SUMMARY:Virtual | Fine Art in Healthcare with Melissa Dallal\, Ellen Rudolph\, Cade Tompkins\, Susana Bautista\, and Jane Borthwick
DESCRIPTION:3 pm PDT / 4 pm MDT / 5 pm CDT / 6 pm EDT\n\n\n\nMajor medical institutions take art seriously and recognize its importance in healthcare settings. Creating sophisticated cultural spaces in these environments is its own professional discipline—parallel to how art advisors collaborate with art and design partners in hospitality and corporate settings\, but with its own purpose\, parameters\, and vision. Join us for a fascinating virtual panel discussion featuring Melissa Dallal\, Project Manager\, Interior Design at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Ellen Rudolph\, in-house Curator and Senior Director\, Cleveland Clinic Art Collection; Susana Smith Bautista\, Associate Vice President and Chief Curator\, AltaMed Art Collection; and curator and gallerist Cade Tompkins of Cade Tompkins Projects. The conversation will be moderated by art advisor and collection strategist—and former ArtTable Board President—Jane Borthwick. We’ll look at themes including how art advisors in this field access art and artists\, and how they can identify artists from diverse and adjacent community backgrounds who can connect with the patient\, staff\, and visitor populations at specific locations. Art advisors also identify and present emergent talent whose work will appreciate in value and that is affordable for healthcare institutions. We will hear about evolving and innovative collaborative models where art advisors are actively incorporating the input of stakeholders including healthcare professionals\, patients\, and families; ultimately serving the purpose of healing and inspiration in these communities while creating a built-in stewardship of the collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nComplimentary with optional donation\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:National | Philadelphia\, PA | Artist-Led Tour of Chelsey Luster's "Finding Home" Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for an artist talk and exhibition tour with Chelsey Luster! Luster’s immersive solo exhibition “Finding Home” at Vox Populi Gallery tells the stories of their models’ safe spaces through mixed-media paintings\, text\, and film. Each model’s individual story informs the creation of these imaginative havens that come together to form a physical safe space. The exhibition acts as a place of healing for black and queer people and the respective communities. Luster highlights their identity and perspective through the luminescence of black skin with fluorescent undertones and the vibrance of queerness through shimmering overlays of glitter. Other materials\, such oil and acrylic paints\, fabric\, glue\, market on paper\, wood panels\, found objects\, and canvas\, come together to materialize these idyllic realms. \n“At the beginning of my practice\, I focused on self-portraiture and explored the lack of security and safety as a Queer Black woman through depictions of unsettling bathroom scenes in “The American Bathroom” series. This body of work critiqued our failed incarceration system and the unhinged violence I experienced along with others in my community through large-scale erie-colored oil paintings on wooden panels. I developed creative programming and community building with other Queer\, Women\, and Black-led organizations and community leaders through talks\, fellowships\, and residencies that allowed me to collaborate on performances and discussions on Black and Queerness with regards to self-autonomy\, community discussions\, and collage workshops that welcomed people of all artistic backgrounds to create work that explored identity. Through this work\, I shared the universal feeling of wanting to feel safe with individuals of all backgrounds. Through the relationships formed and stories I heard during the creation of “The American Bathroom” series\, I knew that our stories could not end with trauma and violence. I discovered that creating a sacred space within myself and others in my community leads to healing\, peace\, and safety. This inspired my current project “Finding Home.” “ \nAdmission: \n\n\n\nArtTable Members $10\nMember Guests $20\nPublic $25\nNot a member? Luster\, 20″ x 30″\, 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChelsey Luster is a Philadelphia-based visual artist and educator from Baltimore\, Maryland. Luster’s visual art work explores the complexities of safe spaces in Queer and Black culture through mixed medium paintings and installations. Luster is a Vox Populi member and has been awarded the Mural Arts 2022 Black Artists Fellowship and the 2021 Center for Emerging Artists fellowship. This project\, a collaborative effort between Canal Projects and the 14th Gwangju Biennale\, involves the recreation of a lithium battery factory as a site-specific installation. Through production\, exhibition\, research and interpretation of this work they foster artistic practices that challenge and reflect the current moment. \n\n\n\nCandice Lin has gained recognition for her innovative use of diverse materials: from tea and cactus tinctures to fungi and deceased bats—accentuating their unique characteristics\, such as scents and flavors. Lin repurposes presentation techniques commonly linked with anthropology and natural history\, investigating their colonial narratives. SUMMARY:Artist-Led Tour of Elizabeth Turk's "Written in Stone" at Hirschl & Adler
DESCRIPTION:As our culture shifts\, artists are the witnesses\, reflecting back to us how our world is changing; memorializing the endangered\, and mourning the lost. Artist Elizabeth Turk speaks through one of our most permanent media\, marble\, to immerse us in a conversation about the fragility of handwritten language. Turk herself will guide the ArtTable group on a tour of Written in Stone\, with Hirschl & Adler Managing Director\, Elizabeth Feld. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nElegant and understated\, the beauty of calligraphic scripts has resonated across cultures and time. Elizabeth Turk: Written in Stone\, a group of twenty-three hand-carved marble sculptures made over the past decade\, marks the change caused by technological communication – the ubiquitous keyboard and AI – and seeks to question the transformation of everyday handwriting. What happens when the curved lines of a scripted passage no longer hold meaning\, or even exist? Or when the generations of tomorrow merely glance at a handwritten letter\, fail to understand it\, cannot decipher it\, and simply move on\, losing the nuances to history? Through this new body of work\, Elizabeth Turk conveys this fundamental shift with unmatched grace and technical dexterity.  There is an obvious paradox in a memorial of something as ephemeral and humancentric as script created with a solid\, seemingly permanent rock gilded with a mineral\, gold leaf. Long after the changes of this moment take place\, these sculptures will remind us of the strength\, endurance\, and lasting importance of what we have left behind. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $15\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $25\n\n\n\nPublic – $30\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.Artist Talks are presented with support from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. \n\n\n\n• • •\n\n\n\nFeatured Image: Elizabeth Turk (b. 1961) Passage 8\, 2016-2023 Marble and gold leaf\, 8 3/8 x 23 x 2 1/2 in. © Eric Stoner\, Courtesy of Hirschl & Adler Modern and the Artist.Photo Below: © Eric Stoner\, Courtesy of Hirschl & Adler Modern and the Artist. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\n\nBorn in Pasadena and raised in Orange County\, Elizabeth Turk earned her M.F.A. at the Rinehart School of Sculpture\, Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. A recipient of awards including a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2010)\, a Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Fellowship (2010)\, and a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (2011)\, Turk is internationally recognized for transforming her signature medium of marble into strikingly intricate objects that defy convention and challenge our preconceptions of what marble can do. Through the use of electric grinders\, dental tools\, and files\, Turk pushes her medium to its limit\, creating in each sculpture a provocative tension between the intrinsic strength of the stone and its inherent fragility\, while speaking to larger conceptual and spiritual concerns of time\, matter\, and space. \n\n\n\nDuring the twenty-two years that Turk has been represented by Hirschl & Adler Modern\, the gallery has mounted five solo exhibitions of her work\, each accompanied by publications; as well as a solo Art Kabinett at Art Basel Miami Beach (2012)\, a solo presentation at Masterpiece London (2014)\, and a solo presentation at the ADAA Art Show in 2017. \n\n\n\nTurk’s work resides in numerous prestigious private and public collections\, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, CA; the Jewish Museum\, New York\, NY; American University\, Washington\, D.C. (formerly\, the Corcoran Gallery of Art) and the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Washington\, D.C.; the Weatherspoon Gallery\, University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, NC; The Mint Museum\, Charlotte\, NC; the Catalina Museum for Art & History\, CA; and the Dixon Gallery & Gardens\, Memphis\, TN. Institutional monographic exhibitions include Tipping Point: Echoes of Extinction\, Woodson Art Museum\, Wausau\, WI (2022); Double Take\, with Mel Chin\, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park (2022)\, Elizabeth Turk: Heaven\, Earth\, Home\, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center\, VT (2018-19); Elizabeth Turk: Sentient Forms\, Laguna Art Museum\, CA (2015); Elizabeth Turk: Wings\, The Dayton Art Institute\, OH (2013); and Elizabeth Turk\, The Collars: Tracings of Thought\, Mint Museum of Art\, Charlotte\, NC (2004). Turk lives and works in Santa Ana\, CA\, and New York\, NY\, and is the cofounder of ET Projects\, a Foundation that infuses civic spaces with interdisciplinary communal art. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElizabeth Feld is the Managing Director and Director\, Furniture & Decorative Arts at Hirshl & Adler. She curated the gallery’s 50-anniversary exhibition\, Of the Newest Fashion: Masterpieces of American Neo-Classical Decorative Arts (2001–02). In 2006\, she co- curated Elizabeth Turk: The Collars and In Pointed Style: The Gothic Revival in America\, 1800–1860\, both accompanied by extensive catalogues; and in 2007\, For Work & For Play: A Selection of American Neo-Classical Furniture. More recent exhibitions include: Elizabeth Turk: Recent Sculpture (2008); The World of Duncan Phyfe: The Arts of New York\, 1800–1847 (2012)\, a celebration of the gallery’s 60th anniversary; Elizabeth Turk Cages (2012); Alexander Creswell: Fire & Light (2012); Very Rich & Handsome: American Neo-Classical Decorative Arts (2014–15); Elizabeth Turk: Tensions (2016); Augmenting the Canon: Recent Acquisitions of American Neo-Classical Decorative Arts (2018); and Elizabeth Turk: Tipping Point: Echoes of Extinction (2019).Elizabeth is a regular lecturer on American Decorative Arts and the antiques and art market. SUMMARY:Curator-Led Tour of "El Dorado: Myths of Gold" at the Americas Society
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a curator-led tour of Pt I: El Dorado: Myths of Gold\, exploring the legend of El Dorado as a foundational myth of the Americas. Artists in the show include Olga de Amaral\, Denilson Baniwa\, Bruno Baptistelli\, Andrés Bedoya\, Wendy Cabrera Rubio\, Leda Catunda\, Chiriquí artist\, Coclé artists\, william cordova\, Juan Covelli\, Covens & Mortier\, Harmonia Rosales\, Tiago Sant’Ana\, Julia Santos Solomon\, Moara Tupinambá\, Laura Vinci\, and Alberta Whittle. \n\n\n\nDuring the colonization of the Americas\, colonial fantasies of an Indigenous kingdom replete with gold and precious stones quickly permeated the European imagination\, galvanizing the invasion of the continent and serving as a justification for genocide as well as the destruction of ancestral territories and the environment. As we come to terms with the long-term sociopolitical and environmental effects of this dynamic\, there is a pressing need to reevaluate its influence on our identification as human beings and members of a globalized society. By placing historical and contemporary artworks together\, the exhibition facilitates dialogues between past and present to investigate how the myth has shaped the value of gold\, as well as that of territories\, peoples\, religious beliefs\, and nature.  \n\n\n\nThank you to Julia P Herzberg\, PhD for coordinating this program. Please see AS/COA website for exhibition funding acknowledgments. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $10\n\n\n\nArtTable Member Guests – $20\n\n\n\nPublic – $25\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNot a member? This will be an opportunity for both artists and collectors to consider the evolving dynamics of artist representation and glean valuable insight into the multi-faceted role of an art advisor/gallerist who has worked to build meaningful collections and support artists throughout her career. \n\n\n\nFor the health and safety of all guests\, please have an up to date COVID vaccine or wear a mask. Join today! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to ArtTable’s DC Chapter for organizing this program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCheryl Numark’s career in art took hold during her tenure as owner and curator for Numark Gallery (1995 – 2007)\, the premier gallery in Washington DC for many years. During this period Numark represented and exhibited dozens of artists that would find great success\, including Michal Rovner\, Tony Feher\, Peter Halley\, Tara Donovan\, Sharon Louden\, Terri Friedman\, Zwelethu Mthethwa\, Dan Steinhilber and many others. Shortly after closing her gallery\, Numark launched CNAA art advisory to work more closely with her clients to help them build meaningful collections. Throughout this time\, Cheryl maintained close contact with many of the artists she had once exhibited\, facilitating exciting commissions and acquisitions (most recently a painting by Sharon Louden at the National Gallery of Art\, 2023) and hosting curated exhibitions on Artsy / within her home of work by artists Sharon Louden\, Marylyn Dintenfass and Terri Friedman (forthcoming shows include Jorge Yazpik\, October 2023 and Diana Cooper\, Spring 2024). In addition to placing and exhibiting work at both fairs and her home\, Cheryl has exhibited work by artists at Art Miami\, 2022\, and located public and private commissions for artists\, for both residential and commercial uses. \n\n\n\nCheryl currently serves on the collector’s council at the Hirshhorn Museum and is a member of The Tower Project at the National Gallery of Art. For over a decade Numark was on the Board of Directors for Cultural DC\, supporting its mission to ‘Make Space for Art’ in the DC area.

SUMMARY:Curator-Led Tour of Marie Laurencin with Cindy Kang
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable Members for an intimate look at the fall exhibition Marie Laurencin: Sapphic Paris\, the first major US exhibition dedicated to French artist Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) in over 30 years. Laurencin’s highly original painting style defied categorization\, as she moved seamlessly between the male-dominated avant-garde\, literary and artistic circles\, and the realms of fashion\, ballet\, and decorative arts. The exhibition is co-curated by Simonetta Fraquelli and Cindy Kang. Presenting more than 50 works\, from self-portraits to collaborative decorative projects; from early cubist paintings to her signature work—feminine and discreetly queer\, this exhibition examines how Laurencin’s visualization of a “Sapphic modernity” subtly but radically challenges existing narrative of modern European art. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $10\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $15\n\n\n\nPublic – $20\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? Prior to joining Barnes in 2014\, Dr. Kang’s curatorial experience includes work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Frick Collection; and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Dr. Kang earned her BA in art history and French from Wellesley College and her MA and PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts\, NYU. In addition to contributing to a number of significant publications\, she has received several fellowships\, including a Predoctoral Fellowship from the Getty Research Institute (2012–2013); the Theodore Rousseau Fellowship from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2011–2012); and the Harriet A. Shaw Fellowship from Wellesley College (2011–2012). Dr. Kang served as the organizing curator of the Barnes’s Marie Cuttoli: The Modern Thread from Miró to Man-Ray (2020)\, managing curator for Water\, Wind\, Breath: Southwest Native Art in Community (2022); Renoir: Father and Son (2018) and Berthe Morisot: Woman Impressionist (2018).

Marta Minujín Archive. © Marta Minujín\, courtesy of Henrique Faria\, New York andHerlitzka & Co.\, Buenos Aires\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable for an intimiate look at the first survey exhibition in the United States of Marta Minujín\, a defining force of Latin American art whose trajectory intersected with the major artistic developments of the postwar period while reflecting a singular spirit and vision infused by her sharp intellect\, irreverent humor\, and performative presence. Hosted by The Jewish Museum\, this tour will be led by Associate Curator\, Rebecca Shaykin. \n\n\n\nThis extensive exhibition includes nearly 100 works organized to reflect Minujín’s bold experimentation over six decades. The exhibition charts Minujín’s influential career in Buenos Aires as well as time spent in Paris\, New York\, and Washington\, DC\, through a range of pioneering\, mattress-based soft sculptures; fluorescent large-scale paintings; psychedelic drawings and performances; and vintage film footage. The artist’s ephemeral works – happenings\, participatory installations\, and monumental public art – are presented through rarely-seen photographs\, video\, and other documentation. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $10\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $20\n\n\n\nPublic – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:New York | Kick off the New Year Party

Solo exhibitions highlight the rich way in which artists respond to the materials\, forces\, and questions of the day. Focused group exhibitions explore significant movements\, themes\, and ideas that continue to influence and define our culture. The historic works handled by the gallery over the past thirty years are broad-ranging and can often be defined by their rarity and significance.  \n\n\n\nIn 2006\, Peter Freeman partnered with Galerie Nelson to establish what would eventually become Peter Freeman\, Inc.\, Paris in 2013. The gallery\, both in New York and in Paris\, has always presented historically significant works in conversation with newer work by living artists. For this reason\, much of our business has been with museums. \n\n\n\nPeter Freeman also publishes scholarly books\, including a catalogue raisonné Robert Mangold: Early Works\, with text by Robert Storr; the first US catalogue on the works of Charlotte Posenenske; several catalogues on Medardo Rosso; James Ensor: Paintings\, with text by Xavier Tricot; the first monograph of Catherine Murphy\, with text by John Yau and Svetlana Alpers; a facsimile edition of Mangelos’s Pythagoras with an essay by Branka Stipančić; and the artist book Tide\, a collaboration with Silvia Bächli and the writer Jamaica Kincaid.

SUMMARY:Glendale\, CA | Curatorial Walkthrough of If Memory Serves: Photography\, Recollections and Vision at the Brand Library & Art Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Rotem Rozental\, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Los Angeles Center of Photography\, for a walkthrough of the exhibition If Memory Serves: Photography\, Recollections and Vision. Our hard drives may fail. Our phones might break. We may forget an image that was once cemented in our minds. Our relationships with images and devices that hold our memories define how we understand our position in the world. If Memory Serves emerges from the moments those devices fail us\, our recollections betray us and our pictures refuse to bring back the people they once captured. This exhibition emerges from the intersection of our haunting pasts\, possible futures\, and our connections to photographic images\, technologies and the systems that ask to speak for our photographs. The exhibition begins with and honors Aline Smithson\, a mentor\, photographer and educator\, whose work with artists is redefining photographic practice. If Memory Serves celebrates her immense contribution to photography and further comments upon the reach of her stewardship and pedagogy. The participating artists have all been studying with and from her. Seen together\, their works offer profound insight into our co-existence with photography\, suggesting meeting points between personal experiences and broader societal issues and conflicts – from privacy to grief\, from representation to immigration.Artists: Aurora Wilder Collective (Jennifer Pritchard in collaboration with Patrick Corrigan and DALL-E)\, Elizabeth Bailey\, Dena Elisabeth Eber\, Sarah Hadley\, Diane Hemingway\, Rohina Hoffman\, Susan Lapides\, Annette LeMay Burke\, Annie Omens\, Lori Ordover\, Safi Alia Shabaik\, Aline Smithson\, Rosalie Rosenthal \n\n\n\n\nIf Memory Serves: Photography\, Recollections and Vision | Honoring Aline Smithson\n\n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – Free\n\n\n\nMember Guests – $5\n\n\n\nPublic – $10\n\n\n\n\nNot a member?
