DESCRIPTION:Images courtesy of ICA Boston\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGather at ICA Boston for a guided tour of Leilah Babirye with Ruth Erickson\, Barbara Lee Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs! \n\n\n\nThe evocative\, adorned sculptures of Leilah Babirye (b. 1985 in Kampala\, Uganda) feature the artist’s inventive reuse of debris with her deft carving of wood and work with ceramics. She uses the metal gears and chains of bicycles to create elaborate headdresses and jewelry\, and the rubber inner tubes of bicycle tires to form long tresses that mingle with the burnt-black angles of her carved sculptures and the colorful glazes of her bulbous ceramic forms. For the ICA\, Babirye premieres a new body of ceramic sculptures inspired by the idea of the queer wedding. Each sculpture adopts a role—bride\, groom\, ring bearer\, flower girl\, bridesmaid\, or groomsman—in a vivid installation that is both wedding ceremony and celebration. Witnessing this central event are a number of large-scale works in charred wood\, representing the aunties\, uncles\, and ancestors who have populated the artist’s practice from the beginning. For Babirye\, who fled Uganda after being outed as gay\, the exhibition continues her commitment to uplift LGBTQ identities through her singular\, striking sculptural practice. Attendees will be guided through three exhibitions: Gleefully Askew: A Gladys Nilsson Retrospective\, Suzanne Adan: I’m No Spring Chicken\, and Hot Takes: New Acquisitions in Glass. \n\n\n\nBorn in Chicago in 1940\, Gladys Nilsson is best known for her watercolors of long-limbed figures engaged in everyday micro-dramas. As a member of Chicago’s Hairy Who in the 1960s\, Nilsson made watercolors that earned her a reputation as the most “feminine” member of the group—a characterization that she has challenged and spoofed throughout her career. Nilsson’s self-reflexive approach has guided her experimental practice\, which also includes Plexiglas paintings\, largescale diptychs\, embroidery-hoop paintings\, drawings\, prints\, and mixed-media collages.  \n\n\n\nSuzanne Adan (born 1946) creates personal universes that combine fantasy\, popular culture\, and autobiography. Approximately 100 of these compelling works\, in a variety of media\, are included in Suzanne Adan: I’m No Spring Chicken\, a retrospective assembled in her 80th year. A native Californian\, Adan was born in Woodland and raised in nearby Yolo. She earned her BA and MA from Sacramento State College in 1969 and 1971\, respectively. It was there that she met her husband\, sculptor Michael Stevens\, and became influenced by instructor Jim Nutt\, a member of Chicago’s Hairy Who. \n\n\n\nHot Takes presents approximately twenty works in glass that have recently entered the Crocker’s expanding collection of craft and decorative art. The exhibition features spectacular examples by Art Nouveau artists and designers such as Louis Comfort Tiffany and Émile Gallé. These works are presented alongside expressive pieces by leading contemporary artists—including Dale Chihuly\, Richard Marquis\, Preston Singletary\, Ginny Ruffner\, and Hiroshi Yamano—who introduce new takes and unexpected perspectives on the medium. All illuminate the enduring aesthetic and conceptual possibilities of glass\, underscoring the material’s versatility and luminosity\, as well as the technical innovation and creative vision that continue to define glass as a sculptural art form. \n\n\n\nGuests are invited to join Francesca and Sara at the museum cafe for lunch at 12pm. Her medium\, whether a T-shirt\, plaque\, or electronic sign\, is writing\, and the public dimension is integral to her work. Starting in the 1970s with her New York City street posters and continuing through her recent light projections on landscape and architecture\, her practice has rivaled ignorance and violence with humor\, kindness\, and courage. Holzer received the Leone d’Oro at the Venice Biennale in 1990\, the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award in 1996\, the rank of officier in France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2016\, the US State Department’s International Medal of Arts in 2017\, and Time magazine’s Time 100 Award in 2024. DESCRIPTION:Join ArtTable for a private tour of the Easton Foundation.  \n\n\n\nThe Easton Foundation was established by Louise Bourgeois in the 1980s as a non-profit and charitable organization. Upon her death in 2010\, at the age of 98\, Bourgeois bequeathed her home and an adjacent townhouse to become the Foundation’s offices and donated a substantial collection of her art to its holdings. \n\n\n\nThe Easton Foundation is now dedicated to preserving Bourgeois’s legacy. Serving to promote the scholarship and awareness of Bourgeois’s life and art\, the Foundation aims to cultivate new interpretations of her work while providing a deeper understanding of her artistic process and creative milieu. As part of this mission\, the Foundation has established the Louise Bourgeois Archive\, a study center and residency for curators and scholars\, as well as a sculpture garden and a small exhibition space presenting original archival materials and works from the collection. The Foundation is also undertaking the ongoing conservation of Bourgeois’s distinctive home and studio\, in which she lived and worked for almost 50 years.  \n\n\n\n\n\nProgram Admission: \n\n\n\n\nArtTable Members – $25\n\n\n\n\nNot a member?
