If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\nAbout Charlotte Caspers\nCharlotte Caspers (Ghent\, 1979) is an artist who makes use of historical painting techniques and materials in a contemporary way. Central to her work is the subtle communication of materials\, of human beings as makers\, with nature as the basis of everything. She connects these themes with her specific form language and with her clearly recognisable aesthetics. Caspers studied Art History at Radboud University in Nijmegen and took the postgraduate course in painting restoration at Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg in Maastricht (SRAL). She specialized in historical painting materials and techniques and has made historical reconstructions for numerous museums and institutions\, including the Van Gogh Museum\, the Rijksmuseum\, Tate Britain\, Princeton and Duke University\, and Dutch television. For ten years\, Caspers has been a guest lecturer in historical painting techniques at the Department of Conservation and Restoration at the University of Amsterdam. \n  \nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. The Pollock-Krasner Foundation has been a leader in providing grants enabling emerging and established artists to focus on their work. Funding helps artists to create new work\, acquire art supplies\, rent studio space\, and prepare exhibitions. The Foundation also provides grants to organizations that directly engage with artists\, such as artist residency programs. DESCRIPTION:5:00pm PST\nCurrent and prospective members are welcome to join ArtTable’s Northwest Chapter leaders for this summer meetup! \nThis meet-up is for members and non-members\, as our summer party\, and is an opportunity to network and catch up with friends. As part of the current Covid-19 guidelines\, the OSP asks visitors to keep moving while in the park – and so we will congregate at 5pm from the Trust for Public Lands Terrace\, next to the Paccar Pavilion\, and from there we will walk through the park while we catch up. Currently home to more than 20 permanently installed sculptures by artists such as Louise Bourgeois\, Louise Nevelson\, Beverly Pepper\, Ginny Ruffner\, Teresita Fernández\, Alexander Calder\, Tony Smith\, and more. DESCRIPTION:8:00am PST\nAll members of ArtTable’s Northern California Chapter are welcome to join us in the early morning of Thursday\, July 8th\, to share a cup of coffee before your workday gets started. Bring your own coffee\, tea\, and/or pastry and meet and catch up with other members during this first in-person outdoor coffee break together. \nWe will meet at the benches across the street from the DeYoung Museum\, directly East of Monumental Reckoning\, a public installation by artist and See Black Womxn co-founder Dana King. This work\, unveiled on Juneteenth 2021\, represents the first Africans stolen from their homeland and sold into chattel slavery in 1619. King’s installation consists of 350 ancestral sculptures that encircle the vacant plinth of the slaveholder Francis Scott Key\, that was toppled by protesters on Juneteenth of 2020. \n \nThis is a Northern California members-only event. She is an art historian and curator whose past curatorial projects include Ink Art: Past and Present in Contemporary China\, Metropolitan Museum of Art (2013); Field Meeting of Asian Contemporary Art Week (2014\, New York)\, Lu Yang’s solo debut in New York THE BANK SHOW: Vive le Capital and THE BANK SHOW: Hito Steyerl (2015)\, Art in China since the 1990s (2018\, Ulm\, Germany)\, to highlight a few projects. Her writing has appeared in E-flux journal\, Artforum\, Kaleidoscope\, Hyperallergic and Leap. \nXin is currently pursuing her PhD in modern and contemporary art at the Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University\, and holds an MA in Art History from Columbia University and a BA in Art History\, Mathematics\, and Psychology from Hamilton College. DESCRIPTION:12:00pm PST\nCurrent and prospective members are welcome to join ArtTable’s SoCal Chapter leaders for an in-person\, artist-led walking tour of Sonia Romero’s Hecho A Mano. On view at the Mariachi Plaza Metro Station in Boyle Heights\, the mural was just recently completed this past year. \nThe mural Hecho A Mano was commissioned by Metro Art\, and it highlights the historic and contemporary stories of Latinx\, Jewish\, and Japanese makers and workers from Boyle Heights\, featuring an eclectic mix of objects that intertwine the artist’s personal connection to Boyle Heights with those of individuals from the neighborhood. In reference to the work\, Romero states that\, “There is a certain homemade and handmade quality that has been created by generations of people raising families and creating livelihoods in the neighborhood. I wanted to capture and honor this quality through the metaphor of the hand\, by painting this mural by hand.” \nLater this summer\, join us for an upcoming virtual roundtable discussion focused on the public art scene in Los Angeles. Born in 1980\, she grew up in an artistic household in Echo Park before formally studying at the Rhode Island School of Design. After returning to California\, she began working as a public artist. Romero was the artist in residence at Avenue 50 Studio in Northeast Los Angeles from 2007-2014. \nCalling upon her own experiences and perspectives as a multiracial person\, Romero creates work that reflects the cultural diversity found in Los Angeles communities. She explores themes relating to the universal connectedness within humanity as well as its relationship to the environment. Her signature style is a dynamic combination of printmaking\, paper-cutting\, painting\, and sculpture. Her oeuvre includes fine art pieces that have been showcased in many galleries and acquired for the collections of prominent institutions\, such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Smithsonian. Romero’s distinctive paper-cut shapes and patterns can be found in steel\, tile\, or paint in one of her many large-scale permanent installations in notable locations such as Little Tokyo\, the Mariachi Plaza and MacArthur Park Metro Stations and the Artesia County Public Library. Curated by Jodi Throckmorton and Brittany Webb\, this exhibition features more than sixty works of art from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ permanent collection. In this role\, Webb oversees the Museum’s collections\, exhibitions\, and programs of 20th century art and provides instruction for the School of Fine Arts at PAFA. Webb’s first exhibition at PAFA\, Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale (November 2020-September 5\, 2021) is co-curated with Jodi Throckmorton\, Curator of Contemporary Art at PAFA. Webb is also organizing a major retrospective exhibition and catalogue of the work of the African American sculptor John Rhoden (1916-2001) and stewards a collection of nearly 300 sculptures by Rhoden\, leading PAFA’s ongoing effort to place his artworks into the permanent collections of museums around the world. \nPrior to joining PAFA\, Webb was a member of the curatorial staff of the African American Museum in Philadelphia. Levin will speak about the work of pioneering artist Luise Kaish\, in the context of the history of women artists in America. \nLuise Clayborn Kaish (1925–2013) was a pioneer. A key figure in the New York art scene of the late 20th century\, her multidisciplinary practice and process-oriented work spanned a range of mediums\, materials\, techniques\, and themes. The strength and breadth of her work—monumental sculptures in bronze\, oil paintings\, watercolours\, lithographs\, collage—and the prestigious awards and fellowships she received set her apart as an early female leader in the visual arts. Sikander is widely celebrated for expanding and subverting pre-modern and classical Central and South-Asian miniature painting traditions and launching the form known today as neo-miniature. By bringing traditional and historical practice into dialogue with contemporary international art practices\, Sikander’s multivalent and investigative work examines colonial archives to readdress orientalist narratives in western art history. Interrogating ideas of language\, trade\, empire\, and migration through imperial and feminist perspectives Sikander’s paintings\, video animations\, mosaics and sculpture explore gender roles and sexuality\, cultural identity\, racial narratives\, and colonial and postcolonial histories. \nSikander earned a B.F.A. in 1991 from the National College of Arts in Lahore\, Pakistan. Her seminal thesis work\, The Scroll (1989–1990) which initiated the start of the neo-miniature movement\, garnered awards\, exhibitions and press\, as well as led to increased enrollment in the NCA’s miniature painting department. Subsequently\, Sikander was appointed as a lecturer in miniature painting at the school. The artist then moved to the United States to pursue an M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 1995; from 1995 to 1997\, she participated in the Glassell School of Art’s CORE Program at The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship (2006) and the State Department Medal of Arts (2012)\, Sikander’s innovative work has been exhibited and collected internationally. \nShahzia Sikander will be the subject of a traveling exhibition titled Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities. The exhibition will open at The Morgan Library in New York in June 2021\, followed by the RISD Museum in Providence\, Rhode Island in November 2021\, and then the MFA Houston in Texas in Spring 2022. On the occasion of these exhibitions\, there will be a major new monograph printed. Extraordinary Realities is an exhaustive examination of Sikander’s work from 1987 to 2003\, charting her early development as an artist in Lahore and the United States\, and foregrounding her critical role in bringing miniature painting into dialogue with contemporary art. In 2006 she curated and produced Studio in The Park\, a three month exhibition of eleven art installations in Riverside Park. The projects were sited in unexpected places: under tunnels\, on baseball backstops\, in the Hudson River\, and along the meandering paths. In 2009 she became consultant for the Downtown Alliance\, where she selected and oversaw several art projects on construction barriers in lower Manhattan. Among some of her other projects\, she curated 19 site -specific works at Lehman College and several installations for a gallery during Bushwick Open Studios. She is the curator and consultant for The Public Arts Commission of Lewes\, Delaware and on the arts advisory committee for The Stirner Arts Trail in Easton Pennsylvania. \nSince 1991\, Karin Bravin and her husband\, John Post Lee\, have owned and operated BravinLee programs\, a contemporary art gallery in New York. They focus their attention on their exhibition program\, artist rug program\, site-specific/public art program and an artist book program. They curate outside of the gallery\, lecture\, teach\, participate in art fairs\, and foster an active art advisory. Bravin received her BA in art history from Dartmouth College. \nAbout Blanka Amezkua\nBlanka Amezkua is formally trained as a painter; she attended the Accademia di belle Arti in Florence\, Italy and received her B.A. from California State University Fresno. Her work and projects have been shown in the United States\, Mexico\, Belgium and Greece. In cultural establishments such as: MoMA-P.S.1\, Exit Art\, The Bronx Museum of the Arts\, El Museo del Barrio\, Queens Museum of Art\, Towson University\, Dorsky Gallery\, The Taller Boricua\, The Block Gallery among others. She writes short fictions for created landscapes that take the form of narrative paintings\, print and installation. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions throughout the United States and internationally\, including the 12th Cairo Biennale\, Robert Miller Gallery\, BravinLee Programs\, The New Jersey State Museum and Aljira Center for Contemporary Art. Her work is in the public collections of the Newark Museum\, the Zimmerli Museum\, Johnson & Johnson Corporation\, the US Department of State\, amongst others. Dahlia has received awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, the Edward Albee Foundation\, Visual Studies Workshop\, the MacDowell Colony\, Women’s Studio Workshop\, Headlands Center for the Arts\, and the NJ State Council on the Arts. She received her MFA from Columbia University\, and lives and works in New Jersey. Ms. Elsayed is Professor of Humanities at CUNY LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City\, NY. You can view more of her work on her website. \nAbout Jean Shin\nBorn in Seoul\, South Korea\, and raised in the United States\, is nationally recognized for her monumental installations that transform everyday objects into elegant expressions of identity and community engagement. For each project\, she amasses vast collections of a particular object—prescription pill bottles\, sports trophies\, sweaters—which are often sourced through donations from individuals in a participating community. These intimate objects then become the materials for her conceptually rich sculptures\, videos\, and site-specific installations. Distinguished by her meticulous\, labor-intensive process\, and her engagement of community\, Shin’s arresting installations reflect individuals’ personal lives as well as collective issues that we face as a society. \nShin attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1999 and received a BFA and MS from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She is a tenured Adjunct Professor of Fine Art at Pratt Institute and a recipient of Pratt’s 2017 Alumni Achievement Award. She lives and works in Brooklyn and Hurley\, NY. She is also a committed educator\, teaching drawing and painting at the Conservatoire. \nAbout Janet Goldner\nJanet is an independent researcher\, scholar\, consultant and artist. She has a lifelong relationship with Africa. She received a Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship to Mali in 1995. Since then\, she has spent several months every year in Mali engaged cultural research and projects concerning cultural preservation\, contemporary art\, and artists in Mali. Her research takes the form of immersive fieldwork\, and she often collaborates with Malian artists. She has received three Fulbright Specialist grants and grants from the Ford Foundation and the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid. She has lectured widely. She is the Programs Chair for ArtTable’s DC Chapter Executive Committee. \nAbout Teddy Rodger\nTeddy Rodger specializes in program development within the cultural sector. She delivers high-quality and thoughtful initiatives and events that connect communities around the world through the arts. She is well-versed in launching large-scale and internationally-focused arts events\, fellowships\, and collaborative projects that elevate organizational mission and presence on a global scale. In addition to co-founding and curating Plain Sight\, Teddy is a Program Manager for the Goethe Institute. There she manages Shaping the Past\, a partnership between the Goethe-Institut\, Monument Lab\, and the German Federal Agency for Civic Education. The partnership connects memory workers in North America and Germany to deliver public programs and a multi-city\, international exhibition. \nShe was the Public Engagement and Events Manager at IA&A at Hillyer before its pandemic related closure in May 2020. Before that\, Teddy worked as the Programs Manager at Georgetown’s The Lab for Global Performance and Politics\, as well as the Producer of their international Cross-Currents festival. DESCRIPTION:June 7-12\, 2021 \nThe Convening is a week-long virtual leadership conference founded by Sheri Pasquerella of SLP The Class + SLP Women’s Group\, and Lauren Jackson Harris & Daricia Mia DeMarr of Black Women in Visual Art. Presented in collaboration with ArtTable and inaugurating in June 2021\, the gathering will provide tools\, education\, and mentorship for women of all ages working in the visual arts ecosystem. We will unite more than 300 female visionaries from across the country and convene around the question: How can we lead real change in 2021? \nFor 5 Days\, The Convening will present daily programming on a rotating schedule designed to encourage equity and growth in the arts\, including Morning Meditations\, Afternoon Workshops\, and Evening Panel Discussions. All these programs are leading up to The Great Convening on Friday and Saturday. During these gatherings\, 10 inspiring women will lead small groups & mentor-based sessions of 10-15 people to brainstorm and consider the question: How can we lead real change? Each circle is tasked with coming up with 1-2 actions that they can commit to. We will hear from Professor Harriet F. Senie\, Professor of Art History at C.U.N.Y. and its Graduate Center\, who will offer her perspective on The Evolution of Monuments: Paradigms and Underlying Issues based on her 30 years of experience teaching\, writing and participating on national selection commissions in the field of public art. She is joined by artist Alison Saar\, who will reflect on her much admired permanent 2007 Harriet Tubman Monument in Harlem\, a case study\, in New York City where there are few monuments to women or non-white males. We will also hear from artist Marisa Williamson\, who is known for reimagining under-represented historical subjects by bringing these figures to life through performance art and augmented reality (AR). She will speak about her practice using new narratives and new media for contemporary audiences. Senie is professor of art history at City College and the CUNY Graduate Center. She is the author of Memorials to Shattered Myths: Vietnam to 9/11; The “Tilted Arc” Controversy: Dangerous Precedent?; and Contemporary Public Sculpture: Tradition\, Transformation\, and Controversy.  She is co-editor and contributor to Teachable Monuments: Using Public Art to Spark Dialogue and Confront Controversy; Museums and Public Art?; A Companion to Public Art; and Critical Issues in Public Art. In 2008\, she cofounded Public Art Dialogue\, an international organization and College Art Association affiliate\, and coedited its peer review journal Public Art Dialogue from 2011-17. She has served on the New York City Mayoral Advisory Commission on City Art\, Monuments\, and Markers; the She Built New York advisory committee\, and selection committees for the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument in Central Park; the Mexico City 1968 Memorial; and the Flight 587 Memorial. Her current book project is Monumental Controversies: Mount Rushmore\, Four Presidents\, and the Quest for National Identity. \nAbout Alison Saar\nAlison Saar was born in Los Angeles\, California. She has been commissioned to create a number of Public Monuments including Swing Low a monument to Harriet Tubman\, Terra Incognita a memorial to York of the Lewis and Clark expedition and Embodied a monument to Justice. She received the United States Artist Fellowship in 2012 and has also been awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and two National Endowment Fellowships. Alison has exhibited at many galleries and museums\, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her art is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Baltimore Art Museum\, the Modern Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nAbout Marisa Williamson\nMarisa Williamson is a project-based artist who has produced site-specific works at Monticello\, & by commission from Storm King Art Center\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Monument Lab\, & the National Park Service. She has had solo exhibitions at the University of Virginia\, the University of Washington\, & SPACES in Cleveland. Her work has been exhibited nationally & internationally. During her tenure\, Ms. Cubiñá led a $12 million institutional transformation\, complete with a building renovation by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Arata Isozaki and David Gauld. Throughout this time\, the museum’s annual budget and full-time staff quadrupled and the board grew from three members to thirty. Prior to The Bass\, Ms. Cubiñá was the Director of The Moore Space\, Miami\, from 2002-2008. She also held the position of Adjunct Curator at INOVA\, the Institute of Visual Arts at University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. \nMs. Cubiñá has curated numerous exhibitions\, lectured extensively\, and has participated in grant panels and award selection committees\, including serving as a juror for both the Guggenheim Museum’s Hugo Boss Award 2006 and the 2008 Biennale de Lyon. In 2007\, she was a finalist for the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement and a fellow in the Center for Curatorial Leadership (CCL) fellowship program. Ms. Cubiñá served on the Knight Foundation National Arts Advisory Board and\, in 2012\, she was awarded the distinction of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. In 2018\, she embarked upon ArtAML\, which unites technology and art market know-how to help dealers keep dealing and buyers keep buying in the face of anti-money laundering legislation that hit the art market in 2020. \nEileen Kinsella (moderator) is a journalist who has been covering the international art market\, and the intersection of art and finance\, for more than 20 years. After starting as a news assistant on the national news desk of the Wall Street Journal in New York\, she moved to the Money & Investing section of the paper where she wrote stories on commercial real estate\, mutual funds\, equity markets and investment trends. Kinsella joined the paper’s newly debuted “Weekend Section” in 1998 with expanded coverage of the art market\, where she first started reporting on art. \nKinsella spent more than a decade at ARTnews magazine as a contributing writer and editor of a newsletter that covered a wide range of issues related to the international art market\, including auction sales\, gallery shows\, and legal developments that impact issues of authenticity\, ownership and international repatriation. She has covered numerous high-profile art-fraud related cases and trials and appeared as a guest on numerous CNBC art market news segments and its “American Greed” series\, as well as BBC News\, BBC Radio\, NPR\, Reuters\, and numerous podcasts Artnet News’s own The Art Angle. \nShe has appeared on and moderated numerous art market panels around the world and made presentations on art crime including at New York University’s Visual Arts Administration Program\, and at the Foundation for Appraisal Education (FAE’s) conference in Philadelphia in 2016. Each discussion will explore different aspects of new media initiatives in the art world. These virtual conversations are led by experts in the field and appeal to all who are interested in digital media. \nAs COVID-19 has created a higher demand for art that can be experienced in the public space\, immersive technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality have become synonymous with what’s marketable and accessible in our current pandemic world. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\nAbout Nancy Baker Cahill\n \nNancy Baker Cahill is a new media artist who examines power\, selfhood\, and embodied consciousness through drawing and shared immersive space. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of 4th Wall\, a free Augmented Reality (AR) art platform exploring resistance and inclusive creative expression. Her recent AR public art project\, Liberty Bell\, commissioned by Art Production Fund\, earned features in the New York Times\, frieze Magazine\, Artnet\, Smithsonian Magazine and the Washington Post\, among many other publications. The project\, on view through 2021\, spans six historic and culturally significant sites along the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. and appeared in Artnews’ list\, The Defining Public Artworks of 2020. Baker Cahill was also included in ARTnews’ list of 2021 Deciders. \nHer 2018 TED talk\, Augmented Reality (AR) as an Artist’s Tool for Equity and Access\, launched her international public speaking practice. She has since delivered keynotes at the 2019 Games For Change\, 2020 A.W.E. (Augmented World Expo) and has spoken at the Hirshhorn Museum and numerous academic institutions and conferences. Baker Cahill is an artist scholar in the Berggruen Institute’s inaugural Transformations of the Human Fellowship\, and will begin a residency focused on AR monuments at Oxy Arts this summer. She is the Art and Creative Technologies Advisor for the XRSI Safety Initiative\, and is a member of the Guild of Future Architects. In May 2021\, she will receive the Williams College Bicentennial Medal of Honor. \nAbout Laura Hertzfeld\nLaura Hertzfeld is an Emmy-winning producer\, writer\, and editor with over a decade of experience helping news organizations develop online content\, engagement and distribution strategies. She leads the XR Partner Program at Yahoo Ryot Labs\, building AR and VR projects for Verizon Media’s news partners. Laura was a 2018-2019 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University where she researched the intersection of art\, immersive storytelling\, and journalism. She previously led Journalism 360\, an immersive storytelling initiative from Google News Lab\, Knight Foundation\, and ONA. She has held leadership roles at Entertainment Weekly\, Ora TV\, and PBS.org and was an editor on the original Yahoo News team. \n  \nThis program is generously supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person tour of ‘Maya Lin: Ghost Forest’ on view at Madison Square Park in New York City. The tour will be led by Brooke Kamin Rapaport\, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator at Madison Square Park Conservancy and ArtTable member. \nThis program is open to ArtTable members only. The program fee is $15. Light refreshments will be provided\, and the meeting spot will be circulated prior to the program. \nNot a member? There will be no exceptions.  \n  \n\n  \n\nAbout the exhibition\nMaya Lin’s Ghost Forest\, a towering stand of fifty haunting Atlantic white cedar trees\, is a newly-commissioned public art work. Lin brings her vision as an artist and her agency as an environmental activist to this project\, a memory of germination\, vegetation\, and abundance and a harsh symbol of the devastation of climate change. The height of each tree\, around forty feet\, overwhelms human scale and stands as a metaphor of the outsized impact of a looming environmental calamity. Click here to read more. \n\nAbout Brooke Kamin Rapaport\n \nBrooke Kamin Rapaport is Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator at Madison Square Park Conservancy in New York.
