Raised up in the mountains of Western North Carolina\, you may have found a young Ambrose in the forest assembling fairy houses out of bark and moss. Through sewing\, painting\, collage and material experimentation\, making home for Spirit and the mystical to reside has become the grounding force in their work. Ambrose was transformed by Black Studies while at Yale College where they received their BA. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable’s Northwest chapter for a special Members-only Studio & Garden tour with renowned artist\, Ginny Ruffner.  \n\n\n\nWe will take a tour of the studio and hear about the plans for the future of Ginny’s space\, which will eventually be converted to the headquarters of the artist’s nonprofit foundation\, SOLA. ArtTable member extraordinaire\, Marge Levy\, and Director of SOLA\, Nichole DeMent\, will discuss Ginny’s artwork\, her career\, and her continued legacy to uplift the local arts community in Seattle. \n\n\n\nThis program is open to ArtTable members only for $35. Please note that attendance is capped at 25 attendees due to space limitations. \n\n\n\nNot a member? The exact address and directions will be shared upon registration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\nGinny Ruffner is a Seattle-based artist\, trained at the University of Georgia as a painter\, graduating with honors and an M.F.A. Ruffner has had 88 solo shows\, several hundred group shows\, and her work is in 55 permanent museum and public collections around the world. Seattle public art installations include a 30-foot tall kinetic water feature downtown and a permanent installation in the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park. Recent Augmented Reality projects include ‘Weston Riff’ at Photo Center NW\, ‘Branches’ at Seattle International Film Festival\, ‘Poetic Hybrids’ at Seattle Art Museum\, and the Institute for Systems Biology\, and the NFFTY festival at Seattle Center. The next exhibition: ‘Reforestation of the Imagination’ was exhibited at the Smithsonian in DC; June 28\, 2019-Jan 5 2020. Accompanied by a book\, it is currently traveling around the US. \nShe has written two books and been the subject of an award winning\, full-length documentary titled “A Not So Still Life\, the Ginny Ruffner Story”. In 2016 Ruffner founded the non-profit SOLA (Support Old Lady Artists) to recognize female artists. SOLA’s mission is to award cash grants\, professional support and greater recognition to female visual artists over 60 who are currently working and living in Washington State and have created a body of work spanning at least 25 years. The SOLA Award honors accomplished yet under-recognized women artists for their dedication and persistence. She brings a collaborative approach to her work in search and in working with her clients. She manages a diverse portfolio of executive searches and has placed leaders at the country’s most recognized organizations in higher education\, foundations and institutes\, and arts and cultural organizations\, including museums\, orchestras\, ballet companies\, and more. \nAnne most recently served as the chief development professional for the San Francisco Symphony\, where she played a senior management role\, working closely with the Board of Governors and leading the Symphony’s contributed revenue division. Previously she served as San José State University’s Associate Vice President of Development and Campaign Director\, leading the university through its first comprehensive campaign\, which exceeded its goal of $200 million by $9 million\, one full year in advance of the publicly-announced deadline. Prior to her work in the Bay Area she held fundraising positions at the University of Kansas and Boston University. \nShe holds a M.A. degree in Education from Boston University and a B.A. in French from the University of Kansas\, which included studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris.  \nSuzanne Julig\, Owner of Suzanne Julig Art Advisory\, is a fine art professional with more than three decades in the field. Over the past several years she has expanded her expertise to include Career Consulting to provide individuals with the tools to pursue and secure employment in the art world. Most recently\, Suzanne was a member of the senior management team at Christie’s Education\, serving as the Career Services Officer. Prior to that\, she was a Director at three New York galleries\, specializing in contemporary as well as American and European art of the 19th and 20th century\, before founding her Art Advisory business in 2008\, through which she provides expertise to collectors in the acquisition of art and management of collections. Suzanne has taught courses at NYU and Sotheby’s Institute of Art\, in addition to organizing exhibitions\, leading museum and gallery tours\, and lecturing to private groups on a variety of art-related topics. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an art tour in Alexandria\, VA led by Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Curator of Exhibitions Leslie Mounaime.  \n\n\n\nWe will meet at Old Town Alexandria Waterfront Park to view and learn more about the “I Love You” public art installation by Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt of R&R STUDIO. From there we will make our way into the Torpedo Factory to see Target Gallery’s solo exhibition “LE DRIP: The Uncontainable Sauce of Black Essence” by artist Blu Murphy. Attendees will enjoy a private talk with the artist to learn more about the exhibition and her process. We will then have the option to continue on a walkthrough of studios and galleries in the Torpedo Factory Art Center with Leslie. \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $10Member Guests – $15\n\n\n\nNot a member? Join today! \n\n\n\nPlease read before registering:\n\n\n\n Health & Safety Face masks are recommended to wear inside the Torpedo Factory Art Center and some studios require it\, so guests should come prepared (though extras will be available in the gallery should that be necessary). Accessibility There are handicapped parking spots directly in front of Waterfront Park\, as well as the Torpedo Factory\, which may be accessed by turning left from Prince St. We will be walking a short 2 minute walk from the park to the Torpedo Factory (about 400 ft) and then the TFAC itself has accessible entrances from the waterfront\, which we will use. Accessible bathrooms are available at the TFAC\, as well as a freight elevator if needed. We recommend people bring mobility aids as necessary. Getting There Driving / Ride-share - There is garage and street parking available\, as well as free 2 hour street parking further down Union St by Founders Park (other side of the TFAC). Metro - You may travel via the blue or yellow line metro and get off at the King St Metro station. There is a free trolley that will come pick people up and drop them off at City Hall which is about 2/3 blocks away from the TFAC. It’s about a 20 minute walk on foot from King St Station. Water Taxi - The water taxi will drop you off at the harbor directly behind the Torpedo Factory\, simply exit to the left and walk toward Waterfront Park with the large “I Love You” installation (about 400-500 ft). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\nLeslie Mounaime (she/her) is an art historian and curator with a master’s in art history with a focus in contemporary art and post-colonialist theory from George Mason University. As a curator she is interested in themes of identity and our relationships with ourselves\, other people\, and the world around us. Leslie has been the Curator of Exhibitions at the Torpedo Factory Art Center since 2016\, where she focuses on supporting emerging and mid-career artists with professional exhibition opportunities. In addition to this\, she manages the Post-Graduate Residency artist program\, an artist residency that supports recently graduated BFA or MFA students with studio space and networking opportunities. Prior to that\, she worked in contemporary art venues such as Artisphere and Art Whino. She also earned a bachelor’s in art history from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been a member of ArtTable DC since 2018. \nBrandy “Blu” Murphy (she/her) is a Washington\, D. Their methods include photography\, sculpture\, installation\, performance and video with a particular emphasis on making spaces for action. Cummings uses drag aesthetics\, substitutions\, hardware store materials\, the unsettling relationship of history and fiction\, landscape\, research\, ambivalence\, theater tricks\, bad illusions\, props\, sets\, and interpretive sites. They have exhibited solo projects at the Oakland Museum of California\, Aggregate Space Gallery\, and more\, and have presented performances with Machine Project\, Southern Exposure\, and the McEvoy Foundation for the Arts\, among others. Cummings received an MFA in sculpture from California College of the Arts and lives and works in Emeryville\, CA. \n\n\n\nShara Mays (she\,her) is a visual artist whose practice is deeply rooted in painting\, using the medium to explore the fluidity of memory and the transcendence of self through the language of abstraction and landscape. Born in Tarboro\, North Carolina\, Shara currently lives in Oakland\, California. She received her BFA degree from The Corcoran College of Art and Design at George Washington University. She received her MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums such as the de Young Museum of San Francisco\, Root Division in San Francisco\, the Diego Rivera Gallery at the San Francisco Art Institute\, and recently at Round Weather Gallery in Oakland\, California. She has\, in the past\, been awarded a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson\, Vermont\, and is a current Affiliate Artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito\, California. Her work is included in both public and private collections. SUMMARY:Virtual | Fine Art Photography in the NFT Space\, with Ashlyn Davis Burns
DESCRIPTION:NFTs have become a hot topic of discussion as a major disruptor of the traditional art market. Typically framed in relation to digital artists (like Beeple\, the artist who broke records at auction with his $69 million NFT in the spring of 2021)\, NFTs have also swiftly been gaining traction among established artists working in traditional media\, particularly in photography. Ashlyn Davis Burns has been representing traditional lens-based artists’ physical work and their collections in the NFT space since 2021. In this talk\, we will hear about the significance of the blockchain for photography\, its growing market position\, and probable directions for the future. Ashlyn will cover landmark projects that have created the current market for NFT photography\, as well as new platforms that have launched in the past year\, including her own. She has supported photographic artists for the past decade through curatorial\, editorial\, and fundraising initiatives. Most recently she served as the Executive Director & Curator of Houston Center for Photography (2015-2020). She has written for numerous publications\, consulted with artists and publishers on photo-books\, and curated exhibitions internationally for libraries\, universities\, and galleries.
