DESCRIPTION:10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a virtual Artist Talk with contemporary multidisciplinary artist Nneka Jones.\n\n\nGrowing up in Trinidad and Tobago was one of the main factors that has molded Nneka Jones into the artist she is today. Her astounding love for color and special attention to detail\, as influenced by her culture\, have always been prominent throughout her artistic journey. She enjoys working in mixed media\, embroidery\, textiles\, and paint\, exploring both large-scale mural work and small-scale intimate pieces. Through her practice\, she produces thought-provoking artwork that comments on social and environmental injustice\, strongly advocating for the protection of women and girls of color. These are often topics that as a society\, we feel uncomfortable addressing but are necessary to view head on for a positive change. \nSince graduating from the University of Tampa in May 2020\, Jones’ work has caught the eyes of art directors in top publications like TIME\, where she was commissioned to produce the hand embroidered flag that appears on the August 31st/September 7th 2020 issue. She was also commissioned by the Washington Post to capture the history made by Vice President Kamala Harris and even appeared as a keynote speaker for Adobe MAX; emphasizing the importance of art as a vehicle for activism. \nJones’ unique hand embroidery work has been featured in Colossal magazine\, The Jealous Curator blog\, The American Craft Council\, Embroidery Mag UK\, and Domestika. DESCRIPTION:12:30pm PST\n\n\n\nEnjoy two days in Portland visiting contemporary art galleries and attending an after-hours in-person tour of Frida Kahlo\, Diego Rivera\, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection with Sara Krajewski\, the Portland Art Museum’s Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday afternoon from 12:30-4:30pm we’ll visit four woman-owned galleries: Russo Lee Gallery\, PDX Contemporary\, Elizabeth Leach Gallery\, and Adams and Ollman and hear about their current exhibitions. Following those visits we’ll head to Portland Art Museum at 5:00pm for the private tour\, then wrap up the day at 6:00pm with a no-host happy hour for socializing. Sunday at 12:00pm we will visit Oregon Contemporary to see the final day of their exhibition Hallie Ford Fellows in the Visual Arts 2017-19. \n\n\n\nTransportation / lodging will not be provided for anyone traveling to the event/s. All programs are non-refundable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sara Krajewski\n\n\nSara Krajewski was appointed Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Portland Art Museum in June 2015. Over her tenure\, she has expanded the contemporary art program through exhibitions\, commissions\, collection development\, and publications\, and has fostered collaborations that bring together artists\, curators\, educators\, and the public to ask questions around access\, equity\, and new institutional models. \nFrom 2012-2015\, Krajewski was the Director of INOVA (Institute of Visual Arts) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she curated an array of interdisciplinary exhibitions and performances with artists Xavier Cha\, Mateo Tannatt\, Morgan Thorson and many others. Krajewski was curator at the Henry Art Gallery\, Seattle from 2004 – 2012 where she focused on solo artist projects and group exhibitions exploring photography’s impact on visual culture.  \nKrajewski holds degrees in Art History from the University of Wisconsin (BA) and Williams College (MA) and has held prior positions at the Harvard Art Museum and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. DESCRIPTION:5:30pm ET\nPlease join us for an in-person tour of Part II of This Must Be the Place: Latin American Artists in New York\, 1965–1975\, with Aimé Iglesias Lukin\, Director and Chief curator of the Americas Society. \nThis Must Be the Place: Latin American Artists in New York\, 1965–1975 is a two-part group exhibition exploring the work of a generation of migrants who created and exhibited in New York City between 1965 and 1975. Featuring installation\, photography\, video art\, painting\, and archival material\, the exhibition brings together a generation that actively participated in experimental artistic movements while pushing forward their own visual languages and ideas\, with works exploring topics of migration\, identity\, politics\, exile\, and nostalgia. Additionally\, the exhibition highlights the important contributions and solidarity initiatives of groups and collectives\, testimony of these artists’ effort to create community and to forge a space for themselves. \nPart II of the exhibition will continue the themes explored in Part I with new artworks on display\, by artists including Hélio Oiticica\, Sylvia Palacios Whitman\, Anna Maria Maiolino\, Antonio Dias\, Enrique Castro-Cid\, Beba Damianovich\, Zilia Sánchez and many more. Her research received grants from the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Terra and Andrew W. Mellon Foundations\, and the ICAA Peter C. Marzio Award from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. DESCRIPTION:11:30am PT\nPlease join us for an in-person tour of how we are in time and space: Nancy Buchanan\, Marcia Hafif\, Barbara T. Smith\, followed by a discussion with two of the exhibition artists – Nancy Buchanan and Barbara T. Smith. \nThis major group exhibition is the first to focus on the collaborations and empathic intersections between three remarkable artists in the form of drawing\, photography\, collage\, video\, performance documentation\, and architectural proposals comprising over 50 years of art making. Embracing the differences between these artists as well as their points of convergence\, the exhibition will probe various notions of being\, including the political\, scientific\, and spiritual.  \nAll three artists have deep connections to Southern California\, intersecting in the inaugural MFA program at UC-Irvine from 1969 to 1971. Buchanan\, Hafif\, and Smith all entered graduate school as mothers and were emphatically aware of the gendered expectations and hostilities toward women choosing art making as their primary pursuit\, though each presented a unique version of the struggle for liberation from the orthodoxies of gender and sexuality. All programs are non-refundable. \n\nAbout the artists\nNancy Buchanan (b. 1946\, Boston) is an artist whose work has been shown in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art\, the New Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles\, the Centre Pompidou\, the Getty Research Institute\, and was included in four of the Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time exhibitions. She was the subject of a solo screening of her videotapes at REDCAT in 2013\, and her videos have been included in group exhibitions including Agitprop at the Brooklyn Museum; RE-ACTION\, a traveling exhibition originating in Spain; and Jonny at Insitu\, Berlin. Buchanan is the recipient of four National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist grants\, a COLA grant\, and a Rockefeller Fellowship in New Media. In 2016\, she organized It’s Your Party\, a durational performance at UC Irvine’s xMPL Theater as the second event in The Art of Performance. Beginning with her participation as a founding member of F Space Gallery in Costa Mesa\, Buchanan has been involved in numerous artists’ groups including The Los Angeles Woman’s Building and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE); she has also acted as curator for several exhibitions and projects. From 1988-2012\, she taught in the Film/School at CalArts; she worked with community activist Michael Zinzun on his cable access show Message to the Grassroots for ten years and as a member of Zinzun’s LA 435 Committee; and she traveled to Namibia to produce a documentary about that country’s transition to independence from the Republic of South Africa. Buchanan lives and works in Los Angeles. \nBarbara T. Smith (b. 1931) has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area her whole life. She received a BA from Pomona College in 1953\, and MFA in 1971 from University of California\, Irvine where she was a founding member of F Space with Chris Burden and Nancy Buchanan. Smith has been represented in historic survey exhibitions including Whatever Happened to Sex in Scandinavia? at Office for Contemporary Art\, Oslo\, Norway (2009); WACK! Weisman Art Foundation is dedicated to continuing the legacy and vision of Frederick R. Weisman\, an extraordinary entrepreneur\, philanthropist\, and art collector. He held an uncompromising belief in the cultural value of art and understood the importance of both the individual artist and creative process. \nIn 1982\, Frederick R. Weisman purchased the Los Angeles estate to serve as a showcase for his personal collection of 20th-century art. He and his wife Billie Milam Weisman\, an art conservator and curator\, worked together to create a unique environment located within the Mediterranean-style villa. The villa was designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann in the late 1920s and exhibits the craftsmanship characteristics of that period\, including hand-painted ceilings\, stucco details\, and wood-inlaid floors. \nIn 1991\, the Weismans added a contemporary annex\, or art pavilion\, designed by Franklin D.Israel\, to accommodate larger-scale works. Today the Foundation estate\, annex\, and surrounding gardens is made accessible to the public by appointment only on guided tours. \nMore than four hundred works of art are on display at the Foundation. The collection includes works by European Modernists including Cezanne\, Picasso\, and Kandinsky and Surrealist works by Ernst\, Miro\, and Magritte. The holdings in postwar art include works by Giacometti\, Noguchi\, Calder\, Rauschenberg\, and Johns; Abstract Expressionist paintings by de Kooning\, Francis\, Still\, and Rothko; Color-Field paintings by Frankenthaler\, Louis\, and Noland; and Pop Art by Warhol\, Lichtenstein\, Oldenburg\, and Rosenquist. \nContemporary California works include those by Ruscha and Goode\, and Super Realist sculptures by Hanson and de Andrea. These holdings are part of a larger collection that Mr. Weisman established as the Frederick R. Drawing connections across the interdisciplinary practices of international and intergenerational artists\, Greater New York examines the many ways that affinities form in relation to place and through time. \nThe exhibition foregrounds the resilience of artists and artist communities in the city\, while marking ways these artists have both profoundly shaped New York\, and borne witness to its many transformations. All programs are non-refundable. \n\nAbout Kate Haw\nFrom 2013-2019\, Kate Haw was Director of the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.Leading the world’s largest resource for the study of American art\, she set the direction for collecting\, preservation\, and dissemination of a growing collection of more than 30 million documents and nearly 2\,500 oral histories\, providing leadership in the field on emerging research trends and adoption of digital tools in the study of art history. Under her leadership\, the Archives significantly expanded its holdings on first-wave feminist\, African American\, Latinx\, and LGBTQ artists and built an endowment to ensure worldwide digital access to these materials. \nPrior to joining the Smithsonian\, Kate held curatorial roles at the National Gallery of Art and the American Federation of Arts\, where she helped to organize exhibitions including Johannes Vermeer; Georges de La Tour and His World\, Gerard Ter Borch; Degas and the Dance; American Impressionists Abroad and at Home; and The Sensuous and the Sacred: Chola Bronzes from South India. In 2004 she transitioned to fundraising and institutional leadership\, serving as Director of External Affairs at the American Federation of Arts from 2004-2006 before becoming Co-Director of the renowned Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in New York and Maine from 2006-2011. At the core of our mission\, we aim to advance the leadership of women in the visual arts by expanding opportunities for women from diverse backgrounds and at all stages of their careers. It is with our mission in mind that we have outlined an action plan for ensuring that diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility remain at the center of our organization. \nWe invite you all to read our proposal for furthering the key ideas of diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility in our organization. We hope to gather feedback on the action plan at a series of Talk Backs which aim to gather community feedback and answer any questions you all may have. This first Talk Back will focus on the Leadership portions of the action plan. She is the PMA’s curator of Emma Amos: Color Odyssey\, organized by the Georgia Museum of Art. Laurel is also a PhD candidate at Northwestern University\, where she is completing a dissertation on the social position of the printer in nineteenth-century France. Laurel has held positions and fellowships at the Art Institute of Chicago\, Getty Museum\, Clark Art Institute\, and Courtauld Gallery. She received an MA at the Courtauld as well as a BA from Cornell University. \nShawnya L. Harris\, Ph.D. is the organizing curator for Emma Amos: Color Odyssey\, centering on the work of the late feminist artist Emma Amos (1937-2020). Harris is the Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at the Georgia Museum of Art\, University of Georgia. Recently\, Harris has been a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership. She earned her doctorate in art history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also an alumna of Yale University. \nJodi Throckmorton is the curator of contemporary art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia. Before joining PAFA in fall 2014\, she was curator of modern and contemporary art at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University in Kansas. Prior to that\, she was associate curator at the San Jose Museum of Art in California. She organized the exhibition and publications for Rina Banerjee: Make Me a Summary of the World (2018) with Lauren Dickens and Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India (2015). Her other recent projects include Nick Cave: Rescue (2018)\, Paul Chan: Pillowsophia (2017)\,  Melt/Carve/Forge: Embodied Sculptures by Cassils (2016)\, Alyson Shotz: Plane Weave (2016)\, Bruce Conner: Somebody Else’s Prints (2014)\, Questions from the Sky: New Work by Hung Liu (2013)\, Dive Deep: Eric Fischl and the Process of Painting (2013)\, Ranu Mukherjee: Telling Fortunes (2012)\, and This Kind of Bird Flies Backward: Paintings by Joan Brown (2011). If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org.\n\n\n\nAbout Randy Rosen\nAn independent curator\, adviser\, author\, and an adjunct professor at New York University’s School of Professional Studies for over a decade\, Randy joined ArtTable shortly after the organization’s founding. Since then\, she’s actively contributed to its history and growth\, organizing innovative programs and spearheading innumerable initiatives that have helped raise ArtTable’s voice and visibility in the art world.\n\nWorking with ArtTable founder Lila Harnett and founding member Carol Morgan\, Randy helped launch and edit ArtWire\, the organization’s first newsletter\, and a “first” in connecting professional women leaders across the country to readily share art projects\, explore job opportunities and raise awareness for critical developments in their fields. As an officer of the Board and a member of the Board’s Executive Committee\, Randy advocated for strategic program planning and partnerships that would establish ArtTable as a “change-maker” organization elevating the status of professional women in the visual arts\, but also as an outward-looking platform engaging with thought-leaders and ground-breaking artists bringing new ideas and issues to the art world discourse.\n\nTwice Co-chair of the New York Chapter Communications Committee\, Randy was tasked to become editor\, teaming up with managing editor\, Barbra Cavaliere\, and designer\, Renee Skuba\, to produce Changing the Equation: Women’s Leadership in the Visual Arts\, 1980-2005\, for ArtTable’s 25th anniversary\, a book that documented the organization’s pivotal role in advancing opportunities for professional women in the visual arts. Randy also served as Chair of the New York Chapter Programs Committee\, and later as a long-time committee member\, she continued to organize thought-provoking programs\, among them ArtTable’s very first year-long series: The Digitization of The Art World\, a series of panels\, talks\, seminars\, and workshops partnering with The New Museum\, Sony Wonder Lab\, MoMA\, Artsy\, and The School of Visual Arts in examining the transformative impact of digitization and new media on the art world.\n\nThat penchant for innovative and intellectually stimulating programming became a hallmark of Randy Rosen Arts Associates (RRAA)\, the business she opened in the 1980s. In her more than 30 years as a specialist in developing art programming\, corporate art collections\, traveling museum exhibitions\, and their associated educational agendas\, she’s built a reputation for eschewing formulaic\, boilerplate formats for approaches that extend the impact of the visual arts in the workplace and increase the representation of women and artists of color and diverse backgrounds.\n\nHer experience includes working with large and smaller companies\, among them Bristol Myers\, Verizon\, Sony\, Telemundo\, Maidenform\, Rudin Management\, Lakeview Capital\, and for over 15 years as curator of the AlixPartners Global Art Program. She served as a member of Polaroid’s Cultural Advisory Task Force and as founding curator and manager of “On The Leading Edge: Cross-Currents in Contemporary Art\,” the General Electric company’s original Art Program. With associate curator\, Catherine Brawer\, Randy curated\, and RRAA organized\, the landmark traveling museum exhibition\, Making Their Mark: Women Artists Move into the Mainstream\, 1970-1985. The show’s catalog included the first comprehensive\, inter-generational research on institutional and art world barriers to the visibility and advancement of women artists.\n\nRandy has collaborated on projects with institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, The Whitney Museum\, The Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art\, The Denver Art Museum\, Houston’s Blaffer Gallery\, The McNay Institute\, San Antonio\, and Boston’s Museum of The National Center of Afro-American Artists\, and others. An author of several books on art\, including Prints\, a history of printmaking\, and numerous articles\, her forthcoming book\, The Selective Eye: Seeing Beyond Beauty\, will be released this spring. SUMMARY:Virtual | Listening to Native American Voices: Reimagining & Honoring a Diverse Heritage
DESCRIPTION:3pm PT/ 4pm MT / 5pm CT / 6pm ET\nIn this 4th and final program in ArtTable’s Monuments and Memorials series\, we shift our attention to those memorials that bear witness to Native American heritage\, through their own voices. By exploring Native American memorials and sites\, we will learn how they honor and preserve cultural memory in the United States. This series continues to ask: whose stories are we telling and who is telling them?\n\nJoin us for a discussion with artists Malynn Foster (Coast Salish of Squaxin Island) and Erin Genia (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate)\, as well as attorney Shannon O’Loughlin (Citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma). Foster and Genia will each speak about their artistic practice\, as well as reimagine\, re-contextualize\, or otherwise address the general conversation around public monuments and memorials. O’Loughlin will bring our focus to some sites of memory that are sacred to Native Americans\, sharing the need to protect and preserve them. All programs are non-refundable.\n\n\n\nAbout the speakers\nErin Genia (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate) is a multidisciplinary artist\, educator\, and community organizer specializing in Native American and Indigenous arts and culture. Her work in these areas focuses on amplifying the under-recognized presence of native peoples in the arts\, sciences\, and the public arena. Erin earned an M.S. in Art\, Culture\, and Technology from MIT and an M.P.A. in Tribal Governance from Evergreen State College. She also studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts. In recent years\, her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at Boston’s Urbano Project\, the Venice Biennale\, Ars Electronica\, The Museum of Northwest Art\, and the International Space Station. Public commissions have come from the Tufts University Art Galleries\, the Minnesota Historical Society\, the City of St. Paul\, and the City of Seattle. Also in the public realm\, Erin was named artist-in-residence with the City of Boston (2020-2021) and co-founded\, “Centering Justice: Indigenous Artists’ Perspectives on Public Art\,” with the New England Foundation for the Arts’ Public Art Team.\n\nShannon O’Loughlin is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma\, and the Chief Executive and Attorney for the oldest non-profit serving Indian Country – the Association on American Indian Affairs. Throughout its 99-year history\, the Association has provided national advocacy on watershed issues that support sovereignty and culture\, while working at a grassroots level with Tribes. The Association’s vision is to create a world where diverse Native American cultures and values are lived\, protected and respected.\n\n\n\nShannon has been practicing law for more than 20 years and is a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University. In 2013\, she was appointed by Secretary of the Department of the Interior to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Review Committee. In 2015 she was appointed by President Barack Obama as the first Native American to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee within the State Department. Shannon received a B.A. in American Indian Studies from California State University\, Long Beach. She then received joint M.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Arizona in Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy.\n\nMalynn Wilbur-Foster is a Squaxin Island tribal member\, raised among her people near the Skokomish and Squaxin Island reservations where she has lived most of her life. She works in a variety of media \, including weaving\, painting\, jewelry\, and carving both stone and wood. Malynn is always looking for new ways to tell the stories of her people fusing tradition and technology.\n\nSince 1998\, her work has been shown in galleries and featured in\n\n\n\nbooks. It has also entered collections of the Seattle Art Museum\, Burke Museum\, and Washington State History Museum. Additionally she has collaborated on a number of commissioned works in the Seattle area\, with family members and friends. 2020 brought a significant new commission: Malynn is now collaborating with Tamela LaClair and Kimberly Deriana\, as a team\, known as the MTK Matriarchs.\n\nThey have been selected as the artists for the Salish Steps\, part of the Seattle project re-imagining the city’s waterfront. Representing both local tribes and Urban Natives\, they are working with the design team\, developing a permanent artwork to elevate the importance of indigenous culture and history to this very public site. The book was written to reflect Donna’s work to assemble a collection of contemporary art for a new Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran\, Iran under the auspices of the Imperial Empress Pahlavi\, wife of the Shah of Iran. All programs are non-refundable. \n\nAbout the speakers\nDonna Stein worked for six years at the Museum of Modern Art in New York\, NY after completing her BA at University of California\, Los Angeles. She continued her studies at The Institute of Fine Arts at NYU\, NYC. Stein has written extensively in articles and books on many art subjects including Cubism\, Modern Illustrated Books\, and Photography. She is the first American scholar to study 19th century photography in Iran. Stein has also received awards for her meticulous scholarship. She recently retired as Deputy Director at the Wende Museum of the Cold War in Los Angeles. \nDorothy Goldeen is an art advisor and former gallery owner. Between 2014-2020\, Dorothy was honored to serve as the President of Stone Art LLC and Allan Stone Projects in New York\, the exclusive representative of the Allan Stone Collection\, one of the largest private art collections ever amassed by an individual. Dorothy presided over the sale of an unprecedented number of artworks\, through exhibitions at Allan Stone Projects\, to private collectors\, institutions\, and at auction. In 2021\, Dorothy relaunched Dorothy Goldeen Art Advisory\, which she had initiated in Los Angeles in 1996. Prior to that\, she owned and operated Dorothy Goldeen Gallery in Santa Monica. The gallery represented artists such as Nam June Paik and Magdalena Abakanowicz\, gave early shows to international and trailblazing artists\, such as Beatriz Milhazes\, Diana Thater\, Charles Gaines\, and David Wojnarowicz. Dorothy currently lives and works in New York. She has served on ArtTable’s Board of Directors and was the founding Chair of the Chapter Leadership Forum\, as well as serving twice as the Chair of the Southern California Chapter in Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:9am PT / 10am MT / 11am CT / 12pm ET\nPlease join Doro Globus\, Managing Director of David Zwirner Books\, and Genevieve Martin\, Director of External Affairs and Advancement at the Children’s Museum of the Arts\, for a discussion on the motivation behind Globus’ newly published children’s book\, Making a Great Exhibition. Globus will also talk about the publishing program at David Zwirner. We will hear more about how the program works and why it is a crucial part of the gallery’s offerings. \nIn Making a Great Exhibition\, Globus identified a need to demystify the museum space and offer insight into how it works. Thinking beyond the finished product–the exhibition or the artwork–Globus steps back to show how many people and skills are involved along the way. She features curators\, art handlers\, educators\, photographers\, shippers\, museum visitors\, and more as she describes the process. Both author and illustrator\, Rose Blake\, were raised in the art world\, spending their time in studios\, doing homework in museum offices\, and going to special openings. They have teamed up to share their experiences and love for this world of creative people. \nParents are encouraged to bring their children to this program! Formerly the Publisher of Ridinghouse\, an independent arts publisher owned by Karsten Schubert\, she has edited a wide variety of books\, from Michael Bracewell: The Space Between (2012) to About Bridget Riley: Selected Writings 1999–2016 (2017). She has also written on Dawn Ades\, Fred Wilson\, and others. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGenevieve Martin is a born-and-bred New Yorker\, visual artist\, and experienced arts administrator. She joined Children’s Museum of the Arts in Spring 2021 where she oversees strategic partnerships in her role as Director of External Affairs and Advancement. \nPreviously\, Genevieve served as the Interim Managing Director of The Center for Italian Modern Art and as the Director of External Affairs at The Art Students League of New York. She has supported projects at The Morgan Library & Museum\, Christie’s\, The Moving Museum\, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Genevieve has a proven track record in strategic planning\, PR\, fundraising\, and creative partnerships within an arts education framework. Her focus is on small to mid-sized art nonprofits\, which she believes are responsible for engaging in the most experimental work and serve as social facilitators for larger institutions. She attended The Horace Mann School\, The Cooper Union\, and did her MA work in Arts Administration at Baruch College. Genevieve is presently a Diversity in the Arts Leadership Mentor and has previously served as an ArtTable Fellowship mentor. \nAbout David Zwirner Books\nDavid Zwirner Books publishes the highest quality art publications.
