SUMMARY:New York\, NY | MeetAT at Fountain House Gallery & Studio
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to our next NY MeetAT networking event on March 13\, graciously hosted by Rachel Weisman\, Gallery Director of Fountain House Gallery & Studio. Join us for an evening of light refreshments and engaging conversations with fellow ArtTable members and new connections. \n\n\n\nFountain House Gallery and Studio supports the careers and creative visions of contemporary artists living with mental illness. Founded by Fountain House in 2000 as a not-for-profit exhibition space for its member artists living and working with mental illness\, the Gallery sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists\, curators\, and cultural institutions. Embracing artists who are emerging or established\, trained or self-taught\, Fountain House Gallery cultivates artistic growth\, makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community\, and challenges the stigma surrounding mental illness. \n\n\n\nFor this event\, the gallery will present Meticulous Markings which features 9 artists who utilize a unique method of mark-making in their work. All works intrigue and invite the viewer to look more closely at the images\, to see something more. This fastidious attention to detail by the artist will hopefully transfer to the viewer and allow them time to focus. Everyone’s life is often busy\, and people rush about\, but we hope this exhibition will allow audiences to pause\, reflect\, and find hidden things in the art\, to bring about a greater sense of well-being. \n\n\n\nAre you considering joining ArtTable and want to know more about who we are and what we do? This is a great opportunity for potential members to get to know us! \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nFREE to ArtTable Members and their guests*\n\n\n\n\n*Each member is allowed to bring one guest with them at this time \n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Author Talk: "The Blonde with the Balls: An Insider's View of The Art World" with Patricia Hamilton
DESCRIPTION:ArtTable is thrilled to present a book talk with trailblazing gallerist Patricia Hamilton\, a longtime member of the ArtTable community\, at Bortolami in Tribeca. Her memoir\, The Blonde with the Balls: An Insider’s View of the Art World\, recounts stories that only a figure as inimitable as Hamilton could have collected in a voice that is singularly her own. We’ll follow her riveting recollections of life and work as one of the few women and self-made professionals who emerged onto the scene fifty years ago – and transformed it irrevocably. From the Whitney Museum and Art in America to her eponymous Hamilton Gallery – where she championed Louise Bourgeois\, Grace Hartigan\, Deborah Remington\, Joan Snyder\, and many other artists – Hamilton has cut a unique path and shares a perspective no one else has on the art world. Jessica L. Porter\, Lila Harnett Executive Director of ArtTable\, will moderate the discussion. \n\n\n\nPlease note that registration for this event does not include a copy of the book. Books will be available at the gallery for purchase and signing. \n\n\n\nSeating will be available during this event. Please note that Bortolami’s main entrance is a two-step entrance from the street; the elevator-accessible entrance is directly to the left of the steps. The third-floor event space is primarily accessed by stairs\, but there is an onsite elevator that can be used as needed. \n\n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $25\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $30\n\n\n\nNon-Members – $35\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author \n\n\n\n\nPatricia Hamilton\, a founding member of ArtTable\, has been involved in the art world for fifty years: first as assistant to Robert Doty at the Whitney Museum\, then as Senior Editor of Art in America. Finally\, she found her calling as a dealer and was Curator of Exhibitions at the Andrew Crispo Gallery. At age 26\, she opened her own gallery on 57th Street\, the Hamilton Gallery of Contemporary Art. This was 1977\, and 10% of women were dealers\, and most had family money. She raised all the money to open and showed 60-70% women. She wanted to show mid-career artists who had been ignored by the world. What better reason to show women? She showed Louise Bourgeois (for the first time in a commercial gallery in 15 years)\, Grace Hartigan\, Deborah Remington\, and Joan Snyder. Six of the artists have attained blue-chip status. Aside from Louise\, Deborah\, and Joan\, she would include Ron Gorchov\, Sam Gilliam\, and Robert Colescott. Then\, due to a family tragedy\, she closed in 1984 and became an artist’s agent. She rented pop-up spaces and showed artists in New York\, Chicago\, and Los Angeles. In 1990\, she moved to Los Angeles before it was fashionable. She became the first director of the Salander-O’Reilly Gallery and then went off on her own\, selling art to Hollywood collectors. Today\, she lives in Whitley Heights in Los Angeles with her two dogs and is peaceful and content.

SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa\, Hisako Hibi\, and Miné Okubo" at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa\, Hisako Hibi\, and Miné Okubo at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, led by Melissa Ho\, Curator of 20th Century Art. \n\n\n\nMiki Hayakawa (1899-1953)\, Hisako Hibi (1907-1991)\, and Miné Okubo (1912-2001) were three of the most active and critically acclaimed American artists of Japanese descent in the years leading up to World War II. Their careers spanned eight decades and four US states\, yet the full extent of their contributions remain underrecognized within twentieth-century American art history. \n\n\n\nPictures of Belonging is an unprecedented examination of these three trailblazing figures. By tracing their artistic development before\, during\, and after the mass incarceration and displacement of Japanese Americans during World War II\, the exhibition offers a nuanced view of how these women continued to explore and experiment with new artistic expression throughout their lives. Created during tumultuous decades in modern US history\, their paintings\, along with their stories of resilience\, remind us of art’s power in the face of adversity and challenge. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the exhibition. \n\n\n\nPlease review the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s accessibility page for available accommodations. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease note that ArtTable registration fees go toward administrative costs for the nonprofit organization. The Smithsonian American Art Museum does not charge an admission fee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Melissa Ho \n\n\n\nMelissa Ho is the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s curator of 20th-century art; she joined the museum’s staff in September 2016. Ho is responsible for research\, acquisitions and exhibitions related to the museum’s collections focusing on art since 1945. She currently is leading an initiative to expand and enrich the representation of Asian American experiences\, perspectives and artistic accomplishment in the museum’s collection and public displays. \n\n\n\nRecent projects include “American Voices and Visions: Modern and Contemporary Art” (2023)\, the first phase of a multiyear renewal and reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection galleries\, and “Composing Color: The Paintings of Alma Thomas” (2023)\, which will travel to several venues in the United States. Ho organized the critically acclaimed exhibition “Artists Respond: American Art and the Vietnam War\, 1965-1975” (2019) and “Artist to Artist” (2021). \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Ho worked as a curator at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden from 2011 to 2016\, where she organized “Barbara Kruger: Belief+Doubt” (2012)\, “Salvatore Scarpitta: Traveler” (2014) and “Shirin Neshat: Facing History” (2015) with Melissa Chiu. She also co-curated with Evelyn Hankins “At the Hub of Things” (2014)\, a re-installation of the museum’s collection. \n\n\n\nHo earned a bachelor’s degree in studio art and art history from Princeton University and a master’s degree in art history from the University of Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage credits:Miki Hayakawa\, One Afternoon\, ca. 1935\, oil on canvas\, 40 x 40 in.\, New Mexico Museum of Art\, Santa Fe\, Gift of Preston McCrossen in memory of his wife\, the artist\, 1954\, 520.23P

SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Curator-Led Tour of "Anonymous Was a Woman: The First 25 Years" at NYU's Grey Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Anonymous Was A Woman: The First 25 Years at the Grey Art Museum at New York University\, led by exhibition co-curators Nancy Princenthal and Dr. Vesela Sretenović. \n\n\n\nIn 1996\, artist and philanthropist Susan Unterberg founded the Anonymous Was A Woman (AWAW) award\, making a simple\, yet radical commitment to redress the lack of institutional support for women visual artists over the age of 40. She sought to provide mid-career artists with the means to procure workspace\, art supplies\, childcare\, or whatever else they needed to further their artistic careers. For the past two and a half decades\, AWAW has provided unrestricted grants of $25\,000 to ten or more artists each year. \n\n\n\nShowcasing some 50 artworks by 41 of the 251 award recipients from AWAW’s first 25 years (1996 through 2020)\, this exhibition explores several themes surrounding anonymity and\, ultimately\, celebrates the transformative impact women artists have made on contemporary art since the award’s founding. With each year represented by at least one artist\, the exhibition includes works created within a few years of their grant\, demonstrating the significance of the award to the artist’s growth. The range of artists featured in the exhibition demonstrates the demographic and aesthetic diversity of past awardees. All 251 artists are represented in a publication accompanying the exhibition\, which also includes critical essays about the awardees by Princenthal\, Sretenović\, and other women scholars. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the landmark exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\nVisitor Notes: \n\n\n\n\nThe Grey is fully walker- and wheelchair-accessible\, and several portable stools are available to borrow for use within the galleries upon request.\n\n\n\nPlease note that large bags and backpacks must be checked in a secure locker\, and food & drink (including water bottles) are not permitted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\n\n\nAll registrants for this event will be provided with a 20% discount on ArtTable’s limited edition scarf celebrating 25 Years of Anonymous Was a Woman\, created in 2021 in conjunction with ArtTable’s 45 year anniversary and the year Susan Unterberg received the Distinguished Service to the Visual Arts Award. Made of 100% silk habotai\, only a handful of scarves remain in our inventory! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Washington\, DC | Curator-Led Tour of "Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist" at the National Gallery of Art
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist at the National Gallery of Art\, led by Dr. Lynn K. Matheny\, Deputy Head of Interpretation and Curator of Special Projects. \n\n\n\nThis retrospective exhibition showcases the enduring legacy of Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012) as a visionary artist and an unwavering activist. As the most comprehensive presentation devoted to Catlett in the United States\, it features more than 150 works\, including well-known sculpture and prints\, rare paintings and drawings\, and important ephemera. The exhibition is co-organized by the Brooklyn Museum and the National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, and presented in collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago. \n\n\n\nOne of the defining artists of the 20th century\, Elizabeth Catlett addressed the injustices she witnessed and experienced through her bold prints and dynamic sculptures. In striving to make art for the people—from her roots in Washington\, DC\, Chicago\, and New York to the remarkable body of work she made during some 60 years in Mexico—Catlett put social justice at the very center of her work. An avowed feminist\, lifelong activist\, and deft formalist\, Catlett passionately addressed injustices such as class inequality\, racial violence\, and U.S. expansionism through her politically engaged art\, injustices which continue to shape the world today. \n\n\n\n\n\n“I have been\, and am currently\, and always hope to be a Black Revolutionary Artist and all that it implies.”– Elizabeth Catlett\, 1970 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the exhibition and this visionary artist-activist. \n\n\n\nPlease review the National Gallery of Art’s accessibility page for available accommodations. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:New York\, NY | ArtTable’s Art Law Series: Building and Managing a Fine Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third installment of ArtTable’s Art Law Series\, produced in partnership with Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP. In this conversation\, we will explore the various roles and responsibilities that are involved when building and managing an art collection. Coinciding with the Spring art fair season in New York\, a city whose contemporary art scene is constantly evolving\, this panel will focus on the professionals who help collectors navigate the collection- building and management process. What resources are available to guide collectors when purchasing artworks? How should a collector care for the art once it is in their collection? What are the responsibilities when owning fine art that new collectors might not be aware of? We will hear from several arts professionals involved at the different stages of collection-building\, from the initial purchase to long-time care and conservation. \n\n\n\nThis conversation will build on topics explored in the first two conversations in this series: Responsible Transacting in the Art Market (held at Patterson Belknap’s New York office in April 2024) and From Purchase to Patronage: Stewarding Your Growing Collection (hosted at Untitled Art Miami Beach in December 2024\, with additional support from Private Client Select and SRI Fine Art Services). If you missed us in Miami Beach\, you can enjoy our December conversation courtesy of the Untitled Art Fairs Podcast! \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nModerator: Anne-Laure Allehaut\, Counsel\, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP\n\n\n\nSharon Chrust\, President\, Sharon Chrust & Associates\n\n\n\nMaura Kehoe Collins\, Principal\, Artiphile\n\n\n\nTanya Wells\, Owner\, TMSW Art Advisory\n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease note that ArtTable registration fees go toward administrative costs for the organization. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is hosted in partnership with and supported by Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnne-Laure Alléhaut is Counsel in Patterson Belknap’s Art and Museum Law practice. Anne-Laure started her career at Skadden Arps in M&A before serving as a Senior Vice President of Sotheby’s legal transactional team\, negotiating many of the auction house’s most complex and high value transactions while also overseeing Sotheby’s advisory\, appraisal and valuation departments. \n\n\n\nAnne-Laure brings 18 years of law firm and in-house experience to the art industry and draws on her broad and deep experience to advise her clients with speed and efficiency. SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Curator-Led Tour of "Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets" at the American Folk Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets at the American Folk Art Museum\, led by Valérie Rousseau\, PhD\, Curatorial Chair and Senior Curator of 20th-Century & Contemporary Art. \n\n\n\nFeaturing 42 textile works and oil paintings\, Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets is the first comprehensive survey of Santos Reinbolt’s art ever presented and marks the first-ever solo museum exhibition for the artist organized outside her native Brazil. Best known for her large-scale embroideries made from hundreds of vibrant colored threads\, which the artist referred to as quadros de lã (“wool paintings”)\, the exhibition represents more than half of all known works by the artist and examines the artist’s work through a variety of lenses\, including gender\, race\, and socio-economic dynamics. \n\n\n\nA Head Full of Planets explores the context in which Santos Reinbolt’s artistic practice crystallized in the early 1950s\, after she became a live-in cook for the architect Lota de Macedo Soares and her partner\, the American poet Elizabeth Bishop\, at their home in Petrópolis\, a mountain getaway favored by Brazilian high society. It was not until the mid-1960s\, while working in another household\, that she began to dedicate herself to embroidery and would begin creating many of the works for which she is best known today. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the exhibition and this mysterious yet extraordinary artist\, as well as a recent artnet article about the exhibition and Dr. Rousseau’s curatorial process. \n\n\n\nThe American Folk Art Museum is fully accessible. Gallery stools and wheelchairs are available upon request\, and an access ramp is available to enter the upper gallery if needed. If you require additional accommodations\, please email us at programs@arttable.org. \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Boston\, MA | MeetAT at Gallery NAGA
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to our next Boston MeetAT networking event on May 22\, graciously hosted by Meg White\, Director of Gallery NAGA. Join us for an evening of light refreshments and engaging conversations with fellow ArtTable members and new connections. \n\n\n\nLocated within the Church of the Covenant in Boston’s historic Back Bay neighborhood\, Gallery NAGA (formerly Newbury Associated Guild of Artists) was founded in 1977\, when a group of artists placed their work on display in what used to be the chapel of the church.  \n\n\n\nAs we approach our 50th year\, we continue NAGA’s legacy as an inclusive and contemplative sanctuary for art and dialogue\, supporting both emerging and established artists in the New England area and beyond. \n\n\n\nWhile our primary focus is painting\, we also represent exceptional contemporary photographers\, printmakers\, and sculptors. We specialize in studio furniture\, presenting many of the premier makers of unique and limited edition furniture in the country. \n\n\n\nFor this event\, Gallery NAGA is pleased to present our fourth major solo exhibition of paintings by Nicole Chesney. \n\n\n\nNicole Chesney: New Paintings is on exhibition from May 2 to 31.  \n\n\n\nNicole Chesney’s abstract paintings are oil paint on acid-etched and mirrored glass.  This exhibition continues Chesney’s endless wondering with notions of sky and water and investigations of perception. \n\n\n\nGlass\, with all its transformative qualities\, is a surface onto which Nicole Chesney can add\, subtract\, and move oil paint around; colors are reflected in a way that canvas or paper doesn’t allow for.  Seen from one angle\, her painting surfaces are matte and brushy\, seen from another angle\, they are reflective and elusive. \n\n\n\nChesney’s work is exhibited and collected internationally including the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, New Britain Museum of American Art\, Toledo Museum of Art\, Newport Art Museum\, RISD Museum\, Palm Springs Art Museum\, Corning Museum of Glass and many more. \n\n\n\nAre you considering joining ArtTable and want to know more about who we are and what we do? SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Curator-Led Tour of "Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers" with Jodi Hauptman
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind Flowers at the Museum of Modern Art! The tour will be led by Jodi Hauptman\, The Richard Roth Senior Curator\, Department of Drawings and Prints at MoMA. \n\n\n\nIn the spring and summer of 1919 and 1920\, during a period of intense engagement with nature\, artist Hilma af Klint drew flowers almost every day. “I will try\,” she wrote\, “to grasp the flowers of the earth.” This exhibition focuses on a portfolio of drawings new to MoMA’s collection—jewel-toned watercolors made by a keen-eyed naturalist\, attuned to the rhythms and bounty of the blooming season. \n\n\n\nBreaking with traditional botanical art\, af Klint juxtaposed her exquisitely rendered blossoms with precisely drawn diagrams: a blooming sunflower is echoed by nested circles; a marsh marigold is accompanied by mirrored spirals; a cluster of budding branches is set against checkerboards of dots and strokes. With this profusion of forms—an expansion of the abstract language for which she is best known—af Klint visualizes “what stands behind the flowers\,” demonstrating her belief that careful observation of her surroundings reveals ineffable aspects of the human condition. \n\n\n\nAf Klint imagined her portfolio as an atlas—or in botanical terms a flora—that details the plants of Sweden\, where she lived and worked. Hers\, however\, is a flora of the spirit\, a mapping of the natural world in spiritual terms that would stand alongside any scientific resource. Putting representation and abstraction\, close looking and envisioning\, art and botany into dialogue\, af Klint’s drawings recognize the interconnectedness of all living things. “I have shown\,” she wrote\, “that there is a connection between the plant world and the world of the soul.” \n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission: $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease note that ArtTable registration fees go toward administrative costs for the organization. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtTable’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage courtesy of the Museum of Modern Art

SUMMARY:Philadelphia\, PA | MeetAT at Arthur Ross Gallery
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a Philadelphia MeetAT networking event on May 30\, graciously hosted by Emily Zimmerman\, Director of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs at Arthur Ross Gallery. Join us for an evening of light refreshments and engaging conversations with fellow ArtTable members and new connections. \n\n\n\nThe Arthur Ross Gallery has a mission is to Engage\, Educate\, and Inspire. The Arthur Ross Gallery is a resource for the entire University community\, across schools and departments\, as well as the local community and scholars around the world. Located at the heart of the University of Pennsylvania\, the Arthur Ross Gallery is an intimate exhibition space that presents thought-provoking exhibitions of art across cultures\, media and time. Curators\, scholars\, artists\, and Penn students present original research through our exhibitions\, symposia\, and curatorial seminars. Exhibition-related programs include films\, music\, performances\, spoken word\, talks\, and tours. \n\n\n\nHoused in the historic Fisher Fine Arts Library building on the main campus of one of the world’s great research universities\, the Arthur Ross Gallery serves both the University and the Philadelphia communities. The Gallery is committed to advancing the teaching and research missions of the University through integrating knowledge across disciplines\, innovation\, and providing access through local\, national\, and global engagement. \n\n\n\nThe Gallery is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nFor this event\, Arthur Ross Gallery is pleased to present Scattered Earth\, Sounded Depth: Penn Fine Arts MFA Thesis Exhibition\, featuring the work of Eissa Attar and Alvin Luong. \n\n\n\nThrough installation\, moving image\, and printmaking\, Attar and Luong offer poetic reflections on landscapes and cultural histories. Their works explore geography as a site of cultural memory and migration while critically examining documentary practices and modes of display. \n\n\n\nEissa Attar’s practice investigates migration\, belonging\, and entropy through photography and moving image works. In Extract You Again\, a series of sand drawings on acetate layered over images of consumer products and waste\, Attar reflects on cycles of consumption and erasure in Saudi Arabia’s evolving landscape. \n\n\n\nAlvin Luong’s multichannel video installation\, Corals of Bidong\, connects the history of Malaysia’s Bidong Island—once a refugee camp following the Vietnam War—to its present-day use as a coral research facility and a dubious coral wildlife trade. Developed over two years of intensive research\, the work offers a profound meditation on human and natural migration. Through video\, sculpture\, and installation\, Luong examines narratives of survival and the enduring social and environmental impacts of historical events. \n\n\n\nCurated by Emily Zimmerman\, Director of Exhibitions at the Arthur Ross Gallery\, this exhibition marks the debut of the MFA Thesis Exhibition at the Arthur Ross Gallery. \n\n\n\nAre you considering joining ArtTable and want to know more about who we are and what we do?
