Her recent projects include the exhibition and book Hung Liu: Portraits of Promised Lands (Yale University Press\, 2021) and The Obama Portraits (Princeton University Press\, 2020). In 2015\, Moss initiated IDENTIFY\, the NPG’s first performance art series featuring internally recognized artists\, including Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons\, James Luna\, and Jeffrey Gibson. Her upcoming exhibitions are One Life: Maya Lin (September 2022) and Kinship\, with curators Leslie Ureña\, Robyn Asleson\, and Taína Caragol (October 2022). \nAbout the exhibition\nHung Liu (1948–2021) was a contemporary Chinese-born American artist\, whose multilayered paintings established new frameworks for understanding portraiture in relation to time\, memory\, and history. Often sourcing her subjects from photographs\, Liu elevated overlooked individuals by amplifying the stories of those who have historically been invisible or unheard. Having lived through war\, political revolution\, exile\, and displacement\, she offered a complex picture of an Asian Pacific American experience. Her portraits speak powerfully to those seeking a better life\, in the United States and elsewhere. Hung Liu: Portraits of Promised Lands will be the first major exhibition of the artist’s work on the East Coast. This is also the first time that a museum will focus on Liu’s portraiture. \n\nImage: Hung Liu (American\, born China 1948\, died California\, 2021)\, Resident Alien\, 1988\, Oil on canvas; Collection of the San Jose Museum of Art; gift of the Lipman Family Foundation; Dorothy Moss and Hung Liu \nThank you to Shelley Langdale\, Curator and Head of Modern Prints and Drawings\, National Gallery of Art (and ArtTable DC Chapter programs co-chair) and Concetta Duncan\, Head of Communications\, National Portrait Gallery for organizing this program.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER - SoCal | Tour & Artist Talk with Nancy Buchanan & Barbara T. Smith
DESCRIPTION:11:30am PT\nPlease join us for an in-person tour of how we are in time and space: Nancy Buchanan\, Marcia Hafif\, Barbara T. Smith\, followed by a discussion with two of the exhibition artists – Nancy Buchanan and Barbara T. Smith. \nThis major group exhibition is the first to focus on the collaborations and empathic intersections between three remarkable artists in the form of drawing\, photography\, collage\, video\, performance documentation\, and architectural proposals comprising over 50 years of art making. Embracing the differences between these artists as well as their points of convergence\, the exhibition will probe various notions of being\, including the political\, scientific\, and spiritual. \nAll three artists have deep connections to Southern California\, intersecting in the inaugural MFA program at UC-Irvine from 1969 to 1971. Buchanan\, Hafif\, and Smith all entered graduate school as mothers and were emphatically aware of the gendered expectations and hostilities toward women choosing art making as their primary pursuit\, though each presented a unique version of the struggle for liberation from the orthodoxies of gender and sexuality. The exhibition will be anchored by three time-based works demonstrating the overlaps between each artist’s practice and revealing the primary subjects of the exhibition—bodies\, communication\, and dwelling. \nClick here to read more about the exhibition\, on view through June 12\, 2022. \nAdmission: \n\nArtTable Members – $15\nMembers may bring a guest for an additional $20.\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Virtual | Artist Talk with Nneka Jones
DESCRIPTION:10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a virtual Artist Talk with contemporary multidisciplinary artist Nneka Jones.\n\n\nGrowing up in Trinidad and Tobago was one of the main factors that has molded Nneka Jones into the artist she is today. Her astounding love for color and special attention to detail\, as influenced by her culture\, have always been prominent throughout her artistic journey. She enjoys working in mixed media\, embroidery\, textiles\, and paint\, exploring both large-scale mural work and small-scale intimate pieces. Through her practice\, she produces thought-provoking artwork that comments on social and environmental injustice\, strongly advocating for the protection of women and girls of color. These are often topics that as a society\, we feel uncomfortable addressing but are necessary to view head on for a positive change. \nSince graduating from the University of Tampa in May 2020\, Jones’ work has caught the eyes of art directors in top publications like TIME\, where she was commissioned to produce the hand embroidered flag that appears on the August 31st/September 7th 2020 issue. She was also commissioned by the Washington Post to capture the history made by Vice President Kamala Harris and even appeared as a keynote speaker for Adobe MAX; emphasizing the importance of art as a vehicle for activism. \nJones’ unique hand embroidery work has been featured in Colossal magazine\, The Jealous Curator blog\, The American Craft Council\, Embroidery Mag UK\, and Domestika. With work in the permanent collections of the Florida Craft Art Gallery\, Ferman Art Center\, and Tampa Museum of Art\, Jones continues to broaden her professional practice and break barriers at an early stage in her a career as an inspiration to other young\, aspiring artists. \n\n\nWe hope you’ll join us to hear more from this incredible\, trailblazing artist! \n\n\n\nAdmission \n\n\n\nArtTable Circle Members – FreeAll Other ArtTable Members – $10Non-Members – $20\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan’t make the program at this time? Register anyway to receive a recording after! \n\n\n\nPlease note that this program will offer automatic closed captioning services. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\n\n\nArtTable is a 501.c.3 organization. SUMMARY:NoCal | Curator-Led Tour of 'Alice Neel: People Come First' with Lauren Palmor
DESCRIPTION:4pm PST\n\n\n\nJoin ArtTable member Lauren Palmor\, assistant curator of American art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, for a tour of Alice Neel: People Come First at the de Young Museum. Alice Neel (1900–1984) was one of the century’s most radical painters\, a champion of social justice whose longstanding commitment to humanist principles inspired her life as well as her art. This is the first comprehensive West Coast retrospective of Neel’s work. The award-winning exhibition includes paintings\, drawings\, and watercolors\, along with additional artworks and media exclusive to the San Francisco presentation. \n\n\n\nNeel spent most of her life in New York City\, and her work testifies to the diversity\, resilience\, and passion of the people she encountered there. The exhibition includes depictions of Neel’s neighbors in Spanish Harlem\, political leaders\, queer cultural figures\, activists\, and mothers\, along with a diverse representation of nude figures\, including visibly pregnant women. Neel’s “pictures of people” embody a rare candor and irreverence. Together they emphasize her belief in the dignity and worth of all individuals\, a view that remains critical to the social and cultural politics of our time. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\nPlease note that this program is open to ArtTable members only. SUMMARY:Virtual | Panel Discussion - 'Before Silence: Afghan Artists in Exile'
DESCRIPTION:2pm PT / 3pm MT / 4pm CT / 5pm ET\n\n\n\nBefore Silence: Afghan Artists in Exile is an online exhibition presented by Art at a Time Like This\, in partnership with PEN America’s Artists At Risk Connection(ARC). \n\n\n\nSince the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan last August and the subsequent takeover by the Taliban\, which has a long and brutal history of censoring artistic expression\, many Afghan artists\, including writers\, musicians\, filmmakers\, and intellectuals\, have been persecuted and targeted simply for being artists. Fearing for their lives\, many artists have been forced to go into hiding\, self-censor or destroy  their creative work\, or flee the country\, putting the future of the arts and culture in the country into question.  \n\n\n\nBefore Silence presents a powerful selection of works representative of the up and coming generation of Afghan artists who have continued to create and inspire amidst insecurity and humanitarian suffering. Through photographs\, paintings\, cartoons\, murals\, and performances\, this powerful exhibition offers a complex dialogue between artists\, danger\, deprivation\, and insecurity. The artists featured in the exhibition are Ali Rahimi\, ArtLords\, Latifa Zafar Attaii\, Lida Afghan\, Mohsin Taasha\, Morteza Herati\, Naseer Turkmani\, Rada Akbar\, and Shamayel Shalizi. It was a monumental task to pull together this exhibition with the artists scattered throughout the world after fleeing Afghanistan in recent months. This exhibition would not have been possible without unique collaboration between an arts organization and a leading human rights advocacy group. \n\n\n\nTo mark the occasion of this exceptional exhibition\, please join us for a panel discussion with Art at a Time Like This co-founders Anne Verhallen and Barbara Pollack\, conceptual artist Rada Akbar\, and director of PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection\, Julie Trebault. \n\n\n\nAdmission \n\n\n\nArtTable Circle Members – FreeAll Other ArtTable Members – $10Non-Members – $20\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan’t make the program at this time? Register anyway to receive a recording after! \n\n\n\nPlease note that this program will offer automatic closed captioning services. If you require additional accommodations\, please email programs@arttable.org. \n\n\n\nArtTable is a 501.c.3 organization. Her work consists of a mixture of wearable monuments\, performance\, photography and installation pieces. It has been displayed in numerous national and international exhibitions. In 2015\, she received an honorable mention in the UNICEF Photo of the Year Award. In 2020\, her art exhibit called Abarzanan—Superwomen—which celebrates pioneering Afghan women\, was featured in the New York Times\, and in 2021 she received the Prince Claus Seed Award\, MujerHoy awards and BBC 100 Women. \n  \nBarbara Pollack is the co-founder of Art at a Time Like This Inc.\, a platform for free expression for artists at times of crises. SUMMARY:Benefit Week | Tour of 'Faith Ringgold: American People' at the New Museum
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the New Museum after our Annual Benefit & Award Ceremony for a private tour of Faith Ringgold: American People. Our tour will be led by Curatorial Assistant\, Madeline Weisburg. Bringing together over fifty years of work\, the exhibition provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of the artist’s vision. \n\n\n\nArtist\, author\, educator\, and organizer\, Faith Ringgold is one of the most influential cultural figures of her generation. Her career links the multi-disciplinary practices of the Harlem Renaissance to the political art of young Black artists working today. For sixty years\, Ringgold has drawn from both personal autobiography and collective histories to both document her life as an artist and mother and to amplify the struggles for social justice and equity. From creating some of the most indelible artworks of the civil rights era to challenging accepted hierarchies of art versus craft through her experimental story quilts\, Faith Ringgold has produced a body of work that bears witness to the complexity of the American experience. \n\n\n\nThis program is $35 and open to ArtTable members only. She is a Curatorial Assistant at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and Curatorial Researcher for the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University. Her writing has appeared in Art in America\, The Brooklyn Rail\, post at MoMA\, and elsewhere. She holds an MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History: Critical and Curatorial Studies (MODA) from Columbia University as well as a dual BA in Art History and BFA in Studio Art from Tufts University in partnership with the School of the Museum Fine Arts\, Boston. \n\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\n\n\nFaith Ringgold: American People is the most comprehensive exhibition to date of this groundbreaking artist’s vision\, highlighted by the first full presentation of her historic French Collection in over twenty years along with many other quintessential works that will be exhibited together for the first time in decades. Featuring Ringgold’s best-known series\, this show examines the artist’s figurative style as it evolved to meet the urgency of political and social change. The exhibition also foregrounds her radical explorations of gender and racial identities\, which the artist incorporates into the rich textures of her paintings\, soft sculptures\, and story quilts. Among the most important artworks of the past fifty years\, Ringgold’s fabric works combine local traditions and global references to compose a polyphonic history of this country. Long overdue\, this retrospective provides a timely opportunity to experience the art of an American icon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: Faith Ringgold\, American People Series #18: The Flag Is Bleeding\, 1967. SUMMARY:Benefit Week | Tour of the Whitney Biennial
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Whitney Museum of American Art for one of two private tours of the 2022 Whitney Biennial. \n\n\n\nThe 80th edition of the biennial\, entitled Quiet as It’s Kept\, will showcase the work of 63 artists and collectives distributed throughout most of the museum’s space. \n\n\n\n“Quiet as It’s Kept—a colloquialism typically said before the statement of something obviously meant to be kept a secret—was selected as the title after the co-organizers\, curators David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards\, were inspired by the usage of the phrase in a Toni Morrison novel and as the title of a Max Roach album. ‘The 2022 biennial arrives at a time haunted by a global pandemic and plagued by ongoing racial and economic inequities and polarizing politics\,’ says Adam D. Weinberg\, the museum’s Alice Pratt Brown director. ‘The artists in the exhibition challenge us to consider how these realities affect our senses of self and community and offer one of the broadest and most diverse takes on art in the United States that the Whitney has offered in many years.'” \n\n\n\n– Pili Swanson\, Gotham Magazine \n\n\n\nThe Whitney Biennial is the longest-running survey of American art\, and has been a hallmark of the Museum since 1932. Initiated by the Museum’s founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney as an invitational exhibition featuring artwork created in the preceding two years\, the biennials were originally organized by medium\, with painting alternating with sculpture and works on paper. Starting in 1937\, the Museum shifted to yearly exhibitions called Annuals. The current format—a survey show of work in all media occurring every two years—has been in place since 1973. More than 3\,600 artists have participated in a biennial or annual. \n\n\n\nThis is the first of two tours on Saturday\, April 9. The second is at 3:00pm. Please click here if you are looking for the 1:30pm tour. \n\n\n\nThis program is $30 for ArtTable members\, who may bring an additional guests for $45. Capacity is limited. \n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Benefit Week | Tour of the Whitney Biennial
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Whitney Museum of American Art for a private tour of the 2022 Whitney Biennial. \n\n\n\nThis is the second of two tours on Saturday\, April 9. The first is at 1:30pm. Please click here if you are looking for the 1:30pm tour. \n\n\n\nThis program is $30 for ArtTable members\, who may bring an additional guests for $45. Capacity is limited. \n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:NoCal | The New Art Collection: NFTs and Digital Art\, presented in partnership with Art Market San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable and Art Market San Francisco for a discussion on NFTs and digital art collecting! \n\n\n\nAs the art world continues to develop amidst the ever-evolving world of digital art\, NFTs\, and cryptocurrencies\, so too must the established habits of art collectors. The past several years have seen significant developments in the digital realm\, both when it comes to digital art itself as well as purchasing art on digital platforms. NFTs have quickly become a mainstay in art world news\, with new information and initiatives being announced on a regular basis. Artists are more frequently using digital art to address gender and minority imbalances in the art world; art fairs are launching digital viewing sites and permitting non-physical galleries to show at the fair; and NFT platforms are going green. Where years ago purchasing a work of art online might have been unheard of\, now it is a common occurrence. Art\, and how we access it\, is ever-changing\, and we are all just trying to keep up. \n\n\n\nIn this discussion\, we will hear from art advisor Claudia Worthington-Hess\, Christina Steinbrecher\, co-founder of Blockchain.art\, a digital platform for artists and collectors\, and Kelani Nichole\, founder of TRANSFER\, a gallery that explores the friction between virtual studio practice and its physical instantiation. \n\n\n\nClick here to read more about the program and the speakers. \n\n\n\nThis program is free with fair admission and open to all. For more information about the fair and to purchase tickets\, click here. \n\n\n\nThis program is presented in partnership with Art Market San Francisco. Complimentary tickets are available for ArtTable members via the membership portal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: TBD
