SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Guided Tour of “Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined” at the New Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable at The New Museum for a tour of a major solo exhibition of the work of Wangechi Mutu (b. 1972\, Nairobi)\, bringing together over one-hundred works from across her twenty-five-year career. The tour will be led by New Museum teaching artist\, Yasmeen Abdalla.ArtTable had the chance to interview Mutu in 2014 in partnership with artnet. This tour brings us full circle to see the significant development and accomplishment in her career since that time.Representing the full breadth of Mutu’s practice\, the presentation will encompass painting\, collage\, drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and performance. Mutu first gained acclaim for her collage-based practice exploring camouflage\, transformation\, and mutation. She extends these strategies to her work across various media\, developing hybrid\, fantastical forms that fuse mythical and folkloric narratives with layered sociohistorical references. “Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined” will trace connections between recent developments in the artist’s sculptural practice and her decades-long exploration of the legacies of colonialism\, globalization\, and African and diasporic cultural traditions. She is interested in ephemera; aftermaths; and the stories told\, and secrets kept by imprints and objects that speak to our contemporary culture. She holds an MFA in Fine Arts with distinction from Pratt Institute\, and Bachelor’s degrees from University of Massachusetts\, Boston in Studio Art with honors\, and in Anthropology (emphasis in Historical & Collaborative Archaeology\, including field schools with Hassanamesit Woods and the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation); with a Minor in Women’s\, Gender & Sexuality Studies. \n\n\n\n\nShe has been a visiting artist and speaker at institutions including Columbia University Teaching College; El Barrio Art Space\, Fairleigh Dickinson University; Parsons School for Design; Pratt Institute; Sarah Lawrence College; and University of Massachusetts. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Art in Odd Places; the Boiler; Bronx Art Space; Bullet Space; Chashama; Cornell University; Ed Varie; Elizabeth Foundation; La Bodega; Open Source; Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space; Nars Foundation; PS122 Gallery; and Spring Break Art Show.

She has a Master’s Degree in Chinese Art History and a Certificate in Curatorial Studies from the Institute of Fine Arts\, NYU. In her position at the Kimbell\, she is responsible for the areas of Chinese\, Japanese\, Indian\, Himalayan\, Southeast Asian\, African and the Art of the Ancient Americas – which represent half of holdings of the permanent collection. \n\n\n\n\nDuring her tenure at the Kimbell\, she has curated major exhibitions of Buddhist sculpture\, Chinese antiquities and Imperial porcelain\, Japanese ukiyo-e painting and Samurai armor\, Egyptian antiquities\, Tibetan Esoteric Buddhist painting\, Mughal painting\, African and Oceanic sculpture\, Maya and Wari art\, a retrospective on Louis Kahn\, the architect of the original Kimbell building\, and the couturier Cristobal Balenciaga. More recently\, she organized: Queen Nefertari’s Egypt; Buddha\, Shiva\, Lotus\, Dragon; and The Language of Beauty in African Art; and is currently preparing for a spring 2023 exhibition Lives of Gods: Divinity in Maya Art (co-organized with the MET). In 2012 she curated the Kimbell’s 40th Anniversary exhibition in the iconic Louis Kahn building and in 2013 she supervised the re-installation of her collections in the Renzo Piano Pavilion. She has made nearly thirty acquisitions covering the range of all the fields she curates. In addition to these duties\, Jennifer contributes to publications\, conducts docent training\, lectures frequently to share her expertise\, and has led patron tours to China\, Japan\, India\, Cambodia\, Vietnam\, Turkey\, Cuba\, Peru\, New Zealand\, Australia\, Greece\, and Croatia. Jennifer carried out a six-year term (2015 – 2020) as a Commissioner on the Fort Worth Public Art Commission\, serving as Vice-Chair and Chair of the Commission during her tenure. She has been a member of AAMC (Association of Art Museum Curators) since 2001 and has served as Membership Committee Co-Chair\, Advocacy Task Force co-Chair\, Prize Committee member\, and in 2020 participated in the Mentorship Program as a mentor to a junior curatorial colleague. DESCRIPTION:See below to register for either the 4:00 PM or the 5:00 PM tour group. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Laura Phipps\, Assistant Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, with Caitlin Chaisson\, Curatorial Project Assistant\, for a tour of the first New York retrospective of groundbreaking artist\, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (b. 1940\, citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation). Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map brings together nearly five decades of Smith’s drawings\, prints\, paintings\, and sculptures in the largest and most comprehensive showing of her career to date. \n\n\n\nSmith’s work engages with contemporary modes of making\, from her idiosyncratic adoption of abstraction to her reflections on American Pop art and neo-expressionism. These artistic traditions are incorporated and reimagined with concepts rooted in Smith’s own cultural practice\, reflecting her belief that her “life’s work involves examining contemporary life in America and interpreting it through Native ideology.” Employing satire and humor\, Smith’s art tells stories that flip commonly held conceptions of historical narratives and illuminate absurdities in the formation of dominant culture. Smith’s approach importantly blurs categories and questions why certain visual languages attain recognition\, historical privilege\, and value.  Across decades and mediums\, Smith has deployed and reappropriated ideas of mapping\, history\, and environmentalism while incorporating personal and collective memories. She has been at the Whitney since the summer of 2009\, and her recent projects include Virginia Overton: Sculpture Gardens\, Open Plan: Andrea Fraser and a group show of emerging artists Flatlands. She has also co-curated a project with Michele Abeles and the permanent collection exhibition Test Pattern. Laura has assisted with numerous museum exhibitions including 2010\, the Whitney Biennial\, Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection\, Glenn Ligon: AMERICA\, Singular Visions\, Wade Guyton OS\, Sinister Pop\, and Jeff Koons: A Retrospective. \n\n\n\n\nShe has served on the grant selection committee of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation\, as a visiting critic for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace and Smackmellon Studio Program\, and as a guest curator at the Kentler Drawing Center\, Brooklyn. Prior to the Whitney\, Phipps worked in the curatorial department and director’s office of the Modern Art Museum\, Fort Worth. She received her MA\, Art History at Hunter College\, CUNY and BFA\, Studio Art and BS\, Psychology from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth\, Texas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Chaisson is curator and critic based in New York\, and holds an MA in Curatorial Studies from Bard College. She currently works at the Whitney Museum of American Art. \n\n\n\nFrom 2016–2019\, she served as the Director and Curator of Far Afield\, an initiative that supports regionally-connected artistic and curatorial practices. She has also held positions and contracts at The Drawing Center (New York City)\, e-flux (New York City)\, Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Vancouver)\, AKA Artist-Run Centre (Saskatoon)\, and the Anvil Centre (New Westminster). SUMMARY:New York\, NY | Tour of Wendy Red Star's "Our Side" at Sargent's Daughters
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Sargent’s Daughters gallery for a tour of Our Side—the third solo exhibition of Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooke (Crow)\, b.1981\, Billings\, MT) at the gallery. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Spring 2023 release of Red Star’s monograph Bíilukaa\, published by Radius Books and featuring interviews with the artist\, members of her extended family\, and scholars. The book’s title\, Bíilukaa\, is in reference to what the Apsáalooke (Crow) call themselves: Our Side. \n\n\n\nOur Side builds upon Red Star’s research into historical photographs of Apsáalooke individuals and objects\, with the artist drawing on both her personal collection and works held in museums and archives across the country. Red Star notes: “Since the time I left the Crow reservation I have encountered my tribe’s material culture in every city I have exhibited or occupied. It is incredible that so much of my community’s history and material culture is kept in the vaults of these institutions hundreds of miles away from their source.”  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition includes two distinct bodies of work; the first are photographic prints originally produced for Bíilukaa\, reimagined as a dynamic installation in the gallery. Photo by Yasunori Matsui \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nBorn in Lahore\, Pakistan\, in 1969\, Shahzia Sikander took up the traditional practice of miniature painting during Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq’s military regime\, at a time when the medium was deeply unpopular among young artists. Sikander earned a B.F.A. in 1991 from the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore\, where she received rigorous training from master miniaturist Bashir Ahmad. She became the first woman to teach in the Miniature Painting Department at NCA\, alongside Ahmad\, and was the first artist from the department to challenge the medium’s technical and aesthetic framework. Sikander’s breakthrough work\, The Scroll\, 1989–90\, received national critical acclaim in Pakistan\, winning the prestigious Shakir Ali Award\, the NCA’s highest merit award\, and the Haji Sharif award for excellence in miniature painting\, subsequently launching the medium into the forefront of NCA’s program\, which brought international recognition to this medium within contemporary art practices. The artist moved to the United States to pursue an M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 1995; from 1995 to 1997\, she participated in the CORE Program of the Glassell School of Art at The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Curator\n\n\n\n\nBrooke Kamin Rapaport is deputy director and Martin Friedman chief curator at New York’s Madison Square Park Conservancy\, which she joined in 2013. She was commissioner and curator of the 2019 United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale with the exhibition Martin Puryear: Liberty/Liberta. A major catalogue published by Gregory R. Miller accompanied the Venice exhibition. At Madison Square Park Conservancy\, she is responsible for the outdoor public sculpture program of commissioned work by contemporary artists including Diana AI-Hadid\, Tony Cragg\, Abigail DeVille\, Leonardo Drew\, Teresita Fernandez\, Maya Lin\, Josiah McElheny\, Martin Puryear\, Erwin Redl\, Arlene Shechet\, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. She is the founder of Public Art Consortium\, a national initiative of museum\, public art\, and sculpture park colleagues launched in 2017. Rapaport was a curator of contemporary art at the Brooklyn Museum and a guest curator at The Jewish Museum. She sits on the boards of three artist-endowed foundations and the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College.

This exhibition is presented at Atlanta Contemporary in partnership with the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.For the 2023 iteration of the ongoing Women to Watch series\, the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) invited guest curators Sierra King and Melissa Messina to select five woman-identifying Georgia-connected artists whose work responds to the question: When women artists envision a different world\, how does that look? \n\n\n\nWith over 60 artists initially considered\, and 16 studio visits conducted\, these 5 artists represent a diverse range of artistic excellence\, age\, backgrounds\, and geographic locations. Their practices push the boundaries of their chosen media and the exhibition’s thematic inquiry. \n\n\n\nMELISSA MESSINA is a nationally recognized arts professional who has developed thought-provoking exhibitions\, dynamic site-responsive projects\, and engaging educational public programming both independently and in leadership positions at museums and non-profit arts organizations. \n\n\n\nSIERRA KING is an Archivist and Curator. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Guggenheim as curator Andrea Zambrano walks us through a retrospective of one of the great pioneering Venezuelan artists\, Gego—or Gertrud Goldschmidt (b. 1912\, Hamburg; d. 1994\, Caracas). Gego’s two-and-three dimensional works across many media explored the relationship between line\, space\, and volume. Her practice is grounded in the intersections of geometric abstraction\, Kinetic art\, Minimalism\, and Post-Minimalism. Trained as an architect (b. 1912 Hamburg; d. 1994 Caracas)\, known for her organic forms\, linear structures\, and spatial investigations\, this exhibition will establish her legacy in the Americas. \n\n\n\nAndrea Zambrano is an emerging curator and art historian whose primary research interests are in modern and contemporary Latin American art. In 2021 she joined the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, serving as the curatorial assistant on Alex Katz: Gathering (2021). Currently\, Andrea is on the curatorial team of Gego: Measuring Infinity\, working alongside exhibition curators Geaninne Gutiérrez-Guimarães and Pablo Leon de la Barra. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning conversation and gallery tour with Mary Early\, Director of HEMPHILL Artworks\, featuring the exhibition: Prints & Works on Paper.Prints and Works on Paper (March 18 – May 6\, 2023)The 19 artists presented in Prints & Works on Paper worked from the mid-1930s through 2014. While the work spans almost a century\, it was made within the shared social and political context of the Black experience in America. These artists did not perceive a line where activism ended and art began. Believing that pictures could make a difference\, they were invested in advocating for justice\, empowerment\, and community through education; the intentionality of creating editioned prints in a workshop setting reflects this dedication. Printmaking facilitated a wider distribution of their messages\, allowing artists to be deliberate about connection and reaching a larger audience. Imagery portraying a rich social life offered viewers positive self-representation\, verity\, and aspiration for the future. The private collection of 38 works passionately assembled over a 30-year period\, is honest in content and impressive in technique\, both captivating the audience and effectively conveying the artworks’ significance. She studied visual art\, film\, and video at Bennington College\, and her work has been exhibited at the United States Botanic Garden\, Washington Project for the Arts\, the Corcoran Gallery of Art\, Second Street Gallery (Charlottesville\, VA)\, Hemphill Fine Arts (Washington DC\,) the Austrian Cultural Forum (Washington DC)\, Galerie Im Ersten (Vienna\, Austria)\, Kloster Schloss Salem (Salem\, Germany)\, Kunstlerbund Tubingen (Tubingen\, Germany)\, the American University Museum (Washington DC)\, and the Sun Valley Museum of Art (Ketchum\, ID). Early’s work is included in the collections of the US Department of State/Embassy of Panama and Embassy of Jordan\, the District of Columbia Art Bank\, the American University Museum (Corcoran Collection). She is a recipient of the Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on Arts & Humanities\, Washington DC (2022\, 2020\, 2019\, 2018\, 2017\, 2016\, 2015\, 2014\, 2011\, 2009\, 2007). \n\n\n\nEarly is the director of HEMPHILL Artworks\, Washington\, DC\, and serves on the boards of Hamiltonian Artists and Washington Sculptors Group. She handles the work of contemporary artists and artist estates\, including William Christenberry (Estate)\, Colby Caldwell\, Jacob Kainen (Estate)\, Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi\, Mingering Mike\, Robin Rose\, Renée Stout\, Alma Woodsey Thomas\, Julie Wolfe\, Workingman Collective. She specializes in the artists of the Washington Color School. Early works with living artists and artists’ heirs on long-range planning\, and with private and institutional collectors to build and manage significant collections. She has a particular interest in public art and community engagement\, the materials and processes of contemporary sculpture\, and professional development for emerging and under-represented artists. \n\n\n\nABOUT HEMPHILL \n\n\n\nHEMPHILL Artworks opened in Washington DC in September\, 1993. The exhibition schedule features contemporary art ranging in media from emerging to mid-career and established artists. In addition to these shows\, the gallery mounts exhibitions of historically-significant artwork and socially relevant subjects. The diversity of this schedule is designed to showcase important talent and provide artwork that appeals to a broad range of interests. \n\n\n\nFrom its beginnings\, HEMPHILL has advised corporate and private collectors. This initial client base was built upon contacts and experiences gained in academia\, with private galleries\, and with architectural and design firms. HEMPHILL’s consulting and advisory work has expanded to include companies and individuals worldwide. HEMPHILL offers collectors the chance to experience a broad range of aesthetic experiences both through the gallery exhibition program and through private viewing opportunities. It also provides an opportunity to be directly involved in the artists’ community as well as the creative process. \n\n\n\nSpecial events include the ongoing ART TALKS series\, artist book signings\, and charitable vents for area nonprofits. Begun in 1998\, the ART TALKS series includes educational lectures on topics such as collecting for beginners\, artist talks\, and panel discussions on issues in contemporary art. In 2020\, HEMPHILL inaugurated a new gallery space in Washington’s historic Mount Vernon Square neighborhood. Featuring an open gallery floor plan and glass partitions that invite guests into the office area\, the design allows for increased interaction and conversation. As we enter 2023\, the third year in this new space and the third year of a global pandemic\, we continue to welcome first-time visitors.

Her innovative approaches to cultivating support for artists have enriched our national cultural landscape\, and her leadership has changed the lives of hundreds of artists across the country.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to her leadership roles\, Deana is a strategic advisor to cultural foundations and philanthropic initiatives including the Ruth Foundation for the Arts and Chanel Next Prize. She also lectures extensively\, consults on various art initiatives\, contributes to cultural publications\, and has taught at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and Towson University. Read her bio here. \n\n\n\nAbout Marcela Guerrero\n\n\n\nGuerrero is the DeMartini Family Curator at The Whitney Museum of American Art. She has worked at the Whitney for nearly six years and was the Museum’s first curator to specialize in Latinx art. She currently serves as the Jennifer Rubio Associate Curator and has curated landmark exhibitions including no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria. That show\, on view at the Museum through April 23\, explores the impact of the devastating storm on contemporary Puerto Rican art. This powerful and renowned exhibition is the first survey of Puerto Rican art at a major U.S. art museum in fifty years. Guerrero was also part of the curatorial team that organized Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art\, 1925–1945 at the Whitney in 2020\, and curated Pacha\, Llaqta\, Wasichay: Indigenous Space\, Modern Architecture\, a 2018 exhibition that featured the work of seven emerging Latinx artists. This summer\, Guerrero will co-curate an exhibition of artist Ilana Savdie’s latest work\, including paintings and drawings\, as well as new works produced for the Whitney. Guerrero is responsible for many major acquisitions of work by prominent Latinx artists to the Whitney’s collection\, including Laura Aguilar\, Patrick Martinez\, and Freddy Rodriguez. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Chryssa & New York at Dia Chelsea led by exhibition curator Megan Holly Witko. Co-organized by Dia Art Foundation and the Menil Collection\, Chryssa & New York is the first comprehensive survey of works by Greek-born artist Chryssa (1933–2013) to take place in North America since 1982. A leading figure of the New York art world in the 1950s and ’60s\, Chryssa developed an innovative approach to activating sculptural surfaces through subtle manipulations of light and shadow. Pathbreaking in its use of signage\, text\, and neon\, her vastly under-recognized body of work bridges Pop\, Conceptual\, and Minimalist ideas of art making. Under her leadership the Museum has developed Jazz at the Kreeger\, a series that spotlights area musicians\, created The Collaborative\, an exhibition program that supports visual and performing artists working in Washington DC\, and expanded innovative and inclusive family program offerings. In addition to presenting group exhibitions in 2020 and 2021\, the Museum presented two exhibitions in 2022 for legendary printmaker\, Lou Stovall\, illustrating and acknowledging Stovall’s profound and far-reaching influence on the Washington arts community and city. Chason holds an Ed.M. from Harvard University and has lived in Washington\, DC since 1980. \n  \n\n\n\nK. Lorraine Graham writes poems and texts that occasionally manifest as drawings\, games and performances. She is the author of The Rest is Censored (Bloof Books)\, Terminal Humming (Edge Books) and numerous zines\, including Semiotic Squares (Primary Writing)\, a book of drawings\, and My Little Neoliberal Pony (Insert Blanc Press). Graham earned an M.F.A. from the University of California\, San Diego is an artist at STABLE Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, where she also lives. \n \n \n \n\nGail Shaw-Clemons\, born in Washington\, DC\, received her Masters’ Degree in printmaking from the University of Maryland. She is a printmaker\, mixed media\, and art activist. She has exhibited extensively\, with many works included in public and private collections in the USA\, Brazil\, Norway\, Sweden\, China and the Republic of Ireland. Her work is also in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Library of Congress\, and the Banneker-Douglass Museum. Shaw-Clemons has a studio at Stable Art and prints at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Studio in New York as well as the Pyramid Printmaking Studio in Hyattsville MD. Recently retired as an art instructor from the United Nations International School in New York\, She is currently an adjunct professor at Bowie State University in Maryland. \n  \n\n\n\nKatherine Tzu-Lan Mann creates large scale paintings and paper installations that examine mythology\, identity\, and landscape. She is the recipient of the Sustainable Arts Foundation grant\, a Fulbright grant\, the AIR Gallery and Lower East Side Printshop Keyholder Fellowships\, and the Mayor’s Award and Hamiltonian Fellowship in Washington\, DC. Before attending this prestigious school she received her Certificate of Professional Qualification in Restoration in the Tuscany Region\, Italy. She fell in love with restoration during her study at the Academy of Fine Arts\, Ravenna\, Italy after obtaining the Diploma of Art by the Liceo Artistico\, Ravenna\, Italy. \nPrior to moving to Florida\, she worked for 20 years in Italy performing conservation treatment for the minister of cultural heritage\, as well as public and private institutions that included museums\, churches and private collections. Her clientele included Civic Museum of Ancient Art\, General Director of Fine-Arts\, Italian Institute of Culture\, Archbishop’s Curia\, public institutions\, city councils\, as well as for many private collectors and art and antique art dealers. \nBarbara taught classes at the graduate level in art for the Ministry of Education. She also taught for the Association Classe Europenne du Patrimoine C.E.P.I.A. (Centre d’ études Sur le Patrimoine l’Italianité et les Arts) and for an exchange between the Italian region of Emilia Romagna and the French region Les Pays de la Loire\, Assessorato of Culture in cooperation with the Civic Art Gallery of Ferrara\, Assessorato alla Cultura of Ferrara in collaboration with the General Director of Artistic and Historical Patrimonies of Bologna and the Inspector of Environmental and Architectural Patrimonies of Ravenna. \nSince moving to West Palm Beach in 2010 she works with art lovers\, national and international galleries\, private and corporate collectors\, art advisors\, fine art storage facilities\, art dealers and auction houses\, museums\, insurance companies\, art appraisers\, interior design firms. Barbara has restored a large number of works by well-known painters and sculptors. \nIn the span of her 30-year career\, she has performed treatments on paintings by prestigious artists such as Rembrandt (1606-1669)\, Claude Monet (1840- 1926)\, Paolo Cagliari\, called “il Veronese” (1528-1588)\, Joan Miro’ (1893-1983)\, Salvador Dali’ (1904-1989)\, Kenneth Noland (1924-2010)\, Rene’ Magritte (1898-1967)\, and many others. \nBarbara Stella is an AIC Professional Associate (American Institute for Conservation). She uses methodologies approved by the AIC and the (European) Institution of Preservation of Artistic and Historical Works\, whose guidelines and ethics she stringently follows. \nMany of her restoration works were published in highly respected European art and restoration publications (see Press Articles and Publications)\, as well as presented in TV programs in Ferrara Italy and in Belgium (TV De Wereld BVBA\, trasmission Go2). Barbara’s passion for art conservation is reflected by her continuous development and training in her industry. She continuously stays up-to-date with new and innovative techniques that enable her to treat and preserve even the most challenging artworks. \nBarbara is fully qualified to use Modular Cleaning with aqueous solutions and is one of the few Art Conservators in the US trained to use Nanotechnology in art conservation\, for the treatment of very sensitive artworks. Her scholarship focuses on Latinx and Latin American art and its institutional and market validation\, as well as on the recovery of histories suppressed by colonialism. Since her hiring in 2013 she has significantly increased the representation of Latinx historical figures and artists at the Portrait Gallery\, through approximately 200 acquisitions and by curating or co-curating exhibitions such as One Life: Dolores Huerta\, UnSeen: Our Past in a New Light\, Ken Gonzales-Day and Titus Kaphar\, and The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today. She is the director of the Portrait Gallery’s triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2022\, and co-curator of the resulting The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today with Leslie Ureña. \nUpcoming exhibitions also include 1898: US Imperial Visions and Revisions\, a show co-curated with Kate Clarke Lemay\, which will offer a critical examination of the events that turned the US into a world power with overseas territories. The Kinsey Collection has been featured in more than 30 exhibitions in over 30 states and is an unparalleled archive and celebration of the achievements and contributions of black Americans from before the formation of the United States to the present times. \n\n\n\nThe Kinseys have become known for their collection of art\, books\, artifacts\, and ephemeral objects that document the remarkable achievements and contributions of African Americans from 1595 to the present\, considered to be one of the largest of its kind. Since 2006\, The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection – Where Art and History Intersect”\, has been on national tour and seen by over 15 million visitors to date. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for private tour of Matrix: Prints by Women Artists\, 1960–1990 led by Laura Vookles\, Chief Curator of Collections at the Hudson River Museum and ArtTable member\, followed by a light reception. \n\n\n\nMatrix: Prints by Women Artists\, 1960–1990 explores a period of experimentation in printmaking among women artists\, who used the art form as a means of creative expression and also a way to enter the male-dominated art market. Artists such as Minna Citron\, Chryssa\, Helen Frankenthaler\, the Guerrilla Girls\, Louise Nevelson\, Faith Ringgold\, and Julia Santos Solomon experimented with the medium during these three decades and became a formidable matrix from which a new generation of printmakers would develop. People and the Railroad”; “Westchester: The American Suburb”; “Dutch New York: the Roots of Hudson Valley Culture”; “Paintbox Leaves: Autumnal Inspiration from Cole to Wyeth”; and “The Panoramic River: The Hudson and the Thames.” She also conceived\, curated and wrote the lead essay and catalogue for “Elihu Vedder: Journey on the Nile.” In the 28 years that she has worked at the Hudson River Museum\, she has focused much effort on Glenview\, the Museum’s 1877 Hudson River house for which she completed numerous furnishing\, conservation\, and interpretation projects. Georgia has gained experience at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, London\, and with an exhibition designer to catalogue and display prominent private collections including The Myers Collection at Eton College and the Portland Collection at Welbeck Abbey. She then managed The Redfern Gallery on London’s prestigious Cork Street. As Assistant Curator of the renowned\, private collection of decorative arts owned by The Goldsmiths’ Company in London\, Georgia was responsible for managing\, exhibiting and expanding a collection of more than 9\,000 objects. Georgia is a featured lecturer at Christie’s Education and speaks regularly on the subject of the role of the Collector today. \nAbout Liza Shapiro\nLiza’s interest for caring for works of art began while studying art restoration in Florence\, Italy. She earned a BA in Art Conservation from Camberwell College of Arts\, London\, and an MA in Museum Studies from University College London (UCL). Liza worked at several museums\, galleries and conservation studios\, including Tate Modern\, the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Redfern Gallery. At the oldest hat shop in the world\, Lock & Co. Hatters\, Liza preserved and catalogued more than 400 ledgers and historical material in order to curate a new\, permanent exhibition space. Liza returned home to California in 2015\, and has established a strong LA presence\, working with varied private collections and industry specialists. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable in Washington\, DC for February’s BreakfastTable program with Adriana Ospina\, Director of the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States. We will tour the museum and have coffee and a light breakfast. Adriana will discuss her work at the AMA\, including unique aspects of directing and curating at an institution focused on cultural diplomacy. \n\n\n\nAdriana Ospina is the Director of the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States\, as well as an ArtTable member. Since 2007\, she has held the position of Educational Program Manager and\, since 2014\, Curator of the Permanent Collection. She has curated numerous exhibitions; among them are Fusion: Tracing Asian Migration to the Americas; Femininity Beyond Archetypes: Photography by Natalia Arias; A Gaze through the CINTAS Fellowship Program; A Selection of Works from the CINTAS Foundation; Arts of the Americas; and No Ocean Between Us: Art of Asian Diasporas in Latin America & The Caribbean 1945-Present. She has also co-curated exhibitions including Visual Memory: Home + Place; and Dialog: Landscape and Abstraction | Freya Grand and AMA Permanent Collection. Ospina edited the book “Collection of the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States” (OAS\, 2017). She participated in the College Art Association Conference in 2013 and 2020. Ospina holds an MA in Art History from George Mason University. \n\n\nThe Art Museum of the Americas building\, completed in 1912\, was designed by Paul Cret and Albert Kelsey as the residence of the Directors General of the Pan American Union\, later the Secretaries General of the Organization of American States. In October of 1976\, the residence officially opened its doors to the public\, repurposed\, as the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America\, now the Art Museum of the Americas\, which shares the arts of OAS member states in this Spanish colonial style building\, a National Historical Landmark. \n \n \n\n\nThis program is free and open to ArtTable members only. DESCRIPTION:Data about pay and gender equity when it comes to arts professionals is woefully inaccessible and incomplete. Over the past several months\, in an effort to remedy some of these problems and contribute valuable knowledge to our community\, ArtTable has collected new data via a survey about the changing contours of the artistic labor market in order to better understand trends and advocate for arts professionals\, artists\, and arts workers of all types. Based on the feedback we have received so far\, and continue to receive\, we are pleased to present this discussion on gender\, compensation\, and inequality among arts professionals at the Ford Foundation in New York City. \n\n\n\nClick here to take the survey if you have not done so already! We also thank the Ford Foundation for hosting this discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Tania Aparicio\nDr. Tania Aparicio (she/her) is a full-time lecturer in the Arts Administration Program at Teachers College-Columbia University. Using ethnographic and archival methods\, her research has focused on the study of cultural production\, cultural organizations\, and cultural workers–with particular attention to the dynamics of inequality in art worlds. In particular\, she has conducted a comparative investigation of the effects of unionization in arts organizations and how it shapes racialized and gendered relations in the workplace. Her research has been supported by the Mellon Foundation\, Fulbright Program\, Institute for Critical Social Inquiry\, and Janey Program in Latin American Studies. At The New School she completed her doctoral degree thanks to a Dean’s fellowship and a dissertation award. \nAbout LaKeisha M.A. Caton\nPartner LaKeisha M.A. Caton is a member of Pryor Cashman’s Labor + Employment and Litigation Groups\, and combines her comprehensive litigation background with a focus on employment-related matters to bring results to clients across the globe. Having represented both management and executives in discrimination and harassment cases\, LaKeisha brings her extensive knowledge of the law as well as her familiarity with the strategies often adopted by the opposition to every engagement. She leverages her comprehensive experience with federal\, state\, and local discrimination law and her background in litigation and dispute resolution to achieve favorable outcomes on behalf of her clients. \nRecent representations include: \n\nA Fortune 25 multinational bank in various litigations involving allegations of harassment and discrimination;\nA large global airline in connection with advice concerning employee classifications;\nVarious award-winning restaurants in numerous wage and hour litigations; and\nA global technology and consultancy firm in disputes involving restrictive covenants.\n\nWhile a student at Harvard Law School\, LaKeisha was on the Board of the Harvard Journal on Racial and Ethnic Justice. She also interned with multiple children’s rights organizations during which she represented individual clients as well as prepared for large class actions. \nAbout Gillian Gualtieri\, PhD\nGillian is a sociologist of inequality\, art\, and work. In 2018\, she received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California\, Berkeley\, where she wrote a dissertation focused on understanding how gender and ethno-racial inequality shape the work experiences of cultural entrepreneurs\, especially chefs\, under the direction of two of the leading scholars in feminist theory and work. Alongside her dissertation research\, Gillian worked closely with several campus offices to conduct program evaluation research related to sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention education on campus. After completing her PhD\, she was a Dean’s Fellow at NYU\, where she continued her research focused on inequality and artistic labor and completed several consulting projects for the university focused on diversity\, equity\, and inclusion recruitment and retention efforts at the university. \nAfter two years at NYU\, Gillian moved to Vanderbilt University’s Curb Center for Art\, Enterprise\, and Public Policy\, where she collaborated on projects related to the study of inequality in artistic labor markets\, developing expertise in SNAAP (Strategic National Arts Alumni Project) data and receiving a National Endowment for the Arts grant to fund her collaborative research. Also at Vanderbilt\, she wrote the curriculum and helped lead the NEA-funded Racial Equity in Arts Leadership program\, an evidence-based diversity\, equity\, and inclusion leadership program co-sponsored by the Curb Center and MetroArts Nashville.
