She is represented by the Claire Oliver Gallery in New York. \nAbout the exhibition\nPackaged Black brings together the work of artists Derrick Adams (b. 1970\, Baltimore\, MD) and Barbara Earl Thomas (b. 1948\, Seattle\, WA) in a collaborative\, multi-media installation developed from their shared dialogue about representation\, Black identity\, and practices of cultural resistance. This exhibition is a synthesis of a multi-year\, intergenerational\, and cross-country exchange between New York-based Adams and Seattle-based Thomas that began after the two artists exhibited work alongside each other in a group show at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2017. For this exhibition\, Thomas draws upon the role of media and fairytales in shaping social expectations and her own conception of self. She is presenting all new work\, including an immersive installation conceived as a ‘transformation room’ and a series of new cut-paper portraits of friends and colleagues that riff on the concept of the royal court. \n  \nThank you to ArtTable’s Northwest Chapter Leaders Jessica Landau\, Judith Rinehart\, and Gina Broze for organizing this program.\n \n\nImage: Barbara Earl Thomas. SUMMARY:Virtual | Preserving Cultural Heritage in Afghanistan & Beyond\, with Laura Tedesco & Anna Bottinelli
DESCRIPTION:9am PT / 10am MT / 11am CT / 12pm ET\nAfghanistan is currently facing an incredible crisis. Since the US left the country and Taliban forces reentered\, many aspects of daily life have come into question\, including how the country’s cultural heritage will be affected. Just two decades ago\, when the Taliban were last in power\, they called for the destruction of any and all pre-Islamic statues and sanctuaries on the land. While this new regime has promised to honor Afghanistan’s cultural heritage\, history makes us skeptical. \nOne woman who has spent many years living and traveling throughout Afghanistan\, overseeing the preservation of its archaeological sites\, artifacts\, monuments\, and museums\, is Laura Tedesco\, Cultural Heritage Program Manager at the U.S. Department of State. As a cultural heritage and preservation specialist\, Laura has experienced firsthand the challenges of preserving art and heritage amidst conflict\, an experience she shares with Anna Bottinelli\, President of the Monuments Men Foundation. Join us for a discussion about the preservation of cultural heritage in Afghanistan and beyond with these two leading experts! \nAdmission \n\nArtTable Circle members – Free\nAll other ArtTable members – $10\nNon-Members – $15\nMembers may bring a guest for an additional $15.\n\n \n  \nNot a member? Join today for reduced admission on most programs! \nCan’t make the program at this time? Register anyway to receive a recording after! \nAccessibility: Please note that this program will offer live closed captioning. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\nAbout the speakers\n \nDr. Laura A. Tedesco serves as the Cultural Heritage Program Manager for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. Laura’s work is centered on supporting U.S. Embassies across the region in identifying and guiding cultural preservation projects supported by the Department of State. In 2021 there are more than 30 active projects that preserve intangible and built heritage of more than 12 nations. Now based in Washington\, D.C. and Charleston\, S.C.\, she previously worked in Afghanistan at the U.S. Embassy from 2010-2012 developing and overseeing the State Department’s large-scale initiatives to support the preservation of Afghanistan’s imperiled cultural patrimony. Prior to joining the Department of State\, Laura worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for 13 years. She has also worked in the private sector field of cultural resources management\, managing archaeological recovery of cultural resources for land development and corporate investment programs. Tedesco has participated in archaeological excavations in Syria\, Palestine\, the Republics of Armenia and Georgia\, Italy\, Cyprus\, and in several locations across the United States. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from New York University. Laura has a popular podcast that focuses on her personal story of the challenges she’s faced as a woman carrying out heritage preservation programs in Afghanistan. The title of the podcast is Monuments Woman. \nBorn and raised in Florence\, Italy\, Anna Bottinelli earned her B.A. in History of Art from John Cabot University (JCU) in Rome\, graduating Magna Cum Laude. There\, she was also the recipient of numerous accolades including the 2010 JCU Excellence in Art History Award and JCU Leadership Award. In 2011\, she received her M.A. in Art History at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She specialized in the Franciscan and Dominican Art of 13th century Italy. At the same time\, Ms. Bottinelli began work as the lead Italian research assistant to #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Robert Edsel on his project to write about the Monuments Men and their preservation work in Italy during World War II. Her work contributed greatly to the success of Mr. Edsel’s acclaimed bestseller\, “Saving Italy: The Race to Save a Nation’s Treasure from the Nazi.” \nIn 2014\, Ms. Bottinelli accepted a full time research position with the Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art\, in Dallas\, Texas. By 2017\, she had advanced to senior leadership positions and in December 2019\, she was appointed as the Foundation’s new President\, succeeding its founder\, Mr. Edsel . During her tenure at the Foundation\, Ms. Bottinelli has overseen numerous restitutions of cultural objects to individuals and museums in Europe. She has also served as a consultant for “Hunting Nazi Treasure\,” an eight-part investigative documentary that continues to air on Discovery’s American Heroes Channel\, History Channel-Canada\, and Canale Focus in Italy\, with additional future broadcasts planned internationally. \nToday Ms. Bottinelli is considered an expert on the subject of art looting and recovery during World War II. She regularly is a point of contact for provenance attorneys seeking expert opinions on art restitution cases involving Italy. Ms. Bottinelli has close ties with the art restitution unit of the Italian Carabinieri\, who have been steadfast supporters of the Monuments Men Foundation and its mission. Anna Bottinelli is currently based in Dallas with her husband and two little boys. She divides her time between the U.S. and Italy. \n\nImages: Laura Tedesco in Ghazni\, Afghanistan; Laurie Tedesco\, The Monuments Woman photographed for publication by Jackie Neale October\, 2021 in Charleston\, SC; Anna Bottinelli

SUMMARY:Virtual | Reading at the (Art)Table - 'We Flew Over the Bridge: The Memoirs of Faith Ringgold'
DESCRIPTION:11am PT / 12pm MT / 1pm CT / 2pm ET\nJoin us on Sunday\, January 9 at 11am PT/2pm ET for our next Reading at the (Art)Table program\, where we will be discussing “We Flew Over the Bridge: The Memoirs of Faith Ringgold.”  We look forward to having a lively discussion! \nIn “We Flew over the Bridge\,” one of the country’s preeminent African American artists—and award-winning children’s book authors—shares the fascinating story of her life. Faith Ringgold’s artworks—startling “story quilts\,” politically charged paintings\, and more—hang in the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Guggenheim Museum\, the Museum of Modern Art\, and other major museums around the world\, as well as in the private collections of Maya Angelou and Oprah Winfrey (among others). \nHer children’s books\, including the Caldecott Honor Book “Tar Beach\,” have sold hundreds of thousands of copies. But Ringgold’s path to success has not been easy. In this gorgeously illustrated memoir\, she looks back and shares the story of her struggles\, growth\, and triumphs. Ringgold recollects how she had to surmount prejudices as she worked to refine her artistic vision and raise a family. At the same time\, the story she tells is one of warm family memories\, sustaining friendships\, community involvement\, and hope for the future. \nThis program is free and open to ArtTable members only. Not a member? Join today! \n  \n \n  \n\nImage: “We Flew Over the Bridge: The Memoirs of Faith Ringgold” \nThank you to Jan Wurm\, ArtTable Northern California Chapter\, for organizing this program.

DESCRIPTION:9am PT / 10am MT / 11am CT / 12pm ET\nPlease join Doro Globus\, Managing Director of David Zwirner Books\, and Genevieve Martin\, Director of External Affairs and Advancement at the Children’s Museum of the Arts\, for a discussion on the motivation behind Globus’ newly published children’s book\, Making a Great Exhibition. SUMMARY:Virtual | Listening to Native American Voices: Reimagining & Honoring a Diverse Heritage
DESCRIPTION:3pm PT/ 4pm MT / 5pm CT / 6pm ET\nIn this 4th and final program in ArtTable’s Monuments and Memorials series\, we shift our attention to those memorials that bear witness to Native American heritage\, through their own voices. By exploring Native American memorials and sites\, we will learn how they honor and preserve cultural memory in the United States. This series continues to ask: whose stories are we telling and who is telling them?\n\nJoin us for a discussion with artists Malynn Foster (Coast Salish of Squaxin Island) and Erin Genia (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate)\, as well as attorney Shannon O’Loughlin (Citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma). Foster and Genia will each speak about their artistic practice\, as well as reimagine\, re-contextualize\, or otherwise address the general conversation around public monuments and memorials. O’Loughlin will bring our focus to some sites of memory that are sacred to Native Americans\, sharing the need to protect and preserve them. The presentations and discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.\n\nIn the previous three programs in this series\, we looked at “old stories and new narratives through other lenses” with Harriet Senie\, Alison Saar and Marisa Williamson\, with a special focus on creating sites of public memory\, particularly for the disenfranchised\, as so eloquently expressed by Judy Baca and her “Great Wall of Los Angeles.” The series included a fall walking tour in Harlem to view the sculptures honoring Duke Ellington\, Harriet Tubman\, and Frederick Douglass.\n\nAdmission\n\n ArtTable Circle Members– Free\n All other ArtTable Members – $10\n Non-Members – $15\n Members may bring an additional guest for $5\n\nNot an ArtTable member? Join today!\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nCan’t make the program at this time? Register anyway to receive a recording after!\n\nPlease note that this program will offer automatic closed captioning services. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org.\n\nArtTable is a 501.c.3 organization. All programs are non-refundable.\n\n\n\nAbout the speakers\nErin Genia (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate) is a multidisciplinary artist\, educator\, and community organizer specializing in Native American and Indigenous arts and culture. Her work in these areas focuses on amplifying the under-recognized presence of native peoples in the arts\, sciences\, and the public arena. Erin earned an M.S. in Art\, Culture\, and Technology from MIT and an M.P.A. in Tribal Governance from Evergreen State College. She also studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts. In recent years\, her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at Boston’s Urbano Project\, the Venice Biennale\, Ars Electronica\, The Museum of Northwest Art\, and the International Space Station. Public commissions have come from the Tufts University Art Galleries\, the Minnesota Historical Society\, the City of St. Paul\, and the City of Seattle. Also in the public realm\, Erin was named artist-in-residence with the City of Boston (2020-2021) and co-founded\, “Centering Justice: Indigenous Artists’ Perspectives on Public Art\,” with the New England Foundation for the Arts’ Public Art Team.\n\nShannon O’Loughlin is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma\, and the Chief Executive and Attorney for the oldest non-profit serving Indian Country – the Association on American Indian Affairs. Shannon received a B.A. in American Indian Studies from California State University\, Long Beach. She then received joint M.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Arizona in Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy.\n\nMalynn Wilbur-Foster is a Squaxin Island tribal member\, raised among her people near the Skokomish and Squaxin Island reservations where she has lived most of her life. She works in a variety of media \, including weaving\, painting\, jewelry\, and carving both stone and wood. Malynn is always looking for new ways to tell the stories of her people fusing tradition and technology.\n\nSince 1998\, her work has been shown in galleries and featured in\n\n\n\nbooks. It has also entered collections of the Seattle Art Museum\, Burke Museum\, and Washington State History Museum. Additionally she has collaborated on a number of commissioned works in the Seattle area\, with family members and friends. 2020 brought a significant new commission: Malynn is now collaborating with Tamela LaClair and Kimberly Deriana\, as a team\, known as the MTK Matriarchs.\n\nThey have been selected as the artists for the Salish Steps\, part of the Seattle project re-imagining the city’s waterfront. Representing both local tribes and Urban Natives\, they are working with the design team\, developing a permanent artwork to elevate the importance of indigenous culture and history to this very public site. Malynn has received grants for her achievements in both art and for being an indigenous knowledge keeper.\n\n \n\nThank you to ArtTable members Cathie Behrend\, former Deputy Director of New York’s Percent for Art Program and founder of VenturesinVision\, and Lori Shepard\, Independent art advisor\, for organizing this program series.\n\n\n\nImages:\n\n Erin Genia\, “Acoustic Tipi.” Courtesy of the artist.\n Erin Genia\, courtesy of the artist\n Shannon O’Loughlin\, courtesy of the speaker\n Pueblo Bonito\, Chaco Canyon\, Courtesy of the National Park Service\n Malynn Wilbur-Foster\, courtesy of Sam Jones of Quinn/Brein Communication\n “Seal Roost\,” woven by Malynn Foster

We hope you’ll join us to celebrate the new year and toast to ArtTable and our wonderful NY members!\n\nThis event is for ArtTable members only. Not a member? Join us today!\n\n \n\n\n\nArtTable is a 501.c.3 organization. All programs are non-refundable.\n\nIf you can’t attend but would still like to support ArtTable\, please consider making a donation here!\n\nAccessibility: Please note that this program will offer live closed captioning. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org.\n\n\n\nAbout Randy Rosen\nAn independent curator\, adviser\, author\, and an adjunct professor at New York University’s School of Professional Studies for over a decade\, Randy joined ArtTable shortly after the organization’s founding. Since then\, she’s actively contributed to its history and growth\, organizing innovative programs and spearheading innumerable initiatives that have helped raise ArtTable’s voice and visibility in the art world.\n\nWorking with ArtTable founder Lila Harnett and founding member Carol Morgan\, Randy helped launch and edit ArtWire\, the organization’s first newsletter\, and a “first” in connecting professional women leaders across the country to readily share art projects\, explore job opportunities and raise awareness for critical developments in their fields. As an officer of the Board and a member of the Board’s Executive Committee\, Randy advocated for strategic program planning and partnerships that would establish ArtTable as a “change-maker” organization elevating the status of professional women in the visual arts\, but also as an outward-looking platform engaging with thought-leaders and ground-breaking artists bringing new ideas and issues to the art world discourse.\n\nTwice Co-chair of the New York Chapter Communications Committee\, Randy was tasked to become editor\, teaming up with managing editor\, Barbra Cavaliere\, and designer\, Renee Skuba\, to produce Changing the Equation: Women’s Leadership in the Visual Arts\, 1980-2005\, for ArtTable’s 25th anniversary\, a book that documented the organization’s pivotal role in advancing opportunities for professional women in the visual arts. Randy also served as Chair of the New York Chapter Programs Committee\, and later as a long-time committee member\, she continued to organize thought-provoking programs\, among them ArtTable’s very first year-long series: The Digitization of The Art World\, a series of panels\, talks\, seminars\, and workshops partnering with The New Museum\, Sony Wonder Lab\, MoMA\, Artsy\, and The School of Visual Arts in examining the transformative impact of digitization and new media on the art world.\n\nThat penchant for innovative and intellectually stimulating programming became a hallmark of Randy Rosen Arts Associates (RRAA)\, the business she opened in the 1980s. In her more than 30 years as a specialist in developing art programming\, corporate art collections\, traveling museum exhibitions\, and their associated educational agendas\, she’s built a reputation for eschewing formulaic\, boilerplate formats for approaches that extend the impact of the visual arts in the workplace and increase the representation of women and artists of color and diverse backgrounds.\n\nHer experience includes working with large and smaller companies\, among them Bristol Myers\, Verizon\, Sony\, Telemundo\, Maidenform\, Rudin Management\, Lakeview Capital\, and for over 15 years as curator of the AlixPartners Global Art Program. She served as a member of Polaroid’s Cultural Advisory Task Force and as founding curator and manager of “On The Leading Edge: Cross-Currents in Contemporary Art\,” the General Electric company’s original Art Program. With associate curator\, Catherine Brawer\, Randy curated\, and RRAA organized\, the landmark traveling museum exhibition\, Making Their Mark: Women Artists Move into the Mainstream\, 1970-1985. The show’s catalog included the first comprehensive\, inter-generational research on institutional and art world barriers to the visibility and advancement of women artists.\n\nRandy has collaborated on projects with institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, The Whitney Museum\, The Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art\, The Denver Art Museum\, Houston’s Blaffer Gallery\, The McNay Institute\, San Antonio\, and Boston’s Museum of The National Center of Afro-American Artists\, and others. An author of several books on art\, including Prints\, a history of printmaking\, and numerous articles\, her forthcoming book\, The Selective Eye: Seeing Beyond Beauty\, will be released this spring. She’s currently working on a new exhibition and catalogue\, In Process: Contemporary Photographers Rethinking Their Medium\, opening in March\, 2022.\n\n\n\nThank you to ArtTable New York Programs Committee Co-Chairs\, Sarah McNaughton and Regan Lynn Larroque\, and Membership Committee Co-Chair Edie Meyer for organizing this event.

Katrib co-curated SITE Santa Fe’s 2018 biennial\, Casa Tomada\, along with José Luis Blondet and Candice Hopkins. \nAbout the exhibition\nFeaturing the work of 47 artists and collectives\, Greater New York opens up geographic and historical boundaries by expanding familiar narratives around artists and art movements in New York. Bridging strategies of the documentary and the archive on the one hand\, and surrealism and fabulation on the other\, the exhibition considers the ways that artists record experiences of belonging and estrangement. Drawing connections across the interdisciplinary practices of international and intergenerational artists\, Greater New York examines the many ways that affinities form in relation to place and through time. \nThe exhibition foregrounds the resilience of artists and artist communities in the city\, while marking ways these artists have both profoundly shaped New York\, and borne witness to its many transformations. As New York emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic\, the exhibition offers an opportunity to mourn\, celebrate\, and reconnect with artist communities. This iteration of Greater New York honors not only the persistence of artists\, many of whom have worked unrecognized over decades\, but their ability to help us make sense of the many ruptures—social\, political\, and ecological—that have shaped New York City in this critical and transformative moment. \n\nImage: Installation view of Shanzhai Lyric\, Incomplete Poem (2015-ongoing). Weisman Art Foundation is dedicated to continuing the legacy and vision of Frederick R. Weisman\, an extraordinary entrepreneur\, philanthropist\, and art collector. He held an uncompromising belief in the cultural value of art and understood the importance of both the individual artist and creative process. \nIn 1982\, Frederick R. Weisman purchased the Los Angeles estate to serve as a showcase for his personal collection of 20th-century art. He and his wife Billie Milam Weisman\, an art conservator and curator\, worked together to create a unique environment located within the Mediterranean-style villa. The villa was designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann in the late 1920s and exhibits the craftsmanship characteristics of that period\, including hand-painted ceilings\, stucco details\, and wood-inlaid floors. \nIn 1991\, the Weismans added a contemporary annex\, or art pavilion\, designed by Franklin D.Israel\, to accommodate larger-scale works. Today the Foundation estate\, annex\, and surrounding gardens is made accessible to the public by appointment only on guided tours. \nMore than four hundred works of art are on display at the Foundation. The collection includes works by European Modernists including Cezanne\, Picasso\, and Kandinsky and Surrealist works by Ernst\, Miro\, and Magritte. The holdings in postwar art include works by Giacometti\, Noguchi\, Calder\, Rauschenberg\, and Johns; Abstract Expressionist paintings by de Kooning\, Francis\, Still\, and Rothko; Color-Field paintings by Frankenthaler\, Louis\, and Noland; and Pop Art by Warhol\, Lichtenstein\, Oldenburg\, and Rosenquist. \nContemporary California works include those by Ruscha and Goode\, and Super Realist sculptures by Hanson and de Andrea. These holdings are part of a larger collection that Mr. Weisman established as the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in 1982. \nCurrently under the direction of Billie Milam Weisman\, the Foundation continues to make the collection available through loans to museums worldwide\, docent tours at the Los Angeles estate\, exhibitions in public-art venues\, and the funding of several art museums\, including the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University in Malibu\, the New Orleans Museum of Art\, the San Diego Museum of Art\, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota\, designed by Frank O. Gehry. \n\nImage: Courtesy of the foundation.
