Over the past decade, social and political movements transformed the arts. From the streets of Chile and Iran to museums in Europe and the United States, and from questions of representation and repatriation to demands for equity and justice, protest and activism affected the creation, presentation, and interpretation of visual arts around the world. Bringing together artists, scholars, activists, and museum professionals from varied fields and backgrounds, this book explores the intersections between visual art and social movements during the last tumultuous decade. Spanning themes of protest art, museum ethics, restitution, and institutional transformation, the collection considers how visual arts have both responded to and shaped politics and society. Contributors highlight the role of artists as catalysts for change and delve into how institutions grapple with their colonial pasts. |

Join ArtTable for a Curator-Led Tour at the Bass Museum of Art. Jasa McKenzie will lead tours of Yuko Mohri: Unviolated Imperfection and Amalia Pica: Lecturas Posibles. Unviolated Imperfection is Tokyo-based artist Yuko Mohri’s first solo exhibition in a US museum, on view September 17, 2026 through May 30, 2027. The exhibition spans three galleries, each highlighting three interconnected ideas that embody her exploration of imperfect compositions. Lecturas Posibles takes the form of an almost two-dimensional library—an immersive, interactive installation in which every surface is transformed into a site of inscription and image. Walls, furniture, and familiar objects are rendered in chalkboard paint and traced with white, hand-drawn outlines, creating a flattened, graphic environment that oscillates between object and image, presence and representation. |

Washington, DC | Curator-Led Tour of “Esther Bubley: Photographing the Homefront” with Sarah Leavitt
Esther Bubley (1921-1998), the daughter of Jewish immigrants, was a documentary photographer who worked for the Office of War Information during WWII. While in the capital, she photographed Wilson (now Jackson-Reed) High School students and followed uniformed soldiers throughout the city—to the Loew’s Theater, Glen Echo amusement park, and Dissin’s Jewish boarding house, where her sister lived. Bubley’s evocative black-and-white photographs show us a bustling city welcoming thousands of new residents experiencing urban life. This exhibition pairs dramatic photography with artifacts from the Museum collection that help illustrate this glimpse into the capital city at a critical time in our nation’s history.

This panel will examine what it means for museums to remain relevant and accessible while advancing scholarship, supporting artists, stewarding collections, and serving their communities. Debra Hess Norris is Chair of the Department of Art Conservation, Unidel Henry Francis du Pont Chair of Fine Arts, and Professor of Photograph Conservation at the University of Delaware. An internationally recognized leader in photograph conservation, she has authored more than 45 articles and book chapters and taught more than 165 workshops and seminars for conservators and allied professionals in more than 40 countries. She served for more than 25 years as Director of the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. Norris co-edited Issues in the Conservation of Photographs (Getty Conservation Institute, 2010) and, most recently, The Conservation of Photographic Collections: Significance, Use and Care (Routledge, 2025), an international collaboration involving more than 100 authors. Throughout her career, she has championed the preservation of photographs and cultural heritage as powerful carriers of memory, history, identity, and human connection. |

ArtTable's Curator's Choice program is a dynamic, Pecha Kucha-style presentation featuring three curators, each offering a unique perspective on the artists and works they believe best define the current moment in American art. During the program, each curator will have 10 minutes to present three to five works of their choosing, followed by 10 minutes of audience Q&A. The format is fast-paced, engaging, and encourages a range of viewpoints while fostering thoughtful conversation among arts professionals. |

Join ArtTable for a day trip to New Canaan Connecticut. Our day begins with a Executive Director & Curator-Led Tour of America Abroad: Art, Architecture, and Diplomacy at the Onera Foundation. Presented on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States and FAPE’s 40th year of operations, the exhibition offers rare public access to artworks typically seen only at US embassies—spaces not generally open to the public—and explores how art and architecture have shaped the United States’ diplomatic presence abroad from the Cold War to today. In the afternoon, we will visit The Glass House and Galleries for a two hour tour. The tour tour includes access to 5 structures – the Glass House, Brick House, Painting Gallery, Sculpture Gallery, and Da Monsta. |
