latin American Art\, Christie’sGabriela Palmieri | Founder and Principal\, Palmieri Fine Art\, Inc.E. Carrying a pre-sale estimate of $36\,000\,000-52\,000\,000\, the Collection made its debut at auction as the highlight of Christie’s 21st Century Evening Sale in November 2021\, with further sales continuing into Spring 2022. \nIn 2021 Ms. Palmieri also advised on all aspects of bringing the prestigious Brillembourg-Caprilles Collection to market at Sotheby’s. In 2019\, she joined the Board of Directors of El Museo del Barrio\, New York’s leading Latin American cultural institution\, with an emphasis on works from Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican community in the city. \nPrior to joining Sotheby’s\, Ms. Palmieri received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History cum laude at Boston College in 1997\, and she achieved her Master of Arts and advanced to PhD standing at the University of Chicago. \nMs. Palmieri is a Certified Member\, AAA\, Appraisers Association of America\, and since 2012 she has executed numerous appraisals in compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP)\, the only set of appraisal standards promulgated by The Appraisal Foundation and approved by the Internal Revenue Service. \nSince 2021\, E. Carmen Ramos is chief curatorial and conservation officer at The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. There she leads the curatorial and conservation teams as they serve the nation and beyond through collections development\, ground-breaking scholarship and exhibitions\, and art conservation. Ramos most recently served as acting chief curator and curator of Latinx art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, where she built one of the largest collections of Latinx art at a museum of U.S. art.
