JOB DESCRIPTION:
About The National Academy of Design
Founded in 1825, the National Academy of Design promotes art and architecture in America. As the leading honorary society for visual artists and architects in the United States, we advocate for the arts as a tool for education, celebrate the role of artists and architects in public life, and serve as a catalyst for cultural conversations that propel society forward.
About the Annual Exhibitions
The National Academy of Design’s Annual Exhibition, first held in 1826, is the oldest serial exhibition of American art and architecture in the United States. The Annuals played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s cultural history. For two centuries, these exhibitions have provided a platform for both emerging and established artists to present new work to the public, fostering dialogue, innovation, and public engagement with contemporary artistic practice. Historically, they helped define professional standards and offered one of the few venues where artists could gain visibility based on merit. Today, the Annual continues to serve the public benefit by presenting a cross-section of new art and architecture from across the United States.
The Project
In winter 2027, the National Academy will present the 192nd Annual Exhibition. As part of its longstanding commitment to reimagining the Annual—its format, themes, and participants—the Academy’s Exhibition Committee has decided to commission an independent guest curator to organize this iteration. The intention is to bring greater focus to the exhibition, more effectively highlight the work of selected National Academicians, and enrich the overall experience for the public. This is an exciting opportunity to curate a show drawing from the recent work of a community of the country’s leading artists and architects.
The Position
This opportunity is especially well-suited to a curator whose research interests focus on areas such as: American art and architecture, social justice movements and practice, artist collaborations, and the intersections of art and architecture, among others. A timeline and outline of the responsibilities of the role are provided below, but the Guest Curator will be expected to commit to a project timeline beginning in spring 2026 and continuing through the close of the show in May 2027.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Production Schedule
The Guest Curator will conceive of a thematic exhibition, grounded in our history as a contemporary arts institution founded and led by artists and architects. Working in collaboration with Academy staff, the Guest Curator will select artists and architects through studio visits and/or an open call to all National Academicians. While the Guest Curator will have wide latitude in shaping the exhibition and making selections. The Annual must primarily feature recent work by living National Academicians (list here) and include both artist and architect Academicians.
Working backward from the exhibition opening date (currently scheduled for February 18, 2027), the Guest Curator will draft a full production schedule for the exhibition, which will then be shared with relevant National Academy staff.
Budget
Using an exhibition budget template, the Guest Curator, in conjunction with National Academy staff, will develop an estimated budget for the exhibition to be reviewed and approved by the Executive Director.
Checklist
The Guest Curator will develop an exhibition checklist that includes artworks that adequately present and explore the exhibition’s narrative.
Outside Loans
Working with the Academy’s Project Registrar, the Guest Curator will correspond with lenders to secure works in the exhibition. The Guest Curator will be expected, as needed, to assist in finalizing loans and to accept artworks upon delivery at the Academy.
Writing
The Guest Curator will develop an interpretive essay to accompany the show of up to 4,000 words. This essay will be included in an illustrated exhibition brochure available during the run of the exhibition.
Accompanying Texts & Images
The Guest Curator will write all wall and label text and aggregate high-resolution images of the checklist works, and provide them to our graphic designers by the deadlines specified in the project timeline.
Programming
The Guest Curator will work with the Academy’s Programs Department to conceptualize public programs held during the exhibition. While the Guest Curator is not solely responsible for creating these programs, they may be asked to act as a moderator for programs, based on their availability.
Exhibition Design & Installation
The Guest Curator will work together with Academy staff and Associate Curator to create a layout, timeline, and to-do list for the installation and design of the exhibition. In addition, the Guest Curator must be on-site during installation of the exhibition to ensure that Art Handlers are directed as needed and that all protocols are followed.
Press & Promotion
The Guest Curator will work with the Academy’s public relations team to draft a press release as well as to make themselves available for press interviews that may arise from outreach to journalists and news outlets.
Opening Event
The Guest Curator will be required to attend the opening reception currently scheduled for February 18, 2027. This date may change as priorities and schedules shift.
Deinstallation
The Guest Curator is not expected to be on-site during deinstallation but may be asked to respond to inquiries regarding artwork, loans, or conditions, as needed.
Timeline
This project will commence upon signing of an agreement, which the Academy hopes to finalize by the end of April 2026. Completion of the project will occur around May 2027, after the closing of the exhibition. An exact commencement and conclusion date will be confirmed in an agreement.
